To investigate the intrinsic mechanism for mixing enhancement by variable density behaviour, a canonical variable density (VD) mixing extracted from a supersonic streamwise vortex protocol, shock bubble interaction (SBI), is numerically studied and compared with a counterpart of passive scalar (PS) mixing. It is meaningful to observe that the maximum concentration decays much faster in VD SBI than in PS SBI regardless of the shock Mach number (Ma = 1.22 ~ 4). The quasi-Lamb-Oseen type velocity distribution in the PS SBI is found by analyzing the azimuthal velocity that stretches the bubble. Meanwhile, for the VD SBI, an additional stretching enhanced by the secondary baroclinic vorticity (SBV) production contributes to the faster-mixing decay. The underlying mechanism of the SBV-enhanced stretching is further revealed through the density and velocity difference between the shocked light bubble and the heavy ambient air. By combining the SBV-accelerated stretching model and the initial shock compression, a novel mixing time estimation for VD SBI is theoretically proposed by solving the advection-diffusion equation under a deformation field of an axisymmetric vortex with the additional SBV induced azimuthal velocity. Based on the mixing time model, a mixing enhancement number defined by the ratio of VD and PS mixing time further reveals the contribution from the variable-density effect, which implies a better control of density distribution for mixing enhancement in a supersonic streamwise vortex.
This paper presents an experimental analysis of flame-induced enstrophy transport in premixed swirl combustion at Karlovitz numbers between 20-50. Such flames posses a large-scale pressure field that -- in addition to the pressure fields associated with small-scale turbulent vortices -- can interact with density gradients to produce baroclinic torque. Simultaneous tomographic particle image velocimetry and formaldehyde planar laser induced fluorescence measurements are used to obtain high-resolution velocity and progress-variable fields. This allows statistical evaluation of the various terms …
Here we suggest an alternative understanding of the surface gravity wave propagation mechanism based on the baroclinic torque, which operates to translate the interfacial vorticity anomalies at the air-water interface. We demonstrate how the non-Boussinesq term of the baroclinic torque acts against the Boussinesq one to hinder wave propagation. By standard vorticity inversion and mirror imaging, we then show how the existence of the bottom boundary affects the two types of torque. Since the opposing non-Boussinesq torque results solely from the mirror image, it vanishes in the deep water limit…

Growth of the single-fluid single-mode Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) is revisited in 2D and 3D using fully compressible high-resolution simulations. We conduct a systematic analysis of the effects of perturbation Reynolds number ($Re_p$) and Atwood number ($A$) on RTI's late-time growth. Contrary to the common belief that single-mode RTI reaches a terminal bubble velocity, we show that the bubble re-accelerates when $Re_p$ is sufficiently large, consistent with [Ramaparabhu et al. 2006, Wei and Livescu 2012]. However, unlike in [Ramaparabhu et al. 2006], we find that for a sufficiently hig…
The effects of isothermal stratification strength on vorticity dynamics for single-mode Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) are examined using two dimensional fully compressible wavelet-based direct numerical simulations. The simulations model low Atwood number ($A=0.04$) RTI development for four different stratification strengths, corresponding to Mach numbers from 0.3 (weakly stratified) to 1.2 (strongly stratified), and for three different perturbation Reynolds numbers, from 5,000 to 20,000. All simulations use adaptive wavelet-based mesh refinement to achieve very fine spatial resolutions at…
The oscillatory flows present in an inkjet printhead can lead to strong deformations of the air-liquid interface at the nozzle exit. Such deformations may lead to an inward directed air jet with bubble pinch-off and the subsequent entrainment of an air bubble, which is highly detrimental to the stability of inkjet printing. Understanding the mechanisms of bubble entrainment is therefore crucial in improving print stability. In the present work, we use ultrafast X-ray phase-contrast imaging and direct numerical simulations based on the Volume-of-Fluid method to study the mechanisms underlying t…
The Stokes wave problem in a constant vorticity flow is formulated, by virtue of conformal mapping techniques, as a nonlinear pseudodifferential equation, involving the periodic Hilbert transform, which becomes the Babenko equation in the irrotational flow setting. The associated linearized operator is self-adjoint, whereby the modified Babenko equation is efficiently solved by means of the Newton-Conjugate Gradient method. For strong positive vorticity, a `fold' appears in the wave speed versus amplitude plane, and a `gap' as the vorticity strength increases, bounded by two touching waves, wh…
The interaction of an acoustic wave with a stratified fluid can drive strong streaming flows owing to the baroclinic production of fluctuating vorticity, as recently demonstrated by Chini et al. (J. Fluid Mech., 744, 2014, pp. 329). In the present investigation, a set of wave/mean-flow interaction equations is derived that governs the coupled dynamics of a standing acoustic wave mode of characteristic (small) amplitude ε and the streaming flow it drives in a thin channel with walls maintained at differing temperatures. Unlike classical Rayleigh streaming, the resulting mean flow arises at O(ε)…
