Electron-phonon interaction is of central importance for the electrical and heat transport properties of metals, and is directly responsible for charge-density-waves or (conventional) superconducting instabilities. The direct observation of phonon dispersion anomalies across electronic phase transitions can provide insightful information regarding the mechanisms underlying their formation. Here, we review the current status of phonon dispersion studies in superconductors under hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure. Advances in the instrumentation of high resolution inelastic X-ray scattering beamlines and pressure generating devices allow these measurements to be performed routinely at synchrotron beamlines worldwide.
Two-phonon contributions to meV-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of MgB2 at 300K are identified, in good agreement, in both intensity and energy, with a harmonic calculation using the force constant matrix from ab-inito LDA calculations. This contribution impacts the determination of the linewidth of the E2g phonon mode that is so important for the high Tc of this material. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of peaks in measurements of phonon dispersion (q>0) due to 2-phonon scattering in a non-rare-gas solid.
This paper has been withdrawn by the authors, because we had probably observed some spurious intensity with x=0.29 sample (Fig.3(b)). This came out after further studies of the detailed x-dependence of the highest energy LO phonon branch in LSCO.
In this work we present the results of an inelastic x-ray scattering experiment detailing the behavior of the transverse acoustic [110] phonon in BaFe2As2 as a function of temperature. When cooling through the structural transition temperature, the transverse acoustic phonon energy is reduced from the value at room temperature, reaching a maximum shift near inelastic momentum transfer q=0.1. This softening of the lattice results in a change of the symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic at the same temperature as the transition to long-range antiferromagnetic order. While the lattice distorti…
The phonon dispersions of $\mathrm{Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_{4+δ}}$ along the $[ξ,0,0]$ direction have been determined by inelastic x-ray scattering. Compared to the undoped parent compound, the two highest longitudinal phonon branches, associated with the Cu-O bond-stretching and out-of-plane oxygen vibration, are shifted to lower energies. Moreover, an anomalous softening of the bond-stretching band is observed around $\mathbf{q}=(0.2,0,0)$. These signatures provide evidence for strong electron-phonon coupling in this electron-doped high-temperature superconductor.
The capability to probe the dispersion of elementary spin, charge, orbital, and lattice excitations has positioned resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the forefront of photon science. Here we develop the scattering theory for RIXS on superconductors, calculating its momentum-dependent scattering amplitude. Considering superconductors with different pairing symmetries, we show that the low-energy scattering is strongly affected by the superconducting gap and coherence factors. This establishes RIXS as a tool to disentangle pairing symmetries and to probe the elementary excitations of …
Motivated by predictions of a substantial contribution of the "buckling" vibration of the CuO2 layers to d-wave superconductivity in the cuprates, we have performed an inelastic neutron scattering study of this phonon in an array of untwinned crystals of YBa2Cu3O7. The data reveal a pronounced softening of the phonon at the in-plane wave vector q = (0, 0.3) upon cooling below ~ 105 K, but no corresponding anomaly at q = (0.3, 0). Based on the observed in-plane anisotropy, we argue that the electron-phonon interaction responsible for this anomaly supports an electronic instability associated wi…
The paramagnon contribution to the quasiparticle inelastic scattering rate in disordered superconductors is presented. Using Anderson's exact eigenstate formalism, it is shown that the scattering rate is Stoner enhanced and is further enhanced by the disorder relative to the clean case in a manner similar to the disorder enhancement of the long-range Coulomb contribution. The results are discussed in connection with the possibility of conventional or unconventional superconductivity in the borocarbides. The results are compared to recent tunneling experiments on LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C.
