By adding human-imperceptible noise to clean images, the resultant adversarial examples can fool other unknown models. Features of a pixel extracted by deep neural networks (DNNs) are influenced by its surrounding regions, and different DNNs generally focus on different discriminative regions in recognition. Motivated by this, we propose a patch-wise iterative algorithm -- a black-box attack towards mainstream normally trained and defense models, which differs from the existing attack methods manipulating pixel-wise noise. In this way, without sacrificing the performance of white-box attack, our adversarial examples can have strong transferability. Specifically, we introduce an amplification factor to the step size in each iteration, and one pixel's overall gradient overflowing the $ε$-constraint is properly assigned to its surrounding regions by a project kernel. Our method can be generally integrated to any gradient-based attack methods. Compared with the current state-of-the-art attacks, we significantly improve the success rate by 9.2\% for defense models and 3.7\% for normally trained models on average. Adversarial attacks on machine learning models have seen increasing interest in the past years. By making only subtle changes to the input of a convolutional neural network, the output of the network can be swayed to output a completely different result. The first attacks did this by changing pixel values of an input image slightly to fool a classifier to output the wrong class. Other approaches have tried to learn "patches" that can be applied to an object to fool detectors and classifiers. Some of these approaches have also shown that these attacks are feasible in the real-world, i.e. by mod…

Deep neural networks have been shown to be fooled rather easily using adversarial attack algorithms. Practical methods such as adversarial patches have been shown to be extremely effective in causing misclassification. However, these patches are highlighted using standard network interpretation algorithms, thus revealing the identity of the adversary. We show that it is possible to create adversarial patches which not only fool the prediction, but also change what we interpret regarding the cause of the prediction. Moreover, we introduce our attack as a controlled setting to measure the accura…
Deep learning based image recognition systems have been widely deployed on mobile devices in today's world. In recent studies, however, deep learning models are shown vulnerable to adversarial examples. One variant of adversarial examples, called adversarial patch, draws researchers' attention due to its strong attack abilities. Though adversarial patches achieve high attack success rates, they are easily being detected because of the visual inconsistency between the patches and the original images. Besides, it usually requires a large amount of data for adversarial patch generation in the lit…

Nowadays, cameras equipped with AI systems can capture and analyze images to detect people automatically. However, the AI system can make mistakes when receiving deliberately designed patterns in the real world, i.e., physical adversarial examples. Prior works have shown that it is possible to print adversarial patches on clothes to evade DNN-based person detectors. However, these adversarial examples could have catastrophic drops in the attack success rate when the viewing angle (i.e., the camera's angle towards the object) changes. To perform a multi-angle attack, we propose Adversarial Text…

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. In particular, object detectors may be attacked by applying a particular adversarial patch to the image. However, because the patch shrinks during preprocessing, most existing approaches that employ adversarial patches to attack object detectors would diminish the attack success rate on small and medium targets. This paper proposes a Frequency Module(FRAN), a frequency-domain attention module for guiding patch generation. This is the first study to introduce frequency domain attention to optimize the attack capabilities of adve…

Adversarial attacks on thermal infrared imaging expose the risk of related applications. Estimating the security of these systems is essential for safely deploying them in the real world. In many cases, realizing the attacks in the physical space requires elaborate special perturbations. These solutions are often \emph{impractical} and \emph{attention-grabbing}. To address the need for a physically practical and stealthy adversarial attack, we introduce \textsc{HotCold} Block, a novel physical attack for infrared detectors that hide persons utilizing the wearable Warming Paste and Cooling Past…

We study how to represent a video with implicit neural representations (INRs). Classical INRs methods generally utilize MLPs to map input coordinates to output pixels. While some recent works have tried to directly reconstruct the whole image with CNNs. However, we argue that both the above pixel-wise and image-wise strategies are not favorable to video data. Instead, we propose a patch-wise solution, PS-NeRV, which represents videos as a function of patches and the corresponding patch coordinate. It naturally inherits the advantages of image-wise methods, and achieves excellent reconstruction…

