Since the {\tt KKMC} program was published for the first time over 20 years ago, it has gained popularity and was exploited in a broad spectrum of applications. The core part of the program itself did not change much. In contrast, some of the libraries have evolved substantially. The aim of this publication is to archive four versions, alternative to the one published 20 years ago versions of the electroweak libraries (or just parameter initialization versions), which were instrumental for the precision Standard Model calculation from the end of LEP era till now and for the sake of the future applications/comparisons for the future electron-positron colliders, in particular for the FCC-ee related studies. These electroweak libraries are useful for the hadron collider applications as well, for instance for {\tt KKMC-hh} or {\tt TauSpinner} projects.
The status of the Monte Carlo programs for the simulation of the $τ$ lepton production in high energy accelerator experiments and decay is reviewed. In particular, the status of the following packages is discussed: (i) TAUOLA for tau-lepton decay, (ii) PHOTOS for radiative corrections in decays, (iii) KORALB, KORALZ, KKMC packages for tau-pair production in e+e- collisions and (iv) universal interface of TAUOLA for the decay of tau-leptons produced by``any'' generator. Special emphasis on requirements from new and future experiments is given. Some considerations about the software organization…
We present the {\tt KKMCee 5.00.2} Monte Carlo event generator for lepton and quark pair production for the high energy electron-positron annihilation process. It is still the most sophisticated event generator for such processes. Its entire source code is re-written in the modern C++ language. It reproduces all features of the older \kkmc\ code in Fortran 77. However, a number of improvements in the Monte Carlo algorithm are also implemented. Most importantly, it is intended to be a starting point for the future improvements, which will be mandatory for the future high precision lepton collid…
Experimental results on jet physics at LEP and SLC are reviewed and compared with perturbative QCD predictions. The discussion includes determinations of the strong coupling $\as$, measurements of event shape distributions and jet cross sections, studies of subjet multiplicities and tests of QCD coherence.
We use the spinor methods of the CALKUL collaboration, as realized by Xu, Zhang and Chang, to calculate the differential cross section for e+ e- --> e+ e- + 2 photons for c.m.s. energies in the SLC/LEP regime. An explicit complete formula for the respective cross section is obtained. The leading log approximation is used to check the formula. Applications of the formula to high precision luminosity calculations at SLC/LEP are discussed.
Leptons, quarks and gauge bosons are assumed to be pointlike particles in the Standard Model. Stringent bounds on the radii of quarks and leptons and their weak anomalous magnetic moments can be derived from the high-precision measurements at LEP and SLC. We find a model-independent bound of $R\lsim 10^{-17}cm$ for quark and lepton radii. HERA will provide complementary information on the electromagnetic static properties of the quarks and the parameters of the charged quark currents.
Brief information on new features of KORALZ version 4.04 with respect to version 4.0 is given. The main difference is that the new version could be used at LEP2 energies, i.e. up to 240 GeV centre-of-mass system energy. The possibility to switch on different classes of anomalous couplings is also included.
We update the constraints on anomalous dimension four $\tbw$ and $\ttz$ couplings by using CLEO $b \ra s γ$ and LEP/SLC precision $Z$-pole data. It is found that the data imposes very stringent bounds on them. Moreover, the $2 σ$ pull from SM predictions of $A_{LR}$(hadrons), $A_b$ and $A_{FB}$(b) have little chance of being explained by the strongly constrained anomalous couplings.
We present O(alpha) YFS exponentiated results for wide angle Bhabha scattering at LEP/SLC energies using a new Monte Carlo event generator BHWIDE 1.xx. Our calculations include two options for the pure weak corrections, as presented in Beenakker et al. and in Bohm et al. From comparison with the results of Beenakker et al., Montagna et al. and Cacciari et al., we conclude that the total precision of our BHWIDE results is 0.3% (0.5%) in the LEP1/SLC regime within +-100 MeV (+2.75/-2.5 GeV) of the Z peak. For LEP2, the corresponding precision is currently estimated at 1.5%; the latter could be i…
The impact of the new experimental data from LEP, SLC and CDF on the top quark mass and the Higgs boson mass is investigated. The determinations of m_{top} and of an upper bound on m_{Higgs} are given, taking into account the experimental error on the QED coupling constant α_{em} and on the b-quark mass m_b. The relevance of higher order theoretical uncertainties is pointed out. briefly reviewed.
