Depth information has proven to be a useful cue in the semantic segmentation of RGB-D images for providing a geometric counterpart to the RGB representation. Most existing works simply assume that depth measurements are accurate and well-aligned with the RGB pixels and models the problem as a cross-modal feature fusion to obtain better feature representations to achieve more accurate segmentation. This, however, may not lead to satisfactory results as actual depth data are generally noisy, which might worsen the accuracy as the networks go deeper.
In this paper, we propose a unified and efficient Cross-modality Guided Encoder to not only effectively recalibrate RGB feature responses, but also to distill accurate depth information via multiple stages and aggregate the two recalibrated representations alternatively. The key of the proposed architecture is a novel Separation-and-Aggregation Gating operation that jointly filters and recalibrates both representations before cross-modality aggregation. Meanwhile, a Bi-direction Multi-step Propagation strategy is introduced, on the one hand, to help to propagate and fuse information between the two modalities, and on the other hand, to preserve their specificity along the long-term propagation process. Besides, our proposed encoder can be easily injected into the previous encoder-decoder structures to boost their performance on RGB-D semantic segmentation. Our model outperforms state-of-the-arts consistently on both in-door and out-door challenging datasets. Code of this work is available at https://charlescxk.github.io/

Focusing on the issue of how to effectively capture and utilize cross-modality information in RGB-D salient object detection (SOD) task, we present a convolutional neural network (CNN) model, named CIR-Net, based on the novel cross-modality interaction and refinement. For the cross-modality interaction, 1) a progressive attention guided integration unit is proposed to sufficiently integrate RGB-D feature representations in the encoder stage, and 2) a convergence aggregation structure is proposed, which flows the RGB and depth decoding features into the corresponding RGB-D decoding streams via …
Depth information has been proved beneficial in RGB-D salient object detection (SOD). However, depth maps obtained often suffer from low quality and inaccuracy. Most existing RGB-D SOD models have no cross-modal interactions or only have unidirectional interactions from depth to RGB in their encoder stages, which may lead to inaccurate encoder features when facing low quality depth. To address this limitation, we propose to conduct progressive bi-directional interactions as early in the encoder stage, yielding a novel bi-directional transfer-and-selection network named BTS-Net, which adopts a …

The popularity and promotion of depth maps have brought new vigor and vitality into salient object detection (SOD), and a mass of RGB-D SOD algorithms have been proposed, mainly concentrating on how to better integrate cross-modality features from RGB image and depth map. For the cross-modality interaction in feature encoder, existing methods either indiscriminately treat RGB and depth modalities, or only habitually utilize depth cues as auxiliary information of the RGB branch. Different from them, we reconsider the status of two modalities and propose a novel Cross-modality Discrepant Interac…

We present an effective method to progressively integrate and refine the cross-modality complementarities for RGB-D salient object detection (SOD). The proposed network mainly solves two challenging issues: 1) how to effectively integrate the complementary information from RGB image and its corresponding depth map, and 2) how to adaptively select more saliency-related features. First, we propose a cross-modality feature modulation (cmFM) module to enhance feature representations by taking the depth features as prior, which models the complementary relations of RGB-D data. Second, we propose an…

Recent advances in depth imaging sensors provide easy access to the synchronized depth with color, called RGB-D image. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised method for indoor RGB-D image segmentation and analysis. We consider a statistical image generation model based on the color and geometry of the scene. Our method consists of a joint color-spatial-directional clustering method followed by a statistical planar region merging method. We evaluate our method on the NYU depth database and compare it with existing unsupervised RGB-D segmentation methods. Results show that, it is comparable w…
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are good at extracting contexture features within certain receptive fields, while transformers can model the global long-range dependency features. By absorbing the advantage of transformer and the merit of CNN, Swin Transformer shows strong feature representation ability. Based on it, we propose a cross-modality fusion model SwinNet for RGB-D and RGB-T salient object detection. It is driven by Swin Transformer to extract the hierarchical features, boosted by attention mechanism to bridge the gap between two modalities, and guided by edge information to sha…

Recent RGBD-based models for saliency detection have attracted research attention. The depth clues such as boundary clues, surface normal, shape attribute, etc., contribute to the identification of salient objects with complicated scenarios. However, most RGBD networks require multi-modalities from the input side and feed them separately through a two-stream design, which inevitably results in extra costs on depth sensors and computation. To tackle these inconveniences, we present in this paper a novel fusion design named modality-guided subnetwork (MGSnet). It has the following superior desig…
Salient Object Detection is the task of predicting the human attended region in a given scene. Fusing depth information has been proven effective in this task. The main challenge of this problem is how to aggregate the complementary information from RGB modality and depth modality. However, conventional deep models heavily rely on CNN feature extractors, and the long-range contextual dependencies are usually ignored. In this work, we propose Dual Swin-Transformer based Mutual Interactive Network. We adopt Swin-Transformer as the feature extractor for both RGB and depth modality to model the lo…

