A continuous adaptive control design is developed for nonlinear dynamical systems with linearly parameterizable uncertainty involving time-varying uncertain parameters. The key feature of this design is a robust integral of the sign of the error (RISE)-like term in the adaptation law which compensates for potentially destabilizing terms in the closed-loop error system arising from the time-varying nature of uncertain parameters. A Lyapunov-based stability analysis ensures asymptotic tracking, and boundedness of the closed-loop signals.
This paper addresses a formation tracking problem for nonlinear multi-agent systems with time-varying actuator faults, in which only a subset of agents has access to the leader's information over the directed leader-follower network with a spanning tree. Both the amplitudes and signs of control coefficients induced by actuator faults are unknown and time-varying. The aforementioned setting improves the practical relevance of the problem to be investigated, and meanwhile, it poses technical challenges to distributed controller design and asymptotic stability analysis. By introducing a distribut…

One salient feature of cooperative formation tracking is its distributed nature that relies on localized control and information sharing over a sparse communication network. That is, a distributed control manner could be prone to malicious attacks and unreliable communication that deteriorate the formation tracking performance or even destabilize the whole multi-agent system. This paper studies a safe and reliable time-varying output formation tracking problem of linear multi-agent systems, where an attacker adversely injects any unbounded time-varying signals (false data injection (FDI) attac…
The optimal tracking problem is addressed in the robotics literature by using a variety of robust and adaptive control approaches. However, these schemes are associated with implementation limitations such as applicability in uncertain dynamical environments with complete or partial model-based control structures, complexity and integrity in discrete-time environments, and scalability in complex coupled dynamical systems. An online adaptive learning mechanism is developed to tackle the above limitations and provide a generalized solution platform for a class of tracking control problems. This …
This paper introduces an $\mathcal{L}_1$ adaptive control augmentation for geometric tracking control of quadrotors. In the proposed design, the $\mathcal{L}_1$ augmentation handles nonlinear (time- and state-dependent) uncertainties in the quadrotor dynamics without assuming or enforcing parametric structures, while the baseline geometric controller achieves stabilization of the known nonlinear model of the system dynamics. The $\mathcal{L}_1$ augmentation applies to both the rotational and the translational dynamics. Experimental results demonstrate that the augmented geometric controller sh…
This paper proposes an adaptive dynamic programming-based adaptive-gain sliding mode control (ADP-ASMC) scheme for a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with matched and unmatched disturbances. Starting from the dynamic of fixed-wing UAV, the control-oriented model composed of attitude subsystem and airspeed subsystem is established. According to the different issues in two subsystems, two novel adaptive-gain generalized super-twisting (AGST) algorithms are developed to eliminate the effects of disturbances in two subsystems and make the system trajectories tend to the designed integral s…
The time-varying output formation tracking for the heterogeneous multi-agent systems (MAS) is investigated in this paper. First, a distributed observer is constructed for followers to estimate the states of the leader, which can ensure that the estimation error converges to the origin in the prescribed time. Then, the local formation controller is designed for each follower based on the estimation of the observer, under which, the formation errors converge to the origin in the prescribed time as well. That is, the settling time of the whole system can be predefined in advance. It's noted that …
In the article$^a$, the authors introduced a time-varying Lyapunov function for the stability analysis of nonlinear systems whose motion is governed by standard Newton-Euler equations. The authors established asymptotic stability with the choice of two symmetric positive definite matrices restricted by certain eigenvalue bounds in the control law. Exponential stability in the sense of Lyapunov using integrator backstepping and Lyapunov redesign is established in this note using just one matrix in the derived controller. We do not impose minimum eigenvalue bound requirements on the symmetric po…
This paper proposes a novel control architecture for state and input constrained Euler-Lagrange (E-L) systems with parametric uncertainties. A simple saturated controller is strategically coupled with a Barrier Lyapunov Function (BLF) based controller to ensure state and input constraint satisfaction. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first result for E-L systems that guarantee asymptotic tracking with user-specified state and input constraints. The proposed controller also ensures that all the closed-loop signals remain bounded. The efficacy of the proposed controller in term…
In this article, a novel prescribed performance adaptive fixed-time backstepping control strategy is investigated for the attitude tracking of a 3-DOF helicopter. First, a new unified barrier function (UBF) is designed to convert the prescribed performance constrained system into an unconstrained one. Then, a fixed-time (FxT) backstepping control framework is established to achieve the attitude tracking. By virtual of a newly proposed inequality, a non-singular virtual control law is constructed. In addition, a FxT differentiator with a compensation mechanism is employed to overcome the matter…
The Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) framework has been introduced with the intention to provide stability and performance guarantees for analysis and controller synthesis for Nonlinear (NL) systems via convex methods. By extending results of the Linear Time-Invariant framework, mainly based on quadratic stability and performance using dissipativity theory, it has been assumed that they generalize tracking and disturbance rejection guarantees for NL systems. However, as has been shown in literature, stability and performance through standard dissipativity is not sufficient in order to satisfy th…
In this paper, formation tracking for a multi-AUV system (MAS) using an improved adaptive sliding mode control method is studied in the Three Dimensional (3-D) underwater environment. Firstly, the kinematics model and the dynamic model of the AUVs are given as the Six Dimensions of Freedom (6-DOF) considered. Then, control law based on the mathematical model of the AUVs is proposed based on the improved sliding mode method. A second order sliding mode control method is adopted to eliminate the chatting phenomenon of the controller. Thirdly, considering the water flow in the underwater working …
The controller of an input-affine system is determined through minimizing a time-varying objective function, where stabilization is ensured via a Lyapunov function decay condition as constraint. This constraint is incorporated into the objective function via a barrier function. The time-varying minimum of the resulting relaxed cost function is determined by a tracking system. This system is constructed using derivatives up to second order of the relaxed cost function and improves the existing approaches in time-varying optimization. Under some mild assumptions, the tracking system yields a sol…
This paper presents a novel adaptive fast smooth second-order sliding mode control for the attitude tracking of the three degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) helicopter system with lumped disturbances. Combining with a non-singular integral sliding mode surface, we propose a novel adaptive fast smooth second-order sliding mode control method to enable elevation and pitch angles to track given desired trajectories respectively with the features of non-singularity, adaptation to disturbances, chattering suppression and fast finite-time convergence. In addition, a novel adaptive-gain smooth second-order sl…
In this paper, a novel adaptive smooth disturbance observer-based fast finite-time adaptive backstepping control scheme is presented for the attitude tracking of the 3-DOF helicopter system subject to compound disturbances. First, an adaptive smooth disturbance observer (ASDO) is proposed to estimate the composite disturbance, which owns the characteristics of smooth output, fast finite-time convergence, and adaptability to the disturbance of unknown derivative boundary. Then, a finite-time backstepping control protocol is construct to drive the elevation and pitch angles to track reference tr…
Adaptive fuzzy control strategies are established to achieve global prescribed performance with prescribed-time convergence for strict-feedback systems with mismatched uncertainties and unknown nonlinearities. Firstly, to quantify the transient and steady performance constraints of the tracking error, a class of prescribed-time prescribed performance functions are designed, and a novel error transformation function is introduced to remove the initial value constraints and solve the singularity problem in existing works. Secondly, based on dynamic surface control methods, controllers with or wi…

