A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is an attack wherein multiple compromised computer systems flood the bandwidth and/or resources of a target, such as a server, website or other network resource, and cause a denial of service for users of the targeted resource. The flood of incoming messages, connection requests or malformed packets to the target system forces it to slow down or even crash and shut down, thereby denying service to legitimate users or systems. This paper presents a literature review of DDoS attacks and the common defense mechanisms available. It also presents a literature review of the defenses for low-rate DDoS attacks that have not been handled effectively hitherto.
In this paper a vulnerability in the Z-Wave protocol specification, especially in the S0 Z-Wave protocol is presented. Devices supporting this standard can be blocked (denial of service) through continuous S0 NonceGet requests. This way a whole network can be blocked if the attacked devices are Z-Wave network controller. This also effects S2 network controller as long as they support S0 NonceGet requests. As only a minimal amount of nonce requests (1 per ~2 seconds) is required to conduct the attack it cannot be prevented by standard countermeasures against jamming.
Do we have the time for IRM?: Service denial attacks and SDN-based defences
This document describes a dataset with diverse types of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks and Man-in-the-Middle (MiTM) attacks. The data is available at the following DOI 10.21227/mewp-g646. This document describes the data collection process and provides useful information on how data can be employed to devise models for cybersecurity in critical infrastructures using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Blockchain technology (BT) Ethereum Smart Contracts allows programmable transactions that involve the transfer of monetary assets among peers on a BT network independent of a central authorizing agency. Ethereum Smart Contracts are programs that are deployed as decentralized applications, having the building blocks of the blockchain consensus protocol. This technology enables consumers to make agreements in a transparent and conflict-free environment. However, the security vulnerabilities within these smart contracts are a potential threat to the applications and their consumers and have shown…
In this paper, we identify that memory performance plays a crucial role in the feasibility and effectiveness for performing denial-of-service attacks on shared cache. Based on this insight, we introduce new cache DoS attacks, which can be mounted from the user-space and can cause extreme worst-case execution time (WCET) impacts to cross-core victims -- even if the shared cache is partitioned -- by taking advantage of the platform's memory address mapping information and HugePage support. We deploy these enhanced attacks on two popular embedded out-of-order multicore platforms using both synthe…
Serverless computing is the latest paradigm in cloud computing, offering a framework for the development of event driven, pay-as-you-go functions in a highly scalable environment. While these traits offer a powerful new development paradigm, they have also given rise to a new form of cyber-attack known as Denial of Wallet (forced financial exhaustion). In this work, we define and identify the threat of Denial of Wallet and its potential attack patterns. Also, we demonstrate how this new form of attack can potentially circumvent existing mitigation systems developed for a similar style of attac…
More and more industrial devices are connected to IP-based networks, as this is essential for the success of Industry 4.0. However, this interconnection also results in an increased attack surface for various network-based attacks. One of the easiest attacks to carry out are DoS attacks, in which the attacked target is overloaded due to high network traffic and corresponding CPU load. Therefore, the attacked device can no longer provide its regular services. This is especially critical for devices, which perform real-time operations in industrial processes. To protect against DoS attacks, ther…
Proof-of-work (PoW) cryptocurrency blockchains like Bitcoin secure vast amounts of money. Their operators, called miners, expend resources to generate blocks and receive monetary rewards for their effort. Blockchains are, in principle, attractive targets for Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks: There is fierce competition among coins, as well as potential gains from short selling. Classical DoS attacks, however, typically target a few servers and cannot scale to systems with many nodes. There have been no successful DoS attacks to date against prominent cryptocurrencies. We present Blockchain DoS …
Permissionless distributed ledgers provide a promising approach to deal with the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. Since IoT devices mostly generate data transactions and micropayments, distributed ledgers that use fees to regulate the network access are not an optimal choice. In this paper, we study a feeless architecture developed by IOTA and designed specifically for the IoT. Due to the lack of fees, malicious nodes can exploit this feature to generate an unbounded number of transactions and perform a denial of service attacks. We propose to mitigate these attacks through verifiable delay …
Web services use server-side input sanitization to guard against harmful input. Some web services publish their sanitization logic to make their client interface more usable, e.g., allowing clients to debug invalid requests locally. However, this usability practice poses a security risk. Specifically, services may share the regexes they use to sanitize input strings -- and regex-based denial of service (ReDoS) is an emerging threat. Although prominent service outages caused by ReDoS have spurred interest in this topic, we know little about the degree to which live web services are vulnerable t…
Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) networks are increasingly adopted by automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). C-V2X, as defined in 3GPP Release 14 Mode 4, allows vehicles to self-manage the network in absence of a cellular base-station. Since C-V2X networks convey safety-critical messages, it is crucial to assess their security posture. This work contributes a novel set of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks on C-V2X networks operating in Mode 4. The attacks are caused by adversarial resource block selection and vary in sophistication and efficiency. In particular, we consider "o…

Data poisoning is one of the most relevant security threats against machine learning and data-driven technologies. Since many applications rely on untrusted training data, an attacker can easily craft malicious samples and inject them into the training dataset to degrade the performance of machine learning models. As recent work has shown, such Denial-of-Service (DoS) data poisoning attacks are highly effective. To mitigate this threat, we propose a new approach of detecting DoS poisoned instances. In comparison to related work, we deviate from clustering and anomaly detection based approaches…
Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service of Service (DDoS) attacks are commonly used to disrupt network services. Attack techniques are always improving and due to the structure of the internet and properties of network protocols it is difficult to keep detection and mitigation techniques up to date. A lot of research has been conducted in this area which has demonstrated the difficulty of preventing DDoS attacks altogether, therefore the primary aim of most research is to maximize quality of service (QoS) for legitimate users. This survey paper aims to provide a clear summary…
