We make use of micro-magneto Raman scattering spectroscopy to probe magneto-phonon resonances (MPR) in suspended mono- to penta-layer graphene. MPR correspond to avoided crossings between zone-center optical phonons (G-mode) and optically-active inter Landau level (LL) transitions and provide a tool to perform LL spectroscopy at a fixed energy ($\approx 197~\rm{meV}$) set by the G-mode phonon. Using a single-particle effective bilayer model, we readily extract the velocity parameter associated with each MPR. A single velocity parameter slightly above the bulk graphite value suffices to fit all MPR for $N\geq2$ layer systems. In contrast, in monolayer graphene, we find that the velocity parameter increases significantly from $(1.23\pm 0.01) \times 10^6~\mathrm{m.s^{-1}}$ up to $(1.45\pm0.02) \times 10^6~\mathrm{m.s^{-1}}$ as the first to third optically-active inter LL transition couple to the G-mode phonon. This result is understood as a signature of enhanced many-body effects in unscreened graphene.
We investigate the electronic transport through a suspended carbon-nanotube quantum dot. In the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the nanotube and a nearby metallic gate, two forces act on the electrons: the Laplace and the electrostatic force. They both induce coupling between the electrons and the mechanical transverse oscillation modes. We find that the difference between the two mechanisms appears in the cotunneling current.
Graphene membranes suspended off electric contacts or other rigid supports are prone to elastic strain, which is concentrated at the edges and corners of the samples. Such a strain leads to an algebraically varying effective magnetic field that can reach a few Tesla in sub-micron wide flakes. In the quantum Hall regime the interplay of the effective and the physical magnetic fields causes backscattering of the chiral edge channels, which can destroy the quantized conductance plateaus.
We study the optical response of a suspended graphene field-effect transistor in magnetic fields of up to 9 T (quantum Hall regime). With an illumination power of only 3 μW, we measure a photocurrent of up to 400 nA, corresponding to a photo-responsivity of 0.14 A/W, which we believe to be the highest value ever measured in single-layer graphene. We estimate that every absorbed photon creates more than 8 electron-hole pairs, which demonstrates highly effective carrier multiplication. As suggested by the dependence of the photocurrent on gate voltage and magnetic field, we propose a ballistic t…
Semiconducting monolayer of 2D material are able to concatenate multiple interesting properties into a single component. Here, by combining opto-mechanical and electronic measurements, we demonstrate the presence of a partial 2H-1T phase transition in a suspended 2D monolayer membrane of MoS2. Electronic transport shows unexpected memristive properties in the MoS2 membrane, in the absence of any external dopants. A strong mechanical softening of the membrane is measured concurrently and may only be related to the phase 2H-1T phase transition which imposes a 3percent directional elongation of t…
We report pronounced magnetoconductance oscillations observed on suspended bilayer and trilayer graphene devices with mobilities up to 270,000 cm2/Vs. For bilayer devices, we observe conductance minima at all integer filling factors nu between 0 and -8, as well as a small plateau at ν=1/3. For trilayer devices, we observe features at nu=-1, -2, -3 and -4, and at ν~0.5 that persist to 4.5K at B=8T. All of these features persist for all accessible values of Vg and B, and could suggest the onset of symmetry breaking of the first few Landau (LL) levels and fractional quantum Hall states.
We present a versatile design of freely suspended quantum point contacts with particular large one-dimensional subband quantization energies of up to 10meV. The nanoscale bridges embedding a two-dimensional electron system are fabricated from AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures by electron-beam lithography and etching techniques. Narrow constrictions define quantum point contacts that are capacitively controlled via local in-plane side gates. Employing transport spectroscopy, we investigate the transition from electrostatic subbands to Landau-quantization in a perpendicular magnetic field. The large …
Single crystal tungsten ditelluride (WTe2) has recently been discovered to exhibit non-saturating extreme magnetoresistance in bulk; it has also emerged as a new layered material from which atomic layer crystals can be extracted. While atomically thin WTe2 is attractive for its unique properties, little study has been conducted on single- and few-layer WTe2. Here we report the isolation of single- and few-layer WTe2, as well as fabrication and characterization of the first WTe2 suspended nanostructures. We have observed new Raman signatures of few-layer WTe2 that have been theoretically predic…
The transport properties of a suspended carbon nanotube probed by means of a STM tip are investigated. A microscopic theory of the coupling between electrons and mechanical vibrations is developed. It predicts a position-dependent coupling constant, sizeable only in the region where the vibron is located. This fact has profound consequences on the transport properties, which allow to extract information on the location and size of the vibrating portions of the nanotube.