The low energy phonons of two different graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) have been measured as a function of temperature using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). In the case of the non-superconductor BaC6, the phonons observed are significantly higher (up to 20 %) in energy than those predicted by theory, in contrast to the reasonable agreement found in superconducting CaC6. Additional IXS intensity is observed below 15 meV in both BaC6 and CaC6. It has been previously suggested that this additional inelastic intensity may arise from defect or vacancy modes in these compounds, unpredicte…
Inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) with very high (meV) energy resolution has become a valuable spectroscopic tool, complementing the well established coherent inelastic neutron scattering (INS) technique for phonon dispersion investigations. In the study of crystalline systems IXS is a viable alternative to INS, especially in cases where only small samples are available. Using IXS, we have measured the phonon dispersion of Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_{4+δ} along the [x,0,0] and [x,x,0] in-plane directions. Compared to the undoped parent compound, the two highest longitudinal optical (LO) phonon branc…
The thermoelectric coefficient $η(T)$ in unconventional superconductors is enhanced below $T_c$ by intermediate strength impurity scattering that is intrinsically particle-hole asymmetric. We compute $η(T)$ for a strong-coupling d-wave superconductor and investigate the effects of inelastic scattering originating from electron-boson interactions. We show that $η(T)$ is severely suppressed at temperatures just below $T_c$ by a particle-hole symmetric inelastic scattering rate. At lower temperatures inelastic scattering is frozen out and $η(T)$ recovers and regains its large amplitude. In the li…
The tunneling path between the CuO2-layers in cuprate superconductors and a scanning tunneling microscope tip passes through a barrier made from other oxide layers. This opens up the possibility that inelastic processes in the barrier contribute to the tunneling spectra. Such processes cause one or possibly more peaks in the second derivative current-voltage spectra displaced by phonon energies from the density of states singularity associated with superconductivity. Calculations of inelastic processes generated by apical O-phonons show good qualitative agreement with recent experiments report…
An electron-phonon interaction arising from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons is studied within the theoretical framework of Kondo lattices. It is relevant in strongly correlated electron liquids in cuprate oxide superconductors, which lie in the vicinity of the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition. It is enhanced by antiferromagnetic and superconducting fluctuations, which are developed mainly because of the superexchange interaction. When the enhancement of the electron-phonon interaction is large enough, it can explain the softening of phonons and kinks in the qu…
We report inelastic x-ray scattering experiments on the lattice dynamics in SmFeAsO and superconducting SmFeAsO$_{0.6}$F$_{0.35}$ single crystals. Particular attention was paid to the dispersions along the [100] direction of three optical modes close to 23 meV, polarized out of the FeAs planes. Remarkably, two of these modes are strongly renormalized upon fluorine doping. These results provide significant insight into the energy and momentum dependence of the coupling of the lattice to the electron system and underline the importance of spin-phonon coupling in the superconducting iron-pnictide…
We propose a novel electron-phonon interaction arising from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons. It is enhanced by spin and superconducting fluctuations, which are developed mainly because of the superexchange interaction. It must be responsible for the softening of phonons and kinks in the dispersion relation of quasi-particles. However, the superexchange interaction must be mainly responsible for the formation of Cooper pairs.
The low-energy magnetic excitations of the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si have been measured with inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal. Kondo-type spin fluctuations with an anisotropic wave vector dependence are observed in the paramagnetic state. These fluctuations do not survive in the antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN=2.2 K but are replaced by damped spin waves, whose dispersion is much stronger along the c-axis than in other directions. No change is observed in the excitation spectrum or the magnetic order as the system enters the superconduc…
We investigate the electronic dispersion of high-Tc superconductor on the basis of the two-dimensional three-band Hubbard model with the electron-phonon interaction together with the strong electron-electron interaction. In our model, it is shown across the hole-doped region of high-Tc superconductor that the electron-phonon interaction makes a dispersion kink, observed along the nodal direction, and that the small isotope effect appears on the electronic dispersion.
The role of electron-phonon interactions in iron-based superconductor is currently under debate with conflicting experimental reports on the isotope effect. To address this important issue, we employ the renormalization-group method to investigate the competition between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in these materials. The renormalization-group analysis shows that the ground state is a phonon-dressed unconventional superconductor: the dominant electronic interactions account for pairing mechanism while electron-phonon interactions are subdominant. Because of the phonon dr…
We discuss the effects of anisotropy on superconducting critical temperature and order parameter in a strongly coupled regime. The multiband representation is used as a model for anisotropy. We show that strong coupling effects in multiband superconductors lead to pair-breaking due to interband coupling because soft phonon modes play the same role as usual impurities. This effect makes the order parameters in different bands equal to each other and limits the upper bound on critical temperature.
It is shown that a generic form of an antiferromagnetic wave function opens strong electron-phonon coupling channels in the iron-based superconductors. In the nonmagnetic state these channels exist locally on a single iron atom, but are canceled out between the two iron atoms in the primitive unit cell. Our findings are based on symmetry and the presence of an xz/yz Fermi surface near the M point and thus should be relevant for the known iron-based pnictide or chalcogenide superconductors.