We present the exact O(alpha) correction to the process e+ e- -> e+ e- + gamma in the low angle luminosity regime at SLC/LEP energies. We give explicit formulas for the completely differential cross section. As an important application, we illustrate the size of the respective corrections of O(alpha^2) to the SLC/LEP luminosity cross section. We show explicitly that our results have the correct infrared limit, as a cross-check. Some comments are made about the implementation of our results in the framework of a Monte Carlo event generator. This latter implementation will appear elsewhere.
We show that the observation of energetic charged leptons from semileptonic $B$-meson decays at the LEP and SLC $Z$--boson factories offers a unique opportunity to measure the quark mixing matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. We present various distributions of the $B$ decay products to show that the $b \to u$ decays can be cleanly separated from the $b \to c$ decays, with a signal of $O(100)$ events per million $Z$ bosons produced.
In order to explain possible departures from the Standard Model predictions for $b\bar b$ and $c\bar c$ production at $Z$ peak, we propose the existence of a $Z'$ vector boson with enhanced couplings to quarks. We first show that this proposal is perfectly consistent with the full set of LEP1/SLC results. In particular, $Z-Z'$ mixing effects naturally explain the fact that $Γ_b$ and $Γ_c$ deviate from the SM in opposite directions. We then show that there is a predicted range for enhanced $Z'q\bar q$ couplings which explains, for a precise and interesting range of $Z'$ masses, the excess of di…
A simple way of deriving and analyzing electroweak radiative corrections to the $Z$ boson decays is presented in the framework of the Standard Model. This paper is an updated and revised version of a plenary talk given at the Second Sakharov Conference; Lebedev Physical Institute, Moscow, May 20-24, 1996.
This paper is an updated version of the invited plenary talk given at the XXII Physics in Collision Conference at Stanford, (June 2002). The measurements performed at LEP and SLC have substantially improved the precision of the tests of the Minimal Standard Model. The precision is such that there is sensitivity to pure weak radiative corrections. This allows to indirectly determine the top mass (\mt=178$\pm$10 GeV), the W-boson mass (\MW=80.368$\pm$0.022 GeV), and to set an upper limit on the Higgs boson mass of 193 GeV at 95% confidence level.
The existence of anomalous electric($\tilde κ$) and/or magnetic($κ$) dipole moment couplings between the heavy flavor fermions ($c,b,τ$) and the $Z$ boson can cause significant shifts in the values of several electroweak observables currently being probed at both the SLC and LEP. Using the good agreement between existing data and the predictions of the Standard Model we obtain strict bounds on the possible strength of these new interactions for all of the heavy flavors. The decay $Z\rightarrow b\bar b$, however, provides some possible hint of new physics. The corresponding anomalous couplings …
We present the Monte Carlo program BHAGEN95, for calculating the cross-section of the Bhabha scattering process at LEP1/SLC and LEP2 energies, usable with continuity from small to large-angle configurations. We discuss some improvements in the event generator BHAGEN94, which is now part of the new code. In particular the weak and QCD corrections are implemented up to two loops for the relevant contributions, and the emission of one hard photon is treated exactly. We have included all the radiative corrections which are necessary to obtain, for a typical experimental event selection, a precisio…
We find that re-analyzing the LEP/SLC data with light superpartners and low $α_s(\mz^2)\simeq 0.112$ yields a better fit to the data than the Standard Model, giving a satisfactory description of the $R_b$ measurement, and a better fit to $A_{LR}$. A large body of low energy ($q^2 \ll \mz^2$) data and analyses provide compelling evidence for $α_s(\mz^2)\simeq 0.112$. Global fits to LEP/SLC data in the Standard Model, however, converge on a value of $α_s(\mz^2)\simeq 0.126$. Recently it has become increasingly clear that these should be viewed as incompatible rather than values that can be avera…
