We investigate dynamics of two-dimensional chiral solitons of semi-vortex (SV) and mixed-mode (MM) types in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with the Manakov nonlinearity, loaded in a dual-core (double-layer) trap. The system supports two novel manifestations of Josephson phenomenology: one in the form of persistent oscillations between SVs or MMs with opposite chiralities in the two cores, and another one demonstrating robust periodic switching (identity oscillations) between SV in one core and MM in the other, provided that the strength of the inter-core coupling exceeds a threshold value. Below the threshold, the system creates composite states, which are asymmetric with respect to the two cores, or suffer the collapse. Robustness of the chirality and identity oscillations against deviations from the Manakov nonlinearity is investigated too. These dynamical regimes are possible only in the nonlinear system. In the linear one, exact stationary and dynamical solutions for SVs and MMs of the Bessel type are found. They sustain Josephson self-oscillations in different modes, with no interconversion between them.
We study the dynamics of matter waves in an effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential. We consider in particular the case when one of the double wells confines excited states. Similarly to the known ground state oscillations, the states can tunnel between the wells experiencing the physics known for electrons in a Josephson junction, or be self-trapped. As the existence of dark solitons in a harmonic trap are continuations of such non-ground state excitations, one can view the Josephson-like oscillations as tunnelings of dark solitons. Numerical existence …
The existence and dynamics of solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and attractive two-body interactions are described for two coupled atomic pseudo-spin components with slowly and rapidly varying time-dependent Raman frequency. By varying the Raman frequency linearly in time, it was shown that ordinary nonlinear Schrödinger-type bright solitons can be converted to striped bright solitons and vice versa. The internal Josephson oscillations between atom-number of the coupled soliton components, and the corresponding center-of-mass motio…
Dark solitons in superfluid Bose gases decay through the snake instability mechanism, unless they are strongly confined. Recent experiments in superfluid Fermi gases have also interpreted soliton decay via this mechanism. However, we show using both an effective field numerical simulation and a perturbative analysis that there is a qualitative difference between soliton decay in the BEC- and BCS-regimes. On the BEC-side of the interaction domain, the characteristic snaking deformations are induced by fluctuations of the amplitude of the order parameter, while on the BCS-side, fluctuations of t…
Stationary solitary waves are studied in an array of $M$ linearly-coupled one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) by means of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Solitary wave solutions with the character of overlapping dark solitons, Josephson vortex - antivortex arrays, and arrays of half-dark solitons are constructed for $M>2$ from known solutions for two coupled BECs. Additional solutions resembling vortex dipoles and rarefaction pulses are found numerically. Stability analysis of the solitary waves reveals that overlapping dark solitons can become unstable and susceptible to decay int…
We propose that a weakly-coupled nonlinear dielectric waveguide -- surface-plasmon system can be formulated as a new type of Josephson junction. Such a system can be realized along a metal - dielectric interface where the dielectric medium hosts a nonlinear waveguide (e.g. fiber) for soliton propagation. We demonstrate that the system is in close analogy to the bosonic Josephson-Junction (BJJ) of atomic condensates at very low temperatures, yet exhibits different dynamical features. In particular, the inherently dynamic coupling parameter between soliton and surface-plasmon generates self-trap…
The phenomena of AC oscillation generated by a DC drive, such as the famous Josephson AC effect in superconductors and Bloch oscillation in solid physics, are of great interest in physics. Here we report another example of such counter-intuitive phenomenon that a spin soliton in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is driven by a constant force: The initially static spin soliton first moves in a direction opposite to the force and then changes direction, showing an extraordinary AC oscillation in a long term. In sharp contrast to the Josephson AC effect and Bloch oscillation, we find that …
We demonstrate the possibility to build stable Josephson $π$-junction stripes with exciton-polariton condensates. The stability of the $π$-junction between arbitrary long polariton stripes is achieved at low pumping by balancing the snaking instability with counter-propagating flows towards the junction. Not dissimilar from a dark soliton, the instability becomes relevant at high pumping leading to formation of vortex dipoles. The resulting structures can be stabilised to produce static lattices of Josephson vortices in straight and ring geometries. Our results build towards realization of qua…
Two effectively one-dimensional parallel coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of external potentials are studied. The system is modelled by linearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In particular, grey-soliton-like solutions representing analogues of superconducting Josephson fluxons as well as coupled dark solitons are discussed. Theoretical approximations based on variational formulations are derived. It is found that the presence of a magnetic trap can destabilize the fluxon analogues. However, stabilization is possible by controlling the effective linear coupling between th…