We investigate the dispersion and temperature dependence of a number of phonons in the recently discovered superconductor CaC6 utilizing inelastic x-ray scattering. Four [00L] and two ab-plane phonon modes are observed, and measured at temperatures both above and below T_c. In general, our measurements of phonon dispersions are in good agreement with existing theoretical calculations of the phonon dispersion. This is significant in light of several discrepancies between experimental measurements of phonon-derived quantities and theoretical calculations. The present work suggests that the origi…
The strong, electronically induced anomaly in the spectrum of the longitudinal optical (LO) phonons propagating along the main axes of the CuO$_2$ plane is tentatively attributed to the oxygen-oxygen charge transfer between the two oxygens in the plane. It is argued that this charge transfer can be large and that it is strongly coupled to the zone boundary LO phonons. The corresponding negative contribution to the free energy is quartic in the LO phonon amplitude, making the LO phonon unstable through the first order phase transition, with a concomitant domain structure.
Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high-$T_c$ superconductors, particularly in the Fe-based systems. We used inelastic x-ray scattering to extract the temperature-dependent nematic correlation length $ξ$ from the anomalous softening of acoustic phonon modes in FeSe, underdoped Ba(Fe$_{0.97}$Co$_{0.03}$)$_2$As$_2$ and optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$. In all cases, we find that $ξ$ is well described by a power law $(T-T_0)^{-1/2}$ extending over a wide temperature range. We attributed this mean-field behavior and the extended fluctuation regime to a sizable nem…
This treatise reviews latest results obtained from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on cuprate superconductors, with a special focus on the electron-phonon interaction. What has emerged is rich information about the anomalous electron-phonon interaction well beyond the traditional views of the subject. It exhibits strong doping, momentum and phonon symmetry dependence, and shows complex interplay with the strong electron-electron interaction in these materials.
High Tc superconductors show a rich variety of phases associated with their charge degrees of freedom. Valence charges can give rise to charge ordering or acoustic plasmons in these layered cuprate superconductors. While charge ordering has been observed for both hole- and electron-doped cuprates, acoustic plasmons have only been found in electron-doped materials. Here, we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to observe the presence of acoustic plasmons in two families of hole-doped cuprate superconductors [La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) and Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+d (Bi2201)], crucially completing t…
Coupling between electrons and phonons (lattice vibrations) drives the formation of the electron pairs responsible for conventional superconductivity. The lack of direct evidence for electron-phonon coupling in the electron dynamics of the high transition temperature superconductors has driven an intensive search for an alternative mechanism. A coupling of an electron with a phonon would result in an abrupt change of its velocity and scattering rate near the phonon energy. Here we use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to probe electron dynamics -velocity and scattering rate- for three …
We have measured the resistivity of PrFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ samples over a wide range of temperature in order to elucidate the role of electron-phonon interaction on normal- and superconducting-state properties. The linear T dependence of $ρ$ above 170 K followed by a saturationlike behavior at higher temperature is a clear signature of strong electron-phonon coupling. From the analysis of T dependence of $ρ$, we have estimated several normal-state parameters useful for understanding the origin of superconductivity in this system. Our results suggest that Fe-based oxypnictides are phonon mediated…
The inelastic scattering rates of quasiparticles in a two-dimensional d-wave superconductor, which arise from interactions with either acoustic phonons or other quasiparticles, are calculated within second order perturbation theory. We discover a strong enhancement of scattering with collinear momenta, brouth about by the special kinematics of the two-dimensional fermions with Dirac-like spectrum near the nodes of the d-wave order parameter. In the case of a local instantaneous interparticle potential we find that either an RPA-type resummation of the perturbation series or an inclusion of non…
We report measurements of the phonon density of states as measured with inelastic x-ray scattering in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ powders. An unexpected strong renormalization of phonon branches around 23 meV is observed as fluorine is substituted for oxygen. Phonon dispersion measurements on SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ single crystals allow us to identify the 21 meV A$_{1g}$ in-phase (Sm,As) and the 26 meV B$_{1g}$ (Fe,O) modes to be responsible for this renormalization, and may reveal unusual electron-phonon coupling through the spin channel in iron-based superconductors.
