An equivalent circuit model for Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS) comprising anisotropic elements is presented. The periodic surface is initially simulated with an arbitrary azimuthal incidence angle and its surface impedance matrix is derived. The impedance matrix is subsequently rotated by an angle $φ^{rot}$ on the crystal axes $χ_1$, $χ_2$ thus nullifying its extra diagonal terms. The rotation angle $φ^{rot}$ is derived according to the spectral theorem by using the terms of the matrix initially extracted. The diagonal terms of the rotated matrix, that is, the impedances $Z_{χ_1}$ and $Z_{χ_2}$, are finally matched with simple LC networks. The circuit model representation of the anisotropic element can be used to analyse anisotropic FSSs rotated by a generic azimuth angle. The methodology provides a compact description of generic FSS elements with only five parameters: the lumped parameters of the LC network $L_{χ_1}$, $C_{χ_1}$, $L_{χ_2}$, $C_{χ_2}$ and the rotation angle $φ^{rot}$. The circuit model can take into account the presence of dielectric substrates close to the FSS or a variation of the FSS periodicity without additional computational efforts. The equivalent circuit model is finally applied to the design of two transmitting polarization converts based on anisotropic metasurfaces.
In this study, we numerically demonstrate how the response of recently reported circuit-based metasurfaces is characterized by their circuit parameters. These metasurfaces, which include a set of four diodes as a full wave rectifier, are capable of sensing different waves even at the same frequency in response to the incident waveform, or more specifically the pulse width. This study reveals the relationship between the electromagnetic response of such waveform-selective metasurfaces and the SPICE parameters of the diodes used. First, we show that reducing a parasitic capacitive component of t…
This paper presents the concept of spread-spectrum selective camouflaging based on time-modulated metasurface. The spectrum spreading is realized by switching the metasurface between the reflective states of a PEC mirror and a PMC mirror, using an array of microstrip patches connected to the ground via diode switches, according to a periodic pseudo-random noise sequence. As the spectrum spreading induces a drastic reduction of the power spectral density of the signal, the level of the scattered wave falls below the noise floor of the interrogating radar, and the object covered by the metasurfa…
In this work, we develop the gradient metasurface is constructed of a locally anisotropic resonant structure, comprising a steel cylinder with an elliptical rubber coating embedded in epoxy. The deflective angles of rubber ellipses in the locally anisotropic resonant unit provide a method of controlling the reflected phase. Phase shifts of the reflected wave can cover the 2pi range. With an appropriate design of the phase profiles along the acoustic metasurface, we can achieve anomalous reflection and Bessel beam. The locally anisotropic resonant units have significant potential for engineerin…
In recent years, metasurfaces composed of lumped circuit components, including nonlinear Schottky diodes, have been reported to be capable of sensing particular electromagnetic waves even at the same frequency depending on their waveforms, or more specifically, their pulse widths. In this study, we report analogous waveform-selective phenomena using only linear circuits and linear media. Although such linear metasurfaces are analytically and numerically demonstrated to exhibit variable absorption performance, it cannot strictly be categorized as waveform-selective absorption. It is due to the …
Metasurfaces with planar profile and wave front shaping capabilities would be ideally suitable to improve the performance of acoustic wave-based applications. It is significant that the general Snell's law provides a new approach to engineer the phase profile of reflected acoustic wave. Here, we present a new type of acoustic metasurface based on three-component composites which contain a steel ball coated with a thin elliptical layer of silicone rubber and embedded in epoxy. The acoustic metasurface with changeable radii of steel balls can realize the anomalous reflections, a planar acoustic …
We report a waveform-selective metasurface that operates at 2.4 GHz band, i.e. one of ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) bands. This structure gives us an additional degree of freedom to control electromagnetic waves and absorbs a particular waveform or pulse width of an incident wave at the same frequency band, while transmitting others. This unique capability is demonstrated using either ideal sinusoidal waves or Wi-Fi signals as a more practical waveform in wireless communications. Especially, this study shows how the waveform-selective metasurface interacts with realistic wireless co…
Programmable metasurfaces incorporated with tunable materials controlled by external stimuli can provide an unprecedented degree of freedom in dynamical wave manipulation in real-time. Beyond the scope of isotropic reconfigurable metasurfaces that only support unique tunable responses for excitation with a certain single-polarization, here, for the first time a new generation of ultrafast reprogrammable multi-functional anisotropic metasurface is reported to enable interchangeable missions independently for two orthogonal linearly polarized THz wavefront excitations. The reconfigurability of t…
In this study, we demonstrate simplified equivalent circuit models to effectively approximate responses of recently reported waveform-selective metasurfaces that distinguish different electromagnetic waves even at the same frequency depending on their waveforms or pulse widths. Compared to conventional equivalent circuit models that represent behaviors of ordinary metasurfaces in the "frequency" domain, the proposed models enable us to explain how waveform-selective metasurfaces respond in the "time" domain. Our approach well estimates not only time constants of waveform-selective metasurfaces…
Experimental validation of the diverse incident angle performance of a pulse-width-dependent antenna based on a waveform-selective metasurface in a reverberation chamber
Optically resonant high-index dielectric metasurfaces featuring Mie-type electric and magnetic resonances are usually fabricated by means of planar technologies, which limit the degrees of freedom in tunability and scalability of the fabricated systems. Therefore, we propose a complimentary post-processing technique based on ultrashort ($\leq$ 10 ps) laser pulses. The process involves thermal effects: crystallization and reshaping, while the heat is localized by a high-precision positioning of the focused laser beam. Moreover, for the first time, the resonant behavior of dielectric metasurface…
We report a dramatic enhancement of the lateral optical forces induced on electrically polarizable Rayleigh particles near hyperbolic and extremely anisotropic metasurfaces under simple plane wave illumination. Such enhancement is enabled by the interplay between the increased density of states provided by these structures and the out-of-plane polarization spin acquired by the particle. The resulting giant lateral forces appear over a broad frequency range and may open unprecedented venues for routing, trapping, and assembling nanoparticles.
