With the KATRIN experiment, the determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale down to cosmologically favored values has come into reach. We show that this measurement provides the missing link between the Standard Model and the dark sector in scotogenic models, where the suppression of the neutrino masses is economically explained by their only indirect coupling to the Higgs field. We determine the linear relation between the electron neutrino mass and the scalar coupling $λ_5$ associated with the dark neutral scalar mass splitting to be $λ_5=3.1\times10^{-9}\ m_{ν_e}/$eV. This relation then induces correlations among the DM and new scalar masses and their Yukawa couplings. Together, KATRIN and future lepton flavor violation experiments can then probe the fermion DM parameter space, irrespective of the neutrino mass hierarchy and CP phase.
We study the process $e^+ e^- \to γγν\barν$ in the context of a strong electroweak symmetry breaking model, which can be a source of events with two photons and missing energy at LEP2. We investigate bounds on the model assuming that no deviation is observed from the Standard Model within a given experimental error.
The rare K and B semileptonic decays into neutrino pairs are well-known to be extremely sensitive to non-standard physics in the quark sector. In this talk, their capabilities to signal New Physics in the leptonic sector, or even to reveal entirely new invisible sectors, are analyzed.
We explore signals of new physics with two Higgs bosons and large missing transverse energy at the LHC. Such a signature is characteristic of models for dark matter or other secluded particles that couple to the standard model through an extended scalar sector. Our goal is to provide search strategies and an interpretation framework for this new signature that are applicable to a large class of models. To this end, we define simplified models of hidden sectors leading to two different event topologies: symmetric decay, i.e., pair-produced mediators decaying each into a Higgs plus invisible fin…
It has been intensively discussed if modifications in the dynamics of the Universe at late times is able or not to solve the $H_0$ tension. On the other hand, it has also been argued that the $H_0$ tension is actually a tension on the supernova absolute magnitude $M_B$. In this work, we robustly constraint $M_B$ using Pantheon Supernovae Ia (SN) sample, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) data, and assess the $M_B$ tension by comparing three theoretical models, namely the standard $Λ$CDM, the $w$CDM and a non-gravitational interaction (IDE) between dark energ…
We propose a LHC search for dilepton resonances in association with large missing energy as a generic probe of TeV dark sector models. Such resonances can occur if the dark sector includes a U(1) gauge boson, or Z', which kinetically mixes with the Standard Model U(1). For small mixing, direct 2 to 1 production of the Z' is not visible in standard resonance searches due to the large Drell-Yan background. However, there may be significant production of the Z' boson in processes involving other dark sector particles, resulting in final states with a Z' resonance and missing transverse momentum. …
I analyze a fourth generation lepton sector in which the lightest particle is a stable Majorana neutrino. In this scenario fourth generation neutrinos have both a Dirac and Majorana mass, resulting in two Majorana neutrino mass eigenstates. A reanalysis of LEP's lower mass bound is performed on stable Majorana neutrinos from the Z width and the lower mass bound is loosened. I also extrapolate LEP's SUSY squark search with a 2 jet plus missing missing energy final state to the production and decay of a pair of heavy Majorana neutrinos; here it is expected that significant regions of the neutrin…
The extended Higgs sector, such as by a second Higgs doublet of type-II, provides portals to dark sector which contains missing particles at the LHC, e.g., dark matter (DM) particles. In this paper, working in the simplified model and taking into consideration the wide decay width effect of the mediator, we analyze the characteristic signatures of mono-$b$+MET and 2$b$+MET at the LHC. The latter signature was believed to be ineffective, while we found that, with the aid of razor shape analysis, it should be as important as the mono-$b$ signature. In the region of relatively low mediator mass (…
Current analyses of the LHC data put stringent bounds on strongly interacting supersymmetric particles, restricting the masses of squarks and gluinos to be above the TeV scale. However, the supersymmetric electroweak sector is poorly constrained. In this article we explore the consistency of possible LHC missing energy signals with the broader phenomenological structure of the electroweak sector in low energy supersymmetry models. As an example, we focus on the newly developed Recursive Jigsaw Reconstruction analysis by ATLAS, which reports interesting event excesses in channels containing di-…
We consider dark sectors with spontaneously broken gauge symmetries, where cascade decays of the dark sector fields naturally produce multi-Higgs boson final states along with dark matter. Our study focuses on two and three Higgs boson final states with missing energy using a multivariate analysis with Boosted Decision Trees. We find that the di-Higgs boson channel is quite promising for the $\bar b b + γγ$ and $\bar b b + \bar \ell \ell$ decay modes. The tri-Higgs boson final state with missing energy, on the other hand, appears to be beyond the reach of the LHC in analogous channels. This ma…

The presence of a non-baryonic Dark Matter (DM) component in the Universe is inferred from the observation of its gravitational interaction. The ATLAS and CMS experiments located at the LHC have developed a broad search program for DM candidates, including resonance searches for the mediator and searches with large missing transverse momentum. Additionally, searches have been conducted in models where the Higgs Sector and the Dark Sector are connected leading for example to invisible Higgs boson decays. The results of recent searches on 13 TeV $pp$ data, their interplay and interpretation are …
Recent studies have shown that searches in the mono-photon and missing energy final state can be used to discover dark matter candidates at the ILC. While an excess in this final state over the Standard Model background would indicate the existence of a dark sector, no detailed information about the internal structure of this sector can be inferred. Here, we demonstrate how just a few observables can discriminate between various realizations of dark sectors, including e.g. the spin of mediators.
