The Fermi-polaron problem of a mobile impurity interacting with fermionic medium emerges in various contexts, ranging from the foundations of Landau's Fermi-liquid theory to electron-exciton interaction in semiconductors, to unusual properties of high-temperature superconductors. While classically the medium provides only a dissipative environment to the impurity, quantum picture of polaronic dressing is more intricate and arises from the interplay of few- and many-body aspects of the problem. The conventional expectation for the dynamics of Fermi polarons is that it is dissipative in character, and any excess energy is rapidly emitted away from the impurity as particle-hole excitations. Here we report a strikingly different type of polaron dynamics in a one-dimensional system of the impurity interacting repulsively with the fermions. When the total momentum of the system equals the Fermi momentum, there emerges a sharp collective mode corresponding to long-lived oscillations of the polaronic cloud surrounding the impurity. This mode can be observed experimentally with ultracold atoms using Ramsey interferometry and radio-frequency spectroscopy.
Polarons can serve as an ideal platform to identify few-body correlations in tackling complex many-body problems. In this work, we reveal various crystalline few-body correlations smoothly emergent from the mass-imbalanced Fermi polarons in two dimensions. A unified variational approach up to three particle-hole excitations allows us to extract the dominant dimer, trimer or tetramer correlation in a single framework. When the fermion-impurity mass ratio is beyond certain critical value, the Fermi polaron is found to undergo a smooth crossover, instead of a sharp transition, from the polaronic …
We study theoretically the collective mode spectrum of a strongly imbalanced two-component unitary Fermi gas in a cigar-shaped trap, where the minority species forms a gas of polarons. We describe the collective breathing mode of the gas in terms of the Fermi liquid kinetic equation taking collisions into account using the method of moments. Our results for the frequency and damping of the longitudinal in-phase breathing mode are in good quantitative agreement with an experiment by Nascimbène et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 170402 (2009)] and interpolate between a hydrodynamic and a collisionles…
The interplay between measurement and quantum correlations in many-body systems can lead to novel types of collective phenomena which are not accessible in isolated systems. In this work, we merge the Zeno-paradigm of quantum measurement theory with the concept of polarons in condensed-matter physics. The resulting quantum-Zeno Fermi-polaron is a quasi-particle which emerges for lossy impurities interacting with a quantum-degenerate bath of fermions. For loss rates of the order of the impurity-fermion binding energy the quasi-particle is short lived. However, we show that in the strongly dissi…
We analyze the properties of impurities immersed in a vortex lattice formed by ultracold bosons in the mean field quantum Hall regime. In addition to the effects of a periodic lattice potential, the impurity is dressed by collective modes with parabolic dispersion (Tkachenko modes). We derive the effective polaron model, which contains a marginal impurity-phonon interaction. The polaron spectral function exhibits a Lorentzian broadening for arbitrarily small wave vectors even at zero temperature, in contrast with the result for optical or acoustic phonons. The anomalous damping of Tkachenko po…
We study the impurity problem in a gas of $^{173}$Yb atoms near the recently discovered orbital Feshbach resonance. In an orbital Feshbach resonance, atoms in the electronic ground state $^1S_0$ interact with those in the long-lived excited $^3P_0$ state with magnetically tunable interactions. We consider an impurity atom with a given hyperfine spin in the $^3P_0$ state interacting with a single-component Fermi sea of atoms in the ground $^1S_0$ manifold. Close to the orbital Feshbach resonance, the impurity can induce collective particle-hole excitations out of the Fermi sea, which can be reg…
Recent LENS experiment on a 3D Fermi gas has reported a negative effective mass ($m^*<0$) of Fermi polarons in the strongly repulsive regime. There naturally arise a question whether the negative $m^*$ is a precursor of the instability towards phase separation (or itinerant ferromagnetism). In this work, we make use of the exact solutions to study the ground state and excitation properties of repulsive Fermi polarons in 1D, which can also exhibit a negative $m^*$ in the super Tonks-Girardeau regime. By analyzing the total spin, quasi-momentum distribution and pair correlations, we conclude tha…
We propose a new protocol to examine many-polaron properties in a cold atom experiment. Initially, polaronic clouds are prepared around the opposite edges of a majority gas cloud. After time evolution, the collision of two clouds exhibits various polaronic effects. To see how {\it collective} properties of many polarons with mediated interactions appear in the case in which the impurity and majority gases are composed of mass-balanced fermions with different spin components, we perform a nonlinear hydrodynamic simulation for collisional dynamics of two Fermi polaronic clouds. We found that the…