We introduce a new scheme to realize suspended, multi-terminal graphene structures that can be current annealed successfully to obtain uniform, very high quality devices. A key aspect is that the bulky metallic contacts are not connected directly to the part of graphene probed by transport measurements, but only through etched constriction, which prevents the contacts from acting invasively. The device high quality and uniformity is demonstrated by a reproducibly narrow (delta_n ~ 10^9 cm^-2) resistance peak around charge neutrality, by carrier mobility values exceeding 10^6 cm^2/V/s, by the o…
We report on magnetotransport measurements of multi-terminal suspended graphene devices. Fully developed integer quantum Hall states appear in magnetic fields as low as 2 T. At higher fields the formation of longitudinal resistance minima and transverse resistance plateaus are seen corresponding to fractional quantum Hall states, most strongly for ν= 1/3. By measuring the temperature dependence of these resistance minima, the energy gap for the 1/3 fractional state in graphene is determined to be at ~20 K at 14 T.
We have measured the magneto-resistance of freely suspended high-mobility bilayer graphene. For magnetic fields $B>1$ T we observe the opening of a field induced gap at the charge neutrality point characterized by a diverging resistance. For higher fields the eight-fold degenerated lowest Landau level lifts completely. Both the sequence of this symmetry breaking and the strong transition of the gap-size point to a ferromagnetic nature of the insulating phase developing at the charge neutrality point.
We report on magneto-transport measurement in disordered graphene under pulsed magnetic field of up to 57T. For large electron or hole doping, the system displays the expected anomalous Integer Quantum Hall Effect (IQHE) specific to graphene up to filling factor $ν=2$. In the close vicinity of the charge neutrality point, the system breaks up into co-existing puddles of holes and electrons, leading to a vanishing Hall and finite longitudinal resistance with no hint of divergence at very high magnetic field. Large resistance fluctuations are observed near the Dirac point. They are interpreted a…
We study hot carrier transport under magnetic fields up to 15 T in suspended graphitic multilayers through differential conductance (dI/dV) spectroscopy. Distinct high-energy dI/dV anomalies have been observed and shown to be related to intrinsic phonon-emission processes in graphite. The evolution of such dI/dV anomalies under magnetic fields is further understood as a consequence of inter-Landau level cyclotron-phonon resonance scattering. The observed magneto-phonon effects not only shed light on the physical mechanisms responsible for high-current transport in graphitic systems, but also o…
We have investigated the magnetoresistance of Permalloy (Ni80Fe20) films with thicknesses ranging from a single monolayer to 12 nm, grown on Al2O3, MgO and SiO2 substrates. Growth and transport measurements were carried out under cryogenic conditions in UHV. Applying in-plane magnetic vector fields up to 100 mT, the magnetotransport properties are ascertained during growth. With increasing thickness the films exhibit a gradual transition from tunneling magnetoresistance to anisotropic magnetoresistance. This corresponds to the evolution of the film structure from separated small islands to a n…
Dirac fermions in condensed matter physics hold great promise for novel fundamental physics, quantum devices and data storage applications. IV-VI semiconductors, in the inverted regime, have been recently shown to exhibit massless topological surface Dirac fermions protected by crystalline symmetry, as well as massive bulk Dirac fermions. Under a strong magnetic field (B), both surface and bulk states are quantized into Landau levels that disperse as B^1/2, and are thus difficult to distinguish. In this work, magneto-optical absorption is used to probe the Landau levels of high mobility Bi-dop…
Magneto-transport experiments on ABC-stacked suspended trilayer graphene reveal a complete splitting of the twelve-fold degenerated lowest Landau level, and, in particular, the opening of an exchange-driven gap at the charge neutrality point. A quantitative analysis of distinctness of the quantum Hall plateaus as a function of field yields a hierarchy of the filling factors: ν=6, 4, and 0 are the most pronounced, followed by ν=3, and finally ν=1, 2 and 5. Apart from the appearance of a ν=4 state, which is probably caused by a layer asymmetry, this sequence is in agreement with Hund's rules for…