We propose the optical trapping of Rayleigh particles using tailored anisotropic and hyperbolic metasurfaces illuminated with a linearly polarized Gaussian beam. This platform permits to engineer optical traps at the beam axis with a response governed by nonconservative and giant recoil forces coming from the directional excitation of ultra-confined surface plasmons during the light scattering process. Compared to optical traps set over bulk metals, the proposed traps are broadband in the sense that can be set with beams oscillating at any frequency within the wide range in which the metasurfa…
Recently, we proposed a metasurface design for chiral sensing that (i) results in enhanced chiroptical signals by more than two orders of magnitude for ultrathin, subwavelength, chiral samples over a uniform and accessible area, (ii) allows for complete measurements of the total chirality (magnitude and sign of both its real and imaginary part), and (iii) offers the possibility for a crucial signal reversal (excitation with reversed polarization) that enables chirality measurements in an absolute manner, i.e., without the need for sample removal. Our design is based on the anisotropic response…
A simple but efficient approach for the synthesis of transmission-type wideband polarization converters is presented. The proposed configuration comprises multilayer metasurfaces including resonant particles which are progressively rotated layer by layer. The progressive rotation of the particles allows for a polarization conversion over a large frequency band. The polarizing structure is efficiently designed and optimized through a transmission line model approach handling the cascade of anisotropic impedance layers and dielectrics. An optimized 8-layers design based on gradually rotated dipo…
We present metasurface-inspired maintenance-free IoT tags that can be characterised not only by frequency-domain profiles but also by time-domain profiles. In particular, time-domain characterisation is made possible by implementing the waveform-selective mechanisms of recently developed circuit-based metasurfaces that behave differently, even at the same frequency, in accordance with the pulse duration of the incident wave. Our designs are numerically and experimentally validated and potentially contribute to accommodating an increasing number of IoT tags within a single wireless network whil…
Although a rigorous theoretical ground on metasurfaces has been established in the recent years on the basis of the equivalence principle, the majority of metasurfaces for converting a propagating wave into a surface wave are developed in accordance with the so-called generalized Snell's law being a simple heuristic rule for performing wave transformations. Recently, for the first time, Tcvetkova et al. [Phys. Rev. B 97, 115447 (2018)] have rigorously studied this problem by means of a reflecting anisotropic metasurface, which is, unfortunately, difficult to realize, and no experimental result…
With their self-tuned time-varying responses, waveform-selective metasurfaces embedded with nonlinear electronics have shown fascinating applications, including distinguishing different electromagnetic waves depending on the pulse width. However, thus far they have only been realized with a spatially homogeneous scattering profile. Here, by modeling a metasurface as time-varying admittance sheets, we provide an analytical calculation method to predict the metasurface time-domain responses. This allows derivation of design specifications in the form of equivalent sheet admittance, which is usef…
Recent advances in condensed matter physics have shown that the valley degree of freedom of electrons in 2D materials with hexagonal symmetry, such as graphene, h-BN, and TMDs, can be efficiently exploited, leading to the emergent field of valleytronics, which offers unique opportunities for efficient data transfer, computing and storage. The ability to couple the valley degree of freedom of electrons with light can further expand the ways one manipulate this degree of freedom, thus envisioning a new class of solid-state-photonic interfaces and devices. Besides this expansion of control of val…
Upon using fundamental electromagnetic properties of metasurfaces we build a platform to classify reciprocal bianisotropic metasurfaces from typical experimental measurements and determine isotropic, anisotropic, bi-isotropic (chiral), and bianisotropic (so-called omega) properties. We provide experimental guidelines to identify each class by measuring macroscopic scattering parameters, i.e., reflection and transmission coefficients upon plane wave illumination with linear and/or circular polarization. We explicitly provide a recipe of what metasurface properties can and cannot be inferred by …
Metasurfaces with strongly anisotropic optical properties can support deep subwavelength-scale confined electromagnetic waves (polaritons) that promise opportunities for controlling light in photonic and optoelectronic applications. We develop a mid-infrared hyperbolic metasurface by nanostructuring a thin layer of hexagonal boron nitride supporting deep subwavelength-scale phonon polaritons that propagate with in-plane hyperbolic dispersion. By applying an infrared nanoimaging technique, we visualize the concave (anomalous) wavefronts of a diverging polariton beam, which represent a landmark …