The Dicke model extended to two bosons of different frequencies or equivalent generalized Jahn-Teller lattice model are shown to exhibit a spontaneous quantum phase transition between the polaron-modified "quasi-normal" and squeezed "radiation" phase with the transition point dependent on the frequencies. In a finite lattice a mixed domain of coexistence of the quasi-normal and modified radiation phase is created within the quasi-normal phase domain. There occurs a field-directed oscillation-assisted tunneling (hopping). The field is driven by simultaneous squeezing and polaron-dressing of the…
Understanding the emergence of collective organizational phenomena is a major goal in many fields of physics from condensed matter to cosmology. Using a recently introduced manybody perturbation formalism for fermions, we propose a mechanism for the emergence of collective behavior, specifically superfluidity, driven by quantum statistics and the enforcement of the Pauli principle through the selection of normal modes. The method, which is called symmetry invariant perturbation theory (SPT), uses group theory and graphical techniques to solve the manybody Schrodinger equation through first ord…
The emergence of quasiparticles in strongly interacting matter represents one of the cornerstones of modern physics. However, when different phases of matter compete near a quantum critical point, the very existence of quasiparticles comes under question. Here we create Bose polarons near quantum criticality by immersing atomic impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with near-resonant interactions. Using locally-resolved radiofrequency spectroscopy, we probe the energy, spectral width, and short-range correlations of the impurities as a function of temperature. Far below the superfluid…
Mobile impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate form quasiparticles called polarons. Here, we show that two such polarons can bind to form a bound bipolaron state. Its emergence is caused by an induced nonlocal interaction mediated by density oscillations in the condensate, and we derive using field theory an effective Schrödinger equation describing this for arbitrarily strong impurity-boson interaction. We furthermore compare with Quantum Monte Carlo simulations finding remarkable agreement, which underlines the predictive power of the developed theory. It is found that bipolaron formation t…
We consider the prospects for quantum simulation of condensed matter models exhibiting strong electron-phonon coupling using a hybrid platform of trapped laser-cooled ions interacting with an ultracold atomic gas. This system naturally posesses a phonon structure, in contrast to the standard optical lattice scenarios usually employed with ultracold atoms in which the lattice is generated by laser light and thus it remains static. We derive the effective Hamiltonian describing the general system and discuss the arising energy scales, relating the results to commonly employed extended Hubbard-Ho…
Recent studies have demonstrated that higher than two-body bath-impurity correlations are not important for quantitatively describing the ground state of the Bose polaron. Motivated by the above, we employ the so-called Gross Ansatz (GA) approach to unravel the stationary and dynamical properties of the homogeneous one-dimensional Bose-polaron for different impurity momenta and bath-impurity couplings. We explicate that the character of the equilibrium state crossovers from the quasi-particle Bose polaron regime to the collective-excitation stationary dark-bright soliton for varying impurity m…

We investigate the crossover of the impurity-induced dynamics, in trapped one-dimensional Bose polarons subject to radio frequency (rf) pulses of varying intensity, from an adiabatic to a diabatic regime. Utilizing adiabatic pulses for either weak repulsive or attractive impurity-medium interactions, a multitude of polaronic excitations or mode-couplings of the impurity-bath interaction with the collective breathing motion of the bosonic medium are spectrally resolved. We find that for strongly repulsive impurity-bath interactions, a temporal orthogonality catastrophe manifests in resonances i…
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of relaxation and dressing of a mobile impurity suddenly immersed--or quenched-- into a zero temperature homogeneous Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) with velocity $v$. A many body generalization of Weisskopf-Wigner theory is implemented to obtain the impurity fidelity, reduced density matrix and entanglement entropy. The dynamics depend crucially on the Mach number $β=v/c$, with $c$ the speed of sound of superfluid phonons and features many different time scales. Quantum Zeno behavior at early time is followed by relaxational and dressing dynamics determine…
