A long-standing theoretical prediction is that in clean, nodal unconventional superconductors the magnetic penetration depth $λ$, at zero temperature, varies linearly with magnetic field. This non-linear Meissner effect is an equally important manifestation of the nodal state as the well studied linear-in-$T$ dependence of $λ$, but has never been convincingly experimentally observed. Here we present measurements of the nodal superconductors CeCoIn$_5$ and LaFePO which clearly show this non-linear Meissner effect. We further show how the effect of a small dc magnetic field on $λ(T)$ can be used to distinguish gap nodes from non-nodal deep gap minima. Our measurements of KFe$_2$As$_2$ suggest that this material has such a non-nodal state.
We present measurements the field and temperature dependence of the penetration depth (lambda) in high purity, untwinned single crystals of YBa2Cu3O6.95 in all three crystallographic directions. The temperature dependence of lambda is linear down to low temperatures, showing that our crystals are extremely clean. Both the magnitude and temperature dependence of the field dependent correction to lambda however, are considerably different from that predicted from the theory of the non-linear Meissner effect for a d-wave superconductor (Yip-Sauls theory). Our results suggest that the Yip-Sauls ef…
We report clear observations of the magnetic Meissner effect in arrays of superconducting 4 Å carbon nanotubes grown in the linear channels of AlPO4-5 (AFI) zeolite single crystals. Both bulk magnetization and magnetic torque experiments show a clear signature of the lower critical Hc1 transition, a pronounced difference in zero-field cooled and field cooled branches during temperature sweeps below 6K, and signatures of 1D superconducting fluctuations below ~15-18 K. These experiments extend the magnetic phase diagram we obtained previously by resistive experiments [Z. Wang et al., Phys. Rev. …
A empirical model is proposed for the observed variation of the London penetration depth of cuprate superconductors with applied magnetic field $H$ below the lower critical field H_c1. It is suggested that the Doppler shift of the quasi-particle energies near the d-wave nodes could cause pair-breaking and that this could be responsible for the non-linear Meissner effect (NLME) investigated in recent experiments. This picture gives a somewhat better description of the observed temperature and field dependencies than the original theory proposed by Yip and Sauls. A calculation based on weak-coup…
In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, p.5640 (1998), cond-mat/9808249 v3), it was suggested that nonlocal effects may prevent observation of the nonlinear Meissner effect in YBCO. We argue that this claim is incorrect with regards to measurements of the nonlinear transverse magnetic moment, and that the most likely reason for a null result lies elsewhere.
Using the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, we study the magnetic response of different shaped samples in the field-cooled regime (FC). For high external magnetic fluxes, the conventional diamagnetic response under cooling down can be followed by the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME). A second-order transition from a giant vortex state to a multi-vortex state, with the same vorticity, occurs at the second critical field which leads to the suppression of PME.
The structure of the Meissner effect in a current-carrying cylindrical wire with arbitrary disorder is studied using a numerical procedure that is exact within the semiclassical approximation. A distribution of currents is found that is non-monotonous as a function of the radial coordinate. For high currents, a robust gapless superconducting state develops at the surface of both clean and dirty leads. Our calculation provides a quantitative theory of the critical current in realistic wires.
