The new XENON1T observation of dark matter-electron scattering cross-section, along with further constraining many popular dark matter models, has indicated the possibility of new physics at a low energy. We point out that this new observation also significantly constrain the neutrino non-standard interactions (NSI). We consider the NSI arising from a kinetically mixed $Z'$ with renormalisable and dipole-like interactions with the active and light sterile neutrinos. In passing, we also address the possibility of explaining the XENON1T excess around electron recoil energy ~ 2 keV in presence of such NSI.
We examine constraints on a simple neutrino model in which there are three massless and three massive Dirac neutrinos and in which the left handed neutrinos are linear combinations of doublet and singlet neutrinos. We examine constraints from direct decays into heavy neutrinos, indirect effects on electroweak parameters, and flavor changing processes. We combine these constraints to examine the allowed mass range for the heavy neutrinos of each of the three generations.
Detection of 5 events by the Liquid Scintillation Detector (LSD) on February, 23, 1987 was recently interpreted as a detection of the electron neutrino flux from the first stage of the two-stage Supernova collapse. We show that, if neutrino mass hierarchy is normal, such interpretation excludes values of neutrino mixing angle θ_{13} larger than 3\cdot 10^{-2}, independently of the particular Supernova collapse model. Also constraints on the original fluxes of neutrinos and antineutrinos of different flavours are obtained.
By combining the inputs from the neutrinoless double beta decay and the fits of cosmological models of dark matter with solar and atmospheric neutrino data, we obtain constraints on two of the mixing angles of Majorana neutrinos, which become stronger when coupled with the reactor neutrino data. These constraints are strong enough to rule out Majorana neutrinos if the small angle solution of solar neutrino puzzle is borne out.
The splitting of neutrinos, a viable reaction for superluminal neutrinos, is shown to have phenomenologically relevant consequences if one accepts the recent OPERA results for the velocity of neutrinos. Neutrino splitting can be used to put strong constraints on the energy dependence of the velocity of propagation of neutrinos in a general analysis of modifications of relativistic kinematics and to propose observable effects due to the departures from special relativity in neutrino physics.
It is shown that, in the framework of the scheme with three-neutrino mixing and a mass hierarchy, the results of neutrino oscillation experiments imply an upper bound of about 10^{-2} eV for the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double-beta decay. The schemes with four massive neutrinos are also briefly discussed.
We revisit the pair creation constraint on superluminal neutrinos considered by Cohen and Glashow in order to clarify which types of superluminal models are constrained. We show that a model in which the superluminal neutrino is effectively light-like can evade the Cohen-Glashow constraint.
We discuss constraints on three flavor neutrino mixings from the accelerator and reactor experiments, the Kamiokande multi-GeV data, and the solar neutrino observations. The LSND result is excluded at 90\%CL by the constraints imposed by all the data of reactor and accelerator experiments and the Kamiokande multi-GeV data if the mass scale required for the solution to the solar neutrino problem is hierarchically small. The region of a set of the effective two-flavor mixing parameters ($Δm^2$, $\sin^22θ$) is given for the channel $ν_μ\rightarrowν_e$ which is allowed at 90\%CL by the multi-GeV K…
Assuming positive observation of neutrinoless double bata decay together with the CHOOZ reactor bound, we derive constraints imposed on neutrino mixing parameters, the solar mixing angle θ_{12} and the observable mass parameter < m >_β in single beta decay experiments. We show that 0.05 eV < < m >_β < 2 eV at the best fit parameters of the LMA MSW solar neutrino solution by requiring the range of the parameter < m >_{ββ} deduced from recently announced double beta decay events at 95 % CL with +/- 50 % uncertainty of nuclear matrix elements.
In this article I review the constraints on neutrino mass and mixing coming from type-II supernovae. The bounds obtained on these parameters from shock reheating, r-process nucleosynthesis and from SN1987A are discussed. Given the current constraints on neutrino mass and mixing the effect of oscillations of neutrinos from a nearby supernova explosion in future detectors will also be discussed.
It is shown that in the two schemes with four massive neutrinos which are compatible with the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments, the probabilities of nu_e disappearance and nu_mu->nu_e appearance in long-baseline experiments are severely constrained.
