The quantum anomalies at the edges correspond to the topological phases in the system, and the chiral edge states can reflect bulk bands' topological properties. In this paper, we demonstrate a simulation of Floquet system's chiral edge states in position shaken finite-size honeycomb optical lattice. Through the periodical shaking, we break the time reversal symmetry of the system, and get the topological non-trivial states with non-zero Chen number. At the topological non-trivial area, we find chiral edge states on different sides of the lattice, and the locations of chiral edge states change with the topological phase. Further, gapless boundary excitations are found to appear at the topological phase transition points. It provides a new scheme to simulate chiral edge states in the Floquet system, and promotes the study of gapless boundary excitations.
We investigate the correspondence between the tight-binding Floquet Hamiltonian of a periodically modulated honeycomb lattice and the Haldane model. We show that - though the two systems share the same topological phase diagram, as reported in a breakthrough experiment with ultracold atoms in a stretched honeycomb lattice [Jotzu et al., Nature 515, 237 (2014)] - the corresponding Hamiltonians are not equivalent, the one of the shaken lattice presenting a much richer structure.
Inspired by the recent creation of the honeycomb optical lattice and the realization of the Mott insulating state in a square lattice by shaking, we study here the shaken honeycomb optical lattice. For a periodic shaking of the lattice, a Floquet theory may be applied to derive a time-independent Hamiltonian. In this effective description, the hopping parameters are renormalized by a Bessel function, which depends on the shaking direction, amplitude and frequency. Consequently, the hopping parameters can vanish and even change sign, in an anisotropic manner, thus yielding different band struct…
We propose a scheme to realize bosonic fractional quantum Hall conductance in shaken honeycomb optical lattices. This scheme does not require a very flat band, and the necessary long-range interaction relies on s-wave scattering, which is common in many ultracold-atom experiments. By filling the lattice at 1/4 with identical bosons under Feshbach resonance, two degenerate many-body ground states share one Chern number of 1 and correspond exactly to the fractional quantum Hall conductance of 1/2. Meanwhile, we prove that the fractional quantum Hall state can be prepared by adiabatically turning…
We revisit the SU(6) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice, which has been predicted to be a chiral spin liquid by mean-field theory [G. Szirmai et al., Phys. Rev. A 84, 011611 (2011)]. Using exact diagonalizations of finite clusters, infinite projected entangled pair states simulations, and variational Monte Carlo simulations based on Gutzwiller projected wave functions, we provide strong evidence in favour of the competing plaquette state, which was reported to be higher but close by in energy according to mean-field theory. This is further confirmed by the investigation of the model wit…
We show that, when $N$ is a multiple of 6 ($N=6m$, $m$ integer), the \SU{N} Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with $m$ particles per site has a clear tendency toward chiral order as soon as $m\geq 2$. This conclusion has been reached by a systematic variational Monte Carlo investigation of Gutzwiller projected wave-functions as a function of $m$ between the case of one particle per site ($m=1$), for which the ground state has recently been shown to be in a plaquette singlet state, and the $m\rightarrow \infty$ limit, where a mean-field approach has established that the ground state has…
Recent experiments in ultracold atoms and photonic analogs have reported the implementation of artificial gauge fields in lattice systems, facilitating the realization of topological phases. Motivated by such advances, we investigate the Haldane honeycomb lattice tight-binding model, for bosons with local interactions at the average filling of one boson per site. We analyze the ground state phase diagram and uncover three distinct phases: a uniform superfluid (SF), a chiral superfluid (CSF) and a plaquette Mott insulator with local current loops (PMI). Nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbo…
In this paper, we study phase diagrams of dipolar hard-core boson gases on the honeycomb lattice. The system is described by the Haldane-Bose-Hubbard model with complex hopping amplitudes and the nearest neighbor repulsion. By using the slave-particle representation of the hard-core bosons and also the path-integral quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, we investigate the system and to show that the systems have a rich phase diagram. There are Mott, superfluid, chiral superfluid, and sublattice chiral superfluid phases as well as the density-wave phase. We also found that there exists a coexisting …
We study the quantum anomalous Hall states in the $p$-orbital bands of the honeycomb optical lattices loaded with the single component fermions. Such an effect has not been realized in both condensed matter and cold atom systems yet. By applying the available experimental technique developed by Gemelke \textit{et al.} to rotate each lattice site around its own center, the band structures become topologically non-trivial. At a certain rotation angular velocity $Ω$, a flat band structure appears with localized eigenstates carrying chiral current moments. With imposing the soft confining potentia…
We study the circular shaking of a two dimensional optical lattice, which is essentially a (2+1) dimensional space-time lattice exhibiting periodicities in both spatial and temporal dimensions. The near-resonant optical shaking considered here dynamically couples the low-lying $s$ band and the first excited $p$ bands by transferring a photon of shaking frequency. The intertwined space-time symmetries are further uncovered to elucidate the degeneracy in the spectrum solved with the generalized Bloch-Floquet theorem. Setting the chirality of circular shaking explicitly breaks time reversal symme…
