Photonic pseudospin-1/2 systems, which exhibit Dirac cone dispersion at Brillouin zone corners in analogy to graphene, have been extensively studied in recent years. However, it is known that a linear band crossing of two bands cannot emerge at the center of Brillouin zone in a two-dimensional photonic system respecting time reversal symmetry. Using a square lattice of elliptical magneto-optical cylinders, we constructed an unpaired Dirac point at the Brillouin zone center as the intersection of the second and third bands corresponding to the monopole and dipole excitations. Effective medium theory can be applied to the two linearly crossed bands with the effective constitutive parameters numerically calculated using the boundary effective medium approach. It is shown that only the effective permittivity approaches zero while the determinant of the nonzero effective permeability vanishes at the Dirac point frequency, showing a different behavior from the double-zero index metamaterials obtained from the pseudospin-1 triply degenerate points for time reversal symmetric systems. Exotic phenomena, such as the Klein tunneling and Zitterbewegung, in the pseudospin-1/2 system can be well understood from the effective medium description. When the Dirac point is lifted, the edge state dispersion near the $Γ$ point can be accurately predicted by the effective constitutive parameters. We also further realized magneto-optical complex conjugate metamaterials for a wide frequency range by introducing a particular type of non-Hermittian perturbations which make the two linear bands coalescence to form exceptional points at the real frequency.
Light manipulations such as spin-direction locking propagation, robust transport, quantum teleportation and reconfigurable electromagnetic pathways have been investigated at the boundaries of photonic systems. Recently by breaking Dirac cones in time-reversal invariant photonic crystals, valley-pseudospin coupled edge states have been employed to realize selective propagation of light. Here, without photonic boundaries, we realize the propagation of pseudospin states in three-dimensional bulk metacrystal waveguides by employing the ubiquitous valley degree of freedom. Valley-dependent pseudosp…
Pseudospin plays a very important role in understanding various interesting physical phenomena associated with 2D materials such as graphene. It has been proposed that pseudospin is directly related to angular momentum, and it was recently experimentally demonstrated that orbit angular momentum is an intrinsic property of pseudospin in a photonic honeycomb lattice. However, in photonics, the interaction between spin and pseudospin for light has never been investigated. In this Letter, we propose that, in an optical analogue of staggered graphene, i.e. a photonic honeycomb lattice waveguide wit…
Electromagnetic topological insulators have been explored extensively due to the robust edge states they support. In this work, we propose a topological electromagnetic system based on a line defect in topologically nontrivial photonic crystals (PCs). With a finite-difference supercell approach, modal analysis of the PCs structure is investigated in detail. The topological line-defect states are pseudospin polarized and their energy flow directions are determined by the corresponding pseudospin helicities. These states can be excited by using two spatially-symmetric line-source arrays carrying…
The study of spin-orbit coupling of photons has attracted much attention in recent years, and leads to many potential applications in optics. In the recently discovered metamaterial -- photonic crystals with Weyl points, the pseudospin-orbit coupling of photons bears a resemblance to the spin-orbit coupling. We study the pseudospin Hall effect of light in such metamaterials and find that during total reflection, the light beam experiences a transverse shift that is proportional to the pseudospin (or the monopole charge) of the Weyl point. As the spin Hall effect has inspired many works to expl…
Pseudospin plays a central role in many novel physical properties of graphene and other artificial systems which have pseudospins of 1/2. Here we show that in certain photonic crystals (PCs) exhibiting conical dispersions at k = 0, the eigenmodes near the "Dirac-like point" can be described by an effective spin-orbit Hamiltonian with a pseudospin of 1, treating wave propagations in the upper cone, the lower cone and a flat band (corresponding to zero refractive index) within a unified framework. The 3-component spinor gives rise to boundary conditions distinct from those of pseudospin-1/2, lea…
We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with $C_{3v}$ symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the $Γ$ point and the other two due to the gapping out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the $K, K'$ points. The system can support tri-ban…
Valley-Hall phases, first proposed in two-dimensional (2D) materials, originate from nontrivial topologies around valleys which denote local extrema in momentum space. Since they are extended into classical systems, their designs draw inspirations from existing quantum counterparts, and their transports show similar topological protections. In contrast, it is recently established in acoustics that layer pseudospins in valley-Hall phases can give rise to special valley-Hall edge states with fundamentally different transport behaviors at the interfaces compared with various 2D materials. Their r…
We uncover a superscattering behavior of pseudospin-1 wave from weak scatterers in the subwavelength regime where the scatterer size is much smaller than wavelength. The phenomenon manifests itself as unusually strong scattering characterized by extraordinarily large values of the cross section even for arbitrarily weak scatterer strength. We establish analytically and numerically that the physical origin of superscattering is revival resonances, for which the conventional Born theory breaks down. The phenomenon can be experimentally tested using synthetic photonic systems.