We have studied the constraints imposed by the results of neutrino oscillation experiments on the effective Majorana mass |<m>| that characterizes the contribution of Majorana neutrino masses to the matrix element of neutrinoless double-beta decay. We have shown that in a general scheme with three Majorana neutrinos and a hierarchy of neutrino masses (which can be explained by the see-saw mechanism), the results of neutrino oscillation experiments imply rather strong constraints on the parameter |<m>|. From the results of the first reactor long-baseline experiment CHOOZ and the Bugey experimen…
Two-neutrino oscillations in vacuum are studied as a possible solution of the solar neutrino problem. New constraints on the parameter sn2, characterizing the mixing of the electron neutrino with another active or sterile neutrino, as well as on the mass--squared difference, dm2, of their massive neutrino components, are derived using the latest results from the four solar neutrino experiments. Oscillations into a sterile neutrino are ruled out at 99 % C.L. by the observed mean event rates even if one includes the uncertainties of the standard solar model predictions in the analysis.
We show that, in the framework of a general model with mixing of three Majorana neutrinos and a neutrino mass hierarchy, the results of the Bugey and Krasnoyarsk reactor neutrino oscillation experiments imply strong limitations for the effective Majorana mass |<m>| that characterizes the amplitude of neutrinoless double beta decay. We obtain further limitations on |<m>| from the data of the atmospheric neutrino experiments. We discuss the possible implications of the results of the future long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments for neutrinoless double beta decay.
A search for the parameter constraint in the three-parameter empirical mass formula proposed recently for active neutrinos is described. Without any parameter constraint the formula is a formal transformation of three free parameters into three neutrino masses or vice versa, giving no numerical predictions for the masses. But, this is a very special transformation, providing some specific suggestions as to its parameters, when it is confronted with the present, unfortunately incomplete, experimental data. If the parameters become constrainted, then there appear some numerical predictions for t…
We present new constraints on the mass $m_{ν_τ}$ of the tau neutrino and its mixing with a fourth generation neutrino. From an analysis of the partial widths of tau lepton decays we obtain the following bounds at the 90% confidence level: $m_{ν_τ} < 32$ MeV and $\sin^2θ< 0.007$, where $θ$ describes the Cabibbo-like mixing of the third and fourth generation neutrinos.
We assume that neutrinoless double beta decay is caused by the exchange of three light Majorana neutrinos. Under this assumption, we obtain, by the method of perturbation, the equation representing the isocontour of effective Majorana mass which is the function of two CP-violating Majorana phases. The equation representing the isocontour (constraint equation between two Majorana phases) is expressed analytically by six parameters: two lepton mixing angles, two kinds of neutrino mass squared differences, lightest neutrino mass scale, and the effective Majorana mass. We discuss how the constrain…
The rise-up in boron neutrino spectrum at low energies has been studied within the framework of `pure LMA' scenario. Indirect bounds on the spectral `upturn' have been obtained from the available solar neutrino data. These bounds have been used to demonstrate the efficacy of the precision measurements of the `upturn' for further constraining the neutrino parameter space allowed by SNO salt phase data. The sterile neutrino flux has been constrained in the light of the recent 766.3 Ty KamLAND spectral data.
Exotic explanations are considered for atmospheric neutrino observations. Our analysis includes matter effects and the mixing of all three neutrinos under the simplifying assumption of only one relevant mixing scale. Constraints from accelerator, reactor and solar neutrinos are included. We find that the proposed mixing mechanisms based on violations of Lorentz invariance or on violations of the equivalence principle cannot explain the recent observations of atmospheric neutrino mixing. However the data still allow a wide range of energy dependences for the vacuum mixing scale, and also allow …
From the analyses of the recent data of neutrino oscillation experiments (especially the CHOOZ and the Super KAMIOKANDE experiments), we discuss how these data affect the neutrinoless double beta decay ($(ββ)_{0ν}$) rate and vice versa assuming that neutrinos are Majorana particles. For the case that $m_1 \sim m_2 \ll m_3$ ($m_i$ are neutrino masses), we obtain, from the data of the CHOOZ and Super KAMIOKANDE, $0.28 \le \sin^2θ_{23} \le 0.76$ and $\sin^2θ_{13} \le 0.05$. Combining the latter constraint with the analysis of the "averaged" neutrino mass (< m_ν>) appeared in $(ββ)_{0ν}$, we find …
We consider active-sterile neutrino conversions in a supernova in the presence of random magnetic field domains. For large enough fields the magnetization of the medium may enhance the active to sterile neutrino conversion rates. Neglecting neutrino transition magnetic moments we show that for KeV neutrino mass squared differences these limits may overcome those that would apply in the isotropic case.
We study the constraints on masses and mixing angles imposed by the measured $Z^0$ invisible width, in a model in which a singlet right-handed neutrino mixes with all the Standard Model neutrinos.
