Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) model long-range dependencies by deeply stacking convolution operations with small window sizes, which makes the optimizations difficult. This paper presents region-based non-local (RNL) operations as a family of self-attention mechanisms, which can directly capture long-range dependencies without using a deep stack of local operations. Given an intermediate feature map, our method recalibrates the feature at a position by aggregating the information from the neighboring regions of all positions. By combining a channel attention module with the proposed RNL, we design an attention chain, which can be integrated into the off-the-shelf CNNs for end-to-end training. We evaluate our method on two video classification benchmarks. The experimental results of our method outperform other attention mechanisms, and we achieve state-of-the-art performance on the Something-Something V1 dataset.
Leveraging both visual frames and audio has been experimentally proven effective to improve large-scale video classification. Previous research on video classification mainly focuses on the analysis of visual content among extracted video frames and their temporal feature aggregation. In contrast, multimodal data fusion is achieved by simple operators like average and concatenation. Inspired by the success of bilinear pooling in the visual and language fusion, we introduce multi-modal factorized bilinear pooling (MFB) to fuse visual and audio representations. We combine MFB with different vide…

The goal of few-shot video classification is to learn a classification model with good generalization ability when trained with only a few labeled videos. However, it is difficult to learn discriminative feature representations for videos in such a setting. In this paper, we propose Temporal Alignment Prediction (TAP) based on sequence similarity learning for few-shot video classification. In order to obtain the similarity of a pair of videos, we predict the alignment scores between all pairs of temporal positions in the two videos with the temporal alignment prediction function. Besides, the …
YouTube-8M is the largest video dataset for multi-label video classification. In order to tackle the multi-label classification on this challenging dataset, it is necessary to solve several issues such as temporal modeling of videos, label imbalances, and correlations between labels. We develop a deep neural network model, which consists of four components: the frame encoder, the classification layer, the label processing layer, and the loss function. We introduce our newly proposed methods and discusses how existing models operate in the YouTube-8M Classification Task, what insights they have…
Recently, video classification attracts intensive research efforts. However, most existing works are based on framelevel visual features, which might fail to model the temporal information, e.g. characteristics accumulated along time. In order to capture video temporal information, we propose to analyse features in frequency domain transformed by discrete Fourier transform (DFT features). Frame-level features are firstly extract by a pre-trained deep convolutional neural network (CNN). Then, time domain features are transformed and interpolated into DFT features. CNN and DFT features are furth…

We propose a semi-supervised learning approach for video classification, VideoSSL, using convolutional neural networks (CNN). Like other computer vision tasks, existing supervised video classification methods demand a large amount of labeled data to attain good performance. However, annotation of a large dataset is expensive and time consuming. To minimize the dependence on a large annotated dataset, our proposed semi-supervised method trains from a small number of labeled examples and exploits two regulatory signals from unlabeled data. The first signal is the pseudo-labels of unlabeled examp…
Current state-of-the-art human activity recognition is focused on the classification of temporally trimmed videos in which only one action occurs per frame. We propose a simple, yet effective, method for the temporal detection of activities in temporally untrimmed videos with the help of untrimmed classification. Firstly, our model predicts the top k labels for each untrimmed video by analysing global video-level features. Secondly, frame-level binary classification is combined with dynamic programming to generate the temporally trimmed activity proposals. Finally, each proposal is assigned a …
The extraction of text information in videos serves as a critical step towards semantic understanding of videos. It usually involved in two steps: (1) text recognition and (2) text classification. To localize texts in videos, we can resort to large numbers of text recognition methods based on OCR technology. However, to our knowledge, there is no existing work focused on the second step of video text classification, which will limit the guidance to downstream tasks such as video indexing and browsing. In this paper, we are the first to address this new task of video text classification by fusi…
The emergence of depth imaging technologies like the Microsoft Kinect has renewed interest in computational methods for gesture classification based on videos. For several years now, researchers have used the Bag-of-Features (BoF) as a primary method for generation of feature vectors from video data for recognition of gestures. However, the BoF method is a coarse representation of the information in a video, which often leads to poor similarity measures between videos. Besides, when features extracted from different spatio-temporal locations in the video are pooled to create histogram vectors …

