We consider the Hawking radiation emitted by an evaporating black hole in JT gravity and compute the entropy of arbitrary subsets of the radiation in the slow evaporation limit, and find a zoo of possible island saddles. The Hawking radiation is shown to have long range correlations. We compute the mutual information between early and late modes and bound from below their squashed entanglement. A small subset of late modes are shown to be correlated with modes in a suitably large subset of the radiation previously emitted as well as later modes. We show how there is a breakdown of the semi-classical approximation in the form of a violation of the Araki-Lieb triangle entropy inequality, if the interior of the black hole and the radiation are considered to be separate systems. Finally, we consider how much of the radiation must be collected, and how early, to recover information thrown into the black hole as it evaporates.
We define the Bondi energy for two-dimensional dilatonic gravity theories by generalizing the known expression of the ADM energy. We show that our definition of the Bondi energy is exactly the ADM energy minus the radiation energy at null infinity. An explicit calculation is done for the evaporating black hole in the RST model with the Strominger's ghost decoupling term. It is shown that the infalling matter energy is completely recovered through the Hawking radiation and the thunderpop.
In this paper we investigate the effects of gravitational backreaction for the late time Hawking radiation of evaporating near-extremal black holes. This problem can be studied within the framework of an effective one-loop solvable model on AdS_2. We find that the Hawking flux goes down exponentially and it is proportional to a parameter which depends on details of the collapsing matter. This result seems to suggest that the information of the initial state is not lost and that the boundary of AdS_2 acts, at least at late times, as a sort of stretched horizon in the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetim…
In this paper, with the Parikh-Wilczek tunnelling framework the positions of the event horizon of the Vaidya black hole and the Vaidya-Bonner black hole are calculated respectively. We find that the event horizon and the apparent horizon of these two black holes correspond respectively to the two turning points of the Hawking radiation tunnelling barrier. That is, the quantum ergosphere coincides with the tunnelling barrier. Our calculation also implies that the Hawking radiation comes from the apparent horizon.
The picture of S-wave scatering from a 4D extremal dilatonic black hole is examined. Classically, a small matter shock wave will form a non-extremal black hole. In the "throat region" the r-t geometry is exactly that of a collapsing 2D black hole. The 4D Hawking radiation (in this classical background) gives the 2D Hawking radiation exactly in the throat region. Inclusion of the back-reaction changes this picture: the 4D solution can then be matched to the 2D one only if the Hawking radiation is very small and only at the beginning of the radiation. We give that 4D solution. When the total rad…
We study the Hawking radiation for the geometry of an evaporating 1+1 dimensional black hole. We compute Bogoliubov coefficients and the stress tensor. We use a recent result of Srednicki to estimate the entropy of entanglement produced in the evaporation process, for the 1+1 dimensional hole and for the 3+1 dimensional hole. It is found that the one space dimensional result of Srednicki is the pertinent one to use, in both cases.
A Page curve for an evaporating black hole in asymptotically flat spacetime is computed by adapting the Quantum Ryu-Takayanagi (QRT) proposal to an analytically solvable semi-classical two-dimensional dilaton gravity theory. The Page time is found to be one third of the black hole lifetime, at leading order in semi-classical corrections. A Page curve is also obtained for a semi-classical eternal black hole, where energy loss due to Hawking evaporation is balanced by an incoming energy flux.
Quantum extremal islands reproduce the unitary Page curve of an evaporating black hole. This has been derived by including replica wormholes in the gravitational path integral, but for the transient, evaporating black holes most relevant to Hawking's paradox, these wormholes have not been analyzed in any detail. In this paper we study replica wormholes for black holes formed by gravitational collapse in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, and confirm that they lead to the island rule for the entropy. The main technical challenge is that replica wormholes rely on a Euclidean path integral, while the qua…
We consider the BTZ black hole surrounded by the conformal scalar field. Within general relativity, the resonant \emph{quasinormal} (QN) modes dominate in the response of a black hole to external perturbations. At the same time, the metric of an evaporating black hole is affected by the Hawking radiation. We estimate the shift in the quasinormal spectrum of the BTZ black hole stipulated by the back reaction of the Hawking radiation. For the case of the 2+1 dimensional black hole the corrected (by $\sim \hbar$) metric is an \emph{exact} solution [C.Martines, J.Zanelli (1997)]. In addition, in t…
The cosmic censorship conjecture essentially states that naked singularities should not form from generic initial conditions. Since black hole parameters can change their values under Hawking evaporation, one has to ask whether it is possible to reach extremality by simply waiting for the black hole to evaporate. If so a slight perturbation would likely render the singularity naked. Fortunately, at least for the case of asymptotically flat 4-dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole, Hiscock and Weems showed that it can never reach extremality despite the fact that for a sufficiently massive b…
We study the doubly holographic model of [arXiv:1908.10996] in the situation where a black hole in two-dimensional JT gravity theory is coupled to an auxiliary bath system at arbitrary finite temperature. Depending on the initial temperature of the black hole relative to the bath temperature, the black hole can lose mass by emitting Hawking radiation, stay in equilibrium with the bath or gain mass by absorbing thermal radiation from the bath. In all of these scenarios, a unitary Page curve is obtained by applying the usual prescription for holographic entanglement entropy and identifying the q…
Several authors have claimed that the observable Hawking emission from a microscopic black hole is significantly modified by the formation of a photosphere or chromosphere around the black hole due to QED or QCD interactions between the emitted particles. Analyzing these models we identify a number of physical and geometrical effects which invalidate them. In all cases, we find that the observational signatures of a cosmic or Galactic background of black holes or an individual black hole remain essentially those of the standard Hawking model, with little change to the detection probability.