We examine the constraints on non-radiative decay of neutrinos from the observations of solar neutrino experiments. The standard oscillation hypothesis among three neutrinos solves the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems. Decay of a massive neutrino mixed with the electron neutrino results in the depletion of the solar neutrino flux. We introduce neutrino decay in the oscillation hypothesis and demand that decay does not spoil the successful explanation of solar and atmospheric observations. We obtain a lower bound on the ratio of the lifetime over the mass of $ν_2$, $(τ_2/m_2) > 22.7 (\sr…
It is shown that at least four massive neutrinos are needed in order to accommodate the evidences in favor of neutrino oscillations found in solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments and in the LSND experiment. Among all four-neutrino schemes, only two are compatible with the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments. These two schemes have a mass spectrum composed of two pairs of neutrinos with close masses separated by the "LSND gap" of the order of 1 eV.
We estimate constraints on the existence of a heavy, mostly sterile neutrino with mass between 10 eV and 1 TeV. We improve upon previous analyses by performing a global combination and expanding the experimental inputs to simultaneously include tests for lepton universality, lepton-flavor-violating processes, electroweak precision data, dipole moments, and neutrinoless double beta decay. Assuming the heavy neutrino and its decay products are invisible to detection, we further include, in a self-consistent manner, constraints from direct kinematic searches, the kinematics of muon decay, cosmolo…
The lepton number violating interactions generated by the light Majorana neutrinos can erase the primordial baryon asymmetry of the universe during the electroweak phase transition. The Majorana masses of the left-handed neutrinos are constrained to avoid this problem. These constraints do not depend on the $(B-L)$ symmetry breaking mechanism.
Upper bounds on the CP asymmetry relevant for leptogenesis are reexamined and found weaker than in previous literature, both for hierarchical and for quasi-degenerate right-handed neutrinos. Successful leptogenesis implies the usual lower bound on right-handed neutrino masses, and an upper bound on left-handed neutrino masses (which we obtain to be 0.15eV at 3sigma) only if right-handed neutrinos are assumed to be much more hierarchical than left-handed neutrinos. Otherwise both bounds can be considerably relaxed. The constraint on light neutrino masses varies assuming different interpretation…
We consider the spin polarization of leptons produced in neutrino and antineutrino nucleon deep inelastic scattering, via charged currents, and we study the positivity constraints on the spin components in a model independent way. These results are very important, in particular in the case of $τ^{\pm}$ leptons, because the polarization information is crucial in all future neutrino oscillation experiments.
We present an updated analysis of the current solar neutrino data in terms of three-flavor oscillations, including the additional constraints coming from terrestrial neutrino oscillation searches at the CHOOZ (reactor), Super-Kamiokande (atmospheric), and KEK-to-Kamioka (accelerator) experiments. The best fit is reached for the subcase of two-family mixing, and the additional admixture with the third neutrino is severely limited. We discuss the relevant features of the globally allowed regions in the oscillation parameter space, as well as their impact on the amplitude of possible CP-violation…
Allowed regions on the m_l - cos{2θ_{12}} plane are extracted from results of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. It is shown that 0.05 eV (0 eV) < m_l < 1.85 eV is obtained for the normal (inverted) hierarchy by using the LMA best fit parameters and the 0νββresult announced late last year, which is 0.05 eV < <m>_ββ< 0.84 eV with +/- 50% uncertainty of the nuclear matrix elements.
Sterile neutrino models with new gauge interactions in the sterile sector are phenomenologically interesting since they can lead to novel effects in neutrino oscillation experiments, in cosmology and in dark matter detectors, possibly even explaining some of the observed anomalies in these experiments. Here, we use data from neutrino oscillation experiments, in particular from MiniBooNE, MINOS and solar neutrino experiments, to constrain such models. We focus in particular on the case where the sterile sector gauge boson $A'$ couples also to Standard Model particles (for instance to the baryon…
A simple model of the neutrino mixing is considered, which contains only one right-handed neutrino field, coupled via the mass term to the three usual left-handed fields. This is a simplest model that allows for three-flavour neutrino oscillations. The existing experimental limits on the neutrino oscillations are used to obtain constraints on the two free mixing parameters of the model. A specific sum rule relating the oscillation probabilities of different flavours is derived.
We analyse the mass matrix of the three light neutrinos in the basis where the charged-lepton mass matrix is diagonal and discuss constraints on its elements for the Majorana and the Dirac case.
We examine the constraints from the recent HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW double beta decay experiment. It leads us to the almost degenerate or inverse hierarchy neutrino mass scenario. In this scenario, we obtain possible upper bounds for the Majorana CP violating phase in the lepton sector by incorporating the data from the neutrino oscillation, the single beta decay experiments, and from the astrophysical observation. We also predict the neutrino mass that may be measurable in the future beta decay experiments.