We studied the isotope effect of phonon in the Fe-based superconductors using a phenomenological two band model for the sign-changing s-wave ($\pm$s-wave) state. Within this mean-field model, we showed that the large isotope effect is not inconsistent with the $\pm$s-wave pairing state and its high transition temperature. In principle, a large phonon isotope coefficient $α$ implies a large phonon coupling constant. However, the asymmetric density of states (DOS) between two bands substantially enhances the value of $α$, so that a moderate value of the phonon coupling constant ($λ_{\rm ph} \app…
We analyze the effects of an electron-phonon interaction on the one-electron spectral weight A(k,omega) of a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. We study the case of an Einstein phonon mode with various momentum-dependent electron-phonon couplings and compare the structure produced in A(k,omega) with that obtained from coupling to the magnetic pi-resonant mode. We find that if the strength of the interactions are adjusted to give the same renormalization at the nodal point, the differences in A(k,omega) are generally small but possibly observable near k=(pi,0).
We report nuclear magnetic resonance studies on the beta-pyrochlore oxide superconductor KOs2O6. The nuclear relaxation at the K sites is entirely caused by fluctuations of electric field gradient, which we ascribe to highly anharmonic low frequency oscillation (rattling) of K ions. A phenomenological analysis shows a crossover from overdamped to underdamped behavior of the rattling phonons with decreasing temperature and its sudden sharpening below the superconducting transition temperature Tc. Absence of the Hebel-Slichter peak in the relaxation rate at the O sites below Tc also indicates st…
The t-t'-t''-J model of electrons interacting with three phonon modes (breathing, apical breathing, and buckling) is considered. The wave-vector dependence of the matrix elements of the electron-phonon interaction leads to opposite contributions to the pairing potential with the d-symmetry: the buckling mode facilitates electron pairing, while the breathing mode suppresses it. As a result, the critical temperature of La{2 - x}Sr{x}CuO{4} that is associated with the magnetic mechanism is lowered when phonons are taken into account.
Using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission data in conjunction with that from neutron and other probes, we show that electron-phonon (el-ph) coupling is strong in cuprates superconductors and it plays an important role in pairing. In addition to the strong electron correlation, the inclusion of phonons provides a theoretical framework explaining many important phenomena that cannot be understood by a strongly correlated electronic model alone. Especially it is indispensable to explain the difference among materials. The phonons with the wave number around the (0,qx) and (qx,0) axes cre…
Assuming the exchange of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations as the Cooper pairing mechanism we calculate the doping dependence of the resonance peak seen in inelastic neutron scattering and the magnetic coherence effect. Most importantly, we find that the resonance peak in the magnetic susceptibility, ${Im}χ({\bf q},ω)$, appears {\it only} in the superconducting state, that it scales with $T_c$, and that magnetic coherence is a result of a d-wave order parameter. We further analyze the structure of ${Im}χ$ below $T_c$, the position of the peak at $ω_{res}$ and the consequences for photoemissi…
In this paper we calculate the electron-phonon coupling of the newly-discovered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs from first-principles, using Density Functional Perturbation Theory. For pure LaOFeAs, the calculated electron-phonon coupling constant $λ=0.21$ and logarithmic-averaged frequency $ω_{ln}=206 K$, give a maximum $T_c$ of 0.8 K, using the standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory. For the $F-$doped compounds, we predict even smaller coupling constants, due to the strong suppression of the electronic Density of States at the Fermi level. To reproduce the experimental $T_c=26 K$, a 5-6 times…
To investigate the possibility whether electron-phonon coupling can enhance orbital fluctuations in iron-based superconductors, we develop an ab initio method to construct the effective low-energy models including the phonon-related terms. With the derived effective electron-phonon interactions and phonon frequencies, we estimate the static part (ω=0) of the phonon-mediated effective on-site intra- or inter-orbital electron-electron attractions as ~ -0.4 eV and exchange or pair-hopping terms as ~ -0.02 eV. We analyze the model with the derived interactions together with the electronic repulsio…
We present a combined density-functional-perturbation-theory and inelastic neutron scattering study of the lattice dynamical properties of YNi2B2C. In general, very good agreement was found between theory and experiment for both phonon energies and line widths. Our analysis reveals that the strong coupling of certain low energy modes is linked to the presence of large displacements of the light atoms, i.e. B and C, which is unusual in view of the rather low phonon energies. Specific modes exhibiting a strong coupling to the electronic quasiparticles were investigated as a function of temperatu…
In this paper we discuss the normal and superconducting state properties of two pnictide superconductors, LaOFeAs and LaONiAs, using Migdal-Eliashberg theory and density functional perturbation theory. Inclusion of multiband effects increases the Tc only marginally. To reproduce the experimental $T_c$, a 5-6 times larger coupling constant would be needed. Our results indicate that standard elec…