We report the observation of the quantized Hall effect in suspended graphene probed with a two-terminal lead geometry. The failure of earlier Hall-bar measurements is discussed and attributed to the placement of voltage probes in mesoscopic samples. New quantized states are found at integer Landau level fillings outside the sequence 2,6,10.., as well as at a fractional filling ν=1/3. Their presence is revealed by plateaus in the two-terminal conductance which appear in magnetic fields as low as 2 Tesla at low temperatures and persist up to 20 Kelvin in 12 Tesla. The excitation gaps, extracted …
Competition between liquid and solid states in two-dimensional electron system is an intriguing problem in condensed matter physics. We have investigated competing Wigner crystal and fractional quantum Hall ( FQH ) liquid phases in atomically thin suspended graphene devices in Corbino geometry. Low temperature magnetoconductance and transconductance measurements along with $IV$ characteristics all indicate strong charge density dependent modulation of electron transport. Our results show unconventional FQH phases which do not fit the standard Jain's series for conventional FQH states, instead …
The exchange-bias training effect in IrMn-layer/ferromagnetic-ribbon heterostructure is studied by performing magnetoimpedance (MI) measurements. Asymmetric, hysteretic and single peak behavior of the MI response and a shift in the MI peak to zero fields accompanied by 52% increase in MI has been detected as the signature of the exchange bias (EB) and training effect (TE), respectively. Also, during the consecutive filed sweep of MI response, both EB field and the degree of asymmetry of MI decrease that is another reason for existence of TE in our sample. The analysis of the magneto-optical Ke…
Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials with strong magnetostriction are interesting systems for strain-tuning the magnetization, enabling potential for realizing spintronic and nanomagnetic devices. Realizing this potential requires understanding of the magneto-mechanical coupling in the 2D limit. In this work, we suspend thin Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ layers, creating nanomechanical membrane resonators. We probe its mechanical and magnetic properties as a function of temperature and strain. Pronounced signatures of magneto-elastic coupling are observed in the temperature-dependent resonance frequen…
Strongly correlated electron liquids which occur in quantizing magnetic fields reveal a cornucopia of fascinating quantum phenomena such as fractionally charged quasiparticles, anyonic statistics, topological order, and many others. Probing these effects in GaAs-based systems, where electron interactions are relatively weak, requires sub-kelvin temperatures and record-high electron mobilities, rendering some of the most interesting states too fragile and difficult to access. This prompted a quest for new high-mobility systems with stronger electron interactions. Recently, fractional-quantized …
The unique zero energy Landau Level of graphene has a particle-hole symmetry in the bulk, which is lifted at the boundary leading to a splitting into two chiral edge modes. It has long been theoretically predicted that the splitting of the zero-energy Landau level inside the {\it bulk} can lead to many interesting physics, such as quantum spin Hall effect, Dirac like singular points of the chiral edge modes, and others. However, so far the obtained splitting with high-magnetic field even on a hBN substrate are not amenable to experimental detection, and functionality. Guided by theoretical cal…

When Dirac electrons on the surface of a topological insulator are gapped, the resulting quantum anomalous Hall effect leads to universal magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr effects in the low frequency limit. However, at higher frequencies different excitations can leave their own fingerprints on the magneto-optics and can therefore be probed. In particular, we investigate the role of localized in-gap states---which inevitably appear in the presence of charged impurities---on these higher frequency magneto-optical effects. We have shown that these states resonantly contribute to the Hall conduct…
The magneto-conductance of an open carbon nanotube (CNT)-quantum wire was measured in pulsed magnetic fields. At low temperatures we find a peculiar split magneto-conductance peak close to the charge neutrality point. Our analysis of the data reveals that this splitting is intimately connected to the spin-orbit interaction and the tube chirality. Band structure calculations suggest that the current in the peak regions is highly spin-polarized, which calls for application in future CNT-based spintronic devices.
