Over the past few years, speech enhancement methods based on deep learning have greatly surpassed traditional methods based on spectral subtraction and spectral estimation. Many of these new techniques operate directly in the the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) domain, resulting in a high computational complexity. In this work, we propose PercepNet, an efficient approach that relies on human perception of speech by focusing on the spectral envelope and on the periodicity of the speech. We demonstrate high-quality, real-time enhancement of fullband (48 kHz) speech with less than 5% of a CPU core.
Speech enhancement methods based on deep learning have surpassed traditional methods. While many of these new approaches are operating on the wideband (16kHz) sample rate, a new fullband (48kHz) speech enhancement system is proposed in this paper. Compared to the existing fullband systems that utilizes perceptually motivated features to train the fullband speech enhancement using a single network structure, the proposed system is a two-step system ensuring good fullband speech enhancement quality while backward compatible to the existing wideband systems.
FullSubNet has shown its promising performance on speech enhancement by utilizing both fullband and subband information. However, the relationship between fullband and subband in FullSubNet is achieved by simply concatenating the output of fullband model and subband units. It only supplements the subband units with a small quantity of global information and has not considered the interaction between fullband and subband. This paper proposes a fullband-subband cross-attention (FSCA) module to interactively fuse the global and local information and applies it to FullSubNet. This new framework is…

This paper introduces a deep neural network model for subband-based speech synthesizer. The model benefits from the short bandwidth of the subband signals to reduce the complexity of the time-domain speech generator. We employed the multi-level wavelet analysis/synthesis to decompose/reconstruct the signal into subbands in time domain. Inspired from the WaveNet, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model predicts subband speech signals fully in time domain. Due to the short bandwidth of the subbands, a simple network architecture is enough to train the simple patterns of the subbands accuratel…

We propose a neural audio generative model, MDCTNet, operating in the perceptually weighted domain of an adaptive modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT). The architecture of the model captures correlations in both time and frequency directions with recurrent layers (RNNs). An audio coding system is obtained by training MDCTNet on a diverse set of fullband monophonic audio signals at 48 kHz sampling, conditioned by a perceptual audio encoder. In a subjective listening test with ten excerpts chosen to be balanced across content types, yet stressful for both codecs, the mean performance of the…
This paper proposes a spectral-domain perceptual weighting technique for Parallel WaveGAN-based text-to-speech (TTS) systems. The recently proposed Parallel WaveGAN vocoder successfully generates waveform sequences using a fast non-autoregressive WaveNet model. By employing multi-resolution short-time Fourier transform (MR-STFT) criteria with a generative adversarial network, the light-weight convolutional networks can be effectively trained without any distillation process. To further improve the vocoding performance, we propose the application of frequency-dependent weighting to the MR-STFT …

Improving subjective sound quality of enhanced signals is one of the most important missions in speech enhancement. For evaluating the subjective quality, several methods related to perceptually-motivated objective sound quality assessment (OSQA) have been proposed such as PESQ (perceptual evaluation of speech quality). However, direct use of such measures for training deep neural network (DNN) is not allowed in most cases because popular OSQAs are non-differentiable with respect to DNN parameters. Therefore, the previous study has proposed to approximate the score of OSQAs by an auxiliary DNN…

To address the monaural speech enhancement problem, numerous research studies have been conducted to enhance speech via operations either in time-domain on the inner-domain learned from the speech mixture or in time--frequency domain on the fixed full-band short time Fourier transform (STFT) spectrograms. Very recently, a few studies on sub-band based speech enhancement have been proposed. By enhancing speech via operations on sub-band spectrograms, those studies demonstrated competitive performances on the benchmark dataset of DNS2020. Despite attractive, this new research direction has not b…

Auditory front-end is an integral part of a spiking neural network (SNN) when performing auditory cognitive tasks. It encodes the temporal dynamic stimulus, such as speech and audio, into an efficient, effective and reconstructable spike pattern to facilitate the subsequent processing. However, most of the auditory front-ends in current studies have not made use of recent findings in psychoacoustics and physiology concerning human listening. In this paper, we propose a neural encoding and decoding scheme that is optimized for speech processing. The neural encoding scheme, that we call Biologic…
The presence of multiple talkers in the surrounding environment poses a difficult challenge for real-time speech communication systems considering the constraints on network size and complexity. In this paper, we present Personalized PercepNet, a real-time speech enhancement model that separates a target speaker from a noisy multi-talker mixture without compromising on complexity of the recently proposed PercepNet. To enable speaker-dependent speech enhancement, we first show how we can train a perceptually motivated speaker embedder network to produce a representative embedding vector for the…