The capability to probe the dispersion of elementary spin, charge, orbital, and lattice excitations has positioned resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the forefront of photon science. In this work, we will investigate how RIXS can contribute to a deeper understanding of the orbital properties and of the pairing mechanism in unconventional high-temperature superconductors. In particular, we will show how direct RIXS spectra of magnetic excitations can reveal long-range orbital correlations in transition metal compounds, by discriminating different kind of orbital order in magnetic and…
SrPt3P has recently been reported to exhibit superconductivity with Tc = 8.4 K. To explore its superconducting mechanism, we have performed electron and phonon band calculations based on the density functional theory, and found that the superconductivity in SrPt3P is well described by the strong coupling phonon-mediated mechanism. We have demonstrated that superconducting charge carriers come from pdπ-hybridized bands between Pt and P ions, which couple to low energy (~ 5 meV) phonon modes confined on the ab in-plane. These in-plane phonon modes, which do not break antipolar nature of SrPt3P, …
Inelastic x-ray scattering and $ab$-$initio$ calculation are applied to investigate the lattice dynamics and electron-phonon coupling of the ternary silicide superconductor CaAlSi ($P/bar{6}m2$). A soft c-axis polarized mode is clearly observed along the $/Gamma$-$A$-$L$ symmetry directions. The soft mode is strongly anharmonically broadened at room temperature, but, at 10 K, its linewidth narrows and becomes in good agreement with calculations of linear electron-phonon coupling. This establishes a coherent description of the detailed phonon properties in this system and links them clearly and…
We performed a polarized Raman scattering study of quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. We detect two A$_1^\prime$ phonons and three E$^\prime$ phonons. One of the A$_1^\prime$ modes exhibits a nearly temperature-independent Fano lineshape. Based on our first-principles calculations, we ascribe this mode to the in-phase vibrations of Cr atoms within one layer. This observation strongly suggests that the magnetic fluctuations in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ are coupled to the electronic structure \emph{via} the lattice.
We investigate the low energy acoustical and optical modes in $\mathrm{HgBa_2CuO_{4+δ}}$ using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). The experimental phonon dispersion and the dynamical structure factor are compared with an atomic shell model, and the set of the atomic potentials obtained are discussed. Our results are also compared with those obtained by Raman spectroscopy and with density-of-state data measured by inelastic neutron scattering.
Spin subsystem of the copper oxides within the polar Jahn-Teller centers model corresponds to a singlet-triplet magnet where the local boson movement accompanied by the induced longitudinal spin fluctuations. These fluctuations determine the features of the magnetic inelastic scattering in the high-Tc cuprates.
Electron-phonon interaction in copper oxide superconductors is still enigmatic. Strong coupling for certain optic phonons is now well established experimentally, but theoretical understanding is challenging. Scattering of electrons near the Fermi surface by the longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons is expected from basic theory because these phonons modulate electron density. We used inelastic neutron scattering on a large single crystal sample of optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ to show that low-energy LA phonons could couple to electronic density fluctuations only at small phonon w…
In the iron pnictides, the strong sensitivity of the iron magnetic moment to the arsenic position suggests a significant relationship between phonons and magnetism. We measured the phonon dispersion of several branches in the high temperature tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 using inelastic x-ray scattering on single-crystal samples. These measurements were compared to ab initio calculations of the phonons. Spin polarized calculations imposing the antiferromagnetic order present in the low temperature orthorhombic phase dramatically improve agreement between theory and experiment. This is discusse…
Inelastic x-ray scattering is used to investigate charge density wave (CDW) formation and the low-energy lattice dynamics of the underdoped high temperature superconductor ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.54. We find that, for a temperature ~1/3 of the CDW onset temperature (~155 K), the CDW order is static within the resolution of the experiment, that is the inverse lifetime is less than 0.3 meV. In the same temperature region, low-energy phonons near the ordering wavevector of the CDW show large increases in their linewidths. This contrasts with the usual behavior in CDW systems where the phonon anomalies…
We calculate the photoelectron escape depth in the high temperature superconductor Bi2212 by use of electron energy-loss spectroscopy data. We find that the escape depth is only 3 Ang. for photon energies typically used in angle resolved photoemission measurements. We then use this to estimate the number of inelastic secondaries, and find this to be quite small near the Fermi energy. This implies that the large background seen near the Fermi energy in photoemission measurements is of some other origin.