We consider the error budget for the calculation of the LEP/SLC luminosity in the Monte Carlo event generator BHLUMI4.04 from the standpoint of new calculations of the exact result for the O(alpha) correction to the process e+ e- -> e+ e- + gamma in the low angle luminosity regime at SLC/LEP energies, for the double bremsstrahlung effect e+ e- -> e+ e- + gamma gamma in this regime, and for the size of the two-loop virtual correction to e+ e- -> e+ e- in this regime in context of Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exponentiation. We find that the error on the O(alpha**2) photonic correction can be reduced …
We examine the potential of constraining possible nondecoupling effects of heavy neutrinos and Higgs bosons at LEP and SLC that may show up in the nonoblique part of the $Zl_il_j$ couplings. We analyze this type of new-physics interactions within the context of low-energy scenarios motivated by unified theories, such as the Standard Model (SM) with neutral isosinglets, the left-right symmetric model, and the minimal supersymmetric SM. Our analysis comprises a complete set of physical quantities based on the nonobservation of flavour-violating $Z$-boson decays, lepton universality in the decays…
Recently, the L3 collaboration has reported the observation of four events in the reactions e+ e- --> L+ L- + (2 Photons), L = e, mu, tau, with the invariant photon pair mass near 60 GeV in a data sample collected in the L3 detector corresponding to 950,000 produced Z0's. More recently, more data from the other LEP collaborations have become available. In this paper, we use the Monte Carlo genrator YFS3 and our recent exact results on e+ e- --> L+ L- + (2 Photons) to assess the QED expectations for such L3-type high mass photon pair events in e+ e- --> L+ L- + (n Photons) near the Z0 resonance…
This manual describes version 2.2 of the Monte Carlo event generator UNIBAB for large angle Bhabha scattering at LEP and SLC. UNIBAB implements higher order electromagnetic radiative corrections and the effects of soft photon exponentiation in a photon shower approach. Weak corrections are included through the use of an electroweak library.
In this thesis exact results on O(alpha^2) single bremsstrahlung corrections to low angle Bhabha scattering at LEP/SLC energies are given. The calculation represents the last outstanding theoretical second order subleading electroweak contribution for that process, needed to determine the experimental luminosity at second generation LEP detectors below the 0.1% precision threshold. The exact, fully differential result is obtained by employing analytical as well as computer-algebraic methods and includes terms up to O(0.05%) relative to the Born cross section. The initial output of over 20,000 …
A global analysis is performed using the latest data from LEP and SLC. Constraints on the electroweak universal parameters ($S,T,U$) and on the masses of the top quark and Higgs boson within the Standard Model (SM) are investigated. The uncertainties due to the QCD and QED effective couplings, $α_s(\mz)$ and $\barα(\mmz)$, are examined in detail. Even though the mean value of $S$ is increased to be consistent with zero, the naive Technicolor models are still disfavored due to its reduced error. Within the SM, we find the 90\,\%CL constraints; $133\gev<m_t<190\gev$ and $10\gev<\mh<440\gev$ for …
We perform a joint analysis of the prediction of composite Higgs models for the discrepancies of the forward-backward asymmetries of top and bottom quarks at Tevatron and LEP+SLC, respectively. We build a two sector model which can be thought as an effective low energy description of 5D warped models and choose the quantum numbers of the fermionic resonances to protect the Z-couplings of the partially composite Standard Model light quarks. We analyze the cross section, forward-backward asymmetry and invariant mass distribution of the top anti-top production at Tevatron, as well as the bottom f…
The status of the Monte Carlo programs for the simulation of the tau-lepton production and decay in high energy accelerator experiments is reviewed. In particular, the status of the following packages is discussed: (i) TAUOLA for tau-lepton decay and PHOTOS for radiative corrections in decays, (ii) MC-TESTER for universal tests of the Monte Carlo programs describing particle decays, (iii) KORALB, KORALZ, KKMC packages for tau-pair production in e+e- collisions, and (iv) universal interface of TAUOLA for the decay of tau-leptons produced by ``any'' generator.
