We present observations of linear polarization from dust thermal emission at 850 $μm$ towards the starless cloud L183. These data were obtained at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) camera in conjunction with its polarimeter POL-2. Polarized dust emission traces the plane-of-sky magnetic field structure in the cloud, thus allowing us to investigate the role of magnetic fields in the formation and evolution of its starless core. To interpret these measurements, we first calculate the dust temperature and column density in L183 by fitting the spectral energy distribution obtained by combining data from the JCMT and the $\textit{Herschel}$ space observatory. We used the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi technique to measure the magnetic field strength in five sub-regions of the cloud, and we find values ranging from $\sim120\pm18~μG$ to $\sim270\pm64~μG$ in agreement with previous studies. Combined with an average hydrogen column density ($N_{\text{H}_2}$) of $\sim 1.5 \times 10^{22} $cm$^{-2}$ in the cloud, we also find that all five sub-regions are magnetically subcritical. These results indicate that the magnetic field in L183 is sufficiently strong to oppose the gravitational collapse of the cloud.
Compact substructure is expected to arise in a starless core as mass becomes concentrated in the central region likely to form a protostar. Additionally, multiple peaks may form if fragmentation occurs. We present ALMA Cycle 2 observations of 60 starless and protostellar cores in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. We detect eight compact substructures which are >15 arcsec from the nearest Spitzer YSO. Only one of these has strong evidence for being truly starless after considering ancillary data, e.g., from Herschel and X-ray telescopes. An additional extended emission structure has tentative evid…
We present a near-infrared extinction study of nine dense cores at evolutionary stages between starless to Class I. Our results show that the density structure of all but one observed cores can be modeled with a single power law rho \propto r^p between ~ 0.2R-R of the cores. The starless cores in our sample show two different types of density structures, one follows p ~ -1.0 and the other follows p ~ -2.5, while the protostellar cores all have p ~ -2.5. The similarity between the prestellar cores with p ~ -2.5 and protostellar cores implies that those prestellar cores could be evolving towards…
Interpreting the nature of starless cores has been a prominent goal in star formation for many years. In order to characterise the evolutionary stages of these objects, we perform synthetic observations of a numerical simulation of a turbulent molecular cloud. We find that nearly all cores that we detect are associated with filaments and eventually form protostars. We conclude that observed starless cores which appear Jeans unstable are only marginally larger than their respective Jeans masses (within a factor of 3). We note single dish observations such as those performed with the JCMT appear…
G10.21-0.31 is a 70 $μ$m-dark high-mass starless core ($M>300$ $\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ within $r<0.15$ pc) identified in $Spitzer$, $Herschel$, and APEX continuum surveys, and is believed to harbor the initial stages of high-mass star formation. We present ALMA and SMA observations to resolve the internal structure of this promising high-mass starless core. Sensitive high-resolution ALMA 1.3 mm dust continuum emission reveals three cores of mass ranging 11-18 $\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, characterized by a turbulent fragmentation. Core 1, 2, and 3 represent a coherent evolution at three different evolut…
We present SMA and CARMA continuum and spectral line observations of five dense cores located in the Perseus and Ophiuchus molecular clouds whose masses exceed their thermal Jeans masses. Three of these cores have previously been identified as being starless and two have been classified as being possibly protostellar. We find that one core is certainly protostellar. The other four cores, however, are starless and undetected in both C18O (2-1) and 1.3mm continuum emission. These four starless cores have flat density profiles out to at least 0.006 pc, which is typical for starless cores in gener…

From a survey of 729 cores based on JCMT/SCUBA data, we present an analysis of 17 candidate starless cores with masses that exceed their stable Jeans masses. We re-examine the classification of these super-Jeans cores using Spitzer maps and find that 3 are re-classified as protostellar, 11 have ambiguous emission near the core positions, and 3 appear to be genuinely starless. We suggest the 3 starless and 11 undetermined super-Jeans cores represent excellent targets for future observational and computational study to understand the evolution of dense cores and the process of star formation.