Pseudo-spin and valley degrees of freedom (DOFs) engineered in photonic analogues of topological insulators (TI) provide potential approaches to optical encoding and robust signal transport. Here we observe a ballistic edge state whose spin-valley indices are locked to the direction of propagation along the interface between a valley photonic crystal and a metacrystal emulating the quantum spin Hall effect. We demonstrate the inhibition of inter-valley scattering at a Y-junction formed at the interfaces between photonic TIs carrying different spin-valley Chern numbers. These results open up th…

The recent realization of photonic topological insulators has brought the discovery of fundamentally new states of light and revolutionary applications such as non-reciprocal devices for photonic diodes and robust waveguides for light routing. The spatially distinguished layer pseudospin has attracted attention in two-dimensional electronic materials. Here we report layered photonic topological insulators based on all-dielectric bilayer photonic crystal slabs. The introduction of layer pseudospin offers more dispersion engineering capability, leading to the layer-polarized and layer-mixed phot…
Topological edge states are the core of topological photonics. Here we introduce the antihelical edge states of time-reversal symmetric topological metals and propose a photonic realization in an anisotropic square lattice of coupled ring resonators, where the clockwise and counterclockwise modes play the role of pseudospins. The antihelical edge states robustly propagate across the corners toward the diagonal of the square lattice: The same (opposite) pseudospins copropagate in the same (opposite) direction on the parallel lattice boundaries; the different pseudospins separate and converge at…
We experimentally realize a photonic analogue of the anomalous quantum Hall insulator using a two-dimensional (2D) array of coupled ring resonators. Similar to the Haldane model, our 2D array is translation invariant, has zero net gauge flux threading the lattice, and exploits next-nearest neighbor couplings to achieve a topologically non-trivial bandgap. Using direct imaging and on-chip transmission measurements, we show that the bandgap hosts topologically robust edge states. We demonstrate a topological phase transition to a conventional insulator by frequency detuning the ring resonators a…
We study the emergence of a parity breaking coherent photonic state of a photon mode coupled to finite array of two-level systems, represented by pseudospins 1/2. The pseudospin-photon interaction is realised via a shift of the photonic oscillator equilibrium position by an amount linear in Cartesian component of the total pseudospin. We demonstrate analytically, that the instability is manifested in an upturn from concave to convex of the ground state energy dependence on the total pseudospin component coupled to the photons. The perturbation, sufficient for parity breaking, tends to zero in …
Valley pseudospin, a new degree of freedom in photonic lattices, provides an intriguing way to manipulate photons and enhance the robustness of optical networks. Here we experimentally demonstrated topological waveguiding, refracting, resonating, and routing of valley-polarized photons in integrated circuits. Specifically, we show that at the domain wall between photonic crystals of different topological valley phases, there exists a topologically protected valley kink state that is backscattering-free at sharp bends and terminals. We further harnessed these valley kink states for constructing…