I shortly review time period of twelve years, 1989-2000, which was devoted to a theoretical support of experiments at LEP and SLC at Z resonance and discuss several directions of possible future work in the field of precision theoretical calculations for experiments at future colliders.
After 10 years of steadily increasing the experimental precision at LEP/SLC, there is a strong demand on an update of existing programs for fermion pair production. We present a rederivation of the O(alpha) Bremsstrahlung corrections to e+e- --> f+f- for the semi-analytic program ZFITTER. We focus on observables like total cross section and forward-backward asymmetry in the leptonic case with combined cuts on acollinearity angle, acceptance angle, and minimal energy of the fermions. The outcome of our analysis is a shift of the predictions by ZFITTER at LEP 1 energies off-resonance of a few pe…
Recent tests of the electroweak Standard Model are reviewed, covering the precise measurements of Z decays at LEP I and SLC and measurements of fermion pair production at higher energies at LEP II. Special emphasis is given to new results on W physics from LEP and FNAL.
Key electroweak measurements performed by the SLD collaboration at the SLC are described and recent results given. The left-right cross-section asymmetry, $A_{LR}$, has been updated to include the 1996 data. It remains the single most precise measurement of $\sin^2θ_W^{eff}$, and it is compared to the LEP results. The polarized differential cross section for $b$-quarks is measured and is used to perform a unique direct measurement of the parity violation parameter for $b$ quarks, $A_b$. The excellent capability to perform secondary vertexing at SLC with CCD-based vertex detectors is described,…
We discuss the status and some ongoing upgrades of the ZFITTER program for applications at e+e- colliders LEP1/SLC, LEP2, GigaZ, and TESLA. The inclusion of top quark pair production is under work.
For the small-angle Bhabha-scattering process, we consider the error budget for the calculation of the LEP/SLC luminosity in the Monte Carlo event generator BHLUMI 4.04, from the standpoint of new calculations of exact results for the respective O(alpha**2) photonic corrections in the context of the Yennie-Frautchi-Suura exponentiation. We find that an over-all precision tag for the currently available program BHLUMI 4.04 can be reduced from 0.11% to 0.061% at LEP1 and from 0.25% to 0.122% at LEP2. For the large-angle Bhabha process, we present the Monte Carlo program BHWIDE and compare its pr…
The Monte Carlo for lepton pair production andtau decays consist of KKMC for lepton pair production, tauola for tau lepton decays and photos for radiative corrections in decays. An effort for adaptation of the system for precision data being collected at the Belle II experiment included simulation of additional light lepton pairs. Extension to processes where lepton pair is produced through narrow resonances, like dark photon or dark scalar phi resonances, was straight forward. Modified programs versions are available in stand-alone format from gitlab repository or through the basf2 system of …
The status of the Monte Carlo programs for the simulation of tau-lepton production and decay in high-energy accelerator experiments is reviewed. No significant changes in the organization of the programs were introduced since previous TAU conference, that is why we will concentrate on some physical topics: (i) For TAUOLA Monte Carlo generator of tau-lepton decays, simulation of five scalar final states based on the hadronic current became available for the first time. As an example, simple, but realistic current for final states: 2pi- pi+ 2pi0 nu_tau, pi- 4pi0 nu_tau and 3pi- 2pi+ nu_tau is pr…
In view of the recent and future electroweak precision data accumulated at LEP and SLC, we systematically analyze possible new physics effects that may occur in the leptonic sector within the context of $SU(2)_R \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_{B-L}$ theories. It is shown that nonobservation of flavour-violating $Z$-boson decays, lepton universality in the decays $Z\to l\bar{l}$, and universality of lepton asymmetries at the $Z$ peak form a set of complementary observables, yielding severe constraints on the parameter space of these theories. Contributions of new-physics effects to $R_b=Γ(Z\to b\ba…
It is shown that Cherenkov radiation can be observed at TESLA in electron collisions with optical laser pulses. The prospects for it to be observed at SLC, LEP, LHC and RHIC are discussed. The conclusions are compared with results for pair production.