Recent research has demonstrated that Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial patches which introduce perceptible but localized changes to the input. Nevertheless, existing approaches have focused on generating adversarial patches on images, their counterparts in videos have been less explored. Compared with images, attacking videos is much more challenging as it needs to consider not only spatial cues but also temporal cues. To close this gap, we introduce a novel adversarial attack in this paper, the bullet-screen comment (BSC) attack, which attacks video recognition models…
In this paper, a learning-free color constancy algorithm called the Patch-wise Bright Pixels (PBP) is proposed. In this algorithm, an input image is first downsampled and then cut equally into a few patches. After that, according to the modified brightness of each patch, a proper fraction of brightest pixels in the patch is selected. Finally, Gray World (GW)-based methods are applied to the selected bright pixels to estimate the illuminant of the scene. Experiments on NUS $8$-Camera Dataset show that the PBP algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art learning-free methods as well as a broad ra…
Learning-based multi-view stereo (MVS) has gained fine reconstructions on popular datasets. However, supervised learning methods require ground truth for training, which is hard to be collected, especially for the large-scale datasets. Though nowadays unsupervised learning methods have been proposed and have gotten gratifying results, those methods still fail to reconstruct intact results in challenging scenes, such as weakly-textured surfaces, as those methods primarily depend on pixel-wise photometric consistency which is subjected to various illuminations. To alleviate matching ambiguity in…
The leading segmentation methods represent the output map as a pixel grid. We study an alternative representation in which the object edges are modeled, per image patch, as a polygon with $k$ vertices that is coupled with per-patch label probabilities. The vertices are optimized by employing a differentiable neural renderer to create a raster image. The delineated region is then compared with the ground truth segmentation. Our method obtains multiple state-of-the-art results: 76.26\% mIoU on the Cityscapes validation, 90.92\% IoU on the Vaihingen building segmentation benchmark, 66.82\% IoU fo…

We propose a new method for SAR image despeckling which leverages information drawn from co-registered optical imagery. Filtering is performed by plain patch-wise nonlocal means, operating exclusively on SAR data. However, the filtering weights are computed by taking into account also the optical guide, which is much cleaner than the SAR data, and hence more discriminative. To avoid injecting optical-domain information into the filtered image, a SAR-domain statistical test is preliminarily performed to reject right away any risky predictor. Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) aims to enhance the generalization of the learned model to other domains. The domain-invariant knowledge is transferred from the model trained on labeled source domain, e.g., video game, to unlabeled target domains, e.g., real-world scenarios, saving annotation expenses. Existing UDA methods for semantic segmentation usually focus on minimizing the inter-domain discrepancy of various levels, e.g., pixels, features, and predictions, for extracting domain-invariant knowledge. However, the primary intra-domain knowledge, such as context correlation inside an i…
Automatically extracting roads from satellite imagery is a fundamental yet challenging computer vision task in the field of remote sensing. Pixel-wise semantic segmentation-based approaches and graph-based approaches are two prevailing schemes. However, prior works show the imperfections that semantic segmentation-based approaches yield road graphs with low connectivity, while graph-based methods with iterative exploring paradigms and smaller receptive fields focus more on local information and are also time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for multi-task satellite imagery roa…

We introduce a novel approach to unsupervised and semi-supervised domain adaptation for semantic segmentation. Unlike many earlier methods that rely on adversarial learning for feature alignment, we leverage contrastive learning to bridge the domain gap by aligning the features of structurally similar label patches across domains. As a result, the networks are easier to train and deliver better performance. Our approach consistently outperforms state-of-the-art unsupervised and semi-supervised methods on two challenging domain adaptive segmentation tasks, particularly with a small number of ta…
Recently, contrastive learning-based image translation methods have been proposed, which contrasts different spatial locations to enhance the spatial correspondence. However, the methods often ignore the diverse semantic relation within the images. To address this, here we propose a novel semantic relation consistency (SRC) regularization along with the decoupled contrastive learning, which utilize the diverse semantics by focusing on the heterogeneous semantics between the image patches of a single image. To further improve the performance, we present a hard negative mining by exploiting the …
Feature embedding-based methods have shown exceptional performance in detecting industrial anomalies by comparing features of target images with normal images. However, some methods do not meet the speed requirements of real-time inference, which is crucial for real-world applications. To address this issue, we propose a new method called Fast Adaptive Patch Memory (FAPM) for real-time industrial anomaly detection. FAPM utilizes patch-wise and layer-wise memory banks that store the embedding features of images at the patch and layer level, respectively, which eliminates unnecessary repetitive …
We present a novel, real-time, semantic segmentation network in which the encoder both encodes and generates the parameters (weights) of the decoder. Furthermore, to allow maximal adaptivity, the weights at each decoder block vary spatially. For this purpose, we design a new type of hypernetwork, composed of a nested U-Net for drawing higher level context features, a multi-headed weight generating module which generates the weights of each block in the decoder immediately before they are consumed, for efficient memory utilization, and a primary network that is composed of novel dynamic patch-w…