We present the results of our investigation of the star-forming potential in the Perseus star-forming complex. We build on previous starless core, protostellar core, and young stellar object (YSO) catalogs from Spitzer, Herschel, and SCUBA observations in the literature. We place the cores and YSOs within seven star-forming clumps based on column densities greater than 5x10^21 cm^-2. We calculate the mean density and free-fall time for 69 starless cores as 5.55x10^-19 gcm^-3 and 0.1 Myr,respectively, and we estimate the star formation rate for the near future as 150 Msun Myr^-1. According to B…
The Pipe nebula is a massive, nearby, filamentary dark molecular cloud with a low star-formation efficiency threaded by a uniform magnetic field perpendicular to its main axis. It harbors more than a hundred, mostly quiescent, very chemically young starless cores. The cloud is, therefore, a good laboratory to study the earliest stages of the star-formation process. We aim to investigate the primordial conditions and the relation among physical, chemical, and magnetic properties in the evolution of low-mass starless cores. We used the IRAM 30-m telescope to map the 1.2 mm dust continuum emissio…
We carry out an ALMA $\rm N_2D^+$(3-2) and 1.3~mm continuum survey towards 32 high mass surface density regions in seven Infrared Dark Clouds with the aim of finding massive starless cores, which may be the initial conditions for the formation of massive stars. Cores showing strong $\rm N_2D^+$(3-2) emission are expected to be highly deuterated and indicative of early, potentially pre-stellar stages of star formation. We also present maps of these regions in ancillary line tracers, including C$^{18}$O(2-1), DCN(3-2) and DCO$^+$(3-2). Over 100 $\rm N_2D^+$ cores are identified with our newly de…
We detected carbon-chain molecules (CCMs) HC2n+1N (n=1-3) and C3S in Ku band as well as {high-energy excitation lines including C4H N=9-8, J=17/2-15/2, 19/2-17/2, and CH3CCH J=5-4, K=2 in the 3 mm band toward a starless core called the eastern molecular core (EMC) of L1489 IRS. Maps of all the observed lines were also obtained. Comparisons with a number of early starless cores and WCCC source L1527 show that the column densities of C4H and CH3CCH are close to those of L1527, and the CH3CCH column densities of the EMC and L1527 are slightly higher than those of TMC-1. The EMC and L1527 have sim…
This paper discusses the statistics of internal motions in starless dense cores and the relation of these motions to core density and evolution. Four spectral lines from three molecular species are analyzed from single-pointing and mapped observations of several tens of starless cores. Blue asymmetric profiles are dominant, indicating that inward motions are prevalent in sufficiently dense starless cores. These blue profiles are found to be more abundant, and their asymmetry is bluer, at core positions with stronger $\rm N_2H^+$ line emission or higher column density. Thirty three starless cor…

We present Spitzer observations of a sample of 12 starless cores selected to have prominent 24 micron shadows. The Spitzer images show 8 and 24 micron shadows and in some cases 70 micron shadows; these spatially resolved absorption features trace the densest regions of the cores. We have carried out a 12CO (2-1) and 13CO (2-1) mapping survey of these cores with the Heinrich Hertz Telescope (HHT). We use the shadow features to derive optical depth maps. We derive molecular masses for the cores and the surrounding environment; we find that the 24 micron shadow masses are always greater than or e…
Observations carried out toward starless and pre-stellar cores have revealed that complex organic molecules are prevalent in these objects, but it is unclear what chemical processes are involved in their formation. Recently, it has been shown that complex organics are preferentially produced at an intermediate-density shell within the L1544 pre-stellar core at radial distances of ~4000 au with respect to the core center. However, the spatial distribution of complex organics has only been inferred toward this core and it remains unknown whether these species present a similar behaviour in other…
We present here findings for C18O depletion in eight starless cores in Taurus: TMC-2, L1498, L1512, L1489, L1517B, L1521E, L1495A-S, and L1544. We compare observations of the C18O J=2-1 transition taken with the ALMA prototype receiver on the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope to results of radiative transfer modeling using RATRAN. We use temperature and density profiles calculated from dust continuum radiative transfer models to model the C18O emission. We present modeling of three cores, TMC-2, L1489, and L1495A-S, which have not been modeled before and compare our results for the five c…
The Pipe Nebula is a massive, nearby dark molecular cloud with a low star-formation efficiency which makes it a good laboratory to study the very early stages of the star formation process. The Pipe Nebula is largely filamentary, and appears to be threaded by a uniform magnetic field at scales of few parsecs, perpendicular to its main axis. The field is only locally perturbed in a few regions, such as the only active cluster forming core B59. The aim of this study is to investigate primordial conditions in low-mass pre-stellar cores and how they relate to the local magnetic field in the cloud.…
