We accurately approximate the contribution of a Yukawa-coupled fermion to the inflaton effective potential for inflationary geometries with a general first slow roll parameter $ε(t)$. For $ε= 0$ our final result agrees with the famous computation of Candelas and Raine done long ago on de Sitter background, and both computations degenerate to the result of Coleman and Weinberg in the flat space limit. Our result contains a small part that depends nonlocally on the inflationary geometry. Even in the numerically larger local part, very little of the $ε$ dependence takes the form of Ricci scalars. We discuss the implications of these corrections for inflation.
We present a detailed and systematic analysis of the coarse-grained, nonequilibrium dynamics of a scalar inflaton field coupled to a fermion field in the latter stages of the reheating period of inflationary cosmology. We derive coupled nonperturbative equations for the inflaton mean field and variance at two loops in a general curved spacetime, and show that the equations of motion are real and causal, and that the gap equation for the two-point function is dissipative due to fermion particle production. We then specialize to the case of Minkowski space and small-amplitude inflaton oscillatio…
The search for constituents that can explain the periods of accelerating expansion of the Universe is a fundamental topic in cosmology. In this context, we investigate how fermionic fields minimally and non-minimally coupled with the gravitational field may be responsible for accelerated regimes during the evolution of the Universe. The forms of the potential and coupling of the model are determined through the technique of the Noether symmetry for two cases. The first case comprises a Universe filled only with the fermion field. Cosmological solutions are straightforwardly obtained for this c…
We derive the renormalized equations of motion and the renormalized energy-momentum tensor for fermions coupled to a spatially homogeneous scalar field (inflaton) in a flat FRW geometry. The fermion back reaction to the metric and to the inflaton field is formulated in one-loop approximation. Having determined the infinite counter terms in an $\bar{MS}$ scheme we formulate the finite terms in a form suitable for numerical computation. We comment on the trace anomaly which is inferred from the standard analysis. We also address the problem of initial singularities and determine the Bogoliubov t…
Motivated by apparent persistent large scale anomalies in the CMB we study the influence of fermionic degrees of freedom on the dynamics of inflaton fluctuations as a possible source of violations of (nearly) scale invariance on cosmological scales. We obtain the non-equilibrium effective action of an inflaton-like scalar field with Yukawa interactions ($Y_{D,M}$) to light \emph{fermionic} degrees of freedom both for Dirac and Majorana fields in de Sitter space-time. The effective action leads to Langevin equations of motion for the fluctuations of the inflaton-like field, with self-energy cor…
In the light of the new observational results we discuss the status of the exponential potentials driving inflation. We depart form the minimal scenario and study an inflaton kinetically coupled to the Einstein tensor. We find that in this case the exponential potentials are well compatible with observations. Their predictions coincide with those of the chaotic type quadratic potential for an inflaton minimally coupled to gravity. We show that there exists a simple mapping between the two models. Moreover, a novel aspect of our model is that it features a natural exit from the inflationary pha…
We consider N=2 supergravity theories that have the same spectrum as the R+R^2 supergravity, as predicted from the off-shell counting of degrees of freedom. These theories describe standard N=2 supergravity coupled to one or two long massive vector multiplets. The central charge is not gauged in these models and they have a Minkowski vacuum with N=2 unbroken supersymmetry. The gauge symmetry, being non-compact, is always broken. $α$-deformed inflaton potentials are obtained, in the case of a single massive vector multiplet, with $α=1/3$ and $2/3$. The $α=1$ potential (i.e. the Starobinsky pote…
Inflation has long been the accepted paradigm for understanding the early universe. Most models of inflation have a scalar field acting as the inflaton particle which decays after inflation during a process called reheating into standard model (SM) particles. In this work, we consider a fermion as the inflaton field. Noether symmetry arguments show that an exponentially expanding universe is possible with a fermion if it is coupled non-minimally to gravity. We use such a scenario in this model to study both inflation and reheating. We find relations between the various parameters involved in t…
Due to the universality of gravitational interactions, it is generally expected that a stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background could form during the reheating period when the inflaton perturbatively decays with the emission of gravitons. Previously, only models in which the inflaton dominantly decays into a pair of light scalar and/or fermion particles were considered in the literature. In the present paper, we focus on the cases with a vector particle pair in the final decay product. The differential decay rates for the three-body gravitational inflaton decays are presented for two typi…
Recently, an interesting inflationary scenario, named Gauss-Bonnet inflation, is proposed by Kanti et al.~\cite{Kanti:2015pda,Kanti:2015dra}. In the model, there is no inflaton potential but the inflaton couples to the Guass-Bonnet term. In the case of quadratic coupling, they find inflation occurs with graceful exit. The scenario is attractive because of the natural set-up. However, we show there exists the gradient instability in the tensor perturbations in this inflationary model. We further prove the no-go theorem for the Gauss-Bonnet inflation without an inflaton potential.