In this research, the height, curvature and velocity of the bubble tip in Rayleigh-Taylor instability at arbitrary Atwood number with horizontal magnetic field are investigated. To support the earlier simulation and experimental results, the vorticity generation inside the bubble is introduced. It is found that, in early nonlinear stage, the temporal evolution of the bubble tip parameters depend essentially on the strength and initial perturbation of the magnetic field, although the asymptotic nature coincides with the non magnetic case. The model proposed here agrees with the previous linear,…
The Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability has long been an interesting subject due to its fundamental significance in scientific research, as well as its crucial role in engineering applications. In this study, the contribution of shock Mach number on the evolution of the RM instability induced by a shock-accelerated square light bubble is investigated numerically. The square bubble is composed of helium gas and the surrounding (ambient) gas is nitrogen. Three cases of incident shock strength are considered: Ms = 1.21, 1.7, and 2.1. An explicit mixed-type modal discontinuous Galerkin scheme with …
The paper investigates shock-induced vortical flows within inhomogeneous media of nonuniform thermodynamic properties. Numerical simulations are performed using an Eularian type mathematical model for compressible multi-component flow problems. The model, which accounts for pressure non-equilibrium and applies different equations of state for individual flow components, shows excellent capabilities for the resolution of interfaces separating compressible fluids as well as for capturing the baroclinic source of vorticity generation. The developed finite volume Godunov type computational approac…
The present study investigates the shock wave interactions involving stationary and moving wedges using a sharp interface immersed boundary method combined with a fifth order weighted essentially non oscillatory (WENO) scheme. Inspired by Schardins problem, which involves moving shock interaction with a finite triangular wedge, we study influences of incident shock Mach number and corner angle on the resulting flow physics in both stationary and moving conditions. The present study involves three incident shock Mach numbers (1.3, 1.9, 2.5) and three corner angles (60deg, 90deg, 120deg), while …
Based on the solution of Atanasiu et al. (2004), a theoretical model for axisymmetric vortex flows is derived in the present study by solving the vorticity transport equation for an inviscid, incompressible fluid in cylindrical coordinates. The model can describe a variety of axisymmetric flows with particular boundary conditions at a moderately high Reynolds number. This paper shows one example: a high Reynolds number laminar vortex ring. The model can represent a family of vortex rings by specifying the modulus function using a Rayleigh distribution function. The characteristics of this vort…
We consider two cases of interaction between a planar shock and a cylindrical density interface. In the first case (planar normal shock), the axis of the gas cylinder is parallel to the shock front, and baroclinic vorticity deposited by the shock is predominantly two-dimensional (directed along the axis of the cylinder). In the second case, the cylinder is tilted, resulting in an oblique shock interaction, and a fully three-dimensional shock-induced vorticity field. The statistical properties of the flow for both cases are analyzed based on images from two orthogonal visualization planes, usin…
Introducing a fluid microjet into the boundary layer to increase fluid momentum and hence delay separation is a method for actively controlling a flow separation region. The present work numerically analyzed the control of a separation bubble behind a ramp. For this purpose, we first verified the numerical results for a flow (without a jet) over the ramp against reliable experimental studies from the literature. Next, the effects of introducing a microjet to the flow were also verified. A jet was then placed at three different distances above the ramp to study its impact on various parameters,…
Vorticity distributions in axisymmetric vortex rings produced by a piston-pipe apparatus are numerically studied over a range of Reynolds numbers, $\mathrm{Re}$, and stroke-to-diameter ratios, $L/D$. It is found that a state of advective balance, such that $ζ\equiv ω_ϕ/r \approx F(ψ, t)$, is achieved within the region (called the vortex ring bubble) enclosed by the dividing streamline. Here $ζ\equivω_ϕ/r$ is the ratio of azimuthal vorticity to cylindrical radius, and $ψ$ is the Stokes streamfunction in the frame of the ring. Some but not all of the $\mathrm{Re}$ dependence in the time evolutio…
Numerical simulation is carried out to study the phenomenon of vortex breakdown in an enclosed cylinder. The energy gradient theory is used to explain the vortex breakdown in the cylinder with consideration of centrifugal force, Coriolis force, angular momentum and azimuthal vorticity. The research results show that the large value of energy gradient function K is mainly located at the centerline and the region between the circulation vortices on both sides of the cylinder and the vortex breakdown bubbles at the centerline. It is found that the position of the local peak value of the energy gr…
