Hybrid plasmonic nanoemitters based on the combination of quantum dot emitters (QD) and plasmonic nanoantennas open up new perspectives in the control of light. However, precise positioning of any active medium at the nanoscale constitutes a challenge. Here, we report on the optimal overlap of antenna's near-field and active medium whose spatial distribution is controlled via a plasmon-triggered 2-photon polymerization of a photosensitive formulation containing QDs. Au nanoparticles of various geometries are considered. The response of these hybrid nano-emitters is shown to be highly sensitive to the light polarization. Different light emission states are evidenced by photoluminescence measurements. These states correspond to polarization-sensitive nanoscale overlap between the exciting local field and the active medium distribution. The decrease of the QD concentration within the monomer formulation allows trapping of a single quantum dot in the vicinity of the Au particle. The latter objects show polarization-dependent switching in the single-photon regime.
Deep subwavelength integration of high-definition plasmonic nanostructures is of key importance for the development of future optical nanocircuitry for high-speed communication, quantum computation and lab-on-a-chip applications. So far the experimental realization of proposed extended plasmonic networks consisting of multiple functional elements remains challenging, mainly due to the multi-crystallinity of commonly used thermally evaporated gold layers. Resulting structural imperfections in individual circuit elements will drastically reduce the yield of functional integrated nanocircuits. He…
We review the basic physics behind light interaction with plasmonic nanoparticles. The theoretical foundations of light scattering on one metallic particle (a plasmonic monomer) and two interacting particles (a plasmonic dimer) are systematically investigated. Expressions for effective particle susceptibility (polarizability) are derived, and applications of these results to plasmonic nanoantennas are outlined. In the long-wavelength limit, the effective macroscopic parameters of an array of plasmonic dimers are calculated. These parameters are attributable to an effective medium corresponding…
Plasmonic nanoantennas have the ability to confine and enhance incident electromagnetic fields into very sub-wavelength volumes, while at the same time efficiently radiating energy to the far-field. These properties have allowed plasmonic nanoantennas to be extensively used for exciting quantum emitters-such as molecules and quantum dots-and also for the extraction of photons from them for measurements in the far-field. Due to electromagnetic reciprocity, it is expected that plasmonic nanoantennas radiate energy as efficiently as an external source can couple energy to them. In this paper, we …
Optical field localization at plasmonic tip-sample nanojunctions has enabled high spatial resolution chemical analysis through tip-enhanced linear optical spectroscopies, including Raman scattering and photoluminescence. More importantly, through a detailed anal…
We suggest a novel source of polarization-entangled photon pairs based on a cross-shaped plasmonic nanoantenna driven by a single quantum dot. The integration of the nanoantenna with a metal mirror overcomes the fundamental tradeoff between the spontaneous emission (SE) enhancement and the extraction efficiency typical of microcavity and nanowire-based architectures. With a very-high extraction efficiency of entangled photons (~90%) at 1.55 um and large SE enhancement (~90) over a broad 330 nm spectral range, the proposed design will pave the way toward reliable integrated sources of nonclassi…
We introduce a scheme for generating entanglement between two quantum dots using a plasmonic waveguide made from an array of metal nanoparticles. We show that the scheme is robust to loss, enabling it to work over long distance plasmonic nanoparticle arrays, as well as in the presence of other imperfections such as the detuning of the energy levels of the quantum dots. The scheme represents an alternative strategy to the previously introduced dissipative driven schemes for generating entanglement in plasmonic systems. Here, the entanglement is generated by using dipole-induced interference eff…

Recent advances in near-field plasmonic metamaterials, such as nanoresonators or transducers, have demonstrated the ability to generate localized fields of high intensity, and thus maintain relatively large nanoscale heat gradients on the order of $10^1-10^2$~K/nm. A plasmonic near-field transducer (NFT) can achieve such large gradients, making population inversion achievable within phononic media. We herein develop a thermal nanomachine composed of a nanoscale phononic laser using InGaAs quantum dot media where an NFT serves as the plasmonic energy source. We show, on demand, the generation o…
We present a practical new method for fabricating a coupled single quantum emitter-plasmonic nanoantenna system. We consider plasmonic nanoantennas immersed in active host medium. Specifically shaped metal nanoantennas can exhibit strong magnetic properties in the optical spectral range due to the excitation of Magnetic Plasmon Resonance (MPR). A case when a metamaterial comprising such nanoantennas can demonstrate both "left-handiness" and negative permeability in the optical range is considered. We show that high losses predicted for optical "left- handed" materials can be compensated in the gain medium. Gains required to achieve local generation in such magnetic active metamaterials are calculated for…
Efficient manipulation and long distance transport of single-photons is a key component in nanoscale quantum optics. Our results show that the local hot-carrier generation at the dopant atom is significantly altered by the dopant element while the plasmonic response of the nanoparticle as a whole is not significantl…
Nanostars (NSTs) are spiky nanocrystals with plasmonic hot spots. In this study, we show that strong electromagnetic fields localized in the nanostar tips are able to generate large numbers of energetic (hot) electrons, which can be used for photochemistry. To compute plasmonic nanocrystals with complex shapes, we develop a quantum approach based on the effect of surface generation of hot electrons. We then apply this approach to nanostars, nanorods and nanospheres. We found that that the plasmonic nanostars with multiple hot spots have the best characteristics for optical generation of hot el…
Quantum aspects, such as electron tunneling between closely separated metallic nanoparticles, are crucial for understanding the plasmonic response of nanoscale systems. We explore quantum effects on the response of the conductively coupled metallic nanoparticle dimer. This is realized by stretching a nanorod, which leads to the formation of a narrowing atomic contact between the two nanorod ends. Based on first-principles time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations, we find a discontinuous evolution of the plasmonic response as the nanorod is stretched. This is especially pronounced …