We examine the effects of nonlocal electrodynamics for a d-wave superconductor on the field dependence of the magnetic penetration depth. The linear field dependence predicted in the local limit, commonly known as the nonlinear Meissner effect, is instead found to be quadratic, $δλ\sim H^2$ for fields below a crossover scale $H^*$. This crossover is shown to be geometry dependent and for most orientations of the screening currents is of the same order as or greater than $H_{c1}$, implying that the nonlinear Meissner effect can not be observed. For special orientations where the current flows a…
Recently, an extremely high superconducting temperature (Tc) of ~200 K has been reported in the sulfur hydride system above 100 GPa. This result is supported by theoretical predictions and verified experimentally. The crystal structure of the superconducting phase was also identified experimentally, confirming the theoretically predicted structure as well as a decomposition mechanism from H2S to H3S+S. Even though nuclear resonant scattering has been successfully used to provide magnetic evidence for a superconducting state, a direct measurement of the important Meissner effect is still lackin…
Dirac electrons in solids show characteristic physical properties due to their linear dispersion relation and two-band nature. Although the transport phenomena of Dirac electrons in a normal state have intensively been studied, the transport phenomena in a superconducting state have not been fully understood. In particular, it is not clear whether Dirac electrons in a superconducting state show Meissner effect (ME), since a diamagnetic term of a current operator is absent as a result of the linear dispersion. We investigate the ME of three dimensional massive Dirac electrons in a superconducti…
The parity breaking gives rise to rich superconducting properties through the admixture of even and odd-parity Cooper pairs. A new light has been shed on parity-breaking superconductors by recent observations of nonreciprocal responses such as the nonlinear optical responses and the superconducting diode effect. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the nonreciprocal responses are characterized by a unidirectional correction to the superfluid density, which we call nonreciprocal superfluid density. This correction leads to the nonreciprocal Meissner effect, namely, asymmetric screening of magnet…
Inspired by the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in potassium-doped $p$-terphenyl, we examine the possibility of superconductivity in $p$-quaterphenyl with one more phenyl ring than $p$-terphenyl. The Meissner effect with critical temperatures ranging from 3.5 K to 120 K is found by the magnetic susceptibility measurements in $p$-quaterphenyl upon doping potassium in the condition of annealing or just pestling. The primary superconducting phase with critical temperature of 7.2 K can be reduplicated in several superconducting samples. In both the annealed and pestled superconduct…
We investigate the free energy and the penetration depth of a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave superconductor in the presence of a weak magnetic field by taking account of thermal, nonlocal and nonlinear effects. In an approximation in which the superfluid velocity $v_s$ is assumed to be slowly varying, the free energy is calculated and compared with available results in several limiting cases. It is shown that either nonlocal or nonlinear effects may cut off the linear-$T$ dependence of both the free energy and the penetration depth in all the experimental geometries. At extremely low $T$, the no…
There are claims of synthesis of a room temperature superconductor. However, these claims have not been officially accepted by scientific communities. Currently, the highest transition temperature (Tc) recognized in scientific articles is 135 K at 1 atm of Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O system which is a copper oxide superconductor. We packed graphite flakes into a ring-shaped polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tube and further injected heptane or octane. Then we generated circulating current in this ring tube by electromagnetic induction and showed that this circulating current continues to flow continuously at r…
The chain-like organic compounds with conjugated structure have the potential to become high temperature superconductors. We examine this idea by choosing p-quinquephenyl with five phenyl rings connected in para position. The dc magnetic susceptibility measurements provide solid evidence for the presence of Meissner effect when the compound is doped by potassium. The real part of the ac susceptibility shows exactly same transition temperature as that in dc magnetization, and the imaginary part of nearly zero value after transition implies the realization of zero-resistivity. All these features…
Implanting fully polarized low energy muons on the nanometer scale beneath the surface of a superconductor in the Meissner state enabled us to probe the evanescent magnetic field profile B(z)(0<z<=200nm measured from the surface). All the investigated samples [Nb: kappa \simeq 0.7(2), Pb: kappa \simeq 0.6(1), Ta: kappa \simeq 0.5(2)] show clear deviations from the simple exponential B(z) expected in the London limit, thus revealing the non-local response of these superconductors. From a quantitative analysis within the Pippard and BCS models the London penetration depth lambda_L is extracted. …
We investigated the nonlinear Meissner effect (NLME) in Nb$_3$Sn thin film coplanar resonators by measuring the resonance frequency as a function of a parallel magnetic field at different temperatures. We used low rf power probing in films thinner than the London penetration depth $λ(B)$ to significantly increase the field onset of vortex penetration and measure the NLME under equilibrium conditions. Contrary to the conventional quadratic increase of $λ(B)$ with $B$ expected in s-wave superconductors, we observed a nearly linear increase of the penetration depth with $B$. We concluded that thi…
The Meissner effect has been studied in Ba(Fe0.926Co0.074)2As2 and Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 single crystals and compared to well known, type-II superconductors LuNi2B2C and V3Si. Whereas flux penetration is mostly determined by the bulk pinning (and, perhaps, surface barrier) resulting in a large negative magnetization, the flux expulsion upon cooling in a magnetic field is very small, which could also be due to pinning and/or surface barrier effects. However, in stark contrast with the expected behavior, the amount of the expelled flux increases almost linearly with the applied magnetic field, at leas…
Experiment and analytical calculations show that the demagnetizing field of a superconductor is a sensitive probe of quantities otherwise difficult to measure, such as the sample-probe distance in flux-density imaging experiments, and the field of first flux penetration Hp. In particular, the ratio of the maximum field measured above the superconductor edge and the applied field can be determined unambiguously so as to define a linear "geometric" susceptibility. The evolution of this susceptibility with field depends on the regime of flux penetration, and can be used as a means to determine Hp…
We find that a recently proposed interaction involving the vorticity current of electrons, which radiatively induces a photon mass in 3+1 dimensions in the low-energy effective theory, corresponds to confining strings (linear potential) between electrons.
