The generation of light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) from a free-electron laser at short wavelengths has attracted considerable attention as a key resource in several fields and applications. Herein, we present a facile method to generate intense and coherent OAM beams from an X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO). We use the Bragg crystal as both a reflector as well as mode selector, in both longitudinal and transverse modes, which enables the specified resonance deviation that maximizes the single-pass gain of the high-order OAM mode of interest. This can allow the amplification and saturation of OAM beams in a typical XFELO configuration. Our results show that 150~$μ$J fully coherent, hard-X-ray pulses carrying first-order OAM can be generated without utilizing any external elements such as optical mode converters or elliptically polarized undulators. This simple and straightforward method can pave the way for the further customization of the transverse-mode operation of X-ray free-electron laser oscillators.
Harmonic lasing of low-gain free electron laser oscillators has been experimentally demonstrated in the terahertz and infrared regions. Recently, the low-gain oscillator has been reconsidered as a promising candidate for hard x-ray free electron lasers, through the use of high reflectivity, high resolution x-ray crystals. In this letter, it is proposed to utilize a crystal-based cavity resonant at a higher harmonic of the undulator radiation, together with phase shifting, to enable harmonic lasing of the x-ray free electron laser oscillator, and hence allow the generation of hard x-ray radiati…
The low-gain free-electron laser (FEL) oscillators are cutting-edge tools to produce fully coherent radiation in the spectral region from terahertz to vacuum ultraviolet, and potentially in hard X-ray. In this paper, it is proposed to utilize an FEL oscillator with multi-stage undulators to enable gain cascading in a single-pass, making it possible to achieve shorter single pulse lengths, higher peak power, and even higher pulse energy than classical FEL oscillator. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations in the infrared and hard X-ray regions show that our proposal is effective.
The lattice of laser-electron storage ring with controlled momentum compaction factor dedicated to generation of intense X-rays under Compton scattering is described. In such storage ring one can achieve the large energy acceptance and keep the long-term stable motion of electron beam with large energy spread. The intensity of X-rays may be very stable due to using of electron beam with steady-state parameters for Compton scattering. Parameters of the storage ring, electron beam and X-rays obtained by electron beam dynamics simulation involving Compton scattering are presented.
We show that a strong laser pulse combined with a strong x-ray pulse can be employed in a detection scheme for characterizing high-energy $γ$-ray pulses down to the zeptosecond timescale. The scheme employs streak imaging technique built upon the high-energy process of electron-positron pair production in vacuum through the collision of a test pulse with intense laser pulses. The role of quantum radiation reaction in multiphoton Compton scattering process and limitations imposed by it on the detection scheme are examined.
We study incoherent Thomson scattering between an ultrashort laser pulse and an electron beam accelerated from a laser wakefield. The energy chirp effects of the accelerated electron beam on the final radiation spectrum bandwidth are investigated. It is found that the scattered X-ray radiation has the minimum spectrum width and highest intensity as electrons are accelerated up to around the dephasing point. Furthermore, it is proposed the electron acceleration process inside the wakefield can be studied by use of $90^\circ$ Thomson scattering. The dephasing position and beam energy chirp can b…
A setup of a unique x-ray source is put forward employing a relativistic electron beam interacting with two counter-propagating laser pulses in the nonlinear few-photon regime. In contrast to Compton scattering sources, the envisaged x-ray source exhibits an extremely narrow relative bandwidth of the order of $10^{-4}$, comparable with an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). The brilliance of the x-rays can be an order of magnitude higher than that of a state-of-the-art Compton source. By tuning the laser intensities and the electron energy, one can realize either a single peak or a comb-like x-r…
We propose a scheme to generate carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) stabilized few-cycle optical pulses from a free-electron laser oscillator. The CEP stabilization is realized by continuous injection of CEP-stabilized seed pulses from an external laser to the FEL oscillator whose cavity length is perfectly synchronized to the electron bunch repetition. Such CEP-stabilized few-cycle FEL pulses will be an efficient driver for exploring high-harmonic generation at energies 1-10~keV for attosecond and zeptosecond science, broad-band x-ray optical frequency combs and coherent control of chemical reaction…

A simplified theoretical model for free-electron laser oscillator (FELO) simulation which reserves the main physics is proposed. In stead of using traditional macro particles sampling method, the theoretical model takes advantages of low gain theory to calculate the optical power single-pass gain in the undulator analytically, and some reasonable approximations are made to simplify the calculation of power growth in the cavity. The theoretical analysis of single-pass gain, power growth, time-dependent laser profile evolution and cavity desynchronism are accomplished more efficiently. We presen…
By tailoring the wavefront of the laser pulse used in a laser-wakefield accelerator, we show that the properties of the x-rays produced due to the electron beam's betatron oscillations in the plasma can be controlled. By creating a wavefront with coma, we find that the critical energy of the synchrotron-like x-ray spectrum can be significantly increased. The coma does not substantially change the energy of the electron beam, but does increase its divergence and produces an energy-dependent exit angle, indicating that changes in the x-ray spectrum are due to an increase in the electron beam's o…
We analyze the behavior of Free Electron Laser (FEL) oscillators operating in the deep saturated regime and point out the formation of sub-peaks of the optical pulse. They are very stable configurations, having a width corresponding to a coherence length. We speculate on the physical mechanisms underlying their growth and attempt an identification with FEL mode locked structures associated with Super Modes. Their impact on the intra-cavity nonlinear harmonic generation is also discussed along with the possibility of exploiting them as cavity out-coupler.