We investigate low-temperature magneto-transport in recently developed, high-quality multi-terminal suspended bilayer graphene devices, enabling the independent measurement of the longitudinal and transverse resistance. We observe clear signatures of the fractional quantum Hall effect, with different states that are either fully developed, and exhibit a clear plateau in the transverse resistance with a concomitant dip in longitudinal resistance, or incipient, and exhibit only a longitudinal resistance minimum. All observed states scale as a function of filling factor nu, as expected. An unprec…
We report about the dephasing of the spins states in a Garnet film excited by femtosecond laser pulses. It is shown that magneto-optical four-wave-mixing signals are efficiently generated and controlled with an external static magnetic field. The self-diffraction of either two or three femtosecond pulses allows us determining independently the coherent response time ($T_2$ < 50 fs) and the population relaxation, which occurs in several steps. After the laser induced demagnetization, the spin-lattice relaxation is the dominant mechanism ($T_{1,spin-lat}$ < 1.35 ps) and the precession of the mag…
Experimental results on the absolute magneto-transmission of a series of high density, high mobility GaAs quantum wells are compared with the predictions of a recent magnetoplasmon theory for values of the filling factor above 2. We show that the magnetoplasmon picture can explain the non-linear features observed in the magnetic field evolution of the cyclotron resonance energies and of the absorption oscillator strength. This provides experimental evidence that inter Landau level excitations probed by infrared spectroscopy need to be considered as many body excitations in terms of magnetoplas…
Bilayer graphene provides a unique platform to explore the rich physics in quantum Hall effect. The unusual combination of spin, valley and orbital degeneracy leads to interesting symmetry broken states with electric and magnetic field. Conventional transport measurements like resistance measurements have been performed to probe the different ordered states in bilayer graphene. However, not much work has been done to directly map the energetics of those states in bilayer graphene. Here, we have carried out the magneto capacitance measurements with electric and magnetic field in a hexagonal bor…
The saga of the primary photoexcitations in $π$-conjugated polymers has been a source of extraordinary scientific curiosity that has lasted for more than three decades. From soliton excitations in trans-polyacetylene, to singlet and triplet excitons and polarons in other polymers, to charge transfer excitons in blends of polymers and fullerenes, the field has been rich with a variety of different photoexcitation species. Here we show the photogeneration of a novel primary intrachain photoexcitation species, namely the composite multi-exciton (CME) in $π$-conjugated donor-acceptor (DA)-copolyme…
We investigate magneto-transport through graphene nano-ribbons as a function of gate and bias voltage, and temperature. We find that a magnetic field systematically leads to an increase of the conductance on a scale of a few tesla. This phenomenon is accompanied by a decrease in the energy scales associated to charging effects, and to hopping processes probed by temperature-dependent measurements. All the observations can be interpreted consistently in terms of strong-localization effects caused by the large disorder present, and exclude that the insulating state observed in nano-ribbons can b…
The energy-dependence of the electronic scattering time is probed by Landau level spectroscopy in quasi neutral multilayer epitaxial graphene. From the Landau levels broadening we find that the scattering rate increases linearly with energy. This implies a surprising property of the Landau level spectrum in graphene - the number of the resolved Landau levels remains constant with the applied magnetic field. Insights are given about possible scattering mechanism and carrier mobilities in the graphene system investigated.