We report on transport properties of the super-honeycomb lattice, the band structure of which possesses a flat band and Dirac cones, according to the tight-binding approximation. This super-honeycomb model combines the honeycomb lattice and the Lieb lattice and displays the properties of both. The super-honeycomb lattice also represents a hybrid fermionic and bosonic system, which is rarely seen in nature. By choosing the phases of input beams properly, the flat-band mode of the super-honeycomb will be excited and the input beams will exhibit strong localization during propagation. On the othe…
Photonic crystal topological insulators host protected states at their edges. In the band structure these edge states appear as continuous bands crossing the photonic band gap. They allow light to propagate unidirectionally and without scattering. In practice it is essential to make devices relying on these effects as miniature as possible. Here we study all-dielectric photonic topological insulator particles (finite crystals) which do not require a magnetic field. In such particles the edge states' frequencies are discrete. Nevertheless, the discrete states support pseudospin-dependent unidir…
We study the effects of a synthetic gauge field and pseudospin-orbit interaction in a stacked two-dimensional ring-network model. The model was introduced to simulate light propagation in the corresponding ring-resonator lattice, and is thus completely bosonic. Without these two items, the model exhibits Floquet-Weyl and Floquet-topological-insulator phases with topologically gapless and gapped band structures, respectively. The synthetic magnetic field implemented in the model results in a three-dimensional Hofstadter-butterfly-type spectrum in a photonic platform. The resulting gaps are char…
We measure the local near-field spin in topological edge state waveguides that emulate the quantum spin Hall effect. We reveal a highly structured spin density distribution that is not linked to a unique pseudospin value. From experimental near-field real-space maps and numerical calculations, we confirm that this local structure is essential in understanding the properties of optical edge states and light-matter interactions. The global spin is reduced by a factor of 30 in the near field and, for certain frequencies, flipped compared to the pseudospin measured in the far-field. We experimenta…
Effective medium theory is used to model a one dimensional lossy dielectric quaternary photonic crystal as a homogeneous slab. The unit cell of the original crystal is inversion symmetric with layer sequence ACBCA. The behavior of the branch frequency singularities in the effective refractive index is investigated as parameters in the layered structure change. A heterostructure composed of multiple photonic crystals is also modeled with effective medium theory. It is shown that the effective refractive index of such a structure possesses regions of normal dispersion that correspond to localize…
We study nonlinear effects in two-dimensional photonic metasurfaces supporting topologically-protected helical edge states at the nanoscale. We observe strong third-harmonic generation mediated by optical nonlinearities boosted by multipolar Mie resonances of silicon nanoparticles. Variation of the pump-beam wavelength enables independent high-contrast imaging of either bulk modes or spin-momentum-locked edge states. We demonstrate topology-driven tunable localization of the generated harmonic fields and map the pseudospin-dependent unidirectional waveguiding of the edge states bypassing sharp…
Surface scattering of free electrons strongly modifies the electromagnetic response near the interface. Due to the inherent anisotropy of the surface scattering that necessarily reverses the normal the interface component of the electron velocity while its tangential component may remain the same, a thin layer near a high-quality interface shows strong dielectric anisotropy. The formation of the resulting hyperbolic dispersion layers near the metal-dielectric interface strongly modifies the local density of states, and leads to orders of magnitude changes in all associated phenomena.
