Novel materials, with enhanced light-matter interaction capabilities, play an essential role in achieving the lofty goals of nonlinear optics. Recently, Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) media have emerged as a promising candidate to enable the enhancement of several nonlinear processes including refractive index modulation and harmonic generation. Here, we analyze the optical nonlinearity of ENZ media to clarify the commonalities with other nonlinear media and its unique properties. We focus on transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) as the family of ENZ media with near zero permittivity in the near-infrared (telecom) band. We investigate the instantaneous and delayed nonlinearities. By identifying their common origin from the band nonparabolicity, we show that their relative strength is entirely determined by a ratio of the energy and momentum relaxation (or dephasing) times. Using this framework, we compare ENZ materials against the many promising nonlinear media that have been investigated in literature and show that while ENZ materials do not radically outpace the strength of traditional materials in either the fast or slow nonlinearity, they pack key advantages such as an ideal response time, intrinsic slow light enhancement, and broadband nature in a compact platform making them a valuable tool for ultrafast photonics applications for decades to come.
Strong nonlinear materials have been sought after for decades for applications in telecommunications, sensing, and quantum optics. Gallium-doped zinc oxide is a II-VI transparent conducting oxide that shows promising nonlinearities similar to indium tin oxide and aluminum-doped zinc oxide for the telecommunications band. Here we explore its nonlinearities in the epsilon near zero (ENZ) region and show n2,eff values on the order of 4.5x10-3 cm2GW-1 for IR pumping on 200-300 nm thin films. Measuring nonlinear changes in transmission and reflection with a white light source probe in the near-IR w…
We show the formation of slow optical solitons in the asymmetric coupled double quantum-wells (CQW) via a two-photon Raman resonance. With the consideration of real parameters in AlGaAs-based CQW, we indicate the possibility to have cancellation of the linear absorption and giant Kerr nonlinearities. With the controllable balance between dispersion and nonlinear effects in these solid-state based devices, this work may provide a practical platform for nonlinear optical signal processing.
We propose a scheme to realize nonlinear coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at the nanoscale using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) plasmonic waveguides. The general conditions to achieve CPA in a linear ENZ plasmonic waveguide are analyzed and presented. The proposed ENZ waveguides support an effective ENZ response at their cut-off frequency, where the CPA effect occurs under the illumination of two counter-propagating plane waves with equal amplitudes and appropriate phase distributions. In addition, the strong and uniform field enhancement inside the nanochannels of the waveguides at the ENZ resonanc…
We investigate adiabatic frequency conversion using epsilon near zero (ENZ) materials and show that while the maximum frequency conversion for a given change of permittivity does not exhibit increase in the vicinity of ε=0 condition. However, that change can be achieved in a shorter length, and if the pump is also in the ENZ vicinity, at a lower pump intensity. This slow propagation effect makes the conversion efficiency in the ENZ material comparable to that in microresonators and other structured slow light schemes, but unlike the latter no nanofabrication is required for ENZ materials which…
We present a nanoscale active plasmonic waveguide system consisting of an array of periodic slits that can exhibit exceptional points and spectral singularities leading to several novel functionalities. The proposed symmetric active system operates near its cut-off wavelength and behaves as an effective epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) medium. We demonstrate the formation of an exceptional point (EP) that is accessed with very low gain coefficient values, a unique feature of the proposed nanoscale symmetric plasmonic configuration. Reflectionless ENZ transmission and perfect loss-compensation are reali…
The epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) tunneling phenomenon allows full transmission of waves through a narrow channel even in the presence of a strong geometric mismatch. Here we experimentally demonstrate nonlinear control of the ENZ tunneling by an external field, as well as self-modulation of the transmission resonance due to the incident wave. Using a waveguide section near cut-off frequency as the ENZ system, we introduce a diode with tunable and nonlinear capacitance to demonstrate both of these effects. Our results confirm earlier theoretical ideas on using an ENZ channel for dielectric sensing, …
Optical materials with vanishing dielectric permittivity, known as epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials, have been shown to possess enhanced nonlinear optical responses in their ENZ region. These strong nonlinear optical properties have been firmly established in homogeneous materials; however, it is as of yet unclear whether metamaterials with effective optical parameters can exhibit a similar enhancement. Here, we probe an optical ENZ metamaterial composed of a subwavelength periodic stack of alternating Ag and SiO$_2$ layers and measure a nonlinear refractive index $n_2 = (1.2 \pm 0.1) \times …

Nonlinear propagation experiments in GaAs photonic crystal waveguides (PCW) were performed, which exhibit a large enhancement of third order nonlinearities, due to light propagation in a slow mode regime, such as two-photon absorption (TPA), optical Kerr effect and refractive index changes due to TPA generated free-carriers. A theoretical model has been established that shows very good quantitative agreement with experimental data and demonstrates the important role that group velocity plays. These observations give a strong insight into the use of PCWs for optical switching devices.