The MCMC analysis of the CMB+LSS data in the context of the Ginsburg-Landau approach to inflation indicated that the fourth degree double--well inflaton potential best fits the present CMB and LSS data. This provided a lower bound for the ratio r of the tensor to scalar fluctuations and as most probable value r = 0.05, within reach of the forthcoming CMB observations. We systematically analyze here the effects of arbitrary higher order terms in the inflaton potential on the CMB observables: spectral index ns and ratio r. Furthermore, we compute in close form the inflaton potential dynamically …
Recently, we have performed research on the subject of the cosmological constant problem. The scenario is based on two postulates for inflationary theory: one is that inflaton $ϕ$ can interact with radiation (relativistic particles); the other is that radiation will be created continuously during and after the epoch of inflation. According to these postulates and from a "macroscopic perspective", we discover that radiation can be viewed as a product of the interaction between $\dotϕ$ and some "effective kinetic frictional force" that exists in inflaton dynamics. Deducing and surmising from "ef…
We have carried out detailed $k$-mode analysis of single-inflaton slow-roll inflationary perturbations including quantum fluctuations by setting up non-linear coupled differential equations of inflaton field ($ϕ$), its perturbation ($δϕ$) and the metric perturbation (the Bardeen potential, $Φ_B$), and calculated the number of e-folds ($N$), scalar spectral index ($n_s$), tensor spectral index ($n_h$), scalar power spectrum ($Δ_s$), tensor power spectrum ($Δ_h$), tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$) and the Hubble parameter ($H$) for different $k$ values at the horizon crossing. In these calculations w…
We investigate non-perturbative production of fermionic dark matter in the early universe. We study analytically the gravitational production mechanism accompanied by the coupling of fermions to the background inflaton field. The latter leads to the variation of effective fermion mass during preheating and makes the resulting spectrum and abundance sensitive to its parameters. Assuming fast preheating that completes in less than the inflationary Hubble time and no oscillations of the inflaton field after inflation, we find an abundant production of particles with energies ranging from the infl…
We describe a way to construct supergravity models with an arbitrary inflaton potential V (ϕ) and show that all other scalar fields in this class of models can be stabilized at the inflationary trajectory by a proper choice of the Kähler potential.
In this paper, we considered an inflationary model that effectively behaves as a modified Chaplygin gas in the context of quintessence cosmology. We reconstructed the inflaton potential bottom-up and using the recent observational data we fixed the free parameters of the model. We showed that the modified Chaplygin gas inspired model is suitable for both the early and the late time acceleration but has shortcomings between the two periods.
Inflation near a maximum of the potential is studied when non-local derivative operators are included in the inflaton Lagrangian. Such terms can impose additional sources of friction on the field. For an arbitrary spacetime geometry, these effects can be quantified in terms of a local field theory with a potential whose curvature around the turning point is strongly suppressed. This implies that a prolonged phase of slow-roll inflation can be achieved with potentials that are otherwise too steep to drive quasi-exponential expansion. We illustrate this mechanism within the context of p-adic str…
We obtain the effective inflaton potential during slow roll inflation by including the one loop quantum corrections to the energy momentum tensor from scalar curvature and tensor perturbations as well as quantum fluctuations from light scalars and light Dirac fermions generically coupled to the inflaton. During slow roll inflation there is a clean and unambiguous separation between superhorizon and subhorizon contributions to the energy momentum tensor. The superhorizon part is determined by the curvature perturbations and scalar field fluctuations: both feature infrared enhancements as the in…
Presented is the exact solution of the problem of finding a potential of an inflaton scalar field for which adiabatic perturbations generated during a de Sitter (inflationary) stage in the early Universe have the exactly flat (or, the Harrison-Zeldovich) initial spectrum. This solution lies outside the scope of the slow-roll approximation and higher-order corrections to it. The potential found depends on two arbitrary physical constants, one of those determines an amplitude of perturbations. For small (zero) values of the other constant, a long (infinite) inflationary stage with slow rolling o…
Gravitational stability of torsion and inflaton field in a four-dimensional spacetime de Sitter solution in scalar-tensor cosmology where Cartan torsion propagates is investigated in detail. Inflaton and torsion evolution equations are derived by making use of a Lagrangean method. Stable and unstable modes for torsion and inflatons are found to be dependent of the background torsion and inflaton fields. Present astrophysical observations favour a stable mode for torsion since this would explain why no relic torsion imprint has been found on the Cosmic Background Radiation in the universe.