Momentum resolved magneto-tunnelling spectroscopy is performed at a single sharp quantum Hall edge. We directly probe the structure of individual integer quantum Hall (QH) edge modes, and find that an epitaxially overgrown cleaved edge realizes the sharp edge limit, where the Chklovskii picture relevant for soft etched or gated edges is no longer valid. The Fermi wavevector in the probe quantum well probes the real-space position of the QH edge modes, and reveals inter-channel distances smaller than both the magnetic length and the Bohr radius. We quantitatively describe the lineshape of princ…
We show how the weak field magneto-conductance can be used as a tool to characterize epitaxial graphene samples grown from the C or the Si face of Silicon Carbide, with mobilities ranging from 120 to 12000 cm^2/(V.s). Depending on the growth conditions, we observe anti-localization and/or localization which can be understood in term of weak-localization related to quantum interferences. The inferred characteristic diffusion lengths are in agreement with the scanning tunneling microscopy and the theoretical model which describe the "pure" mono-layer and bilayer of graphene [MacCann et al,. Phys…
Bismuth-doped Yttrium iron garnet (Bi:YIG) thin films known for large Magneto-optical activity with low losses still needs to get probed for its magnetization dynamics. We demonstrate a controlled tuning of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Bi-doped Y_3 Fe_5 O_12 (Bi:YIG) films of high crystalline quality using growth induced epitaxial strain on [111]-oriented Gd_3 Ga_5 O_12 (GGG) substrate. We optimize a growth protocol to get thick highly-strained epitaxial films showing large magneto-crystalline anisotropy, compare to thin films prepared using a different protocol. Ferromagnetic resonance me…
The discovery of the hydrodynamic electron liquid (HEL) in graphene [D. Bandurin \emph{et al.}, Science {\bf 351}, 1055 (2016) and J. Crossno \emph{et al.}, Science {\bf 351}, 1058 (2016)] has marked the birth of the solid-state HEL which can be probed near room temperature in a table-top setup. Here we examine the terahertz (THz) magneto-optical (MO) properties of a graphene HEL. Considering the case where the magnetic length $l_B=\sqrt{\hbar/eB}$ is comparable to the mean-free path $l_{ee}$ for electron-electron interaction in graphene, the MO conductivities are obtained by taking a momentum…
We have performed time-resolved terahertz absorption measurements on photoexcited electron-hole pairs in undoped GaAs quantum wells in magnetic fields. We probed both unbound- and bound-carrier responses via cyclotron resonance and intraexciton resonance, respectively. The stability of excitons, monitored as the pair density was systematically increased, was found to dramatically increase with increasing magnetic field. Specifically, the 1$s$-2$p_-$ intraexciton transition at 9 T persisted up to the highest density, whereas the 1$s$-2$p$ feature at 0 T was quickly replaced by a free-carrier Dr…
Resistance as a function of temperature down to 20mK and magnetic fields up to 18T for various carrier concentrations is measured for nanowires made from the SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interface using a hard mask shadow deposition technique. The narrow width of the wires (of the order of 50nm) allows us to separate out the magnetic effects from the dominant superconducting ones at low magnetic fields. At this regime hysteresis loops are observed along with the superconducting transition. From our data analysis we find that the magnetic order probed by the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect vanishes at TC…
We investigate the resonance energy transfer (RET) rate between two quantum emitters near a suspended graphene sheet in vacuum under the influence of an external magnetic field. We perform the analysis for low and room temperatures and show that, due to the extraordinary magneto-optical response of graphene, it allows for an active control and tunability of the RET even in the case of room temperature. We also demonstrate that the RET rate is extremely sensitive to small variations of the applied magnetic field, and can be tuned up to a striking six orders of magnitude for quite realistic valu…
The resonant interaction of electrically excited travelling surface acoustic waves and magnetization has been hitherto probed through the acoustic component. In this work it is investigated using time-resolved magneto-optical detection of magnetization dynamics. To that end, we develop an experimental scheme where laser pulses are used both to generate the acoustic wave frequency and to probe magnetization dynamics thus ensuring perfect phase locking. The light polarization dependence of the signal enables to disentangle elasto-optic and magneto-optic contributions and to obtain the in-plane a…
We study magneto--optical properties of monolayer graphene by means of quantum field theory methods in the framework of the Dirac model. We reveal a good agreement between the Dirac model and a recent experiment on giant Faraday rotation in cyclotron resonance. We also predict other regimes when the effects are well pronounced. The general dependence of the Faraday rotation and absorption on various parameters of samples is revealed both for suspended and epitaxial graphene.
For materials near the phase boundary between weak and strong topological insulators (TIs), their band topology depends on the band alignment, with the inverted (normal) band corresponding to the strong (weak) TI phase. Here, taking the anisotropic transition-metal pentatelluride ZrTe$_5$ as an example, we show that the band inversion manifests itself as a second extremum (band gap) in the layer stacking direction, which can be probed experimentally via magneto-infrared spectroscopy. Specifically, we find that the band anisotropy of ZrTe$_5$ features a slow dispersion in the layer stacking dir…