We numerically investigate the soliton tunnelling process in double-well potential trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. Comparing with the usual low energy few particle tunnelling process, we find that the soliton tunnelling leads to massive particle transport between two wells. The {population imbalance} between two wells is not evolving sinusoidally with the time as the Josephson plasma oscillation, but shows a higher density contrast square-wave pattern due to the reflections at the trapping potential boundaries. Such unusual behavior clearly demonstrates the topologically stable, localized na…
Phase engineering techniques are used to control the dynamics of long-bosonic-Josephson-junction arrays built by linearly coupling Bose-Einstein condensates. Just at the middle point of the underlying discrete energy band of the system, unlocked-relative-phase states are shown to be stationary along with the locked-relative-phase Bloch waves. In finite, experimentally-feasible systems, such states find ranges of dynamical stability that depend on the ratio of coupling to interaction energy. The same ratio determines different decay regimes, which include the recurrence of staggered-soliton tra…
Quantum fluids of light are an emerging platform for energy efficient signal processing, ultra-sensitive interferometry and quantum simulators at elevated temperatures. Here we demonstrate the optical control of the topological excitations induced in a large polariton condensate, realising the bosonic analog of a long Josephson junction and reporting the first observation of bosonic Josephson vortices. When a phase difference is imposed at the boundaries of the condensate, two extended regions become separated by a sharp $π$-slippage of the phase and a solitonic depletion of the density, formi…
We study the dynamics of one-dimensional bosons trapped in a box potential, in the presence of a barrier creating a tunable weak-link, thus realizing a one dimensional Bose Josephson junction. By varying the initial population imbalance and the barrier height we evidence different dynamical regimes. In particular we show that at large barriers a two mode model captures accurately the dynamics, while for low barriers the dynamics involves dispersive shock waves and solitons. We study a quench protocol that can be readily implemented in experiments and show that self-trapping resonances can occu…
We consider theoretically one-dimensional polariton ring accounting for both longitudinal-transverse (TE-TM) and Zeeman splitting of spinor polariton states and spin dependent polariton-polariton interactions. We present the novel class of solutions in the form of the localized defects rotating with constant angular velocity and analyze their properties for realistic values of the parameters of the system. We show that the effects of the geometric phase arising from the interplay between external magnetic field and TE-TM splitting introduce chirality in the system and make solitons propagating…
We consider a binary repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap in one spatial dimension and investigate particular solutions consisting of two dark-bright (DB) solitons. There are two different stationary solutions characterized by the phase difference in the bright component, in-phase and out-of-phase states. We show that above a critical particle number in the bright component, a symmetry breaking bifurcation of the pitchfork type occurs that leads to a new asymmetric solution whereas the parental branch, i.e., the out-of-phase state becomes unstable. These three different states…
Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattices with constituent sublattices having incommensurate periods is considered. Using the rational approximations for the incommensurate periods, we show that below the mobility edge the localized states are distributed nearly homogeneously in the space and explore the versatility of such potentials. We show that superposition of symmetric and anti-symmetric localized can be used to simulate various physical dynamical regimes, known to occur in double-well and multi-well traps. As examples, we obtain an alternative real…
We investigate the dynamics of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate which is governed by an optically induced non-Abelian gauge potential. Using a ring shaped trap to confine the atoms and a hydrodynamic ansatz, nonlinear Josephson type equations are found to describe the system. The degenerate eigenstates which show rotation are solved exactly. We consider a homogenous filled ring and observe population dynamics between the two quasi-spin components but also space dependent Josephson oscillations. Stable mass currents can be observed which are induced by the constant non-Abelian effective magnet…
We analyse the formation and the dynamics of quantum turbulence in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with a Josephson junction barrier modelled using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We show that a sufficiently high initial superfluid density imbalance leads to randomisation of the dynamics and generation of turbulence, namely, the formation of a quasi-1D dispersive shock consisting of a train of grey solitons that eventually breakup into chains of distinct quantised vortices of alternating vorticity followed by random turbulent flow. The Josephson junction barrier allows us to create t…
We analyze the dynamics of both population and spin densities, emerging from the spatial overlap between two distinct polar bright solitons in Spin-1 Spinor Condensates. The dynamics of overlapping solitons in scalar condensates exhibits soliton fusion, atomic switching from one soliton to another and repulsive dynamics depending on the extent of overlap and the relative phase between the solitons. The scalar case also helps us understand the dynamics of the vector solitons. In the spinor case, non-trivial dynamics emerge in spatial and spin degrees of freedom. In the absence of spin changing …
