Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is an essential part of computer vision research, especially in medical expert systems. Having a discriminative image descriptor with the least number of parameters for tuning is desirable in CBIR systems. In this paper, we introduce a new simple descriptor based on the histogram of local Radon projections. We also propose a very fast convolution-based local Radon estimator to overcome the slow process of Radon projections. We performed our experiments using pathology images (KimiaPath24) and lung CT patches and test our proposed solution for medical image processing. We achieved superior results compared with other histogram-based descriptors such as LBP and HoG as well as some pre-trained CNNs.

Radon transform and its inverse operation are important techniques in medical imaging tasks. Recently, there has been renewed interest in Radon transform for applications such as content-based medical image retrieval. However, all studies so far have used Radon transform as a global or quasi-global image descriptor by extracting projections of the whole image or large sub-images. This paper attempts to show that the dense sampling to generate the histogram of local Radon projections has a much higher discrimination capability than the global one. In this paper, we introduce Local Radon Descrip…
Content-based medical image retrieval can support diagnostic decisions by clinical experts. Examining similar images may provide clues to the expert to remove uncertainties in his/her final diagnosis. Beyond conventional feature descriptors, binary features in different ways have been recently proposed to encode the image content. A recent proposal is "Radon barcodes" that employ binarized Radon projections to tag/annotate medical images with content-based binary vectors, called barcodes. In this paper, MinMax Radon barcodes are introduced which are superior to "local thresholding" scheme sugg…
Using content-based binary codes to tag digital images has emerged as a promising retrieval technology. Recently, Radon barcodes (RBCs) have been introduced as a new binary descriptor for image search. RBCs are generated by binarization of Radon projections and by assembling them into a vector, namely the barcode. A simple local thresholding has been suggested for binarization. In this paper, we put forward the idea of "autoencoded Radon barcodes". Using images in a training dataset, we autoencode Radon projections to perform binarization on outputs of hidden layers. We employed the mini-batch…
In recent years, with the explosion of digital images on the Web, content-based retrieval has emerged as a significant research area. Shapes, textures, edges and segments may play a key role in describing the content of an image. Radon and Gabor transforms are both powerful techniques that have been widely studied to extract shape-texture-based information. The combined Radon-Gabor features may be more robust against scale/rotation variations, presence of noise, and illumination changes. The objective of this paper is to harness the potentials of both Gabor and Radon transforms in order to int…

For more than two decades, research has been performed on content-based image retrieval (CBIR). By combining Radon projections and the support vector machines (SVM), a content-based medical image retrieval method is presented in this work. The proposed approach employs the normalized Radon projections with corresponding image category labels to build an SVM classifier, and the Radon barcode database which encodes every image in a binary format is also generated simultaneously to tag all images. To retrieve similar images when a query image is given, Radon projections and the barcode of the que…

One of the challenges in Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is to reduce the semantic gaps between low-level features and high-level semantic concepts. In CBIR, the images are represented in the feature space and the performance of CBIR depends on the type of selected feature representation. Late fusion also known as visual words integration is applied to enhance the performance of image retrieval. The recent advances in image retrieval diverted the focus of research towards the use of binary descriptors as they are reported computationally efficient. In this paper, we aim to investigate the…

In this paper we present an extensive evaluation of visual descriptors for the content-based retrieval of remote sensing (RS) images. The evaluation includes global hand-crafted, local hand-crafted, and Convolutional Neural Network (CNNs) features coupled with four different Content-Based Image Retrieval schemes. We conducted all the experiments on two publicly available datasets: the 21-class UC Merced Land Use/Land Cover (LandUse) dataset and 19-class High-resolution Satellite Scene dataset (SceneSat). The content of RS images might be quite heterogeneous, ranging from images containing fine…
The recent advances brought by deep learning allowed to improve the performance in image retrieval tasks. Through the many convolutional layers, available in a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), it is possible to obtain a hierarchy of features from the evaluated image. At every step, the patches extracted are smaller than the previous levels and more representative. Following this idea, this paper introduces a new detector applied on the feature maps extracted from pre-trained CNN. Specifically, this approach lets to increase the number of features in order to increase the performance of the …
Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) in large medical image archives is a challenging and necessary task. Generally, different feature extraction methods are used to assign expressive and invariant features to each image such that the search for similar images comes down to feature classification and/or matching. The present work introduces a new image retrieval method for medical applications that employs a convolutional neural network (CNN) with recently introduced Radon barcodes. We combine neural codes for global classification with Radon barcodes for the final retrieval. We also examine i…