Oscillators are at the heart of optical lasers, providing stable transform limited pulses. In contrast, X-ray free electron lasers use self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE), resulting in large stochastic intensity and spectral fluctuations. Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of the $Kα_1$ line has been recently observed for Ne gas, Cu compounds and Mn solutions at the LCLS and SACLA X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs), using an X-ray SASE pulse as a pump to create population inversion. Here we describe the physics and realization of an X-ray laser oscillator (XLO) based on periodically p…
Relativistic interaction of short-pulse lasers with underdense plasmas has recently led to the emergence of a novel generation of femtosecond x-ray sources. Based on radiation from electrons accelerated in plasma, these sources have the common properties to be compact and to deliver collimated, incoherent and femtosecond radiation. In this article we review, within a unified formalism, the betatron radiation of trapped and accelerated electrons in the so-called bubble regime, the synchrotron radiation of laser-accelerated electrons in usual meter-scale undulators, the nonlinear Thomson scatter…
We reconstruct spectra of secondary x-rays generated from a 500 MeV - 2 GeV laser plasma electron accelerator. A compact (7.5 $\times$ 7.5 $\times$ 15 cm), modular x-ray calorimeter made of alternating layers of absorbing materials and imaging plates records the single-shot x-ray depth-energy distribution. X-rays range from few-MeV inverse Compton scattered x-rays to $\sim$100 MeV average bremsstrahlung energies and are characterized individually by the same calorimeter detector. Geant4 simulations of energy deposition from mono-energetic x-rays in the stack generate an energy-vs-depth respons…
As part of the positron source R&D for future $e^+-e^-$ colliders and Compton based compact light sources, a high finesse non-planar four-mirror Fabry-Perot cavity has recently been installed at the ATF (KEK, Tsukuba, Japan). The first measurements of the gamma ray flux produced with a such cavity using a pulsed laser is presented here. We demonstrate the production of a flux of 2.7 $\pm$ 0.2 gamma rays per bunch crossing ($\sim3\times10^6$ gammas per second) during the commissioning.

A numerical example utilizing the parameters of the Shanghai High-Repetition-Rate XFEL and Extreme Light Facility (SHINE) is presented to demonstrate the generation of polarization controllable, fully coherent Hard X-ray pulses with 99.9% polarization degree …
The emission of multi-MeV ($γ$-ray) photons from the interaction of a high-powered laser pulse with a dense plasma target is studied using particle-in-cell simulations. A new set of diagnostic techniques is presented and applied to analyze the intense field and ultra-relativistic electrons. Such methods elucidate the dominant processes responsible for efficient laser-to-$γ$ energy conversion, which include nonlinear Compton scattering and magneto-bremsstrahlung radiation, and provide a clear picture of the interaction on a microscopic level. We identify regions in the plasma target of high pho…
In a series of experiments at the Texas Petawatt Laser (TPW) in Austin, TX, we have used attenuation spectrometers, dosimeters, and a new Forward Compton Electron Spectrometer (FCES) to measure and characterize the angular distribution, fluence, and energy spectrum of the X-rays and gamma rays produced by the TPW striking multi-millimeter thick gold targets. Our results represent the first such measurements at laser intensities > 10 21 W*cm-2 and pulse durations < 150 fs. We obtain a maximum yield of X-ray and gamma ray energy with respect to laser energy of 4% and a mean yield of 2%. We futhe…
Fine time-resolved analysis of matter - i.e. spectroscopy and photon scattering - in the linear response regime requires a fs-scale pulsed, high repetition rate, fully coherent X-ray source. A seeded Free-Electron Laser (FEL) driven by a Super-Conducting Linac, generating $10^{8}$-$10^{10}$ coherent photons at 2-5 keV with abou 0.5 MHz of repetition rate, can address this need. The seeding scheme proposed is the Echo-Enabled Harmonic Generation, alimented by a FEL Oscillator working at 13.6 nm with a cavity based on Mo-Si mirrors. The whole chain of the X-ray generation is here described by me…
X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) is expected to be a cutting edge tool for fully coherent X-ray laser generation, and undulator taper technique is well-known for considerably increasing the efficiency of free-electron lasers (FELs). In order to combine the advantages of these two schemes, FEL amplifier seeded by XFELO is proposed by simply using a chirped electron beam. With the right choice of the beam parameters, the bunch tail is within the gain bandwidth of XFELO, and lase to saturation, which will be served as a seeding for further amplification. Meanwhile, the bunch head whic…