The 1999 precision electroweak data from LEP and SLC persist in showing some slight discrepancies from the assumed standard model, mostly regarding $b$ and $c$ quarks. We show how their mixing with exotic heavy quarks could result in a more consistent fit of all the data, including two unconventional interpretations of the top quark.
Next-to-leading order calculation for three jet heavy quark production in e^+e^- collisions, including complete quark mass effects, is reviewed. Its applications at LEP/SLC are also discussed.
Matching and comparing measurements of past and future experiments calls for consistency checks of calculations used for their interpretation. New schemes of the field theory may optimize precision, but obscure comparisons with earlier results. Over years concepts of Improved Born, Effective Born, effective couplings, and sin^2theta_W^eff mixing angle for electroweak interactions, have evolved. We use four DIZET electroweak library versions; of today and of the last 30 years, wich were used for phenomenology of practically all HEP accelerator experiments. Versions differ by incremented with ti…
Analytic formulae are derived for the complete photon energy spectrum due to QED corrections to fermion pair production in case of a limited angular acceptance for the final state fermions. After a numerical integration over the energy of non-observed photons, this corresponds to typical experimental conditions at LEP/SLC.
ZFITTER is a Fortran package for the description of fermion-pair production in e+e- annihilation. We report on results of a rederivation of the complete set of analytical O(alpha) formulae for the treatment of photonic corrections to the total cross-section and the integrated forward-backward asymmetry with combined cuts on acollinearity angle, acceptance angle, and minimal energy of the fermions. Numerically, the following changes result in ZFITTER v. 6.11 compared to ZFITTER v. 5.20/21: (i) at the Z resonance -- numerical changes are negligible; (ii) at LEP 1 energies off-resonance -- correc…
Next-to-leading order calculations for heavy quark three-jet production in e+e- annihilation are reviewed. Their applications for the measurement of the b-quark mass at LEP/SLC and for the test of flavour independence of the strong coupling constant are discussed.
The LHC enters era of the Standard Model Z-boson couplings precise measurements, to match precision of LEP. The calculations of electroweak (EW) corrections in the Monte Carlo generators become of relevance. Precise predictions of Z-boson production and decay require classes of QED/EW/QCD corrections, preferably in the manner which allows for separation from the QCD dynamics of the production. At LEP, calculations, genuine weak and lineshape corrections were introduced into electroweak form-factors and Improved Born Approximation. This was well suited for so-called doubly-deconvoluted observab…
Next-to-leading order calculations of heavy quark three-jet production in e^+ e^- annihilation are reviewed. Their application for the measurement of the b-quark mass at LEP/SLC and to the test of the flavour independence of the strong coupling constant are discussed. Prospects for future improvements are studied.
The measurements performed at LEP and SLC have substantially improved the precision of the test of the Minimal Standard Model. The precision is such that there is sensitivity to pure weak radiative corrections. This allows to indirectly determine the top mass (\mt=161$\pm$8 GeV), the W-boson mass (\MW=80.37$\pm$0.03 GeV), and to set an upper limit on the the Higgs boson mass of 262 GeV at 95% confidence level.
We parameterize the non-universal couplings of t-t-Z and t-b-W in the electroweak chiral lagrangian approach, and examine the constraints on these parameters from the LEP data. We also study how the SLC, Tevatron, LHC and NLC can improve the measurement of these couplings. Different symmetry breaking scenarios imply different correlations among these couplings, whose measurement will then provide a means to probe the electroweak symmetry breaking sector.
In this contribution we give a short overview of the new Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation (CEEX) which is implemented in the new \KK MC event generator for the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f} +nγ$, $f=μ,τ,d,u,s,c,b$ with validity for center of mass energies from $τ$ lepton threshold to 1TeV, that is for LEP1, LEP2, SLC, future Linear Colliders, $b,c,τ$-factories etc. In CEEX effects due to photon emission from initial beams and outgoing fermions are calculated in QED up to second-order, including all interference effects. Electroweak corrections are included in first-order, at the amplitude level…

Consideration is being given to upgrading the SuperKEKB e$^+$e$^-$ collider with polarized electron beams, which would open a new program of precision electroweak physics at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58GeV, the mass of the $Υ(4S)$. These measurements include $\sin^2θ_W$ obtained via left-right asymmetry measurements of e$^+$e$^-$ transitions to pairs of electrons, muons, taus, charm and b-quarks. The precision obtainable at SuperKEKB will match that of the LEP/SLC world average and will thereby probe the neutral current couplings with unprecedented precision at a new energy scale sensitive…
Results from the new Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ are presented. This first version simulates Hadron Emission Reactions With Interfering Gluons in electron-positron annihilation. The parton shower evolution is carried out using new evolution variables suited to describing radiation from heavy quarks as well as light partons. The partonic final state is fragmented into hadrons by means of an improved cluster hadronization model. The results are compared with a wide variety of data from LEP and SLC.