In this work, we describe a method to realize 3D Weyl semimetal by coupling multilayers of honeycomb optical lattice in the presence of a pair of Raman lasers. The Raman lasers render each isolated honeycomb layer a Chern insulator. With finite interlayer coupling, the bulk gap of the system closes at certain out-of-plane momenta due to Raman assisted tunnelling and result in the Weyl semimetal phase. Using experimentally relevant parameters, we show that both one and two pairs of Weyl points can be realized by tuning the interlayer coupling strength. We suggest that Landau-Zener tunnelling ca…
We investigate the helically-propagating edge states associated with pseudo-Landau levels in strained honeycomb lattices. We exploit chiral symmetry to derive a general criterion for the existence of these propagating edge states in the presence of only nearest-neighbour hoppings and we verify our criterion using numerical simulations of both uni-axially and trigonally strained honeycomb lattices. We show that the propagation of the helical edge state can be controlled by engineering the shape of the edges. Sensitivity to chiral-symmetry-breaking next-nearest-neighbour hoppings is assessed. Ou…
We investigate the topological properties of a resonantly shaken one-dimensional optical lattice system, where the lattice position is periodically driven with two harmonic frequencies to generate one- and two-photon couplings between the two lowest orbitals. In a two-band approximation, we numerically show that degenerate edge states appear under a certain driving condition and that the corresponding topological phase is protected by the chiral symmetry of the periodically driven system. The system's micromotion is characterized with oscillating Zak phases and we find that the Zak phases are …
We propose an experimentally feasible setup with ultracold alkaline earth atoms to simulate the dynamics of U(1) lattice gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions with a Chern-Simons term. To this end we consider the ground state properties of spin-5/2 alkaline earth fermions in a honeycomb lattice. We use the Gutzwiller projected variational approach in the strongly repulsive regime in the case of filling 1/6. The ground state of the system is a chiral spin liquid state with $2π/3$ flux per plaquette, which spontaneously violates time reversal invariance. We demonstrate that due to the breaking of tim…
We investigate the spectrum and eigenstates of ultracold fermionic atoms in the bilayer honeycomb optical lattice. In the low energy approximation, the dispersion relation has parabolic form and the quasiparticles are chiral. In the presence of the effective magnetic field, which is created for the system with optical means, the energy spectrum shows an unconventional Landau level structure. Furthermore, the experimental detection of the spectrum is proposed with the Bragg scattering techniques.

Photonic materials are a rapidly growing platform for studying condensed matter physics with light, where the exquisite control capability is allowing us to learn about the relation between microscopic dynamics and macroscopic properties. One of the most interesting aspects of condensed matter is the interplay between interactions and the effect of an external magnetic field or rotation, responsible for a plethora of rich phenomena -- Hall physics and quantized vortex arrays. At first sight, however, these effects for photons seem vetoed: they do not interact with each other and they are immun…
Large symmetry groups in quantum many-body systems could strongly enhance quantum fluctuations and thereby stabilize exotic quantum phases. Frustrated interactions were long known to have similar effects. Here we intertwine the large SU($N$) symmetry and the frustration in a $J_1$-$J_2$ SU($N$) Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice, where $J_1$ is the nearest-neighbor coupling and $J_2$ is the next-nearest-neighbor coupling. With a large-$N$ analysis, we obtain a rich phase diagram by varying both $N$ and the ratio $J_2/J_1$. The ground states include Dirac spin liquid, chiral spin liquid, v…
We show that the nonlinear transport of bosonic excitations in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice of spin-orbit coupled Rydberg atoms gives rise to disordered quantum phases which are candidates for quantum spin liquids. As recently demonstrated in [Lienhard et al. Phys. Rev. X, 10, 021031 (2020)] the spin-orbit coupling breaks time-reversal and chiral symmetries and leads to a tunable density-dependent complex hopping of the hard-core bosons or equivalently to complex XY spin interactions. Using exact diagonalization (ED) we numerically investigate the phase diagram resulting from the compet…
Conflicting predictions have been made for the ground state of the SU(3) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice: Tensor network simulations found a plaquette order [Zhao et al, Phys. Rev. B 85, 134416 (2012)], where singlets are formed on hexagons, while linear flavor-wave theory (LFWT) suggested a dimerized, color ordered state [Lee and Yang, Phys. Rev. B 85, 100402 (2012)]. In this work we show that the former state is the true ground state by a systematic study with infinite projected-entangled pair states (iPEPS), for which the accuracy can be systematically controlled by the so-called …
We show that the magnetic field produced by a chiral ferromagnetic film can be applied to control ultracold atoms. The film will act as a magnetic mirror or a reflection grating for ultracold atoms when it is in the helical phase or the skyrmion crystal phase respectively. By applying a bias magnetic field and a time-dependent magnetic field, one-dimensional or two-dimensional magnetic lattices including honeycomb, Kagome, triangular types can be created to trap the ultracold atoms. We have also discussed the trapping height, potential barrier, trapping frequency, and Majorana loss rate for ea…
We investigate the properties of the nearest-neighbor singlet pairing and the emergence of d-wave superconductivity in the doped honeycomb lattice considering the limit of large interactions and the $t-J_1-J_2$ model. First, by applying a renormalized mean-field procedure as well as slave-boson theories which account for the proximity to the Mott insulating state, we confirm the emergence of d-wave superconductivity in agreement with earlier works. We show that a small but finite $J_2$ spin coupling between next-nearest neighbors stabilizes d-wave symmetry compared to the extended s-wave scena…
