Learning to learn (L2L) trains a meta-learner to assist the learning of a task-specific base learner. Previously, it was shown that a meta-learner could learn the direct rules to update learner parameters; and that the learnt neural optimiser updated learners more rapidly than handcrafted gradient-descent methods. However, we demonstrate that previous neural optimisers were limited to update learners on one designated dataset. In order to address input-domain heterogeneity, we introduce Multi-Task Learning to Learn (MTL2L), a context aware neural optimiser which self-modifies its optimisation rules based on input data. We show that MTL2L is capable of updating learners to classify on data of an unseen input-domain at the meta-testing phase.
This paper presents a context-aware framework for feature selection and classification procedures to realize a fast and accurate audio event annotation and classification. The context-aware design starts with exploring feature extraction techniques to find an appropriate combination to select a set resulting in remarkable classification accuracy with minimal computational effort. The exploration for feature selection also embraces an investigation of audio Tempo representation, an advantageous feature extraction method missed by previous works in the environmental audio classification research…
Descent methods for deep networks are notoriously capricious: they require careful tuning of step size, momentum and weight decay, and which method will work best on a new benchmark is a priori unclear. To address this problem, this paper conducts a combined study of neural architecture and optimisation, leading to a new optimiser called Nero: the neuronal rotator. Nero trains reliably without momentum or weight decay, works in situations where Adam and SGD fail, and requires little to no learning rate tuning. Also, Nero's memory footprint is ~ square root that of Adam or LAMB. Nero combines t…

Context-aware recommender systems (CARSs) apply sensing and analysis of user context in order to provide personalized services. Adding context to a recommendation model is challenging, since the addition of context may increases both the dimensionality and sparsity of the model. Recent research has shown that modeling contextual information as a latent vector may address the sparsity and dimensionality challenges. We suggest a new latent modeling of sequential context by generating sequences of contextual information and reducing their contextual space to a compressed latent space. We train a l…
Context-awareness in smart mobile applications is a growing area of study, because of it's intelligence in the applications. In order to build context-aware intelligent applications, mining contextual behavioral rules of individual smartphone users utilizing their phone log data is the key. However, to mine these rules, a number of issues, such as the quality of smartphone data, understanding the relevancy of contexts, discretization of continuous contextual data, discovery of useful behavioral rules of individuals and their ordering, knowledge-based interactive post-mining for semantic unders…

Activity recognition in wearable computing faces two key challenges: i) activity characteristics may be context-dependent and change under different contexts or situations; ii) unknown contexts and activities may occur from time to time, requiring flexibility and adaptability of the algorithm. We develop a context-aware mixture of deep models termed the α-\b{eta} network coupled with uncertainty quantification (UQ) based upon maximum entropy to enhance human activity recognition performance. We improve accuracy and F score by 10% by identifying high-level contexts in a data-driven way to guide…

This paper formulates the problem of building a context-aware predictive model based on user diverse behavioral activities with smartphones. In the area of machine learning and data science, a tree-like model as that of decision tree is considered as one of the most popular classification techniques, which can be used to build a data-driven predictive model. The traditional decision tree model typically creates a number of leaf nodes as decision nodes that represent context-specific rigid decisions, and consequently may cause overfitting problem in behavior modeling. However, in many practical…
We propose an efficient Context-Aware clustering of Bandits (CAB) algorithm, which can capture collaborative effects. CAB can be easily deployed in a real-world recommendation system, where multi-armed bandits have been shown to perform well in particular with respect to the cold-start problem. CAB utilizes a context-aware clustering augmented by exploration-exploitation strategies. CAB dynamically clusters the users based on the content universe under consideration. We give a theoretical analysis in the standard stochastic multi-armed bandits setting. We show the efficiency of our approach on…
We propose a novel visual context-aware filter generation module which incorporates contextual information present in images into Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In contrast to traditional CNNs, we do not employ the same set of learned convolution filters for all input image instances. Our proposed input-conditioned convolution filters when combined with techniques inspired by Multi-instance learning and max-pooling, results in a transformation-invariant neural network. We investigated the performance of our proposed framework on three MNIST variations, which covers both rotation and sca…