We consider a non-minimally coupled inflaton, in a higher order curvature background, leading to a potential which evolves with the curvature scalar of the Universe, and which describes two regimes. The first one is a de Sitter phase, where the potential is static, and an exact exponential solution is found for the inflaton. The second regime, triggered by the inflaton reaching a threshold, leads to a power-law expansion, during which the potential becomes flat, quickly enough for the inflaton never to reach the minimum of the initial symmetry breaking potential. This scenario is an alternativ…

A globally supersymmetric model of inflation will not work in a generic supergravity theory because the higher order, nonrenormalisable supergravity corrections destroy the flatness of the inflaton's potential. In this talk I derive a form for the Kahler potential which eliminates these corrections if $ W = \partial W / \partial φ= ψ= 0 $ during inflation (where $W$ is the superpotential, the inflaton is contained in $φ$, and $ \partial W / \partial ψ\neq 0 $). I then point out that Kahler potentials of the required form often occur in superstrings and that the target space duality symmetries …
We clarify classical inflaton models by considering them as effective field theories `a la Ginzburg-Landau. In this approach, the WMAP statement excluding the pure phi^4 potential implies the presence of an inflaton mass term at the scale m ~ 10^{13}GeV.Chaotic, new and hybrid inflation models are studied in an unified manner. In all cases the inflaton potential takes the form V(phi)=m^2 M_{Pl}^2 v(phi/M_{Pl}), where all coefficients in v(varphi) are of order one.If such potential corresponds to supersymmetry breaking, the susy scale is sqrt{m M_{Pl}}~10^{16}GeV which coincides with the GUT sca…
We accurately approximate the contribution that photons make to the effective potential of a charged inflaton for inflationary geometries with an arbitrary first slow roll parameter $ε$. We find a small, nonlocal contribution and a numerically larger, local part. The local part involves first and second derivatives of $ε$, coming exclusively from the constrained part of the electromagnetic field which carries the long range interaction. This causes the effective potential induced by electromagnetism to respond more strongly to geometrical evolution than for either scalars, which have no deriva…
If the inflaton couples to other degrees of freedom that populate the post-inflationary stage, such coupling modifies the dynamics of the inflaton \emph{during} inflation. We consider light fermions Yukawa coupled to the inflaton as "unobserved" degrees of freedom integrated out of the total density matrix. Tracing out these degrees of freedom yields a \emph{mixed} density matrix whose time evolution is described by an effective field theory. We show that the coupling leads to profuse fermion pair production for super-Hubble inflaton fluctuations which lead to the \emph{growth of entanglement …
The Planck data on cosmic microwave background indicates that the Starobinsky-type model with concave inflation potential is favored over the convex-type chaotic inflation. Is there any reason for that? Here we argue that if our universe began with a Euclidean wormhole, then the Starobinsky-type inflation is probabilistically favored. It is known that for a more generic choice of parameters than that originally assumed by Hartle and Hawking, the Hartle-Hawking wave function is dominated by Euclidean wormholes, which can be interpreted as the creation of two classical universes from nothing. We…
In a previous paper I showed that a classical scalar potential with $V''/V \sim 1$ can be sufficiently flattened by quantum corrections to give rise to slow-roll inflation. In this paper I give a hybrid inflation implementation of that idea which can naturally produce a spectral index in the observationally viable range even for $V^{1/4} \sim 10^{10}$ to $10^{11}$ GeV. Although any observationally viable spectral index can be obtained, the model does predict a distinctive spectral shape.
We discuss the latest constraints on a Taylor-expanded scalar inflaton potential, obtained focusing on its observable part only. This is in contrast with other works in which an extrapolation of the potential is applied using the slow-roll hierarchy. We find significant differences. The results discussed here apply to a broader range of models, since no assumption about the invisible e-folds of inflation has to be made, thereby remaining conservative.