We numerically demonstrate a new type of waveform-selective metasurface that senses the difference in incoming waveforms or pulse widths at the same frequency. Importantly, the proposed structure contains precise rectifier circuits that, compared to ordinary schottky diodes used within old types of structures, rectify induced electric charges at a markedly reduced input power level depending on several design parameters but mostly on the gain of operational amplifiers. As a result, a waveform-selective absorbing mechanism related to this turn-on voltage appears even with a limited signal stren…

Hyperbolic metasurfaces have gained significant attention due to their extraordinary electromagnetic properties to control propagating plane waves, but the excitation and propagation of the surface plasmon-polaritons at hyperbolic metasurfaces, called hyperbolic plasmons, have been experimentally observed just recently. However, the advantages of the hyperbolic plasmons, such as hybrid TE-TM polarization discussed below, are not yet fully revealed and analyzed. In this paper we focus on the numerical and experimental characterization of surface waves in the frequency range from 2 to 8 GHz supp…
In this paper, we propose a continuously tunable acoustic metasurface composed of identical anisotropic resonant units, each of which contains a rigid pedestal and a rotatable inclusion with space coiling-up structure. The metasurface can manipulate the reflected phase by adjusting the rotational angle of inclusion. The theoretical analysis shows that the polarization-dependent phase change can be induced by the even-order standing wave modes inside inclusion. By utilizing the rotatable inclusion, we design a tunable acoustic carpet cloaking device, which works with a wide range for incident a…
We demonstrate the broadband operation of a switchable terahertz quarter-wave plate achieved with an active metasurface employing vanadium dioxide. For this purpose, we utilize anisotropically deformed checkerboard structures, which present broadband characteristics compatible with deep modulation. Moreover, the metasurface is integrated with a current injection circuit to achieve state switching; this injection circuit can also be employed to monitor the electric state of vanadium dioxide. We estimate the Stokes parameters derived from the experimental transmission spectra of the fabricated m…
The selective excitation of localized surface wave modes remains a challenge in the design of both leaky-wave and bound-wave devices. In this Letter, we show how the truncation of a metasurface can play an important role in breaking the spatial inversion symmetry in the excitation of surface waves supported by the structure. This is done by combining a large anisotropy in the dispersion relation and the presence of an edge which also serves as a coupling mechanism between the plane wave excitation and the induced surface waves. By resorting to the exact solution of the scattering problem based…

We consider wave propagation along fluid-loaded structures which take the form of an elastic plate augmented by an array of resonators forming a metasurface, that is, a surface structured with sub-wavelength resonators. Such surfaces have had considerable recent success for the control of wave propagation in electromagnetism and acoustics, by combining the vision of sub-wavelength wave manipulation, with the design, fabrication and size advantages associated with surface excitation. We explore one aspect of recent interest in this field: graded metasurfaces, but within the context of fluid-loa…

Metasurfaces offer great potential to control near- and far-fields through engineering of optical properties of elementary cells or meta-atoms. Such perspective opens a route to efficient manipulation of the optical signals both at nanoscale and in photonics applications. In this paper we show that by using an effective surface conductivity tensor it is possible to unambigiously describe optical properties of an anisotropic metasurface in the far- and near-field regimes. We begin with retrieving the effective surface conductivity tensor from the comparative analysis of experimental and numeric…
Self-complementary metasurfaces have gained significant attention due to their unique frequency-independent transmission and reflection properties and the possibility of the polarization transformation of plane waves. In this paper, we focus on the near-field spectrum to investigate both theoretically and experimentally the properties of surface waves supported by anisotropic self-complementary metasurfaces. We show that as a consequence of the electromagnetic Babinet's duality, such structure is hyperbolic for any frequency. We reveal the polarization degree of freedom inherent to plane waves…