Sensitive tests of Lorentz invariance can emerge from the study of neutrino oscillations, particularly for atmospheric neutrinos where the effect is conveniently near-maximal and has been observed over a wide range of energies. We assume these oscillations to be described in terms of two neutrinos with different masses and (possibly) different maximal attainable velocities (MAVs). It suffices to examine limiting cases in which neutrino velocity eigenstates coincide with either their mass or flavor eigenstates. We display the modified mu to tau neutrino transition probability for each case. Dat…
The use of the vacuum lepton pair production process ($ν\to νe^- e^+ $), a viable reaction for superluminal neutrinos, to put constraints on Lorentz violations requires a dynamical framework. Different choices of dynamical matrix elements and modified dispersion relations for neutrinos, leading to numerical factors differing by one order of magnitude in the results for the pair production decay width, are used to show the uncertainties on these constraints.
We investigate the possibility of a fourth sequential generation in the lepton sector. Assuming neutrinos to be Majorana particles and starting from a recent - albeit weak - evidence for a non-zero admixture of a fourth generation neutrino from fits to weak lepton and meson decays we discuss constraints from neutrinoless double beta decay, radiative lepton decay and like-sign di-lepton production at hadron colliders.
Phenomenology of possible neutrino millicharge in terrestrial and astrophysical settings is discussed. Two new limits on the millicharge from terrestrial experiments and astrophysics are reported.
Anomalies in several short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments suggest the possible existence of sterile neutrinos at about eV scale having appreciable mixing with the already known three neutrinos. We find that if such a light sterile neutrino exists, through a combined study of the leptonic decays of $μ^-$, $τ^-$, $π^-$ and $K^-$, some semi-leptonic decays of $τ^-$ and the invisible decay width of the $Z$ boson, it is possible to constrain the relevant mixing matrix elements. Furthermore, we compare the constraints, derived by using the method presented here, with the experimental resu…
We study generalized neutrino interactions (GNI) for several neutrino processes, including neutrinos from electron-positron collisions, neutrino-electron scattering, and neutrino deep inelastic scattering. We constrain scalar, pseudoscalar, and tensor new physics effective couplings, based on the standard model effective field theory at low energies. We have performed a global analysis for the different effective couplings. We also present the different individual constraints for each effective parameter (scalar, pseudoscalar, and tensor). Being a global analysis, we show robust results for th…
The sensitivity of the atmospheric neutrino experiments to the non-standard flavor-dependent interaction in neutrino propagation is studied under the assumption that the only nonvanishing components of the non-standard matter effect are the electron and tau neutrino components $ε_{ee}$, $ε_{eτ}$, $ε_{ττ}$ and that the tau-tau component satisfies the constraint $ε_{ττ}=|ε_{eτ}|^2/(1+ε_{ee})$ which is suggested from the high energy behavior for atmospheric neutrino data.
We consider a general symmetric $(3\times 3)$ mass matrix for three generations of neutrinos. Imposing the constraints, from the atmospheric neutrino and solar neutrino anomalies as well as from the CHOOZ experiment, on the mass squared differences and on the mixing angles, we identify the ranges of allowed inputs for the 6 matrix elements. We apply our results to Majorana left-handed neutrino masses generated at tree level and through fermion--sfermion loop diagrams in the MSSM with R-parity violation. The present experimental results on neutrinos from laboratories, cosmology and astrophysics…
The bounds on neutrino masses and mixing that follows from the data on light element abundances, large scale structure formation, and angular fluctuations of cosmic microwave background radiation are analyzed. The role of neutrino oscillations in BBN and the bounds on cosmological lepton asymmetry are discussed.
If the neutrino mass is non-zero, as hinted by several experiments, then R-parity-violating supersymmetric Yukawa couplings can drive a heavy neutrino decay into lighter states. The heavy neutrino may either decay radiatively into a lighter neutrino, or it may decay into three light neutrinos through a Z-mediated penguin. For a given mass of the decaying neutrino, we calculate its lifetime for the various modes, each mode requiring certain pairs of R-parity-violating couplings be non-zero. We then check whether the calculated lifetimes fall in zones allowed or excluded by cosmological requirem…
In the supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, neutrino masses and leptogenesis requires existence of new particles. We point out that if these particles with lepton number violating interactions have standard model gauge interactions, then they may not be created after reheating because of the gravitino problem. This will rule out all existing models of neutrino masses and leptogenesis, except the one with right-handed singlet neutrinos.