Deep neural networks are likely to fail when the test data is corrupted in real-world deployment (e.g., blur, weather, etc.). Test-time optimization is an effective way that adapts models to generalize to corrupted data during testing, which has been shown in the image domain. However, the techniques for improving video classification corruption robustness remain few. In this work, we propose a Temporal Coherent Test-time Optimization framework (TeCo) to utilize spatio-temporal information in test-time optimization for robust video classification. Appearance and motion are two key components to depict and characterize the video content. Currently, the two-stream models have achieved state-of-the-art performances on video classification. However, extracting motion information, specifically in the form of optical flow features, is extremely computationally expensive, especially for large-scale video classification. In this paper, we propose a motion hallucination network, namely MoNet, to imagine the optical flow features from the appearance features, with no reliance on the optical flow computation. Specifically, MoNet models the tempora…
State-of-the-art video action classifiers often suffer from overfitting. They tend to be biased towards specific objects and scene cues, rather than the foreground action content, leading to sub-optimal generalization performances. Recent data augmentation strategies have been reported to address the overfitting problems in static image classifiers. Despite the effectiveness on the static image classifiers, data augmentation has rarely been studied for videos. For the first time in the field, we systematically analyze the efficacy of various data augmentation strategies on the video classifica…

Video understanding has attracted much research attention especially since the recent availability of large-scale video benchmarks. In this paper, we address the problem of multi-label video classification. We first observe that there exists a significant knowledge gap between how machines and humans learn. That is, while current machine learning approaches including deep neural networks largely focus on the representations of the given data, humans often look beyond the data at hand and leverage external knowledge to make better decisions. Towards narrowing the gap, we propose to incorporate …
Videos are a rich source of high-dimensional structured data, with a wide range of interacting components at varying levels of granularity. Moreover, we introduce a few-shot video classification framework that leverages the above appearance and temporal similarity scores across multiple steps, namely prototype-based training and…
Over the past few years, various tasks involving videos such as classification, description, summarization and question answering have received a lot of attention. Current models for these tasks compute an encoding of the video by treating it as a sequence of images and going over every image in the sequence. Specifically, we first train a teacher network which looks at all the frames in a video and compu…

Second, it has limited ability to capture details and local context information for video data. Third, it lacks explicit semantic guidance that greatly decrease the classification performance. In this paper, we proposed a new two-stream…

We investigate video classification via a two-stream convolutional neural network (CNN) design that directly ingests information extracted from compressed video bitstreams. Our approach begins with the observation that all modern video codecs divide the input frames into macroblocks (MBs). We demonstrate that selective access to MB motion vector (MV) information within compressed video bitstreams can also provide for selective, motion-adaptive, MB pixel decoding (a.k.a., MB texture decoding). This in turn allows for the derivation of spatio-temporal video activity regions at extremely high spe…

In multi-person videos, especially team sport videos, a semantic event is usually represented as a confrontation between two teams of players, which can be represented as collective motion. In broadcast basketball videos, specific camera motions are used to present specific events. Therefore, a semantic event in broadcast basketball videos is closely related to both the global motion (camera motion) and the collective motion. A semantic event in basketball videos can be generally divided into three stages: pre-event, event occurrence (event-occ), and post-event. In this paper, we propose an on…

Most existing state-of-the-art video classification methods assume that the training data obey a uniform distribution. However, video data in the real world typically exhibit an imbalanced long-tailed class distribution, resulting in a model bias towards head class and relatively low performance on tail class. While the current long-tailed classification methods usually focus on image classification, adapting it to video data is not a trivial extension. We propose an end-to-end multi-expert distribution calibration method to address these challenges based on two-level distribution information.…

Video classification is highly important with wide applications, such as video search and intelligent surveillance. Video naturally consists of static and motion information, which can be represented by frame and optical flow. Recently, researchers generally adopt the deep networks to capture the static and motion information \textbf{\emph{separately}}, which mainly has two limitations: (1) Ignoring the coexistence relationship between spatial and temporal attention, while they should be jointly modelled as the spatial and temporal evolutions of video, thus discriminative video features can be…

E.g. recurrent neural network based methods compute a hidden state for every frame of the video using a recurrent weight matrix. Similarly, cluster-and-aggregate based methods such as NetVLAD, have a learnable clustering matrix which is used to assign soft-clusters to every frame in the video. Since these models look at every…
