Strontium ruthenates have many similarities with copper oxide superconductors and are of particular interest for the investigation of the mechanisms and conditions which lead to high-temperature superconductivity. We report here on multiple experimental indications of superconductivity with onset at 40 K in strontium ruthenate doped by rhenium and selenium with chlorine used as the flux. The main experimental evidence arises from terahertz spectroscopy of this material followed by AC and DC magnetization, as well as measurements of its heat capacity and magnetoresistance. Structural and morphological studies revealed the heterophase nature of this polycrystalline material as well as the changes of lattice parameters relative to the original phases. Experimental data show a higher critical temperature on the surface compared to that of the bulk of the sample.
The possible superconducting states of strontium ruthenate (Sr$_2$RuO$_4$) are organized into irreducible representations of the point group $D_{4h}$, with a special emphasis on nodes occurring within the superconducting gap. Our analysis covers the cases with and without spin-orbit coupling and takes into account the possibility of inter-orbital pairing within a three-band, tight-binding description of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. No dynamical treatment if performed: we are confining ourselves to a group-theoretical analysis. The case of uniaxial deformations, under which the point group symmetry is reduce…
We propose a simple way to stabilize half-quantum vortices in superconducting strontium ruthenate, assuming the order parameter is of chiral $p_x + ip_y$ symmetry, as is suggested by recent experiments. The method, first given by Salomaa and Volovik in the context of Helium-3, is very naturally suited for strontium ruthenate, which has a layered, quasi-two-dimensional, perovskite crystal structure. We propose possible experiments to detect their non abelian-braiding statistics. These experiments are of potential importance for topological quantum computation.
It has been recognized that the condensation of spin-triplet Cooper pairs requires not only the broken gauge symmetry but also the spin ordering as well. One consequence of this is the possibility of the Cooper-pair spin current analogous to the magnon spin current in magnetic insulators, the analogy also extending to the existence of the Gilbert damping of the collective spin-triplet dynamics. The recently fabricated heterostructure of the thin film of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3 on the bulk Sr2RuO4, the best-known candidate material for the spin-triplet superconductor, offers a promisin…
Ceramic samples of Sr2RuO(4-y)Sy (y=0.03-1.2) with intended isovalent substitution of oxygen by sulfur have been synthesized and explored in the temperature range 4-300K. It is found that at a range of optimum sulfur substitution the magnetic response of ceramic samples reveals large diamagnetic signal with amplitudes approaching comparability with that of the YBCO-superconductors. Contrary to a pure ceramic Sr2RuO4, if properly optimized, the resistivity of sulfur-substituted samples has a metallic behavior except at lower temperatures where an upturn occurs. Both synthesis conditions and res…
We study the superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ on the bases of a phenomenological but orbital specific description of the electron-electron attraction and a realistic quantitative account of the electronic structure in the normal state. We found that a simple model which features both `in plane' and `out of plane' coupling with strengths $U_{\parallel}=40$meV and $U_{\perp}=48$meV respectively reproduced the experimentally observed power law behaviour of the low temperature specific heat $C_v(T)$, superfluid density $n_s(T)$ and thermal conductivity in quantitative detail. Moreover, it pr…
On the basis of a three orbital model and an effective attractive interaction between electrons we investigate the possible superconducting states, with $p$ and $f$-wave internal symmetry, of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. For an orbital dependent interaction which acts between in plane and out of plane nearest neighbour Ruthenium atoms we find a state for which the gap in the quasi-particle spectra has a line node on the $α$ and $β$ sheets of the Fermi Surface, but it is complex with no nodes on the $γ$-sheet. We show that this state is consistent with all the available experimental data. In particular, we p…
The superconducting order parameter of strontium ruthenate is the center of a lasting puzzle calling for theoretical studies that include the seldom-considered effects of spin-orbit coupling and the frequency-dependence of the order parameters. Here we generalize the frequency-dependent theory of superconductivity mediated by spin and charge fluctuations to include spin-orbit coupling in multi-orbital systems and we characterize the superconducting states using the spin-parity-orbital-time $SPOT$ quantum numbers, group theory, and phase distributions in the complex plane. We derive a pseudospi…