Analytic approximations to and numerical results for the semi-classical stress-energy tensor outside the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole obtained in the 1980's and 1990's are re-examined in order to better understand the origin of Hawking radiation and the implications for the black hole information paradox. Polynomial fits to the numerical results for the tangential stress in 4D are obtained for conformally coupled spin 0 and spin 1 fields in the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh quantum states. What these results show is that the origin of the Hawking radiation is not pair creation or tunneling…
A feature shared by many regular black hole spacetimes is the occurrence of a Cauchy horizon. It is then commonly believed that this renders the geometry unstable against perturbations through the mass-inflation effect. In this work, we perform the first dynamical study of this effect taking into account the mass-loss of the black hole due to Hawking radiation. It is shown that the time-dependence of the background leads to two novel types of late-time behavior whose properties are entirely determined by the Hawking flux. The first class of attractor-behavior is operative for regular black hol…
A Kaluza-Klein model, with a matter source associated with Hawking radiation from an evaporating black hole, is used to obtain a simple form for the radion effective potential. The environmental effect generally causes a matter-induced shift of the radion vacuum, resulting in the formation of a radion cloud around the hole. There is an albedo due to the radion cloud, with an energy dependent reflection coefficient that depends upon the size of the extra dimensions and the temperature of the hole.
We investigate (2+1)-dimensional black strings in the Kaluza-Klein spacetime. The system is classically stable as long as the horizon size is much larger than the size of the compact space. Semiclassically, however, the horizon size shrinks gradually due to the energy loss through the Hawking radiation. Eventually, the system will enter into the regime of the Gregory-Laflamme instability and get destabilized. Subsequently, the spherically symmetric black hole is formed and evaporated in the usual manner. This standard picture may be altered by the dynamics of the internal space which induced b…
The method of Hawking to obtain black hole evaporation through Bogoljubov transformation between asymptotic modes (in and out) is generalized. The construction is local in that the in modes (of say positive frequency) are decomposed by Bogoljubov transformation into positive and negative frequency local inertial modes (i.e. those which are solutions of the d'Alembertian in terms of the local normal coordinates). From this follows an interesting reexpression of the local energy momentum tensor, more particularly of the outgoing energy flux. One finds that even in the local description there exi…
We discuss a variety of bremsstrahlung processes associated with charged particles emitted by evaporating black holes. We show that such particles produce a negligible number of bremsstrahlung photons from their scattering off each other, though at low frequencies inner bremsstrahlung photons dominate over the direct Hawking emission of photons. This analysis and the further analysis of the accompanying paper invalidate Heckler's claim that sufficiently hot evaporating black holes form QED photospheres.
In this paper we study quantum radiation from an evaporating spherically symmetric non-singular black hole. We used a modified Hayward metric for a description of a non-singular black hole. We assume that the mass parameter of this metric depends on the advanced time, and choose this dependence so that it properly reproduces both black hole formation and its subsequent evaporation. We consider a quantum massless scalar field propagating in this geometry and use 2D approximation for the calculation of the quantum average of the stress-energy tensor. For the calculation of this quantity it is su…
We compute the mutual information of two Hawking particles emitted consecutively by an evaporating black hole. Following Page, we find that the mutual information is of order exp(-S) where S is the entropy of the black hole. We speculate on implications for black hole unitarity, in particular on a possible failure of locality at large distances.
The impact of the leading quantum gravity effects on the dynamics of the Hawking evaporation process of a black hole is investigated. Its spacetime structure is described by a renormalization group improved Vaidya metric. Its event horizon, apparent horizon, and timelike limit surface are obtained taking the scale dependence of Newton's constant into account. The emergence of a quantum ergosphere is discussed. The final state of the evaporation process is a cold, Planck size remnant.