In this paper we have studied the onset of holographic $s$-wave condensate in the $(4+1)$ dimensional planar Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black hole background with several non-linear corrections to the gauge field. In the probe limit, performing explicit analytic computations, with and without magnetic field, we found that these higher order corrections indeed affect various quantities characterising the holographic superconductors. Also, performing a comparative study of the two non-linear electrodynamics it has been shown that the exponential electrodynamics has stronger effects on the formation of the…
As shown in former papers, the nonadiabatic Heisenberg model presents a novel mechanism of Cooper pair formation which is not the result of an attractive electron-electron interaction but can be described in terms of quantum mechanical constraining forces. This mechanism operates in narrow, roughly half-filled superconducting bands of special symmetry and is evidently responsible for the formation of Cooper pairs in all superconductors. Here we consider this new mechanism within an outer magnetic field. We show that in the magnetic field the constraining forces produce Cooper pairs of non-vani…
We report observation of the nonlinear Meissner effect (NLME) in Nb films by measuring the resonance frequency of a planar superconducting cavity as a function of the magnitude and the orientation of a parallel magnetic field. Use of low power rf probing in films thinner than the London penetration depth, significantly increases the field for the vortex penetration onset and enables NLME detection under true equilibrium conditions. The data agree very well with calculations based on the Usadel equations. We propose to use NLME angular spectroscopy to probe unconventional pairing symmetries in …
We calculate the change in susceptibility resulting from a thin sheet with reduced penetration depth embedded perpendicular to the surface of an isotropic superconductor, in a geometry applicable to scanning Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) microscopy, by numerically solving Maxwell's and London's equations using the finite element method. The predicted stripes in susceptibility agree well in shape with the observations of Kalisky et al. of enhanced susceptibility above twin planes in the underdoped pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (Ba-122). By comparing the predicte…
We have explored the vortex phase diagram in a spherical single crystal of niobium (T ~ 9.3 K) via isothermal and temperature dependent dc magnetization and ac-susceptibility measurements. The crystal has extremely weak pinning that can be inferred from the reversibility of loops below T_c. However, one can visualize the peak effect (PE) feature in the isothermal M-H loops up to T = 8 K. The PE is also prominent in isothermal ac-susceptibility data for H > 750 Oe. An interesting observation in the present study is the prominent fingerprints of surface superconductivity, starting just above the…
We investigate the vortex phase diagram in untwinned YBaCuO single crystals with columnar defects. These randomly distributed defects, produced by heavy ion irradiation, are expected to induce a ``Bose Glass'' phase of localized vortices characterized by a vanishing resistance and a Meissner effect for magnetic fields transverse to the defect axis. We directly observe the transverse Meissner effect using an array of Hall probe magnetometers. As predicted, the Meissner state breaks down at temperatures Ts that decrease linearly with increasing transverse magnetic field. However, Ts falls well b…
From the outset of superconductivity research it was assumed that no electrostatic fields could exist inside superconductors, and this assumption was incorporated into conventional London electrodynamics. Yet the London brothers themselves initially (in 1935) had proposed an electrodynamic theory of superconductors that allowed for static electric fields in their interior, which they unfortunately discarded a year later. I argue that the Meissner effect in superconductors necessitates the existence of an electrostatic field in their interior, originating in the expulsion of negative charge fro…
Momentum and energy conservation are fundamental tenets of physics, that valid physical theories have to satisfy. In the reversible transformation between superconducting and normal phases in the presence of a magnetic field, the mechanical momentum of the supercurrent has to be transferred to the body as a whole and vice versa, the kinetic energy of the supercurrent stays in the electronic degrees of freedom, and no energy is dissipated nor entropy is generated in the process. We argue on general grounds that to explain these processes it is necessary that the electromagnetic field mediates t…
