We report observations of the cyanide anion, CN, in the disk around TW~Hya covering the $N=1-0$, $N=2-1$ and $N=3-2$ transitions. Using line stacking techniques, 24 hyperfine transitions are detected out of the 30 within the observed frequency ranges. Exploiting the super-spectral resolution from the line stacking method reveals the splitting of hyperfine components previously unresolved by laboratory spectroscopy. All transitions display a similar emission morphology, characterized by an azimuthally symmetric ring, peaking at $\approx 45$~au (0.75"), and a diffuse outer tail extending out to the disk edge at $\approx 200$~au. Excitation analyses assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) yield excitation temperatures in excess of the derived kinetic temperatures based on the local line widths for all fine structure groups, suggesting assumptions of LTE are invalid. Using the 0D radiative transfer code RADEX, we demonstrate that such non-LTE effects may be present when the local H$_2$ density drops to $10^{7}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$ and below. Comparison with models of TW~Hya find similar densities at elevated regions in the disk, typically $z \, / \, r \gtrsim 0.2$, consistent with model predictions where CN is formed via vibrationally excited H$_2$ in the disk atmospheric layers where UV irradiation is less attenuated.
Understanding the physical structure of the planet formation environment, the protoplanetary disk, is essential for the interpretation of high resolution observations of the dust and future observations of the magnetic field structure. Observations of multiple transitions of molecular species offers a unique view of the underlying physical structure through excitation analyses. Here we describe a new method to extract high-resolution spectra from low-resolution observations, then provide two case studies of how molecular excitation analyses were used to constrain the physical structure in TW H…
We report the detection and investigate the properties of high-excitation lambda-doubling line emission of hydroxyl (OH) detected towards three asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (W Hya, R Dor, and IK Tau) using ALMA. The OH lines are produced very close to the central stars and seem optically thin and with no maser effect. We analyse the molecular excitation using population diagrams and find rotational temperatures of $\sim 2500$ K and column densities of $\sim 10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ for both W Hya and R Dor. For W Hya, we observe emission from vibrationally excited H2O arising from the same re…
Molecular D/H ratios are frequently used to probe the chemical past of Solar System volatiles. Yet it is unclear which parts of the Solar Nebula hosted an active deuterium fractionation chemistry. To address this question, we present 0".2-0".4 ALMA observations of DCO+ and DCN 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 towards the nearby protoplanetary disk around TW Hya, taken as part of the TW Hya Rosetta Stone project, augmented with archival data. DCO+ is characterized by an excitation temperature of ~40 K across the 70 au radius pebble disk, indicative of emission from a warm, elevated molecular layer. Tentatively…
Analyzing multiband observations of dust continuum emission is one of the useful tools to constrain dust properties which help us to understand the physical properties of the disks. We perform the synthetic ALMA multiband analysis to find the best ALMA band set for constraining the dust properties of the TW Hya protoplanetary disk. We find that the Band [10,6,3] set is the best set among the possible combinations of ALMA Band [3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10]. We also find two conditions for the good ALMA band sets providing narrow constraint ranges on dust properties; (1) Band 9 or 10 is included in the ban…
Formaldehyde (H$_2$CO) is an important precursor to organics like methanol (CH$_3$OH). It is important to understand the conditions that produce H$_2$CO and prebiotic molecules during star and planet formation. H$_2$CO possesses both gas-phase and solid-state formation pathways, involving either UV-produced radical precursors or CO ice and cold ($\lesssim 20$ K) dust grains. To understand which pathway dominates, gaseous H$_2$CO's ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) has been used as a probe, with a value of 3 indicating "warm" conditions and $<3$ linked to cold formation in the solid-state. We present s…
Contemporaneous high-angular-resolution imaging of the AGB star W Hya in vibrationally excited H2O lines and visible polarized light with ALMA and VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL
Connecting the composition of planet-forming disks with that of gas giant exoplanet atmospheres, in particular through C/O ratios, is one of the key goals of disk chemistry. Small hydrocarbons like $\rm C_2H$ and $\rm C_3H_2$ have been identified as tracers of C/O, as they form abundantly under high C/O conditions. We present resolved $\rm C_3H_2$ observations from the TW Hya Rosetta Stone Project, a program designed to map the chemistry of common molecules at $15-20$ au resolution in the TW Hya disk. Augmented by archival data, these observations comprise the most extensive multi-line set for…
We report the first detection of the molecule cyanomethyl, CH$_2$CN, in a protoplanetary disk. Until now, CH$_2$CN had only been observed at earlier evolutionary stages, in the giant molecular clouds TMC-1 and Sgr 2, and the prestellar core L1544. We detect six transitions of ortho-CH$_2$CN towards the disk around nearby T Tauri star TW Hya. An excitation analysis reveals that the disk-averaged column density, $N$, for ortho-CH$_2$CN is $(6.3\pm 0.5)\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is rescaled to reflect a 3:1 ortho-para ratio, resulting in a total column density, $N_{\rm tot}$, of $(8.4\pm 0.7…

Cometary studies suggest that the organic composition of the early Solar Nebula was rich in complex nitrile species such a CH$_3$CN. Recent ALMA detections in protoplanetary disks suggest that these species may be common during planet and comet formation, but connecting gas phase measurements to cometary abundances first requires constraints on formation chemistry and distributions of these species. We present here the detection of seven spatially resolved transitions of CH$_3$CN in the protoplanetary disk around the T-Tauri star TW Hya. Using a rotational diagram analysis we find a disk-avera…