A coherent picture of the quantum mechanics of a collapse-formed, evaporating black hole is presented. In a distant frame, semiclassical theory in the zone describes microscopic dynamics of only the "hard modes," the modes that are hard enough to be discriminated in the timescale of Hawking emission. The thermal nature of these modes arises from microcanonical typicality of the full black hole degrees of freedom, mostly composed of the "soft modes," the modes that cannot be discriminated at the semiclassical level. The hard modes are purified by a combined system of the soft modes and early Ha…
The near-horizon geometry of evaporation black holes is determined according to the semi-classical Einstein equation. We consider spherically symmetric configurations in which the collapsing star has already collapsed below the Schwarzschild radius. The back-reaction of the vacuum energy-momentum, including Hawking radiation, is taken into account. The vacuum energy-momentum plays a crucial role in a small neighborhood of the apparent horizon, as it appears at the leading order in the semi-classical Einstein equation. Our study is focused on the time-dependent geometry in this region.
Holography gives us a tool to view the Hawking effect from a new, classical perspective. In the context of Randall-Sundrum braneworld models, we show that the basic features of four-dimensional evaporating solutions are nicely translated into classical five-dimensional language. This includes the dual bulk description of particles tunneling through the horizon.
We study black hole radiation inside black holes within the framework of quantum gravity. First, we review on our previous work of a canonical quantization for a spherically symmetric geometry where one of the spatial coordinates is treated as the time variable, since we think of the interior region of a black hole. Based on this formalism, under physically plausible assumptions, we solve the Wheeler-De Witt equation inside the black hole, and show that the mass-loss rate of an evaporating black hole due to thermal radiation is equivalent to the result obtained by Hawking in his semi-classical…
This letter aims at showing that the observation of evaporating black holes should allow distinguishing between the usual Hawking behavior and Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) expectations. We present a full Monte-Carlo simulation of the evaporation in LQG and statistical tests that discriminate between competing models. We conclude that contrarily to what was commonly thought, the discreteness of the area in LQG leads to characteristic features that qualify evaporating black holes as objects that could reveal quantum gravity footprints.
Primordial black holes (PBHs) in the mass range $10^{17} - 10^{23}~{\rm gm}$ are considered as possible dark matter candidates as they are not subject to big-bang nucleosynthesis constraints and behave like cold dark matter. If PBHs are indeed dark matter, they cannot be treated as isolated objects in asymptotic flat space-time. Furthermore, when compared to stellar-mass black holes, the rate at which the Hawking particles radiate out from PBHs is significantly faster. In this work, we obtain an exact time-dependent solution that models evaporating black holes in the cosmological background. A…
We present an approximate time-dependent metric in ingoing Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates for an evaporating nonrotating black hole as a first-order perturbation of the Schwarzschild metric, using the linearized back reaction from a realistic approximation to the stress-energy tensor for the Hawking radiation in the Unruh quantum state.
The quasi-classical method of deriving Hawking radiation under the consideration of canonical invariance is investigated. We find that the horizon should be regarded as a two-way barrier and the ingoing amplitude should be calculated according to the negative energy particles tunneling into the black hole because of the whole space-time interchange and thus the standard Hawking temperature is recovered. We also discuss the advantage of the Painlevé coordinates in Hawking radiation as tunneling.
We calculate the absorption coefficient of scalar field on the background of the two-dimensional AdS black hole, which is of relevance to Hawking radiation. For the massless scalar field, we find that there does not exist any massless radiation.
The possibility of an alternative way to formulate the Hawking radiation in a static Schwarzschild spacetime has been explored. To calculate the Hawking radiation, there can be two possible choices of the spacetime wedge pairs in the Krucal-Szekeres coordinates. One is the wedge pair consists of exterior spacetime of a black hole and the exterior spacetime of a white hole, and the other is that of exterior and interior spacetimes of one black hole. The radiation from the former is the Hawking's original one. Though the the latter has been often regarded as the same phenomena as the former, the…
Robinson and Wilczek suggested a new method of deriving Hawking radiation by the consideration of anomalies. The basic idea of their approach is that the flux of Hawking radiation is determined by anomaly cancellation conditions in the Schwarzschild black hole (BH) background. Iso et al. extended the method to a charged Reissner-Nordstroem BH and a rotating Kerr BH, and they showed that the flux of Hawking radiation can also be determined by anomaly cancellation conditions and regularity conditions of currents at the horizon. Their formulation gives the correct Hawking flux for all the cases a…
We take the method of anomaly cancellation for the derivation of Hawking radiation initiated by Robinson and Wilczek, and apply it to the non-extremal five-dimensional D1-D5 black hole in string theory. The fluxes of the electric charge flow and the energy-momentum tensor from the black hole are obtained. They are shown to match exactly with those of the two-dimensional black body radiation at the Hawking temperature.