In the research of topological phases of matter, valley pseudospins have been introduced into photonic systems. Here, we construct a split-ring photonic crystal (SPC) in which the spilt rings are distributed according to the Kagome model. By rotating three split rings as a whole under the condition of ensuring the existence of C3v symmetry, we obtain a traditional two-band-inversion valley topology (2IVT) driven by opening twofold Dirac degeneracy point. When three split rings are rotated as a whole without ensuring the existence of C3v symmetry, a valley-like topology driven by opening twofol…
In this paper, we have firstly proposed two-dimensional function photonic crystals, which the dielectric constants of medium columns are the functions of space coordinates $\vec{r}$, it is different from the two-dimensional conventional photonic crystals constituting by the medium columns of dielectric constants are constants. We find the band gaps of two-dimensional function photonic crystals are different from the two-dimensional conventional photonic crystals, and when the functions form of dielectric constants are different, the band gaps structure should be changed, which can be designed …
Anderson localization is a ubiquitous interference phenomenon in which waves fail to propagate in a disordered medium. Unlike in a classical resonator, satisfying the favorable condition for the interference in a disordered medium is truly a statistical problem in physics. Recent progress in realizing Anderson localization is mainly limited to the iterative method for optimizing the disordered medium. Availability of an in-situ, active control for optimization surely paves the way of realizing the Anderson localization and its applications. In this letter, we have proposed an electro-optic con…
Recently the possibility of achieving one-way backscatter immune transportation of light by mimicking the topological order present within certain solid state systems, such as topological insulators, has received much attention. Thus far however, demonstrations of non-trivial topology in photonics have relied on photonic crystals with precisely engineered lattice structures, periodic on the scale of the operational wavelength and composed of finely tuned, complex materials. Here we propose a novel effective medium approach towards achieving topologically protected photonic surface states robus…
Zak phase and topological protected edge state are usually studied in one-dimensional(1D) photonic systems with spatial inversion symmetry(SIS). Interestingly in this work, we find specific classes of 1D structure without SIS can be mapped to system with SIS and also exhibit novel topology, which manifest as phase cut lines(PCLs) in our specially designed synthetic photonic crystals(SPCs). Zak phase defined in SIS is extended to depict the topology of PCLs after redefinition and topological protected edge state is also achieved in our 1D structure without SIS. In our SPCs, the relationship bet…
We investigate theoretically and numerically the photonic band structure in the optical domain of an array of core-shell metal-semiconductor nanowires. Corresponding negative-index photonic bands are calculated, showing isotropic equifrequency surfaces. The effective (negative) electric permittivity and magnetic permeability, retrieved from S parameters, are used to compare the performance of such nanowire arrays with homogeneous media in canonical examples, such as refraction through a prism and flat-lens focusing. Very good agreement is found, indeed confirming the effective medium behavior …
Electromagnetic (EM) waves propagating through an inhomogeneous medium inevitably scatter whenever electromagnetic properties of the medium change on the scale of a single wavelength. This fundamental phenomenon constrains how optical structures are designed and interfaced with each other. Recent theoretical work indicates that electromagnetic structures collectively known as photonic topological insulators (PTIs) can be employed to overcome this fundamental limitation, thereby paving the way for ultra-compact photonic structures that no longer have to be wavelength-scale smooth. Here we prese…
Nonlinearities in lattices with topological band structures can induce topological interfaces in the bulk of structures and give rise to bulk solitons in the topological bandgaps. Here we study a photonic Chern insulator with saturable nonlinearity and show the existence of topological bulk solitons. The fundamental bulk solitons exhibit as semi-vortex solitons, where only one pseudospin component has a nonzero vorticity. The bulk solitons have equal angular momentum at different valleys. This phenomenon is a direct outcome of the topology of the linear host lattice and the angular momentum ca…
Photonic topological insulators are an interesting class of materials whose photonic band structure can have a bandgap in the bulk while supporting topologically protected unidirectional edge modes. Recent studies [1-6] on bianisotropic metamaterials that emulate the electronic quantum spin Hall effect using its electromagnetic analog are examples of such systems with relatively simple and elegant design. In this paper, we present a rotating magnetic dipole antenna, composed of two perpendicularly oriented coils, that can efficiently excite the unidirectional topologically protected surface wa…
We extend results of [Liu et al. Proc. Roy. Soc. Lond. A 469, 20130240, 2013] on artificial magneto-electric coupling and magnetism in moderate contrast dielectric layered media via high-order homogenization to the three-dimensional setting. For this, we consider asymptotic expansions in the vector Maxwell system. We then illustrate effect of magneto-electric coupling with numerical simulations for a layered system alternating positively and negatively refracting index. We unveil hyperbolic behaviour and magneto-electric coupling and derive a sharper estimate for the anisotropic effective medi…
We study the propagation of electromagnetic waves in layered photonic crystals formed by materials with a spontaneous nonreciprocal response, such as Tellegen (axion) media or topological insulators. Surprisingly, it is proven that stratified Tellegen photonic crystals that break simultaneously the space inversion and time reversal symmetries have always symmetric dispersion diagrams. Interestingly, we show that by combining chiral and nonreciprocal materials the photonic band diagrams can exhibit a spectral asymmetry such that . Furthermore, it is demonstrated that in some conditions two juxt…