We present the convolution integral for fermion pair production in the electroweak standard theory to order O(alpha) including also soft photon exponentiation. The result is complete in the sense that it includes initial and final state radiation and their interference. From the basic result - analytic formulae for the differential cross section - we also derive the corresponding expressions for total cross section and integrated forward-backward asymmetry. The numerical importance of different contributions for the analysis of experiments at LEP/SLC energies is discussed.
We study large top quark mass effects on low energy physics in the chiral Lagrangian formulated electroweak theories. We show that these radiative corrections can be easily obtained from a set of Feynman diagrams involving only the scalar Goldstone bosons and the fermions when the contributions of the order $g$ (the weak coupling) are ignored. Using CERN LEP and SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) data we constrain on the nonstandard couplings, which might originate from the spontaneous symmetry-breaking sector, of the top quark to the electroweak gauge bosons.
We discuss New Physics effects in fermion pair production at LC in the framework of the ``Z-peak subtracted approach'', a theoretical scheme that exploits the experimental measurements at LEP1 and SLC as input parameters. In particular, we discuss the role of the longitudinal polarization asymmetry $A_{LR,μ}$ which turns out to be a very sensitive probe to New Physics of universal type. The extension of the method to non universal effects is discussed and an application is given in two examples: general contact interactions and low energy gravity models with graviton exchange.
We present the new Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation (CEEX), the older Exclusive Exponentiation (EEX) and the semi-analytical Inclusive Exponentiation (IEX) for the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f} +nγ$, $f=μ,τ,d,u,s,c,b$ with validity for centre of mass energies from $τ$ lepton threshold to 1TeV, that is for LEP1, LEP2, SLC, future Linear Colliders, $b,c,τ$-factories etc. They are based on Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exponentiation. In CEEX effects due to photon emission from initial beams and outgoing fermions are calculated in QED up to second-order, including all interference effects. Electroweak co…
We describe ZFITTER, a Fortran program based on a semi-analytical approach to fermion pair production in e+e- annihilation at a wide range of centre-of-mass energies, including the PETRA, TRISTAN, LEP1/SLC, and LEP2 energies. A flexible treatment of complete O(alpha) QED corrections and of some higher order contributions is made possible with three calculational chains containing different realistic sets of restrictions in the photon phase space. Numerical integrations are at most one-dimensional. Complete O(alpha) weak loop corrections supplemented by selected higher-order terms may be includ…
LEP and SLC provide accurate data on the process (e^+e^- -> f bar f) at the Z resonance. The GigaZ option at a future linear e^+e^- collider (ILC) will further improve these measurements. As a consequence, theory predictions with sufficiently smaller errors are necessary in order to fully exploit the experimental accuracies and to derive indirect bounds on the scales of new physics. Here we review the currently most accurate predictions of the Z pole observables (e.g. sin^2 theta_eff, Gamma_Z, sigma^0_had) in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). These predictions co…
We will describe radiative corrections to bremsstrahlung, focusing on applications to luminosity, fermion pair production, and radiative return at high-energy e+ e- colliders. A precise calculation of the Bhabha luminosity process was essential at SLC and LEP, and will be equally important in ILC physics. We will review the exact results for two-photon radiative corrections to Bhabha scattering which led to the precision estimates for the BHLUMI MC. We will also compare the implementation of the virtual photon correction to bremsstrahlung for fermion pair production in the KK MC to similar exa…