The cosmological origin of both dark and baryonic matter can be explained through a unified mechanism called hylogenesis where baryon and antibaryon number are divided between the visible sector and a GeV-scale hidden sector, while the Universe remains net baryon symmetric. The "missing" antibaryons, in the form of exotic hidden states, are the dark matter. We study model-building, cosmological, and phenomenological aspects of this scenario within the framework of supersymmetry, which naturally stabilizes the light hidden sector and electroweak mass scales. Inelastic dark matter scattering on …
We propose a new search for light scalar singlets in rare meson decays. For tiny interactions, the scalar is long-lived at detector scales and decays into displaced pairs of leptons or light mesons. We show that Belle II has a remarkable potential to probe scalars in the GeV range with couplings as small as $10^{-5}$. The predicted sensitivity is higher than at the long-baseline experiments FASER and NA62. We also investigate signatures of invisibly decaying scalars in rare meson decays with missing energy.
I will briefly discuss the signatures and discovery prospects of several new physics models containing dark matter candidates at future lepton colliders. In particular, I will discuss the two models that, among other signatures, lead to electroweak gauge bosons and missing energy: the Inert Doublet Model, as well as the THDMa, a two Higgs doublet model with an additional pseudoscalar that serves as a portal to the dark sector. Results are mainly based on a Snowmass Whitepaper arXiv:2203.07913
Assuming dark matter is absolutely stable due to unbroken dark gauge symmetry and singlet operators are portals to the dark sector, we present a simple extension of the standard seesaw model that can accommodate all the cosmological observations as well as terrestrial experiments available as of now, including leptogenesis, extra dark radiation of $\sim 0.08$ (resulting in $N_{\rm eff} = 3.130$ the effective number of neutrino species), Higgs inflation, small and large scale structure formation, and current relic density of scalar DM ($X$). The Higgs signal strength is equal to one as in the S…
LHC searches with $τ$ leptons in the final state are always inclusive in missing-energy sources. A signal in the flavor-violating Higgs decay search, $h\toτμ$, could therefore equally well be due to a flavor conserving decay, but with an extended decay topology with additional invisible particles. We demonstrate this with the three-body decay $h\toτμφ$, where $φ$ is a flavorful mediator decaying to a dark-sector. This scenario can give thermal relic dark matter that carries lepton flavor charges, a realistic structure of the charged lepton masses, and explain the anomalous magnetic moment of t…
Pairs of Standard Model fermions form dimension-3 singlet operators that can couple to new dark sector states. This "fermion portal" is to be contrasted with the lower-dimensional Higgs, vector and neutrino singlet portals. We characterise its distinct phenomenology and place effective field theory bounds on this framework, focusing on the case of fermion portals to a pair of light dark sector fermions. We obtain current and projected limits on the dimension-6 effective operator scale from a variety of meson decay experiments, missing energy and long-lived particle searches at colliders, as we…
The $μν$SSM is a supersymmetric standard model that accounts for light neutrino masses and solves the $μ$ problem of the MSSM by simply using right-handed neutrino superfields. Since this mechanism breaks R-parity, a peculiar structure for the mass matrices is generated. The neutral Higgses are mixed with the right- and left-handed sneutrinos producing 8$\times$8 neutral scalar mass matrices. We analyse the Higgs sector of the $μν$SSM in detail, with special emphasis in possible signals at colliders. After studying in general the decays of the Higges, we focus on those processes that are genui…
The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider is a major upgrade of the KEK "$B$ factory" facility in Tsukuba, Japan. The machine is designed for an instantaneous luminosity of $8\times 10^{35}$~cm$^{-2}$\,s$^{-1}$, and the experiment is expected to accumulate a data sample of about 50 ab$^{-1}$ well within the next decade. With this amount of data, decays sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model can be studied with unprecedented precision. One promising set of modes are physics processes with missing energy such as $B^+\toτ^+ν_τ$, $B\to D^{(*)}τν_τ$, and $B\to K^{(*)}ν\barν$ decays.…
We explore the LHC phenomenology of an extension of warped higgsless models. The model is supersymmetric in the bulk and on the IR brane as introduced in [arXiv:0805.1379], corresponding to an emergence of a supersymmetric spectrum in the composite sector of the higgsless model. In particular, the lightest neutralino is rendered stable by an R parity and serves as a realistic cold dark matter candidate. The observation of missing energy signals at the LHC from LSP and NLSP production in association with third generation quarks is discussed based on simulations using WHIZARD.