Nowadays, mobile telephony interruptions in our daily life activities are common because of the inappropriate ringing notifications of incoming phone calls in different contexts. Such interruptions may impact on the work attention not only for the mobile phone owners but also the surrounding people. Decision tree is the most popular machine learning classification technique that is used in existing context-aware mobile intelligent interruption management (MIIM) model to overcome such issues. However, a single decision tree based context-aware model may cause overfitting problem and thus decrea…
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have been widely studied for graph data representation and learning. However, existing GNNs generally conduct context-aware learning on node feature representation only which usually ignores the learning of edge (weight) representation. In this paper, we propose a novel unified GNN model, named Context-aware Adaptive Graph Attention Network (CaGAT). CaGAT aims to learn a context-aware attention representation for each graph edge by further exploiting the context relationships among different edges. In particular, CaGAT conducts context-aware learning on both node f…

Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) aims at classifying unlabeled objects by leveraging auxiliary knowledge, such as semantic representations. A limitation of previous approaches is that only intrinsic properties of objects, e.g. their visual appearance, are taken into account while their context, e.g. the surrounding objects in the image, is ignored. Following the intuitive principle that objects tend to be found in certain contexts but not others, we propose a new and challenging approach, context-aware ZSL, that leverages semantic representations in a new way to model the conditional likelihood of an …

In a dynamic heterogeneous environment, such as pervasive and ubiquitous computing, context-aware adaptation is a key concept to meet the varying requirements of different users. Connectivity is an important context source that can be utilized for optimal management of diverse networking resources. Application QoS (Quality of service) is another important issue that should be taken into consideration for design of a context-aware system. This paper presents connectivity from the view point of context awareness, identifies various relevant raw connectivity contexts, and discusses how high-level…

Multi-objective combinatorial optimization (MOCO) problems are prevalent in various real-world applications. Most existing neural MOCO methods rely on problem decomposition to transform an MOCO problem into a series of singe-objective combinatorial optimization (SOCO) problems and train attention models based on a single-step and deterministic greedy rollout. However, inappropriate decomposition and undesirable short-sighted behaviors of previous methods tend to induce a decline in diversity. To address the above limitation, we design a Context-aware Diversity Enhancement algorithm named CDE, …
This paper addresses the task of contextual translation using multi-segment models. Specifically we show that increasing model capacity further pushes the limits of this approach and that deeper models are more suited to capture context dependencies. Furthermore, improvements observed with larger models can be transferred to smaller models using knowledge distillation. Our experiments show that this approach achieves competitive performance across several languages and benchmarks, without additional language-specific tuning and task specific architectures.

Context-aware machine translation models are designed to leverage contextual information, but often fail to do so. As a result, they inaccurately disambiguate pronouns and polysemous words that require context for resolution. In this paper, we ask several questions: What contexts do human translators use to resolve ambiguous words? Are models paying large amounts of attention to the same context? What if we explicitly train them to do so? To answer these questions, we introduce SCAT (Supporting Context for Ambiguous Translations), a new English-French dataset comprising supporting context word…

Knowledge graph embedding (KGE) models learn to project symbolic entities and relations into a continuous vector space based on the observed triplets. However, existing KGE models cannot make a proper trade-off between the graph context and the model complexity, which makes them still far from satisfactory. In this paper, we propose a lightweight framework named LightCAKE for context-aware KGE. LightCAKE explicitly models the graph context without introducing redundant trainable parameters, and uses an iterative aggregation strategy to integrate the context information into the entity/relation…

This work introduces a data-driven control approach for stabilizing high-dimensional dynamical systems from scarce data. The proposed context-aware controller inference approach is based on the observation that controllers need to act locally only on the unstable dynamics to stabilize systems. This means it is sufficient to learn the unstable dynamics alone, which are typically confined to much lower dimensional spaces than the high-dimensional state spaces of all system dynamics and thus few data samples are sufficient to identify them. Numerical experiments demonstrate that context-aware con…