(Abridged) The initial physical conditions of high-mass stars and protoclusters remain poorly characterized. To this end we present the first targeted ALMA 1.3mm continuum and spectral line survey towards high-mass starless clump candidates, selecting a sample of 12 of the most massive candidates ($400-4000\, M_\odot$) within 5 kpc. The joint 12+7m array maps have a high spatial resolution of $\sim 3000\, \mathrm{au}$ ($\sim 0.8^{\prime\prime}$) and have point source mass-completeness down to $\sim 0.3\, M_\odot$ at $6σ$ (or $1σ$ column density sensitivity of $1.1\times10^{22}\, \mathrm{cm^{-2…
We observed the $J=5-4$ rotational lines of the normal species and three $^{13}$C isotopologues of HC$_{3}$N at the 45 GHz band toward two low-mass starless cores, L1521B and L134N (L183), using the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope in order to study the main formation pathways of HC$_{3}$N in each core. The abundance ratios of the three $^{13}$C isotopologues in L1521B are derived to be [H$^{13}$CCCN]:[HC$^{13}$CCN]:[HCC$^{13}$CN] = 0.98 (+- 0.14) : 1.00 : 1.52 (+- 0.16) (1 sigma). The fractionation pattern is consistent with that at the cyanopolyyne peak in Taurus Molecular Cloud-1. This fractio…

Pre-stellar cores within molecular clouds provide the very initial conditions in which stars are formed. We use the IRAM 30m telescope and the PdBI to study the chemical and physical properties of the starless core FeSt 1-457 (Core 109), in the Pipe nebula. We fit the hyperfine structure of the N2H+(1-0) IRAM 30m data. This allow us to measure with high precision the velocity field, line widths and opacity and derive the excitation temperature and column density in the core. We use a modified Bonnor-Ebert sphere model adding a temperature gradient towards the center to fit the 1.2 mm continuum…
We carried out survey observations of HC$_{3}$N and HC$_{5}$N in the 42$-$45 GHz band toward 17 high-mass starless cores (HMSCs) and 35 high-mass protostellar objects (HMPOs) with the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope. We have detected HC$_{3}$N from 15 HMSCs and 28 HMPOs, and HC$_{5}$N from 5 HMSCs and 14 HMPOs, respectively. The average values of the column density of HC$_{3}$N are found to be ($5.7 \pm 0.7$)$\times 10^{12}$ and ($1.03 \pm 0.12$)$\times 10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ in HMSCs and HMPOs, respectively. The average values of the fractional abundance of HC$_{3}$N are derived to be ($6.6 \pm 0.8…
Young massive stars are usually found embedded in dense and massive molecular clumps and are known for being highly obscured and distant. During their formation process, deuteration is regarded as a potentially good indicator of the formation stage. Therefore, proper observations of such deuterated molecules are crucial, but still, hard to perform. In this work, we test the observability of the transition o-H$_2$D$^+(1_{10}$-$1_{11})$, using a synthetic source, to understand how the physical characteristics are reflected in observations through interferometers and single-dish telescopes. In or…
We aim to investigate the polarization properties of a starless core in a very early evolutionary stage. Linear polarization data reveal the properties of the dust grains in the distinct phases of the interstellar medium. Our goal is to investigate how the polarization degree and angle correlate with the cloud and core gas. We use optical, near infrared and submillimeter polarization observations toward the starless object Pipe-109 in the Pipe nebula. Our data cover a physical scale range of 0.08 to 0.4 pc, comprising the dense gas, envelope and the surrounding cloud. The cloud polarization is…
The mass distribution of dense cores is a potential key to understand the process of star formation. Applying dendrogram analysis to the CARMA-NRO Orion C$^{18}$O ($J$=1--0) data, we identify 2342 dense cores, about 22 \% of which have virial ratios smaller than 2, and can be classified as gravitationally bound cores. The derived core mass function (CMF) for bound starless cores which are not associate with protostars has a slope similar to Salpeter's initial mass function (IMF) for the mass range above 1 $M_\odot$, with a peak at $\sim$ 0.1 $M_\odot$. We divide the cloud into four parts based…
A sample of 1.3 mm continuum cores in the Dragon infrared dark cloud (also known as G28.37+0.07 or G28.34+0.06) is analyzed statistically. Based on their association with molecular outflows, the sample is divided into protostellar and starless cores. Statistical tests suggest that the protostellar cores are more massive than the starless cores, even after temperature and opacity biases are accounted for. We suggest that the mass difference indicates core mass growth since their formation. The mass growth implies that massive star formation may not have to start with massive prestellar cores, d…
Aims: Understanding the fragmentation and collapse properties of the dense gas during the onset of high-mass star formation. Methods: We observed the massive (~800M_sun) starless gas clump IRDC18310-4 with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) at sub-arcsecond resolution in the 1.07mm continuum andN2H+(3-2) line emission. Results: Zooming from a single-dish low-resolution map to previous 3mm PdBI data, and now the new 1.07mm continuum observations, the sub-structures hierarchically fragment on the increasingly smaller spatial scales. While the fragment separations may still be roughly cons…