Slow light is a fascinating physical effect, raising fundamental questions related to our understanding of light-matter interactions as well as offering new possibilities for photonic devices. From the first demonstrations of slow light propagation in ultra-cold atomic gasses, solid-state Ruby and photonic crystal structures, focus has shifted to applications, with slow light offering the ability to enhance and control light-matter interactions. The demonstration of tuneable delay lines, enhanced nonlinearities and spontaneous emission, enlarged spectral sensitivity and increased phase shifts …
We investigate the nonlinear optical response of suspended 1D photonic crystal nanocavities fabricated on a silicon nitride chip. Strong thermo-optical nonlinearities are demonstrated for input powers as low as $2\,μ\text{W}$ and a self-sustained pulsing regime is shown to emerge with periodicity of several seconds. As the input power and laser wavelength are varied the temporal patterns change in period, duty cycle and shape. This dynamics is attributed to the multiple timescale competition between thermo-optical and thermo-optomechanical effects and closely resembles the relaxation oscillati…
Slow light has been widely utilized to obtain enhanced nonlinearities, enhanced spontaneous emissions, and increased phase shifts owing to its ability to promote light-matter interactions. By incorporating a graphene microheater on a slow-light silicon photonic crystal waveguide, we experimentally demonstrated an energy-efficient graphene microheater with a tuning efficiency of 1.07 nm/mW and power consumption per free spectral range of 3.99 mW. The rise and decay times (10% to 90%) were only 750 ns and 525 ns, which, to the best of our knowledge, are the fastest reported response times for mi…
Optical solitons-stable waves balancing delicately between nonlinearities and dispersive effects-have advanced the field of ultrafast optics and dynamics, with contributions spanning supercontinuum generation and soliton fission, to optical event horizon, Hawking radiation, and optical rogue waves, amongst others. Here we investigate picojoule soliton dynamics in silicon slow-light photonic-bandgap waveguides under the influence of Drude-modeled free-carrier induced nonlinear effects. Using real-time and single shot amplified dispersive Fourier transform spectroscopy simultaneously with high-f…
We study the propagation of few-cycle optical solitary waves in a nonlinear media under the combined action of quadratic, cubic and quintic nonlinearities in a large phase-mismatched second harmonic (SHG) process. Exact bright and dark soliton solutions to the nonlinear evolution equation for cascaded quadratic media beyond the slowly varying envelope approximations is reported. The analytical solutions obtained are verified through numerical simulations.
Slow light propagation in structured materials is a highly promising approach for realizing on-chip integrated photonic devices based on enhanced optical nonlinearities. One of the most successful research avenues consists in engineering the band dispersion of light-guiding photonic crystal (PC) structures. The primary goal of such devices is to achieve slow-light operation over the largest possible bandwidth, with large group index, minimal index dispersion, and constant transmission spectrum. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of to date record high GBP in silicon-based couple…
We observe unique absorption resonances in silver/silica multilayer-based epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials that are related to radiative bulk plasmon-polariton states of thin-films originally studied by Ferrell (1958) and Berreman (1963). In the local effective medium, metamaterial descrip- tion, the unique effect of the excitation of these microscopic modes is counterintuitive and captured within the complex propagation constant, not the effective dielectric permittivities. Theoretical anal- ysis of the band structure for our metamaterials shows the existence of multiple Ferrell-Berreman…
We interpret the purely spectral forward Maxwell equation with up to 3${^{\rm rd}}$ order induced polarizations for pulse propagation and interactions in quadratic nonlinear crystals. The interpreted equation, also named nonlinear wave equation in frequency domain, includes both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, delayed Raman effects and anisotropic nonlinearities. The full potential of this wave equation is demonstrated by investigating simulations of solitons generated in the process of ultrafast cascaded second-harmonic generation. We show that a balance in the soliton delay can be achiev…
In this Letter, we show theoretically that the nonlinear photoionisation process of a noble gas inside a hollow-core photonic crystal fibre can be exploited in obtaining broadband supercontinuum generation via pumping close to the mid-infrared regime. The interplay between the Kerr and photoionisation nonlinearities is strongly enhanced in this regime. Photoionisation continuously modifies the medium dispersion, in which the refractive index starts to significantly decrease and approach the epsilon-near-zero regime. Subsequently, the self-phase modulation induced by the Kerr effect is boosted …
All optical switches offer advanced control over the properties of light at ultrafast timescales using optical pulses as both the signal and the control. Limited only by material response times, these switches can operate at terahertz speeds, essential for technology-driven applications such as all-optical signal processing and ultrafast imaging, as well as for fundamental studies such as frequency translation and novel optical media concepts such as photonic time crystals. In conventional systems, the switching time is determined by the relaxation response of a single active material, which i…
We introduce a versatile platform for studying nonlinear out-of-equilibrium physics. The platform is based on a slow light setup where an optical waveguide is interfaced with cold atoms to realize the driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a potential. We compare the proposed setup with similar setups using Bose-Einstein condensates and investigate the system's response under coherent driving for a lattice potential. The slow light setup provides novel angles in the study of nonlinear dynamics due to its advantages in introducing and modulating the driving, the extra tunability over the si…
We consider a class of nonlinear Schrodinger / Gross-Pitaevskii (NLS/GP) equations with periodic potentials, having an even symmetry. We construct "solitons", centered about any point of symmetry of the potential. For focusing (attractive) nonlinearities, these solutions bifurcate from the zero state at the lowest band edge frequency, into the semi-infinite spectral gap. Our results extend to bifurcations into finite spectral gaps, for focusing or defocusing (repulsive) nonlinearities under more restrictive hypotheses. Soliton nonlinear bound states with frequencies near a band edge are well-a…