The recent findings about two distinct quasiparticle inelastic scattering rates in angle-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) experiments in overdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates superconductors have motivated many discussions related to the link between superconductivity, pseudogap, and transport properties in these materials. After computing dynamical self-energy corrections in the framework of the $t-J$ model the inelastic scattering rate was introduced as usual. Two distinct scattering rates were obtained showing the main features observed in ADMR experiments. Predictions for underdoped cuprates are…
In this paper we calculate ab initially the phonon dispersion relationship of the superconductor LaFeAsO and investigate a main property in the superconductor, the oxygen isotope effect. Based on this phonon dispersion relationship, we find the fact that an important reason of the oxygen isotope effect is connected with the phonon. This result agrees well with the experimental data where the power index of the oxygen isotope effect in the superconductor LaFeAsO is small.
Using the Eliashberg strong coupling theory with vertex correction, we calculate maps of transition temperatures (T$_{c}$) of electron-phonon superconductors in full parameter space. The maximums of transition temperatures for superconductors are predicted based on the maps and the criterion of instability of superconductivity. The strong vertex correction and high transition temperature are tightly correlated in superconductors. We predict that the maximum of T$_{c}$ of new iron-based superconductors will be close to 90(K).
We consider tunnel microrefrigerators at low temperature. There is a number of experimental studies performed on microrefrigeration in tunneling superconductor--normal metal (SN) structures. Related to these experiments, only the electron subsystem has been considered theoretically. Independently, the phonon deficit effect has been studied a while ago in superconductor-superconductor tunnel junctions. It can be regarded as a possible prototype scheme for superconducting microrefrigerators. We try to provide the missing link between experiments on the SN tunnel junction refrigerators and the th…
When quasiparticles in a BCS superconductor recombine into Cooper pairs, phonons are emitted within a narrow band of energies above the pairing energy at 2$Δ$. We show that a phonon bandgap restricting the escape of recombination phonons from a superconductor can increase the quasiparticle recombination lifetime by more than an order of magnitude. A phonon bandgap can be realized and matched to the recombination energy with a phononic crystal, a periodically-patterned dielectric membrane. We discuss in detail the non-equilibrium quasiparticle and phonon distributions that arise in a supercondu…
We report measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon densities of states in K0.8Fe1.6Se2 using inelastic neutron scattering technique. While cooling down to 150 K, a phonon peak splitting around 25 meV is observed and a new peak appears at 31 meV. The measurements support the recent Raman and infra-red measurements indicating a lowering of symmetry of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 upon cooling below 250 K. Ab-initio phonon calculations have been carried out for K0.8Fe1.6Se2 and KFe2Se2. The comparison of the phonon spectra as obtained from the magnetic as well as non magnetic calculations show pronou…
The formula frequently used to describe the c-axis infrared response of the coupled electron-phonon system of bilayer cuprate superconductors and providing important insights into the physics of these materials has been originally obtained at the level of the phenomenological multilayer model. Here we derive it using diagrammatic perturbation theory.
Using a Fermi-liquid-based theory we calculate the in-plane anisotropy of the spin susceptibility for hole-doped high-T_c cuprates. Employing the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model and a generalized RPA-type theory we consider anisotropic hopping matrix elements ($t_x \neq t_y$) and a mixing of d- and s-wave symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in order to describe orthorhombic superconductors. We compare our calculations with available inelastic neutron scattering data on untwinned YBa{2}Cu{3}O{7-δ} and find good agreement. Furthermore, we predict a strongly anisotropic in-plan…
We study the generation of coherent phonons in a superconductor by ultrafast optical pump pulses. The nonequilibrium dynamics of the coupled Bogoliubov quasiparticle-phonon system after excitation with the pump pulse is analyzed by means of the density-matrix formalism with the phonons treated at a full quantum kinetic level. For ultrashort excitation pulses, the superconductor exhibits a nonadiabatic behavior in which the superconducting order parameter oscillates. We find that in this nonadiabatic regime the generation of coherent phonons is resonantly enhanced when the frequency of the orde…
In Fe-As based superconductors magnetism and superconductivity show strong sensitivity to the lattice, suggesting a possibility of unconventional electron-phonon coupling. We investigated c-axis polarized phonons in doped and undoped BaFe2As2 by inelastic X-ray scattering. Phonon peak positions and linewidths did not vary significantly as a function of doping either by Co or by K. The linewidth of the Fe vibration shows unusual wavevector-dependence, which may be due to hybridization with in-plane modes. Comparison with the density functional theory shows significant difference for the energy …