We generate inverse Compton scattered X-rays in both linear and nonlinear regimes with a 250 MeV laser wakefield electron accelerator and plasma mirror by retro-reflecting the unused drive laser light to scatter from the accelerated electrons. We characterize the X-rays using a CsI(Tl) voxelated scintillator that measures their total energy and divergence as a function of plasma mirror distance from the accelerator exit. At each plasma mirror position, these X-ray properties are correlated with the measured fluence and inferred intensity of the laser pulse after driving the accelerator to dete…
The X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) has recently been reconsidered a promising candidate for producing high-brightness, fully coherent pulses in the hard X-ray regime. This letter proposes a gain-guided XFELO scheme, avoiding the external focusing elements required for conventional configuration. Self-consistent theoretical analysis and three-dimensional numerical simulation results verify that the X-ray transverse mode in such an "unstable" cavity is stable and robust due to electron beam gain-guiding. This scheme is capable of generating 14.3 keV photons of FEL radiation with pe…

Modern electron storage rings produce bright X-rays via spontaneous synchrotron emission, which is useful for a variety of scientific applications. The X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) has the potential to amplify this output, both in terms of peak power and photon coherence. However, even current 4th generation storage rings (4GSRs) lack the requisite electron beam brightness to drive the XFELO due to its electron energy spread. The transverse gradient undulator (TGU) can overcome this issue, thus providing a practical means to couple the 4GSR to the XFELO. In this study, we first…
The operation of an inverse-Compton scattering source of x-rays or gamma-rays requires the precision alignment and synchronization of highly focused electron bunches and laser pulses at the collision point. The arrival times of electron and laser pulses must be synchronized with picosecond precision. We have developed an RF synchronization technique that reduces the initial timing uncertainty from 350 ps to less than 2 ps, greatly reducing the parameter space to be optimized while commissioning the x-ray source. We describe the technique and present measurements of its performance.
Cavity-based x-ray free-electron lasers (CBXFEL) will allow use of optical cavity feedback to support generation of fully coherent x-rays of high brilliance and stability by electrons in undulators. CBXFEL optical cavities comprise Bragg-reflecting flat crystal mirrors, which ensure x-rays circulation on a closed orbit, and x-ray refractive lenses, which stabilize the orbit and refocus the x-rays back on the electrons in the undulator. Depending on the cavity design, there are tens of degrees of freedom of the optical elements, which can never be perfectly aligned. Here, we study signatures of…
We show that electron betatron resonance acceleration by an ultra-intense ultra-short laser pulse in a near critical density plasma works as a high-brightness gamma-ray source. Compared with laser plasma X-ray sources in under-dense plasma, near critical density plasma provides three benefits for electron radiation: more radiation electrons, larger transverse amplitude, and higher betatron oscillation frequency. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that, by using a 7.4J laser pulse, 8.3mJ radiation with critical photon energy 1MeV is emitted. The critical photon energy $E_c$ inc…
X-ray free electron laser oscillators (XFELO) is future light source to produce fully coherent hard X-ray pulses. The X-rays circulate in an optical cavity built from multiple Bragg reflecting mirrors, which has a high reflectance in a bandwidth of ten meV level. The X-ray crystal mirrors exposed to intense X-ray beams in the cavity are subjects to thermal deformations that shift and distort the Bragg reflection. Therefore, the stability of the XFELO operation relies on the abilities of mirrors to preserve the Bragg reflection under such heat load. A new approach was used to analyze the heat l…

Such lenses were stacked together to form a standard compound refractive lens (CRL). Due to the superior physical properties of the material, diamond CRLs are enabling and indispensable wavefront-preserving primary focusing optics for x-ray free-electron lasers and the next-ge…