We have carried out observations of CCH and its two $^{13}$C isotopologues, $^{13}$CCH and C$^{13}$CH, in the 84 - 88 GHz band toward two starless cores, L1521B and L134N (L183), using the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope. We have detected C$^{13}$CH with a signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of 4, whereas no line of $^{13}$CCH was detected in either the dark clouds. The column densities of the normal species were derived to be ($1.66 \pm 0.18$)$\times 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ and ($7.3 \pm 0.9$)$\times 10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ ($1 σ$) in L1521B and L134N, respectively. The column density ratios of $N$(C$^{13}$CH)/$…
(abridged) We develop the mid-infrared extinction (MIREX) mapping technique of Butler & Tan (2009, Paper I), presenting a new method to correct for the Galactic foreground emission based on observed saturation in independent cores. Using Spitzer GLIMPSE 8 micron images, this allows us to accurately probe mass surface densities, Sigma, up to ~0.5g/cm^2 with 2" resolution. We then characterize the structure of 42 massive starless and early-stage IRDC cores and their surrounding clumps, measuring Sigma_cl(r) from the core/clump centers. We first assess the properties of the core/clump at a scale …
Motivated by recent observational searches of sub-structure in starless molecular cloud cores, we investigate the evolution of density perturbations on scales smaller than the Jeans length embedded in contracting isothermal clouds, adopting the same formalism developed for the expanding Universe and the solar wind. We find that initially small amplitude, Jeans-stable perturbations (propagating as sound waves in the absence of a magnetic field), are amplified adiabatically during the contraction, approximately conserving the wave action density, until they either become nonlinear and steepen in…
To characterize the initial conditions for intermediate- to high-mass star formation, we observed two Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) that remain absorption features up to 70mum wavelength, with the PdBI in the 3.23mm dust continuum as well as the N2H+(1--0) and 13CS(2-1) line emission. While IRDC19175-4 is clearly detected in the 3.23mm continuum, the second source in the field, IRDC19175-5, is only barely observable above the 3sigma continuum detection threshold. However, the N2H+(1-0) observations reveal 17 separate sub-sources in the vicinity of the two IRDCs. Most of them exhibit low levels …
Aims: Our aim is to understand the evolutionary sequence of high-mass star formation from the earliest evolutionary stage of high-mass starless cores, via high-mass cores with embedded low- to intermediate-mass objects, to finally high-mass protostellar objects. Methods: Herschel far-infrared PACS and SPIRE observations are combined with existing data at longer and shorter wavelengths to characterize the spectral and physical evolution of massive star-forming regions. Results: The new Herschel images spectacularly show the evolution of the youngest and cold high-mass star-forming regions from …
Context The Vela Molecular Ridge is one of the nearest (700 pc) giant molecular cloud (GMC) complexes hosting intermediate-mass (up to early B, late O stars) star formation, and is located in the outer Galaxy, inside the Galactic plane. Vela C is one of the GMCs making up the Vela Molecular Ridge, and exhibits both sub-regions of robust and sub-regions of more quiescent star formation activity, with both low- and intermediate(high)-mass star formation in progress. Aims We aim to study the individual and global properties of dense dust cores in Vela C, and aim to search for spatial variations i…
We investigated the chemistry of nitrogen--containing species, principally isotopomers of CN, HCN, and HNC, in a sample of pre-protostellar cores. We used the IRAM 30 m telescope to measure the emission in rotational and hyperfine transitions of CN, HCN, 13CN, H13CN, HN13C, and HC15N, in L 1544, L 183, Oph D, L 1517B, L 310. The observations were made along axial cuts through the dust emission peak, at a number of regularly--spaced offset positions. The observations were reduced and analyzed to obtain the column densities, using the measurements of the less abundant isotopic variants in order …
We report the results of an HCO+ (3-2) and N2D+ (3-2) molecular line survey performed toward 91 dense cores in the Perseus molecular cloud using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, to identify the fraction of starless and protostellar cores with systematic radial motions. We quantify the HCO+ asymmetry using a dimensionless asymmetry parameter $δ_v$, and identify 20 cores with significant blue or red line asymmetries in optically-thick emission indicative of collapsing or expanding motions, respectively. We separately fit the HCO+ profiles with an analytic collapse model and determine contracti…