A cosmological model where a fermion field is non-minimally coupled with the gravitational field is studied. By applying Noether symmetry the possible functions for the potential density of the fermion field and for the coupling are determined. Cosmological solutions are found showing that the non-minimally coupled fermion field behaves as an inflaton describing an accelerated inflationary scenario, whereas the minimally coupled fermion field describes a decelerated period being identified as dark matter.
We derive some new constraints on single-field inflation from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 3-year data combined with the Sloan Luminous Red Galaxy survey. Our work differs from previous analyses by focusing only on the observable part of the inflaton potential, or in other words, by making absolutely no assumption about extrapolation of the potential from its observable region to its minimum (i.e., about the branch of the potential responsible for the last ~50 inflationary e-folds). We only assume that inflation starts at least a few e-folds before the observable Universe leaves th…
The spectrum of curvature perturbation generated during inflation is studied in the case the inflation-driving scalar field (inflaton) $ϕ$ crosses over its potential extremum. It is shown that the nondecaying mode of perturbation has a finite value and a proper formula is given. The result is also extended to more general cases where $\ddotϕ$ is non-negligible.
SKA will be a major step forward not only in astrophysics, but also in precision cosmology. We show how the neutral hydrogen intensity map can be combined with the Planck measurements of the CMB power spectrum, to provide a precision test of the inflaton potential. For a conservative range of redshifts we find that SKA can significantly improve current constraints on the Hubble slow-roll parameters.
We determine generalised asymptotic solutions for the inflaton field, the Hubble parameter, and the equation-of-state parameter valid during the oscillatory phase of reheating for potentials that close to their global minima behave as even monomial potentials. For the quadratic potential we derive a generalised asymptotic expansion for the inflaton with respect to the scale set by inverse powers of the cosmic time. For the quartic potential we derive an explicit, two-term generalised asymptotic solution in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions, with a scale set by inverse powers of the square roo…
There is a wide consensus on the correct dynamics of the background in loop quantum cosmology. In this article we make a systematic investigation of the duration of inflation by varying what we think to be the most important "unknowns" of the model: the way to set initial conditions, the amount of shear at the bounce and the shape of the inflaton potential.
We develop an analytic approximation for the coincidence limit of a massive scalar propagator in an arbitrary spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic geometry. We employ this to compute the one loop corrections to the inflaton effective potential from a quadratic coupling to a minimally coupled scalar. We also extend the Friedmann equations to cover potentials that depend locally on the Hubble parameter and the first slow roll parameter.
Based on solutions of the Stewart-Lyth inverse problem it is argued that in the CMB data analysis the parametrization of the primordial spectra from inflation must include the `running' of both, scalar and tensorial, spectral indices if information beyond the exponential potential model is wanted to be detected.
We consider preheating in models in which the potential for the inflaton is given by a fractional power, as is the case in axion monodromy inflation. We assume a standard coupling between the inflaton field and a scalar matter field. We find that in spite of the fact that the oscillation of the inflaton about the field value which minimizes the potential is anharmonic, there is nevertheless a parametric resonance instability, and we determine the Floquet exponent which describes this instability as a function of the parameters of the inflaton potential.