A persistence of several anomalies in muon physics, such as the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift, hints at new light particles beyond the Standard Model. We address a subset of these models that have a new light scalar state with sizable couplings to muons and suppressed couplings to electrons. A novel way to search for such particles would be through muon beam-dump experiments by (1) missing momentum searches; (2) searches for decays with displaced vertices. The muon beams available at CERN and Fermilab present attractive opportunities for exploring the new sc…
We study the cosmology and LHC phenomenology of a consistent strongly interacting dark sector coupled to Standard Model particles through a generic vector mediator. We lay out the requirements for the model to be cosmologically viable, identify annihilations into dark vector mesons as the dominant dark matter freeze-out process and discuss bounds from direct detection. At the LHC the model predicts dark showers, which can give rise to semi-visible jets or displaced vertices. Existing searches for di-jet resonances and for missing energy mostly probe the parameter regions where prompt decays ar…
We investigate what could be learned about the absolute scale of neutrino masses from comparisons among the patterns within quark and lepton mass hierarchies. First, we observe that the existing information on neutrino masses fits quite well to the unexplained, but apparently present regularities in the quark and charged lepton sectors. Second, we discuss several possible mass patterns, pointing out that this quite generally leads towards hierarchical neutrino mass patterns especially disfavoring the vacuum solution.
It is found that the seesaw mechanism not only explain the smallness of neutrino masses but also account for the large mixing angles simultaneously, even if the unification of the neutrino Dirac mass matrix with that of up-type quark sector is realized. We show that provided the Majorana masses have hierarchical structure as is seen in the up-type quark sector and all mass matrices are real, we can reduce the information about the absolute values of neutrino masses through the data set of neutrino experiments. Especially for $θ_{13}=0$, we found that the neutrino masses are decided as $m_1:m_2…
Dark sectors with strong interactions have received considerable interest. Assuming the existence of a minimally coupled dark sector which runs to strong interactions in the infrared, we address the question whether the scaling behavior of this dark sector can be observed in missing energy signatures at present and future hadron colliders. We compare these findings to the concrete case of self-interacting dark matter and demonstrate that the energy dependence of high-momentum transfer final states can in principle be used to gain information about the UV structure of hidden sectors at future h…
We investigate the prospects for detecting light leptophilic dark sectors with a missing-momentum experiment at NA64 running in muon mode. In particular, we consider models in which dark matter connects to the visible sector through a lepton- or muon-specific scalar mediator. These scalars can also account for the $\sim 3.5σ$ discrepancy between the measured and predicted values of $(g-2)_μ$ . We emphasize the complementarity between NA64-$μ$ and other terrestrial and astrophysical probes.
The non-observation of dark matter (DM) by direct detection experiments suggests that any new interaction of DM with the Standard Model (SM) should be very weak. One of the simplest scenarios to achieve this is a dark sector that is charged under a new $U(1)_X$ symmetry, which is kinetically mixed with the SM hypercharge $U(1)_Y$. We briefly review the status of such a minimal setup and analyze in a second step how the picture is altered if also SM fields are charged under the new symmetry. We exemplify this for the case of a gauged $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ and show that this allows for a simultaneous…
After a fascinating phase of discoveries, neutrino physics still has a few mysteries such as the absolute mass scale, the mass hierarchy, the existence of CP violation in the lepton sector and the existence of right-handed neutrinos. It is also entering a phase of precision measurements. This is what motivates the NUFACT 11 conference which prepares the future of long baseline neutrino experiments. In this paper, we report the status of experimental neutrino physics. We focus mainly on absolute mass measurements, oscillation parameters and future plans for oscillation experiments.