Although great progress has been made on adversarial attacks for deep neural networks (DNNs), their transferability is still unsatisfactory, especially for targeted attacks. There are two problems behind that have been long overlooked: 1) the conventional setting of $T$ iterations with the step size of $ε/T$ to comply with the $ε$-constraint. In this case, most of the pixels are allowed to add very small noise, much less than $ε$; and 2) usually manipulating pixel-wise noise. However, features of a pixel extracted by DNNs are influenced by its surrounding regions, and different DNNs generally …
Zero-shot learning has been actively studied for image classification task to relieve the burden of annotating image labels. Interestingly, semantic segmentation task requires more labor-intensive pixel-wise annotation, but zero-shot semantic segmentation has only attracted limited research interest. Thus, we focus on zero-shot semantic segmentation, which aims to segment unseen objects with only category-level semantic representations provided for unseen categories. Image-level corruptions and perturbations degrade the performance of CNNs on different downstream vision tasks. Social media filters are one of the most common resources of various corruptions and perturbations for real-world visual analysis applications. The negative effects of these distractive factors can be alleviated by recovering the original images with their pure style for the inference of the downstream vision tasks. Assuming these filters substantially inject a piece of additional style information to the social media images, we can formulate the problem of recovering the original ve…

A well-known challenge in applying deep-learning methods to omnidirectional images is spherical distortion. In dense regression tasks such as depth estimation, where structural details are required, using a vanilla CNN layer on the distorted 360 image results in undesired information loss. In this paper, we propose a 360 monocular depth estimation pipeline, OmniFusion, to tackle the spherical distortion issue. Our pipeline transforms a 360 image into less-distorted perspective patches (i.e. tangent images) to obtain patch-wise predictions via CNN, and then merge the patch-wise results for fina…

Digital image inpainting is an interpolation problem, inferring the content in the missing (unknown) region to agree with the known region data such that the interpolated result fulfills some prior knowledge. Low-rank and nonlocal self-similarity are two important priors for image inpainting. Based on the nonlocal self-similarity assumption, an image is divided into overlapped square target patches (submatrices) and the similar patches of any target patch are reshaped as vectors and stacked into a patch matrix. Such a patch matrix usually enjoys a property of low rank or approximately low rank…
Implicit Neural Representations (INR) have recently shown to be powerful tool for high-quality video compression. However, existing works are limiting as they do not explicitly exploit the temporal redundancy in videos, leading to a long encoding time. Additionally, these methods have fixed architectures which do not scale to longer videos or higher resolutions. To address these issues, we propose NIRVANA, which treats videos as groups of frames and fits separate networks to each group performing patch-wise prediction. This design shares computation within each group, in the spatial and tempor…
Recent advances in single-frame object detection and segmentation techniques have motivated a wide range of works to extend these methods to process video streams. In this paper, we explore the idea of hard attention aimed for latency-sensitive applications. Instead of reasoning about every frame separately, our method selects and only processes a small sub-window of the frame. Our technique then makes predictions for the full frame based on the sub-windows from previous frames and the update from the current sub-window. The latency reduction by this hard attention mechanism comes at the cost …

Adversarial Examples (AEs) can deceive Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) and have received a lot of attention recently. However, majority of the research on AEs is in the digital domain and the adversarial patches are static, which is very different from many real-world DNN applications such as Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) systems in autonomous vehicles. In TSR systems, object detectors use DNNs to process streaming video in real time. From the view of object detectors, the traffic sign`s position and quality of the video are continuously changing, rendering the digital AEs ineffective in the phys…

Pixel-wise classification in remote sensing identifies entities in large-scale satellite-based images at the pixel level. Few fully annotated large-scale datasets for pixel-wise classification exist due to the challenges of annotating individual pixels. Training data scarcity inevitably ensues from the annotation challenge, leading to overfitting classifiers and degraded classification performance. The lack of annotated pixels also necessarily results in few hard examples of various entities critical for generating a robust classification hyperplane. To overcome the problem of the data scarcit…
This paper presents a patch-wise low-rank based image denoising method with constrained variational model involving local and nonlocal regularization. On one hand, recent patch-wise methods can be represented as a low-rank matrix approximation problem whose convex relaxation usually depends on nuclear norm minimization (NNM). Here, we extend the NNM to the nonconvex schatten p-norm minimization with additional weights assigned to different singular values, which is referred to as the Weighted Schatten p-Norm Minimization (WSNM). An efficient algorithm is also proposed to solve the WSNM problem…

Vision transformers (ViTs) have demonstrated impressive performance and stronger adversarial robustness compared to Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). On the one hand, ViTs' focus on global interaction between individual patches reduces the local noise sensitivity of images.