We consider reheating for a charged inflaton which is minimally coupled to electromagnetism. The evolution of such an inflaton induces a time-dependent mass for the photon. We show how the massive photon propagator can be expressed as a spatial Fourier mode sum involving three different sorts of mode functions, just like the constant mass case. We develop accurate analytic approximations for these mode functions, and use them to approximate the effective force exerted on the inflaton $0$-mode. This effective force allows one to simply compute the evolution of the inflaton $0$-mode and to follo…
In this paper we break the scale invariance of the primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbations of inflation. Introducing a singular behaviour due to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the inflaton potential, we obtain fully analytic expressions of scale dependent oscillation and a modulation in power on small scale in the primordial spectrum. And we give the associated cosmic microwave background and matter power spectra which we can observe now and discuss the signature of the scale dependence. We also address the possibility of whether some inflationary model with featured potential m…
It was recently proposed that a field theory cannot be consistent with quantum gravity if it allows a mode shorter than the Planck length to exit the Hubble horizon. This is called the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC). We discuss the implications of the TCC on the possible shape of the inflaton potential in single-field slow-roll inflation. We point out that (1) there is generically an initial condition in which the total e-folding number $N_\text{total}$ is doubled or more compared to the e-folds necessary for the cosmic microwave background fluctuations, and (2) a sizable negative…
Scalar perturbations during inflation can be substantially amplified by tiny features in the inflaton potential. A bump-like feature behaves like a local speed-breaker and lowers the speed of the scalar field, thereby locally enhancing the scalar power spectrum. A bump-like feature emerges naturally if the base inflaton potential $V_b(ϕ)$ contains a local correction term such as $V_b(ϕ)\left[1+\varepsilon(ϕ)\right]$ at $ϕ=ϕ_0$. The presence of such a localised correction term at $ϕ_0$ leads to a large peak in the curvature power spectrum and to an enhanced probability of black hole formation. …
We reconsider the fine-tuning problem of scalar-driven inflation arising from the need to couple the inflaton to ordinary matter in order to make reheating efficient. Quantum fluctuations of this matter induce Coleman-Weinberg corrections to the inflaton potential, depending (for de Sitter background) in a complex way on the ratio of the inflaton to the Hubble parameter. These corrections are not Planck-suppressed and cannot be completely subtracted because they are not even local for a general geometry. A previous study showed that it is not satisfactory to subtract a local function of just t…
We show how observations of the density perturbation (scalar) spectrum and the gravitational wave (tensor) spectrum allow a reconstruction of the potential responsible for cosmological inflation. A complete functional reconstruction or a perturbative approximation about a single scale are possible; the suitability of each approach depends on the data available. Consistency equations between the scalar and tensor spectra are derived, which provide a powerful signal of inflation.
We explore the dynamics and observational predictions of the Warm Little Inflaton scenario, presently the simplest realization of warm inflation within a concrete quantum field theory construction. We consider three distinct types of scalar potentials for the inflaton, namely chaotic inflation with a quartic monomial potential, a Higgs-like symmetry breaking potential and a non-renormalizable plateau-like potential. In each case, we determine the parametric regimes in which the dynamical evolution is consistent for 50-60 e-folds of inflation, taking into account thermal corrections to the scal…
A special class of conformal gravity theories is proposed to solve the long standing problem of the fine-tuned cosmological constant. In the proposed model time evolution of the inflaton field leaves behind a nearly vanishing, but finite value of dark energy density of order (a few meV)$^4$ to explain the late-time accelerating universe. A multiple scalar inflaton field is assumed to have a conformal coupling to the Ricci scalar curvature in the lagrantian, which results in, after a Weyl rescaling to the Einstein metric frame, modification of inflaton kinetic and potential terms along with its…
We study the problem of scalar particle production after inflation by a rapidly oscillating inflaton field. We use the framework of the chaotic inflation scenario with quartic and quadratic inflaton potentials. Particular attention is paid to parametric resonance phenomena which take place in the presence of the quickly oscillating inflaton field. We have found that in the region of applicability of perturbation theory the effects of parametric resonance are crucial, and estimates based on first order Born approximation often underestimate the particle production. In the case of the quartic in…
Sharp shapes in the inflaton potentials often lead to short departures from slow roll which, in turn, result in deviations from scale invariance in the scalar power spectrum. Typically, in such situations, the scalar power spectrum exhibits a burst of features associated with modes that leave the Hubble radius either immediately before or during the epoch of fast roll. Moreover, one also finds that the power spectrum turns scale invariant at smaller scales corresponding to modes that leave the Hubble radius at later stages, when slow roll has been restored. In other words, the imprints of brie…
Using the Hubble parameter as new `inverse time' coordinate ($H$-formalism), a new method of reconstructing the inflaton potential is developed also using older results which, in principle, is applicable to any order of the slow-roll approximation. In first and second order, we need three observational data as inputs: the scalar spectral index $n_s$ and the amplitudes of the scalar and the tensor spectrum. We find constraints between the values of $n_s$ and the corresponding values for the wavelength $λ$. By imposing a dependence $λ(n_s)$, we were able to reconstruct and visualize inflationary…
We describe the coupling of matter fields to an inflationary sector of supergravity, the inflaton $Φ$ and a stabilizer $S$, in models where the Kahler potential has a flat inflaton direction. Such models include, in particular, advanced versions of the hyperbolic $α$-attractor models with a flat inflaton direction Kahler potential, providing a good fit to the observational data. If the superpotential is at least quadratic in the matter fields $U^{i}$, with restricted couplings to the inflaton sector, we prove that under certain conditions: i) The presence of the matter fields does not affect a…