Observations of atmospheric neutrinos are usually analyzed using the simplifying approximation that either \(ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τ\) or \(ν_e \leftrightarrow ν_μ\) two-flavor mixing is relevant. Here we instead consider the data using the simplifying approximation that only one neutrino mass scale is relevant. This approximation is the minimal three-flavor notation that includes the two relevant two-flavor approximations. The constraints in the parameter space orthogonal to the usual, two-flavor analyses are studied.
We discuss the possibility of constraining or discovering the non-standard neutrino physics beyond the standard model with future long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Among very many possible experimental set up we discuss neutrino factory and T2KK, in which two detector setting may be useful to achieve the goal. In particular, neutrino factory with two detectors at baselines of 3000 km and 7000 km have a great sensitivity to non-standard interaction (NSI) and solve the $θ_{13}$-NSI confusion problem.
In the framework of a two Higgs doublet model type I and type II, we calculate limits on neutrino masses for the different types of neutrinos, by using the experimental bounds on their magnetic dipole moments. This is carried out by analyzing diagrams of Cherenkov neutrino decays with a charged Higgs into the loop, coming from the two Higgs doublet model (2HDM). Such constraints are translated into allowed regions in the free parameters of the models, for each neutrino flavor. The analysis was performed by sweeping the charged Higgs mass between (100-900)GeV and taking into account the experim…
The possibility of flavor transitions into sterile neutrinos (accompanying the dominant LMA transitions) in the solar boron neutrino flux has been examined in a scenario proposed by Hollanda and Smirnov to overcome some generic problems of the pure LMA scenario. It is found that the most recent SNO salt phase solar neutrino data and the KamLAND 766.3 Ty spectral data, allow for a significant sterile presence in the solar boron neutrino flux reaching the earth.
We review the status of the solutions to neutrino anomalies by flavor-changing as well as flavor-diagonal neutrino interactions. While it is difficult to explain the atmospheric neutrino data the solar neutrino data can be well accounted for by the massless neutrino oscillation induced by such non-standard neutrino interactions. We also discuss the possibility to test such kind of interactions by the future neutrino oscillation experiments at neutrino factories.
We consider long-baseline neutrino oscillations in the framework of two schemes with mixing of four massive neutrinos which can accommodate all the existing indications in favour of neutrino mixing. Within these schemes, we derive bounds on the oscillation probabilities and the CP-odd neutrino-antineutrino asymmetries in long-baseline experiments. Using the results of short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, we obtain rather strong upper bounds on the long-baseline probabilities 1-P(nu_e->nu_e) and P(nu_mu->nu_e). Nevertheless, the projected sensitivities of the MINOS and ICARUS experi…
Neutrino-electron scatterings ($ν- e$) are purely leptonic processes with robust Standard Model (SM) predictions. Their measurements can therefore provide constraints to physics beyond SM. Non-commutative (NC) field theories modify space-time commutation relations, and allow neutrino electromagnetic couplings at the tree level. Their contribution to neutrino-electron scattering cross-section was derived. Constraints were placed on the NC scale parameter $Λ_{NC}$ from $ν- e$ experiments with reactor and accelerator neutrinos. The most stringent limit of $Λ_{NC} > 3.3 TeV$ at 95% confidence leve…
We revisit the current experimental bounds on fourth-generation Majorana neutrino masses, including the effects of right handed neutrinos. Current bounds from LEPII are significantly altered by a global analysis. We show that the current bounds on fourth generation neutrinos decaying to eW and mu W can be reduced to about 80 GeV (from the current bound of 90 GeV), while a neutrino decaying to tau W can be as light as 62.1 GeV. The weakened bound opens up a neutrino decay channel for intermediate mass Higgs, and interesting multi-particle final states for Higgs and fourth generation lepton deca…
We present a new texture of neutrino mass matrix having three complex relations among its elements and study in detail the phenomenological implications. A characteristic feature of the resulting neutrino mass matrix is that the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle is predicted to lie in a very narrow region near $45^{\circ}$. We illustrate how such a form of the neutrino mass matrix can be realized using the non-Abelian flavor symmetry $A_4$ in the framework of type-I+II seesaw mechanism.
We find the constraints on various non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos from monojet+MET searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Also, we show that the measurement of neutrino-nucleon cross-section from the observation of high energy astrophysical neutrino events at IceCube facilitates strong constraints on NSI as well. To this end, we pursue a comparative study of the prospects of LHC and IceCube in detecting NSI, also mentioning the role of low-energy experiments. We discuss the case of NSI with a new vector boson $Z'$ and it is found that for some range of $m_{Z'}$ LHC puts mor…