This paper describes a method for searching for common sets of descriptors between collections of images. The presented method operates on local interest keypoints, which are generated using the SURF algorithm. The use of a dictionary of descriptors allowed achieving good performance of the content-based image retrieval. The method can be used to initially determine a set of similar pairs of keypoints between images. For this purpose, we use a certain level of tolerance between values of descriptors, as values of feature descriptors are almost never equal but similar between different images. …

In this paper, we consider the problem of descriptors construction for the task of content-based image retrieval using deep neural networks. The idea of neural codes, based on fully connected layers activations, is extended by incorporating the information contained in convolutional layers. It is known that the total number of neurons in the convolutional part of the network is large and the majority of them have little influence on the final classification decision. Therefore, in the paper we propose a novel algorithm that allows us to extract the most significant neuron activations and utili…

The idea of Radon barcodes (RBC) has been introduced recently. In this paper, we propose a content-based image retrieval approach for big datasets based on Radon barcodes. Our method (Single Projection Radon Barcode, or SP-RBC) uses only a few Radon single projections for each image as global features that can serve as a basis for weak learners. This is our most important contribution in this work, which improves the results of the RBC considerably. As a matter of fact, only one projection of an image, as short as a single SURF feature vector, can already achieve acceptable results. Neverthele…
We investigate the problem of image retrieval based on visual queries when the latter comprise arbitrary regions-of-interest (ROI) rather than entire images. Our proposal is a compact image descriptor that combines the state-of-the-art in content-based descriptor extraction with a multi-level, Voronoi-based spatial partitioning of each dataset image. The proposed multi-level Voronoi-based encoding uses a spatial hierarchical K-means over interest-point locations, and computes a content-based descriptor over each cell. In recent years, advances in medical imaging have led to the emergence of massive databases, containing images from a diverse range of modalities. This has significantly heightened the need for automated annotation of the images on one side, and fast and memory-efficient content-based image retrieval systems on the other side. In this paper, a new texture descriptor based on the local neighborhood intensity difference is proposed for content based image retrieval (CBIR). For computation of texture features like Local Binary Pattern (LBP), the center pixel in a 3*3 window of an image is compared with all the remaining neighbors, one pixel at a time to generate a binary bit pattern. It ignores the effect of the adjacent neighbors of a particular pixel for its binary encoding and also for texture description. The proposed method is based on the concept that neighbors of a particular pixel hold a significant amount of t…
The objective of this work is set-based face recognition, i.e. to decide if two sets of images of a face are of the same person or not. Conventionally, the set-wise feature descriptor is computed as an average of the descriptors from individual face images within the set. In this paper, we design a neural network architecture that learns to aggregate based on both "visual" quality (resolution, illumination), and "content" quality (relative importance for discriminative classification). To this end, we propose a Multicolumn Network (MN) that takes a set of images (the number in the set can vary…

This paper proposes a new approach based on augmented naive Bayes for image classification. Initially, each image is cutting in a whole of blocks. For each block, we compute a vector of descriptors. Then, we propose to carry out a classification of the vectors of descriptors to build a vector of labels for each image. Finally, we propose three variants of Bayesian Networks such as Naive Bayesian Network (NB), Tree Augmented Naive Bayes (TAN) and Forest Augmented Naive Bayes (FAN) to classify the image using the vector of labels. The results showed a marked improvement over the FAN, NB and TAN.

Content-Based Image Retrieval based on local features is computationally expensive because of the complexity of both extraction and matching of local feature. On one hand, the cost for extracting, representing, and comparing local visual descriptors has been dramatically reduced by recently proposed binary local features. On the other hand, aggregation techniques provide a meaningful summarization of all the extracted feature of an image into a single descriptor, allowing us to speed up and scale up the image search. Only a few works have recently mixed together these two research directions, …

Feature detectors and descriptors have been successfully used for various computer vision tasks, such as video object tracking and content-based image retrieval. Many methods use image gradients in different stages of the detection-description pipeline to describe local image structures. Recently, some, or all, of these stages have been replaced by convolutional neural networks (CNNs), in order to increase their performance. A detector is defined as a selection problem, which makes it more challenging to implement as a CNN. They are therefore generally defined as regressors, converting input i…

The use of high-dimensional features has become a normal practice in many computer vision applications. The large dimension of these features is a limiting factor upon the number of data points which may be effectively stored and processed, however. Exploiting this extra information allows the development of encodings which, although compact, outperform the original high-dimensional features in terms of final cla…