We investigate the reach of the LHC Run 2 and that of a future circular hadron collider with up to 100 TeV centre of mass energy for the exploration of potential Dark Matter sectors. These dark sectors are conveniently and broadly described by simplified models. The simplified models we consider provide microscopic descriptions of interactions between the Standard Model partons and the dark sector particles mediated by the four basic types of messenger fields: scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector or axial-vector. Our analysis extends and updates the previously available results for the LHC at 8 and 1…
As no evidence for classic WIMP-based signatures of dark matter have been found at the LHC, several phenomenological studies have raised the possibility of accessing a strongly-interacting dark sector through new collider-event topologies. If dark mesons exist, their evolution and hadronization procedure are currently little constrained. They could decay promptly and result in QCD-like jet structures, even though the original decaying particles are dark sector ones; they could behave as semi-visible jets; or they could behave as completely detector-stable hadrons, in which case the final state…
The impact a new neutral light particle of spin 0, 1/2, 1, or 3/2 could have on the tiny width of a light Higgs boson is systematically analyzed. To this end, we include all the relevant effective interactions, whether renormalizable or not, and review the possible signatures in the Higgs decay modes with missing energy. This includes the fully invisible Higgs boson decay, as well as modes with SM gauge boson or fermions in the final state. In many cases, simply preventing these modes from being dominant suffices to set tight model-independent constraints on the masses and couplings of the new…
Neutrinoless double beta decay belongs to the most sensitive tools for the search of new physics beyond the standard model. The recent half life limit of the Heidelberg-Moscow experiment implies restrictive bounds on the absolute mass scale in the neutrino sector. Possible improvements by the GENIUS project provide a unique possibility to reconstruct the neutrino mass spectrum. Further constraints on new interactions in the neutrino sector are given in a model-independent way. Consequences for neutrino anomalies and theories beyond the standard model such as left-right symmetric models, R-pari…
In this paper, we examine the strategies and prospects for distinguishing between traditional dark-matter models and models with non-minimal dark sectors --- including models of Dynamical Dark Matter (DDM) --- at hadron colliders. For concreteness, we focus on events with two hadronic jets and large missing transverse energy at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). As we discuss, simple "bump-hunting" searches are not sufficient; probing non-minimal dark sectors typically requires an analysis of the actual shapes of the distributions of relevant kinematic variables. We therefore begin by identifyin…
The most general basis of operators parametrizing a low-scale departure from the SM particle content is constructed. The SM gauge invariance is enforced, and operators of lowest dimensions are retained separately for a new light neutral particle of spin 0, 1/2, 1, and 3/2. The basis is further decomposed into couplings to the SM Higgs/gauge fields, to pairs of quark/lepton fields, and to baryon/lepton number violating combinations of fermion fields. This basis is then used to systematically investigate the discovery potential of the rare FCNC decays of the K and B mesons with missing energy in…
We investigate solutions to the flavour anomalies in $B$ decays based on loop diagrams of a "split" dark sector characterised by the simultaneous presence of heavy particles at the TeV scale and light particles around and below the $B$-meson mass scale. We show that viable parameter space exists for solutions based on penguin diagrams with a vector mediator, while minimal constructions relying on box diagrams are in strong tension with the constraints from the LHC, LEP, and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. In particular, we highlight a regime where the mediator lies close to the $B$-…
We discuss the ordinary, non-supersymmetric SO(10) as a theory of fermion masses and mixings. We construct two minimal versions of the Yukawa sector based on $\bar{126}_H $ and either $10_H$ or $120_H$. The latter case is of particular interest since it connects the absolute neutrino mass scale with the size of the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_A$. It also relates the smallness of $V_{cb}$ with the largeness of $θ_A$. These results are based on the analytic study of the second and third generations. Furthermore, we discuss the structure of the light Higgs and the role of the Peccei-Quinn symmetr…
We investigate the phenomenology of light GeV-scale fermionic dark matter in $U(1)_{L_μ- L_τ}$ gauge extension of the Standard Model. Heavy neutral fermions alongside with a $S_1(\overline{3}$,$1$,$1/3$) scalar leptoquark and an inert scalar doublet are added to address the flavor anomalies and light neutrino mass respectively. The light gauge boson associated with $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ gauge group mediates dark to visible sector and helps to obtain the correct relic density. Aided with a colored scalar, we constrain the new model parameters by using the branching ratios of various $b \to sll$ and …
Using data from atmospheric neutrino mixing, and a simple functional form for mixing angles, the absolute values of three neutrino masses are calculated: $m_3\cong 5.37\times 10^{-2} eV$, $m_2\cong 1.94\times 10^{-2} eV$, $m_1\cong 1.46\times 10^{-2} eV$. The quantities relevant for solar neutrino mixing are calculated: $(m_2^2-m_1^2) \cong 1.63\times 10^{-4} eV^2$, with non-maximal mixing $\tan^2θ_\sol \cong 0.56$. The analysis gives a suggestion of a dynamical origin for the empirical, large CP-violating phase associated with an intrinsically, very small mixing angle in the quark sector.