We consider the problem of tracking an adversarial state sequence in a linear dynamical system subject to adversarial disturbances and loss functions, generalizing earlier settings in the literature. To this end, we develop three techniques, each of independent interest. First, we propose a comparator-adaptive algorithm for online linear optimization with movement cost. Without tuning, it nearly matches the performance of the optimally tuned gradient descent in hindsight. Next, considering a related problem called online learning with memory, we construct a novel strongly adaptive algorithm th…
In this paper, we investigate the model reference adaptive control approach for uncertain piecewise affine systems with performance guarantees. The proposed approach ensures the error metric, defined as the weighted Euclidean norm of the state tracking error, to be confined within a user-defined time-varying performance bound. We introduce an auxiliary performance function to construct a barrier Lyapunov function. This auxiliary performance signal is reset at each switching instant, which prevents the transgression of the barriers caused by the jumps of the error metric at switching instants. …

Then, a finite-time backstepping control scheme is constructed to fulfill the tracking control of the elevation and pitch angles. In addition, a hybrid finite-time differ…
This paper studies the immersion and invariance (I&I) adaptive tracking problem for a class of nonlinear systems with nonlinear parameterization in the ISS framework. Under some mild assumptions, a novel I&I adaptive control algorithm is proposed, leading to an interconnection of an ISS estimation error subsystem and an ISS tracking error subsystem. Using an ISS small-gain condition, the desired uniform global asymptotic stability of the resulting interconnected "error" system can be achieved and a sum-type strict Lyapunov function can be explicitly constructed. Taking advantage of this ISS-bas…
While many theoretical works concerning Adaptive Dynamic Programming (ADP) have been proposed, application results are scarce. Therefore, we design an ADP-based optimal trajectory tracking controller and apply it to a large-scale ball-on-plate system. Our proposed method incorporates an approximated reference trajectory instead of using setpoint tracking and allows to automatically compensate for constant offset terms. Due to the off-policy characteristics of the algorithm, the method requires only a small amount of measured data to train the controller. Our experimental results show that this…
Target tracking represents a state estimation problem recurrent in many practical scenarios like air traffic control, autonomous vehicles, marine radar surveillance and so on. In a Bayesian perspective, when phenomena like clutter are present, the vast majority of the existing tracking algorithms have to deal with association hypotheses which can grow in the number over time; in that case, the posterior state distribution can become computationally intractable and approximations have to be introduced. In this work, the impact of the number of hypotheses and corresponding reductions is investig…
This paper studies cooperative tracking problem of heterogeneous Euler-Lagrange systems with an uncertain leader. Different from most existing works, system dynamic knowledge of the leader node is unaccessible to any follower node in our paper. Distributed adaptive observers are designed for all follower nodes, simultaneously estimate the state and parameters of the leader node. The observer design does not rely on the frequency knowledge of the leader node, and the estimation errors are shown to converge to zero exponentially. Moreover, the results are applied to general directed graphs, wher…