An emitter in the vicinity of a metal nanostructure is quenched by its decay through non-radiative channels, leading to the belief in a zone of inactivity for emitters placed within $<$10nm of a plasmonic nanostructure. Here we demonstrate that in tightly-coupled plasmonic resonators forming nanocavities "quenching is quenched" due to plasmon mixing. Unlike isolated nanoparticles, plasmonic nanocavities show mode hybridization which massively enhances emitter excitation and decay via radiative channels. This creates ideal conditions for realizing single-molecule strong-coupling with plasmons, …
Interaction between plasmonic nanostructures and molecules is modeled based on the concept of quantized optical cavity for surface enhanced Raman scattering process. We have found that the background emission from plasmonic nanostructures is not constant as speculated ordinarily, it is enhanced accompanying with the molecules Raman scattering. The plasmonic nanostructures not only scatter elastically the energy coupling from the molecules excited states, but also radiate it inelastically as surface plasmon emission partly resulting an enhanced background. According to single nanoparticle exper…

In this work, we present a fully quantum theory of the plasmonic nanolaser, based on the maser model. Theory can be applied both to the microlasers with high Q-factor cavities and plasmonic nanolasers. We show that the latter is essentially a thresholdless device. We obtain the statistics of quanta, spectrum of the plasmonic radiation and the second-order coherence degree in the steady state. The limits of the model applicability are discussed in detail. All results are compared with the full numerical simulation.
Plasmonic nano-tweezers use intense electric field gradients to generate optical forces able to trap nano-objects in liquids. However, part of the incident light is absorbed into the metal, and a supplementary thermophoretic force acting on the nano-object arises from the resulting temperature gradient. Plasmonic nano-tweezers thus face the challenge of disentangling the intricate contributions of the optical and thermophoretic forces. Here, we show that commonly added surfactants can unexpectedly impact the trap performance by acting on the thermophilic or thermophobic response of the nano-ob…
The search for miniaturized components for nonlinear optical processes needs a way to overcome the efficiency loss due to the effective size reduction of the active medium. We investigate here a combination of a nanosized nonlinear dielectric crystal and metallic nanoantennas that benefits from both the intrinsic nonlinear conversion efficiency of the nonlinear medium and the local-field enhancement of plasmonic resonances in metallic nanostructures. The experimental results were compared to the simulated trapping force and a reasonable match was achieved. This plasmonic array is useful for lab-on-a-chip applications and has particular appeal for trapping multiple nanoparticles with predefined separations or arranged in patterns in order to stu…
We investigate the chiroptical response of a single plasmonic nanohelix interacting with a weakly-focused circularly-polarized Gaussian beam. The optical scattering at the fundamental resonance is characterized experimentally, and the chiral behavior of the nanohelix is explained based on a multipole analysis. The angularly resolved emission of the excited nanohelix is verified experimentally and it validates the theoretical results. Further, we study the first higher-order resonance and explain the formation of chiral dipoles in both cases.
We propose and theoretically verify an efficient mechanism of broadband coupling between incident light and on-chip dielectric slot waveguide by employing a tapered plasmonic nanoantenna. Nanoantenna receives free space radiation and couples it to a dielectric slot waveguide with the efficiency of up to 20% in a broad spectral range, having a small footprint as compared with the currently used narrowband dielectric grating couplers. We argue that the frequency selective properties of such nanoantennas also allow for using them as ultrasmall on-chip multiplexer/demultiplexer devices.
Using nanometer spatial resolution electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and cathodoluminescence (CL) mapping, we demonstrate that Au alloys containing a poor plasmonic metal (Pd) can nevertheless sustain multiple size-dependent localized surface plasmon resonances and observe strong field enhancement at Pd-rich tips, where the composition is in fact least favorable for plasmons. These Au/Pd stellated nanocrystals are also involved in substrate and interparticle coupling, as unraveled by EELS tilt series.