Determination of the orbital symmetry of a state in spin triplet Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ superconductor is a challenge of considerable importance. Most of the experiments show that the chiral state of the $\hat{z} (k_x \pm ik_y)$ type is realized and remains stable on lowering the temperature. Here we have studied the stability of various superconducting states of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Numerically we found that the chiral state is never the minimum energy. Alone among the five states studied it has $<{\bf \hat L}.{\bf \hat S} >=0$ and is therefore not affected to linear o…
We use the idea of the Wigner probability distribution (WPD) in a reduced scattering phase space (RPS) for the elastic scattering cross-section, with the help of a Tight-Binding (TB) numerical procedure allowing us to consider the anisotropic quantum effects, to phenomenologically predict several phases in these two novel unconventional superconductors. Unlike our previous works with pieces of evidence that these two compounds are in the unitary strong scattering regime and that superconductivity is suppressed by the atoms of strontium in both materials, several phases are built. In the case o…
The lasting puzzle of the superconducting order parameter of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ calls for theoretical studies that include seldom-considered effects. Here we include spin-orbit coupling effects on the electronic structure and then solve the linearized Eliashberg equation in a pseudospin basis, including the possibility that spin and charge fluctuations induce frequency-dependent superconducting order parameters. We find that spin-orbit coupling mixes even and odd contributions in orbital, spin and frequency spaces and that leading inter-pseudospin symmetries, B$_{1g}^+$ and A$_{2g}^-$, have intra-o…
The interplay between multiple bands, sizable multi-band electronic correlations and strong spin-orbit coupling may conspire in selecting a rather unusual unconventional pairing symmetry in layered Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. This mandates a detailed revisit of the normal state and, in particular, the $T$-dependent incoherence-coherence crossover. Using a modern first-principles correlated view, we study this issue in the actual structure of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ and present a unified and quantitative description of a range of unusual physical responses in the normal state. Armed with these, we propose tha…

The tri-layered perovskite Sr4Rh3O10 is reported for the first time. High-pressure and high-temperature heating (6 GPa and 1500 C) brought about successful preparation of a polycrystalline sample of the expected member at n=3 of Srn+1RhnO3n+1. Neutron-diffraction studies revealed the orthorhombic crystal structure (Pbam) at room temperature and 3.4 K. Local structure distortions rotationally tilt the RhO6 octahedra ~12 degrees in the perovskite-based blocks along the c-axis, and approximately a 20 % disorder was found in sequence of the alternating rotational tilt. The sample was also investig…
In 1994, an unconventional form of superconductivity was detected in strontium ruthenate. The discovery has shed light on the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity at high temperatures. In this work, after reviewing the theory of the elastic properties of Strontium ruthenate, an extension suitable to explain the sound speed experiments of Lupien et. al. \protect\cite{lup2} and Clifford et. al. \protect\cite{clif1} is carried out. It is found that the discontinuity in the elastic constant C$_{66}$ gives unambiguous experimental evidence that the \sr superconducting order parameter $Ψ$ has two components and shows a broken time-reversal symmetry state. A detailed study of the elastic behavior is performed by means of a phenomenological theory employing the Ginzburg-Landau forma…
A pivotal challenge posed by unconventional superconductors is to unravel how superconductivity emerges upon cooling from the generally complex normal state. Some of the most prominent unconventional superconductors are oxides: strontium titanate, strontium ruthenate, and the cuprates exhibit greatly different superconducting transition temperatures $T_c$, and although their respective superconducting pairing mechanisms remain unknown, they are thought to differ as well. Here we use nonlinear magnetic response, a probe that is uniquely sensitive to the superconducting precursor, to uncover rem…
There is intense controversy around the unconventional superconductivity in strontium ruthenate, where the various theoretical and experimental studies suggest diverse and mutually exclusive pairing symmetries. Currently, the investigation is solely focused on only one material, Sr2RuO4, and the field suffers from the lack of comparison targets. Here, employing a density functional theory based analysis, we show that the heterostructure composed of SrRuO3 and SrTiO3 is endowed with all the key characteristics of Sr2RuO4, and, in principle, can host superconductivity. Furthermore, we show that …