Within the t-t'-J model, the doping dependence of the Meissner effect in cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. Following the linear response theory, it is shown that the electromagnetic response consists of two parts, the diamagnetic current and the paramagnetic current, which exactly cancels the diamagnetic term in the normal state, and then the Meissner effect is obtained for all the temperature $T\leq T_{c}$ throughout the superconducting dome. By considering the two-dimensional geometry of cuprate superconductors within the specula…
The transverse Meissner effect (TME) in the highly layered superconductor $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+y}$ with columnar defects is investigated by transport measurements. We present detailed evidence for the persistence of the Bose glass phase for $H_{\perp}<H_{\perp c}$ : (i) the variable-range vortex hopping process for low currents crosses over to the half-loops regime for high currents; (ii) in both regimes near $H_{\perp c}$ the energy barriers vanish linearly with $H_{\perp}$ ; (iii) the transition temperature is governed by $T_{BG}(H_{\parallel},0) -T_{BG}(H_{\parallel},H_{\perp}) \sim |H_{\per…
We have used the technique of low energy muon spin rotation to measure the local magnetic field profile B(z) beneath the surface of a lead film maintained in the Meissner state (z depth from the surface, z <= 200 nm). The data unambiguously show that B(z) clearly deviates from an exponential law and represent the first direct, model independent proof for a non-local response in a superconductor.
It is well known that a covariant Lagrangian for relativistic charged particles can lead to a vanishing Hamiltonian. Alternatively, it is shown that using a "space+time" Lagrangian leads to a new canonical momentum and minimal coupling rule that describes the coupling of both electromagnetic and gravitational fields to a relativistic charged particle. Discrepancies between Hamiltonians obtained by various authors are resolved. The canonical momentum leads to a new form of the London equations and London gauge. Using the linearized Einstein field equation in harmonic coordinates, and a non-rela…
We derive a general microscopic expression for the non-linear diamagnetic current in a clean superconductor-insulator-normal metal structure with an arbitrary interface transmission. In the absence of electron-electron interactions in the normal metal the diamagnetic response increases monotonously with decreasing temperature showing no sign of paramagnetic reentrance down to T=0. We also analyze the magnetic breakdown of proximity induced Meissner screening. We demonstrate that the magnetic breakdown field should be strongly suppressed in the limit of small interface transmissions while the l…
A spontaneous vortex state (SVS) between 30 K and 56 K was observed for the weak-ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8 with ferromagnetic Curie temperature TC = 131 K and superconducting transition temperature Tc = 56 K. The low field (20 G) Superconducting hysteresis loop indicates a narrow Meissner state region within average lower critical field Bc1(T)= Bc1(0)[1 - (T/T0)2], with average Bave c1 (0) = 12 G and T0 = 30 K. Full Meissner shielding signal in very low applied field indicates an ab-plane Bab c1(0) ~ 4 G with an estimated anisotropic parameter g ~ 7 for this layered system. The…
The cryptoferromagnetic state (the state with intrinsic domain structure) in superconducting ferromagnets subjected to external magnetic field is studied theoretically. Ferromagnetism originates either from electron spin or the intrinsic angular momentum of Cooper pairs (chiral p-wave superconductors like $\mathrm{Sr_2 Ru O_4}$). The phase transitions towards the Meissner and the mixed states are investigated, and the magnetic phase diagrams are obtained. Cryptoferromagnetism, as a form coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism, can be detected by observation of magnetization curves …
