Although character-based models using lexicon have achieved promising results for Chinese named entity recognition (NER) task, some lexical words would introduce erroneous information due to wrongly matched words. Existing researches proposed many strategies to integrate lexicon knowledge. However, they performed with simple first-order lexicon knowledge, which provided insufficient word information and still faced the challenge of matched word boundary conflicts; or explored the lexicon knowledge with graph where higher-order information introducing negative words may disturb the identification. To alleviate the above limitations, we present new insight into second-order lexicon knowledge (SLK) of each character in the sentence to provide more lexical word information including semantic and word boundary features. Based on these, we propose a SLK-based model with a novel strategy to integrate the above lexicon knowledge. The proposed model can exploit more discernible lexical words information with the help of global context. Experimental results on three public datasets demonstrate the validity of SLK. The proposed model achieves more excellent performance than the state-of-the-art comparison methods.

Recently, many works have tried to augment the performance of Chinese named entity recognition (NER) using word lexicons. As a representative, Lattice-LSTM (Zhang and Yang, 2018) has achieved new benchmark results on several public Chinese NER datasets. However, Lattice-LSTM has a complex model architecture. This limits its application in many industrial areas where real-time NER responses are needed. In this work, we propose a simple but effective method for incorporating the word lexicon into the character representations. This method avoids designing a complicated sequence modeling architec…
In this work, we represent Lex-BERT, which incorporates the lexicon information into Chinese BERT for named entity recognition (NER) tasks in a natural manner. Instead of using word embeddings and a newly designed transformer layer as in FLAT, we identify the boundary of words in the sentences using special tokens, and the modified sentence will be encoded directly by BERT. Our model does not introduce any new parameters and are more efficient than FLAT. In addition, we do not require any word embeddings accompanying the lexicon collection. Experiments on Ontonotes and ZhCrossNER show that our…
Inspired by a concept of content-addressable retrieval from cognitive science, we propose a novel fragment-based model augmented with a lexicon-based memory for Chinese NER, in which both the character-level and word-level features are combined to generate better feature representations for possible name candidates. It is observed that locating the boundary information of entity names is useful in order to classify them into pre-defined categories. Position-dependent features, including prefix and suffix are introduced for NER in the form of distributed representation. The lexicon-based memory…

Named entity recognition (NER) in Chinese is essential but difficult because of the lack of natural delimiters. Therefore, Chinese Word Segmentation (CWS) is usually considered as the first step for Chinese NER. However, models based on word-level embeddings and lexicon features often suffer from segmentation errors and out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words. In this paper, we investigate a Convolutional Attention Network called CAN for Chinese NER, which consists of a character-based convolutional neural network (CNN) with local-attention layer and a gated recurrent unit (GRU) with global self-attenti…
Chinese NER is a difficult undertaking due to the ambiguity of Chinese characters and the absence of word boundaries. Previous work on Chinese NER focus on lexicon-based methods to introduce boundary information and reduce out-of-vocabulary (OOV) cases during prediction. However, it is expensive to obtain and dynamically maintain high-quality lexicons in specific domains, which motivates us to utilize more general knowledge resources, e.g., search engines. In this paper, we propose TURNER: The Uncertainty-based Retrieval framework for Chinese NER. The idea behind TURNER is to imitate human beh…

We investigate a lattice-structured LSTM model for Chinese NER, which encodes a sequence of input characters as well as all potential words that match a lexicon. Compared with character-based methods, our model explicitly leverages word and word sequence information. Compared with word-based methods, lattice LSTM does not suffer from segmentation errors. Gated recurrent cells allow our model to choose the most relevant characters and words from a sentence for better NER results. Experiments on various datasets show that lattice LSTM outperforms both word-based and character-based LSTM baseline…
Recently, the character-word lattice structure has been proved to be effective for Chinese named entity recognition (NER) by incorporating the word information. However, since the lattice structure is complex and dynamic, most existing lattice-based models are hard to fully utilize the parallel computation of GPUs and usually have a low inference-speed. In this paper, we propose FLAT: Flat-LAttice Transformer for Chinese NER, which converts the lattice structure into a flat structure consisting of spans. Each span corresponds to a character or latent word and its position in the original latti…
Recent years have witnessed the improving performance of Chinese Named Entity Recognition (NER) from proposing new frameworks or incorporating word lexicons. However, the inner composition of entity mentions in character-level Chinese NER has been rarely studied. Actually, most mentions of regular types have strong name regularity. For example, entities end with indicator words such as "company" or "bank" usually belong to organization. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective method for investigating the regularity of entity spans in Chinese NER, dubbed as Regularity-Inspired reCOgnit…
We present SwellShark, a framework for building biomedical named entity recognition (NER) systems quickly and without hand-labeled data. Our approach views biomedical resources like lexicons as function primitives for autogenerating weak supervision. We then use a generative model to unify and denoise this supervision and construct large-scale, probabilistically labeled datasets for training high-accuracy NER taggers. In three biomedical NER tasks, SwellShark achieves competitive scores with state-of-the-art supervised benchmarks using no hand-labeled training data. In a drug name extraction t…

Recently, Flat-LAttice Transformer (FLAT) has achieved great success in Chinese Named Entity Recognition (NER). FLAT performs lexical enhancement by constructing flat lattices, which mitigates the difficulties posed by blurred word boundaries and the lack of word semantics. In FLAT, the positions of starting and ending characters are used to connect a matching word. However, this method is likely to match more words when dealing with long texts, resulting in long input sequences. Therefore, it significantly increases the memory and computational costs of the self-attention module. To deal with…
In this work, we explore the way to perform named entity recognition (NER) using only unlabeled data and named entity dictionaries. To this end, we formulate the task as a positive-unlabeled (PU) learning problem and accordingly propose a novel PU learning algorithm to perform the task. We prove that the proposed algorithm can unbiasedly and consistently estimate the task loss as if there is fully labeled data. A key feature of the proposed method is that it does not require the dictionaries to label every entity within a sentence, and it even does not require the dictionaries to label all of …

Nested named entity recognition (NER) aims to identify the entity boundaries and recognize categories of the named entities in a complex hierarchical sentence. Some works have been done using character-level, word-level, or lexicon-level based models. However, such researches ignore the role of the complementary annotations. In this paper, we propose a trigger-based graph neural network (Trigger-GNN) to leverage the nested NER. It obtains the complementary annotation embeddings through entity trigger encoding and semantic matching, and tackle nested entity utilizing an efficient graph message …

Recently, it has attracted much attention to build reliable named entity recognition (NER) systems using limited annotated data. Nearly all existing works heavily rely on domain-specific resources, such as external lexicons and knowledge bases. However, such domain-specific resources are often not available, meanwhile it's difficult and expensive to construct the resources, which has become a key obstacle to wider adoption. To tackle the problem, in this work, we propose a novel robust and domain-adaptive approach RDANER for low-resource NER, which only uses cheap and easily obtainable resourc…