Bayesian estimation of short-time spectral amplitude is one of the most predominant approaches for the enhancement of the noise corrupted speech. The performance of these estimators are usually significantly improved when any perceptually relevant cost function is considered. On the other hand, the recent progress in the phase-based speech signal processing have shown that the phase-only enhancement based on spectral phase estimation methods can also provide joint improvement in the perceived speech quality and intelligibility, even in low SNR conditions. In this paper, to take advantage of bo…

Recently, deep neural network (DNN)-based speech enhancement (SE) systems have been used with great success. During training, such systems require clean speech data - ideally, in large quantity with a variety of acoustic conditions, many different speaker characteristics and for a given sampling rate (e.g., 48kHz for fullband SE). However, obtaining such clean speech data is not straightforward - especially, if only considering publicly available datasets. At the same time, a lot of material for automatic speech recognition (ASR) with the desired acoustic/speaker/sampling rate characteristics …
Recent approaches in text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis employ neural network strategies to vocode perceptually-informed spectrogram representations directly into listenable waveforms. Such vocoding procedures create a computational bottleneck in modern TTS pipelines. We propose an alternative approach which utilizes generative adversarial networks (GANs) to learn mappings from perceptually-informed spectrograms to simple magnitude spectrograms which can be heuristically vocoded. Through a user study, we show that our approach significantly outperforms naïve vocoding strategies while being hundred…
Conventional feature-based classification methods do not apply well to automatic recognition of speech emotions, mostly because the precise set of spectral and prosodic features that is required to identify the emotional state of a speaker has not been determined yet. This paper presents a method that operates directly on the speech signal, thus avoiding the problematic step of feature extraction. Furthermore, this method combines the strengths of the classical source-filter model of human speech production with those of the recently introduced liquid state machine (LSM), a biologically-inspir…

Quality and intelligibility of speech signals are degraded under additive background noise which is a critical problem for hearing aid and cochlear implant users. Motivated to address this problem, we propose a novel speech enhancement approach using a deep spectrum image translation network. To this end, we suggest a new architecture, called VGG19-UNet, where a deep fully convolutional network known as VGG19 is embedded at the encoder part of an image-to-image translation network, i.e. U-Net. Moreover, we propose a perceptually-modified version of the spectrum image that is represented in Mel…
Perceptually-inspired objective functions such as the perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ), signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR), and short-time objective intelligibility (STOI), have recently been used to optimize performance of deep-learning-based speech enhancement algorithms. These objective functions, however, do not always strongly correlate with a listener's assessment of perceptual quality, so optimizing with these measures often results in poorer performance in real-world scenarios. In this work, we propose an attention-based enhancement approach that uses learned speech embeddi…
In recent years generative adversarial network (GAN) based models have been successfully applied for unsupervised speech-to-speech conversion. The rich compact harmonic view of the magnitude spectrogram is considered a suitable choice for training these models with audio data. To reconstruct the speech signal first a magnitude spectrogram is generated by the neural network, which is then utilized by methods like the Griffin-Lim algorithm to reconstruct a phase spectrogram. This procedure bears the problem that the generated magnitude spectrogram may not be consistent, which is required for find…

Due to the high computational complexity to model more frequency bands, it is still intractable to conduct real-time full-band speech enhancement based on deep neural networks. Recent studies typically utilize the compressed perceptually motivated features with relatively low frequency resolution to filter the full-band spectrum by one-stage networks, leading to limited speech quality improvements. In this paper, we propose a coordinated sub-band fusion network for full-band speech enhancement, which aims to recover the low- (0-8 kHz), middle- (8-16 kHz), and high-band (16-24 kHz) in a step-wi…

The goal in speech enhancement is to obtain an estimate of clean speech starting from the noisy signal by minimizing a chosen distortion measure, which results in an estimate that depends on the unknown clean signal or its statistics. Since access to such prior knowledge is limited or not possible in practice, one has to estimate the clean signal statistics. In this paper, we develop a new risk minimization framework for speech enhancement, in which, one optimizes an unbiased estimate of the distortion/risk instead of the actual risk. The estimated risk is expressed solely as a function of the…
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems are known to exhibit difficulties when transcribing children's speech. This can mainly be attributed to the absence of large children's speech corpora to train robust ASR models and the resulting domain mismatch when decoding children's speech with systems trained on adult data. In this paper, we propose multiple enhancements to alleviate these issues. First, we propose a data augmentation technique based on the source-filter model of speech to close the domain gap between adult and children's speech. This enables us to leverage the data availability …
Many deep learning-based speech enhancement algorithms are designed to minimize the mean-square error (MSE) in some transform domain between a predicted and a target speech signal. However, optimizing for MSE does not necessarily guarantee high speech quality or intelligibility, which is the ultimate goal of many speech enhancement algorithms. Additionally, only little is known about the impact of the loss function on the emerging class of time-domain deep learning-based speech enhancement systems. We study how popular loss functions influence the performance of deep learning-based speech enha…