We show that the behaviour of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconductors near a surface is considerably different from the usual case. The order parameter of the FF state is strongly deformed near the surface, which leads to a number of unusual features in the linear magnetic response, such as "anti-screening" or "over-screening" of the applied field. In a fully isotropic FF case, the Meissner effect is still present, despite the vanishing of the transverse superfluid density in the bulk. We also calculate the surface critical field Hc3, which exhibits a peculiar temperature d…
We report the first direct observation of the oxygen-isotope ($^{16}$O/$^{18}$O) effect on the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ in a nearly optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ film using the novel low-energy muon-spin rotation technique. Spin polarized low energy muons are implanted in the film at a known depth $z$ beneath the surface and precess in the local magnetic field $B(z)$. This feature allows us to measure directly the profile $B(z)$ of the magnetic field inside the superconducting film in the Meissner state and to make a model independent determination of $λ_{ab}$. A substantia…
We study the superheating field of a bulk superconductor within Ginzburg-Landau theory, which is valid near the critical temperature. We calculate, as functions of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$, the superheating field $\Hsh$ and the critical momentum $k_c$ characterizing the wavelength of the instability of the Meissner state to flux penetration. By mapping the two-dimensional linear stability theory into a one-dimensional eigenfunction problem for an ordinary differential equation, we solve the problem numerically. We demonstrate agreement between the numerics and analytics, and show conv…
We report on the observation of bulk superconductivity from dc magnetization measurements in a cylindrical single crystal of CuxBi2Se3. The magnitude of the magnetization in the Meissner state is very small and the magnetic-field dependence of the magnetization just above the lower critical field Hc1 is very different from those of usual type-II superconductors. We studied the character of the vortex state theoretically in a spin-triplet pairing superconductor and compared it with the experimental results. The results showed that, the superconductivity observed in CuxBi2Se3 is consistent with …
Despite several efforts the nonlinear Meissner effect in d-wave superconductors, as has been discussed by Yip and Sauls in 1992, has not been verified experimentally in high-Tc superconductors at present. Here, we reinvestigate the nonlinear response expected in a d-wave superconductor. While the linear H field dependence of the penetration depth, predicted by Yip and Sauls, is restricted by the lower critical field and can be masked by nonlocal effects, we argue that the upturn of the nonlinear coefficient of the quadratic field dependence is more stable and remains observable over a broader …
Motivated by recent experiments on the organic superconductor $λ-(BETS)_2FeCl_4$ we study the Jaccarino-Peter effect (JPE), the earliest example of magnetic-field-induced superconductivity, from the point of view of current-density-functional theory. It is found that both Meissner (diamagnetic) and Pauli (paramagnetic) pair breaking are suppressed by an exchange-correlation contribution to the vector potential, arising at the sites of the magnetic ions. This explains a number of otherwise puzzling experimental observations, and sheds new light on earlier theories of the JPE.
We perform calculations to obtain the $H_{c2}$ curve of high temperature superconductors (HTSC). We consider explicitly the fact that the HTSC possess intrinsic inhomogeneities by taking into account a non uniform charge density $ρ(r)$. The transition to a coherent superconducting phase at a critical temperature $T_c$ corresponds to a percolation threshold among different superconducting regions, each one characterized by a given $T_c(ρ(r))$. Within this model we calculate the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ by means of an average linearized Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation to take into account the…
We analytically sutdy the effect of external magnetic field in a Holographic superconductor by using Sturm-Liouville method. We estimate the coefficient of proportionality at critical temperature and find its denpendence on external magnetic field. By exploring phase diagrams of critical temperature and magnetic field for various condensates, we conclude that a Meissner-like effect is a general feature in Holographic superconductors. We also study the quantum phase transition at zero temperature and find that critical charge density increases linearly with the condensate dimension.