In this work, we propose to utilize Convolutional Neural Networks to boost the performance of depth-induced salient object detection by capturing the high-level representative features for depth modality. We formulate the depth-induced saliency detection as a CNN-based cross-modal transfer problem to bridge the gap between the "data-hungry" nature of CNNs and the unavailability of sufficient labeled training data in depth modality. In the proposed approach, we leverage the auxiliary data from the source modality effectively by training the RGB saliency detection network to obtain the task-spec…
The goal of this work is to present a systematic solution for RGB-D salient object detection, which addresses the following three aspects with a unified framework: modal-specific representation learning, complementary cue selection and cross-modal complement fusion. To learn discriminative modal-specific features, we propose a hierarchical cross-modal distillation scheme, in which the well-learned source modality provides supervisory signals to facilitate the learning process for the new modality. To better extract the complementary cues, we formulate a residual function to incorporate complem…

In recent years, RGB-T salient object detection (SOD) has attracted continuous attention, which makes it possible to identify salient objects in environments such as low light by introducing thermal image. However, most of the existing RGB-T SOD models focus on how to perform cross-modality feature fusion, ignoring whether thermal image is really always matter in SOD task. Starting from the definition and nature of this task, this paper rethinks the connotation of thermal modality, and proposes a network named TNet to solve the RGB-T SOD task. In this paper, we introduce a global illumination …
Scene depth information can help visual information for more accurate semantic segmentation. However, how to effectively integrate multi-modality information into representative features is still an open problem. Most of the existing work uses DCNNs to implicitly fuse multi-modality information. But as the network deepens, some critical distinguishing features may be lost, which reduces the segmentation performance. This work proposes a unified and efficient feature selectionand-fusion network (FSFNet), which contains a symmetric cross-modality residual fusion module used for explicit fusion o…

RGB-D semantic segmentation methods conventionally use two independent encoders to extract features from the RGB and depth data. However, there lacks an effective fusion mechanism to bridge the encoders, for the purpose of fully exploiting the complementary information from multiple modalities. This paper proposes a novel bottom-up interactive fusion structure to model the interdependencies between the encoders. The structure introduces an interaction stream to interconnect the encoders. The interaction stream not only progressively aggregates modality-specific features from the encoders but a…

Salient object detection (SOD) on RGB and depth images has attracted more and more research interests, due to its effectiveness and the fact that depth cues can now be conveniently captured. Existing RGB-D SOD models usually adopt different fusion strategies to learn a shared representation from the two modalities (\ie, RGB and depth), while few methods explicitly consider how to preserve modality-specific characteristics. In this study, we propose a novel framework, termed SPNet} (Specificity-preserving network), which benefits SOD performance by exploring both the shared information and moda…

RGB-D salient object detection aims to identify the most visually distinctive objects in a pair of color and depth images. Based upon an observation that most of the salient objects may stand out at least in one modality, this paper proposes an adaptive fusion scheme to fuse saliency predictions generated from two modalities. Specifically, we design a two-streamed convolutional neural network (CNN), each of which extracts features and predicts a saliency map from either RGB or depth modality. Then, a saliency fusion module learns a switch map that is used to adaptively fuse the predicted salie…
Integrating multispectral data in object detection, especially visible and infrared images, has received great attention in recent years. Since visible (RGB) and infrared (IR) images can provide complementary information to handle light variations, the paired images are used in many fields, such as multispectral pedestrian detection, RGB-IR crowd counting and RGB-IR salient object detection. Compared with natural RGB-IR images, we find detection in aerial RGB-IR images suffers from cross-modal weakly misalignment problems, which are manifested in the position, size and angle deviations of the …
The High-Resolution Transformer (HRFormer) can maintain high-resolution representation and share global receptive fields. It is friendly towards salient object detection (SOD) in which the input and output have the same resolution. However, two critical problems need to be solved for two-modality SOD. One problem is two-modality fusion. The other problem is the HRFormer output's fusion. To address the first problem, a supplementary modality is injected into the primary modality by using global optimization and an attention mechanism to select and purify the modality at the input level. To solv…

RGB-D SOD uses depth information to handle challenging scenes and obtain high-quality saliency maps. Existing state-of-the-art RGB-D saliency detection methods overwhelmingly rely on the strategy of directly fusing depth information. Although these methods improve the accuracy of saliency prediction through various cross-modality fusion strategies, misinformation provided by some poor-quality depth images can affect the saliency prediction result. To address this issue, a novel RGB-D salient object detection model (SiaTrans) is proposed in this paper, which allows training on depth image quali…