We use the deuteration of $c$-$\mathrm{C_{3}H_{2}}$ to probe the physical parameters of starless and protostellar cores, related to their evolutionary states, and compare it to the $\mathrm{N_{2}H^{+}}$-deuteration in order to study possible differences between the deuteration of C- and N-bearing species. We observed the main species $c$-$\mathrm{C_{3}H_{2}}$, the singly and doubly deuterated species $c$-$\mathrm{C_{3}HD}$ and $c$-$\mathrm{C_{3}D_{2}}$, as well as the isotopologue $c$-$\mathrm{{H^{13}CC_{2}H}}$ toward 10 starless cores and 5 protostars in the Taurus and Perseus Complexes. We e…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the submillimeter dust continuum and H2D+ 1_{10}-1_{11} emission toward two evolved, potentially protostellar cores within the Ophiuchus molecular cloud, Oph A SM1 and SM1N. The data reveal small-scale condensations within both cores, with mass upper limits of M <~ 0.02M_Sun (~ 20 M_Jup). The SM1 condensation is consistent with a nearly-symmetric Gaussian source with a width of only 37 AU. The SM1N condensation is elongated, and extends 500 AU along its major axis. No evidence for substructure is seen in either sour…
Seven isolated, nearby low-mass starless molecular cloud cores have been observed as part of the Herschel key program Earliest Phases of Star formation (EPoS). By applying a ray-tracing technique to the obtained continuum emission and complementary (sub)mm emission maps, we derive the physical structure (density, dust temperature) of these cloud cores. We present observations of the 12CO, 13CO, and C18O (2-1) and N2H+ (1-0) transitions towards the same cores. Based on the density and temperature profiles, we apply time-dependent chemical and line-radiative transfer modeling and compare the mod…
(abridged) Methods: We derive maps of submillimeter dust optical depth and effective dust temperature from Herschel data that were calibrated against Planck. After calibration, we then fit a modified blackbody to the long-wavelength Herschel data, using the Planck-derived dust opacity spectral index beta, derived on scales of 30' (or ~1 pc). We use this model to make predictions of the submillimeter flux density at 850 micron, and we compare these in turn with APEX-Laboca observations. Results: A comparison of the submillimeter dust optical depth and near-infrared extinction data reveals evide…
Using observations of cores to infer their intrinsic properties requires the solution of several poorly constrained inverse problems. Here we address one of these problems, namely to deduce from the projected aspect ratios of the cores in Ophiuchus their intrinsic three-dimensional shapes. Four models are proposed, all based on the standard assumption that cores are randomly orientated ellipsoids, and on the further assumption that a core's shape is not correlated with its absolute size. The first and simplest model, M1, has a single free parameter, and assumes that the relative axes of a core…
In the context of the IRAM 30m Large Program GEMS, we present a study of thioformaldehyde in several starless cores located in star-forming filaments of Taurus, Perseus, and Orion. We investigate the influence of the environmental conditions on the abundances of these molecules in the cores, and the effect of time evolution. We have modelled the observed lines of H2CS, HDCS, and D2CS using the radiative transfer code RADEX. We have also used the chemical code Nautilus to model the evolution of these species depending on the characteristics of the starless cores. We derive column densities and …
Various spectral emission lines from star-forming molecular cloud core L1517B manifest red asymmetric double-peaked profiles with stronger red peaks and weaker blue peaks, in contrast to the oft-observed blue-skewed molecular spectral line profiles with blue peaks stronger than red peaks. Invoking a spherically symmetric general polytropic hydrodynamic shock model for the envelope expansion with core collapse (EECC) phase, we show the radial flow velocity, mass density and temperature structures of self-similar evolution for L1517B in a dynamically consistent manner. By prescribing simple radi…
Low-mass stars are generally understood to form by the gravitational collapse of the dense molecular clouds known as starless cores. Continuum observations have not been able to distinguish among the several different hypotheses that describe the collapse because the predicted density distributions are the almost the same, as they are for all spherical self-gravitating clouds. However, the predicted contraction velocities are different enough that the models can be discriminated by comparing the velocities at large and small radii. This can be done by observing at least two different molecular…
We recently proposed that molecular cloud dense cores undergo a prolonged period of quasi-static contraction prior to true collapse. This theory could explain the observation that many starless cores exhibit, through their spectral line profiles, signs of inward motion. We now use our model, together with a publicly available radiative transfer code, to determine the emission from three commonly used species - N2H+, CS, and HCN. A representative dense core of 3 Msun that has been contracting for 1 Myr has line profiles that qualitatively match the observed ones. In particular, optically thick …