If the length scale of possible extra dimensions is large enough, the effective Planck scale is lowered such that microscopic black holes could be produced in collisions of high-energy particles at colliders. These black holes evaporate through Hawking radiation of a handful of energetic particles drawn from the set of all kinematically and thermally allowed degrees of freedom, including dark matter. Here, we perform the first numerical black hole spectroscopic study of the dark sector. We find that if the next generation of colliders can produce microscopic black holes, then missing momentum …
Assuming 3-$ν$ mixing, massive Majorana neutrinos and neutrinoless double-beta (\betabeta-) decay generated only by the (V-A) charged current weak interaction via the exchange of the three Majorana neutrinos, we briefly review the predictions for the effective Majorana mass $\meff$ in \betabeta-decay and reanalyse the physics potential of future \betabeta-decay experiments to provide information on the type of neutrino mass spectrum, the absolute scale of neutrino masses, and Majorana CP-violation in the lepton sector. Using as input the most recent experimental results on neutrino oscillation…
The existence of an unparticle sector, weakly coupled to the standard model, would have a profound impact on supernova (SN) physics. Emission of energy into the unparticle sector from the core of SN1987A would have significantly shortened the observed neutrino burst. The unparticle interaction with nucleons, neutrinos, electrons and muons is constrained to be so weak that it is unlikely to provide any missing-energy signature at colliders. One important exception are models where scale invariance in the hidden sector is broken by the Higgs vacuum expectation value. In this case the SN emission…
Assuming ({\it i}) the seesaw mechanism works for neutrino masses and mixings, ({\it ii}) dark matter is absolutely stable due to unbroken $U(1)_X$ dark gauge symmetry, and ({\it iii}) the singlet fields ($H^\dagger H$ and $N_R$) are portal to the dark sector, we construct a simple model which is consistent with all the cosmological observations as well as terrestrial experiments available as of now, including leptogenesis, extra dark radiation of $\sim 8 %$ (resulting in $N_{\rm eff} = 3.130$ the effective number of neutrino species), Higgs inflation, small and large scale structure formation…
The clockwork mechanism allows extremely weak interactions and small mass scales to be understood in terms of the structure of a theory. A natural application of the clockwork mechanism is to the freeze-in mechanism for dark matter production. Here we consider a Higgs portal freeze-in dark matter model based on a scalar clockwork sector with a mass scale which is less than the Higgs boson mass. The dark matter scalar is the lightest scalar of the clockwork sector. Freeze-in dark matter is produced by the decay of thermal Higgs bosons to the clockwork dark matter scalars. We show that the mass …
Semi-visible jets arise in strongly interacting dark sectors, where parton evolution includes dark sector emissions, resulting in jets overlapping with missing transverse momentum. The implementation of semi-visible jets is done using the Pythia Hidden valley module to duplicate the QCD sector showering. In this work, several jet substructure observables have been examined to compare semi-visible jets and light quark/gluon jets. These comparisons were performed using different dark hadron fraction in the semi-visible jets (signal). The extreme scenarios where signal consists either of entirely…
Vector boson fusion (VBF) processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) provide a unique opportunity to search for new physics with electroweak couplings. Two studies are presented: (i) A search of supersymmetric dark matter in the final state of two VBF jets and large missing transverse energy is presented at 14 TeV. Prospects for determining the dark matter relic density are studied for the cases of Wino and Bino-Higgsino dark matter. The LHC could probe Wino dark matter with mass up to approximately 600 GeV with a luminosity of 1000 fb$^{-1}$. (ii) A search for the chargino/neutralino system…
We study multidimensional gravitational models with scalar curvature nonlinearities of the type 1/R and R^4. It is assumed that the corresponding higher dimensional spacetime manifolds undergo a spontaneous compactification to manifolds with warped product structure. Special attention is paid to the stability of the extra-dimensional factor spaces. It is shown that for certain parameter regions the systems allow for a freezing stabilization of these spaces. In particular, we find for the 1/R model that configurations with stabilized extra dimensions do not provide a late-time acceleration (the…
