High energy neutrinos and anti-neutrinos ($\gtrsim$ 100 GeV) can inject energetic electromagnetic particles into the baryon-photon plasma in the high redshift universe through electroweak showers from electroweak bremsstrahlung, inelastic scattering with the background electrons and nucleons, and by pair-production of standard model particles on background neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. In this paper, we evolve the particle cascades of high energy non-thermal neutrinos injections, using dark matter decay as a specific example, including relevant collision processes of these neutrinos with the background particles and taking into account the expansion of the universe. We study the effect of these non-thermal neutrino injections on the CMB spectral shape and abundance of light elements produced in the big bang nucleosynthesis. We show that CMB spectral distortions and abundance of light elements can constrain neutrino energy density at the recombination, parameterized as contribution to $N_{\rm{eff}}$, from high energy neutrino injection. These constraints are stronger by several orders of magnitudes compared to the CMB anisotropy constraints. We also show that CMB spectral distortions can probe neutrino injections to significantly higher redshifts ($z>2\times 10^6$) as compared to pure electromagnetic energy injection.
We investigate whether an Early-Universe stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) can account for the common spectrum process reported by NANOGrav, while also being consistent with current and projected CMB measurements of extra radiation. We compute the contribution of effective number of relativistic species, $ΔN_{eff}$, for a number of Early-Universe models proposed to explain the pulsar timing array (PTA) spectrum. We demonstrate that models predicting $ΔN_{eff}$ above the CMB limit would be firmly excluded, implying that the NANOGrav signal in tension with these bounds must instead…
As a physical and sufficient compression of the full CMB data, the CMB distance priors, or shift parameters, have been widely used and provide a convenient way to include CMB data when obtaining cosmological constraints. In this paper, we revisit this data vector and examine its stability under different cosmological models. We find that the CMB distance priors are an accurate substitute for the full CMB data when probing dark energy dynamics. This is true when the primordial power spectrum model is directly generalized from the power spectrum of the model used in the derivation of the distanc…
We discuss the secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy due to kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect from ionized bubbles around individual quasars prior to the reionization of the Universe. The bubbles create local ionization modulations which move with the large scale structure linear bulk flow and act as sources for kSZ. We improve upon previous calculations of this effect, using a halo model based description of quasar abundance, and find that the kSZ distortion power spectrum, $C_\ell$, from the bubbles to be sub-dominant to kSZ from patchy reionization driven by galaxies.…
We consider a cosmological lepton asymmetry in the form of neutrinos and impose new expected sensitivities on such asymmetry through the degeneracy parameter ($ξ_ν$) by using some future CMB experiment configurations, such as CORE and CMB-S4. Taking the default scenario with three neutrino states, we find $ξ_μ = 0.05 \pm 0.10 \, (\pm \, 0.04)$, from CORE (CMB-S4) at 95 percent CL, respectively. Also, within this scenario, we evaluate the neutrino mass scale, obtaining that the normal hierarchy mass scheme is privileged. Our results are an update concerning on the cosmological lepton asymmetry …
CMB photons travel from the last scattering surface, when the primary CMB has been generated, along the surface of the light cone to us. During their travel, they are affected by many secondary effects such as the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect and CMB lensing. These CMB secondary effects modify the CMB primary power spectrum adding degeneracies and decreasing the sensibility to primordial parameters. The possibility to reconstruct the primary CMB anisotropies will allow us to have a more direct observable to test the physics of the early universe. We propose to study the imprint of features in…
Residual foreground contamination by thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect from galaxy clusters in cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps propagates into the reconstructed CMB lensing field, and thus biases the intrinsic cross-correlation between CMB lensing and large-scale structure (LSS). Through stacking analysis, we show that residual tSZ contamination causes an increment of lensing convergence in the central part of the clusters and a decrement of lensing convergence in the cluster outskirts. We quantify the impact of residual tSZ contamination on cross-correlations between the Planck 20…
We consider the effect of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) frequency spectral distortions arising due to the Compton scattering of the anisotropic radiation on Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) clusters. We derive the correction to the thermal SZ effect due to the presence of multipoles with $\ell=1,2,3$ in the anisotropy of the CMB radiation. We show that this effect gives us an opportunity for an independent evaluation of the CMB dipole, quadrupole and octupole angular anisotropy in our location using distorted signal from the nearby galaxy clusters and to distinguish between the Sachs-Wolfe (SW)…
We evaluate the degradation of the accuracy of the component separation between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and foreground components caused by neglect of absorption of the monopole component of the CMB by the galactic interstellar matter. The amplitude of the temperature anisotropy caused by the CMB shadow, due to dust components, is about 1 uK. This value is comparable to the required noise level necessary to probe non-Gaussianity studies with upcoming CMB experiments. In addition, the amplitude of the polarization caused by the CMB shadow due to dust is comparable to or larger tha…
Kinetic Sunyaev Zeldovich effect in an anisotropic CMB model: measuring low multipoles of the CMB at higher redshifts using intensity and polarization spectral distortions
Upcoming measurements of the small-scale primary cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization power spectra ($TT$/$TE$/$EE$) are anticipated to yield transformative constraints on new physics, including the effective number of relativistic species in the early universe ($N_{\rm eff}$). However, at multipoles $\ell \gtrsim 3000$, the primary CMB power spectra receive significant contributions from gravitational lensing. While these modes still carry primordial information, their theoretical modeling requires knowledge of the CMB lensing convergence power spectrum, $C_L^{κκ}$, …
A measurement of the sum of neutrino masses is one of the main applications of upcoming measurements of gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). This measurement can be confounded by modelling uncertainties related to so-called "baryonic effects" on the clustering of matter, arising from gas dynamics, star formation, and feedback from active galactic nuclei and supernovae. In particular, a wrong assumption about the form of baryonic effects on CMB lensing can bias a neutrino mass measurement by a significant fraction of the statistical uncertainty. In this paper, we inve…
Measurements of gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) hold the promise of yielding unique insights into cosmology at high redshift. Uncertainties due to baryonic effects associated with galaxy formation and evolution, including gas cooling, star formation, and feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and supernovae, have typically been neglected when forecasting the sensitivity of future CMB surveys. In this paper, we determine the impact of these effects using four suites of hydrodynamical simulations which incorporate various prescriptions for baryonic processes, n…
As recently pointed out in Ref. [Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 96}, 8, 083502 (2017)] the evolution of the linear matter perturbations in nonadiabatic dynamical dark energy models is almost indistinguishable (quasi-degenerated) to the standard $Λ$CDM scenario. In this work we extend this analysis to CMB observables in particular the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect and its cross-correlation with large scale structure. We find that this feature persists for such CMB related observable reinforcing that new probes and analysis are necessary to reveal the nonadiabatic features in the dark energy sector.
We investigate the impact of non-Gaussian lensing deflections on measurements of the CMB lensing power spectrum. We find that the false assumption of their Gaussianity significantly biases these measurements in current and future experiments at the percent level. The bias is detected by comparing CMB lensing reconstructions from simulated CMB data lensed with Gaussian deflection fields to reconstructions from simulations lensed with fully non-Gaussian deflection fields. The non-Gaussian deflections are produced by ray-tracing through snapshots of an N-body simulation and capture both the non-G…