The hallmark of superconductivity is the rigidity of the quantum-mechanical phase of electrons, responsible for superfluid behavior and Meissner effect. The strength of the phase stiffness is set by the Josephson coupling, which is strongly anisotropic in layered superconducting cuprates. So far, THz light pulses have been efficiently used to achieve non-linear control of the out-of-plane Josephson plasma mode, whose frequency scale lies in the THz range. However, the high-energy in-plane plasma mode has been assumed to be insensitive to THz pumping. Here, we show that THz driving of both low-…
We investigate superconducting phase transition in superconductor(S)/ferromagnet(F) bilayer with Rasba spin-orbit interaction at S/F interface. This spin-orbit coupling produces spontaneous supercurrents flowing inside the atomic-thickness region near the interface, which are compensated by the screening Meissner currents [S. Mironov and A. Buzdin, Phys. Rev. Lett \textbf{118}, 077001 (2017)]. In the case of thin superconducting film the emergence of the spontaneous surface currents causes the increase of the superconducting critical temperature and we calculate the actual value of the critica…
We measured the initial M-H curves for a sample of the newly discovered superconductor NdFeAsO0.82Fe0.18, which had a critical temperature, Tc, of 51 K, and was fabricated at the high pressure of 6 GPa. The lower critical field, Hc1, was extracted from the deviation point of the Meissner linearity in the M-H curves, which show linear temperature dependence in the low temperature region down to 5 K. The Hc1(T) indicates no s-wave superconductivity, but rather an unconventional superconductivity with a nodal gap structure. Furthermore, the linearity of Hc1 at low temperature does not hold at hig…
We present the theoretical approach to study the unconventional Josephson junction (uJJ) made by putting the non-superconduncting strip on the top of superconducting strip. We work in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau, Bogoliubov de Gennes and Usadel formalisms. We solve the non-linear parital differential equations numerically for few simple cases. We obtaine the eigenenergies of the uJJ by means of combined GL and BdGe method. cases. We predict the occurence of the physical effect, which we call the topological Meissner effect. Basing on the obtained results and current knowledge on Josep…
The breakdown magnetic field is the key parameter which determines the performance of superconducting radio-frequency cavities. This is the maximum field up to which the Meissner state remains stable and in uniform material, it is approximately given by the thermodynamic field. There are several recent suggestions to use nonuniform structures to enhance the breakdown field. One of possible realizations of such structure is depth profile of the scattering rate which, in the first approximation, modifies the London penetration depth but does not change the thermodynamic field. In this paper, we …
We investigate effects of strong electron correlation on magnetoelectric transport phenomena in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with particular emphasis on its application to the recently discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si. Taking into account electron correlation effects in a formally exact way, we obtain the expression of the magnetoelectric coefficient for the Zeeman-field-induced paramagnetic supercurrent, of which the existence was predicted more than a decade ago. It is found that in contrast to the usual Meissner current, which is much reduced by the mass renormalizat…
Andreev bound states (ABS) at the surface of superconductors are expected for any pair potential showing a sign change in different k-directions with their spectral weight depending on the relative orientation of the surface and the pair potential. We report on the observation of ABS in HTS employing tunneling spectroscopy on bicrystal grain boundary Josephson junctions (GBJs). The tunneling spectra were studied as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. The tunneling spectra of GBJ formed by YBCO, BSCCO, and LSCO show a pronounced zero bias conductance peak that can be interpret…
Key questions for any superconductor include: what is its maximum dissipation-free electrical current (its `critical current') and can this be used to extract fundamental thermodynamic parameters? Present models focus on depinning of magnetic vortices and implicate materials engineering to maximise pinning performance. But recently we showed that the self-field critical current for thin films is a universal property, independent of microstructure, controlled only by the penetration depth. Here we generalise this observation to include thin films, wires or nanowires of single- or multi-band s-w…
We investigate vortex structure and melting transition in very anisotropic layered superconductors at fields tilted with respect to the c-axis. We show that even a small in-plane field does not homogeneously tilt the vortex lattice but, instead, penetrates inside the superconductor in the form of Josephson vortices (JVs) similar to the Meissner state. At high c-axis magnetic field the phase field of the JV is built up from the phase perturbations created by displacements of pancake vortices. The crossing-lattices ground state leads to linear dependencies of the melting field and melting temper…