We revisit the tunneling process from a Schwarzschild black hole in the noncommutative spacetime and obtain the non-thermal tunneling probability. In such non-thermal spectrum, the correlations are discovered, which can carry the information about the noncommutativity. Thus this enlightens a way to find the noncommutative information in the Hawking radiation. The entropy is also shown to be conserved in the whole radiation process, which implies that the unitarity is held even for the Hawking radiation from noncommutative black holes.
We explore the signature of the extra dimension in the Hawking radiation in a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole with squashed horizons. Comparing with the spherical case, we find that the rotating parameter brings richer physics. We obtain the appropriate size of the extra dimension which can enhance the Hawking radiation and may open a window to detect the extra dimensions.
In this paper we obtain the flux of Hawking radiation from Rotating BTZ black holes from gauge and gravitational anomalies point of view. Then we show that the gauge and gravitational anomaly in the BTZ spacetime is cancelled by the total flux of a 2-dimensional blackbody at the Hawking temperature of the spacetime.
Hawking radiation from black hole horizon can be viewed as a quantum tunnelling process, and fermions via tunnelling can successfully recover Hawking temperature. In this paper, considering the tunnelling particles with spin 1/2 (namely, Dirac particles), we further improve Kerner and Man's fermion tunnelling method to study Hawking radiation via tunnelling from rotating black holes in de Sitter spaces, specifically including that from Kerr de Sitter black hole and Kerr-Newman de Sitter black hole. As a result, Hawking temperatures at the event horizon (EH) and the cosmological horizon (CH) ar…
We study black hole radiation of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole with an electric charge in the framework of quantum gravity. Based on a canonical quantization for a spherically symmetric geometry, under physically plausible assumptions, we solve the Wheeler-De Witt equation in the regions not only between the outer apparent horizon and the spatial infinity but also between the spacetime singularity and the inner apparent horizon, and then show that the mass loss rate of an evaporating black hole due to thermal radiation agrees with the semiclassical result when we choose an integration consta…
In this paper we obtain the black hole metric from a semiclassical analysis of loop quantum black hole. Our solution and the Schwarzschild one tend to match well at large distances from Planck region. In r=0 the semiclassical metric is regular and singularity free in contrast to the classical one. By using the new metric we calculate the Hawking temperature and the entropy. For the entropy we obtain the logarithmic correction to the classical area law. Finally we study the mass evaporation process and we show the mass and temperature tend to zero at infinitive time.
We study a partially fine-grained description of an evaporating black hole by introducing an open baby universe with a boundary. Since the Page's calculation of the entropy of Hawking radiation involves an ensemble average over a class of states, one can formally obtain a fine-grained state by purifying this setup. For AdS black holes with a holographic dual, this purification amounts to introducing an additional boundary (i.e., baby universe) and then connecting it to the original black hole through an Einstein-Rosen bridge. We uncover several details of this setup. As applications, we briefl…
Black hole space times evaporate in discrete steps due to remarkably slow Hawking radiation. We here identify evaporation with essentially extremal states at the limit of quantum computation, performing $2.7\times 10^{79}$ bit calculations per photon emission in a one solar mass black hole. During evaporation, particles in free fall co-evolve satisfying $EM=$constant, where $E$ and $M$ denote the total mass energy-at-infinity of the particle and, respectively, black hole. Particles are hereby increasingly entangled with the black hole space-time over the course of its evaporation.
The radiation rate of an evaporating black hole is calculated in a toy model in which the geometry outside the collapsing matter is described by a Vaidya metric. When back reaction consistency is imposed, the singularity in the blueshift factor near the horizon is softened, suppressing the evaporation rate in the Schwarzschild case by the fourth power of the external time, thus rendering the hole eternal.
We provide a simple way for calculating the entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole from the entropy of its Hawking radiation. To this end, we show that if a thermodynamic system loses its energy only through the black body radiation, its loss of entropy is always 3/4 of the entropy of the emitted radiation. This proposition enables us to relate the entropy of an evaporating black hole to the entropy of its Hawking radiation. Explicitly, by calculating the entropy of the Hawking radiation emitted in the full period of evaporation of the black hole, we find the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the i…
Recent work has established a route towards the semiclassical validity of the Page curve, and so provided evidence that information escapes an evaporating black hole. However, a protocol to explicitly recover and make practical use of that information in the classical limit has not yet been given. In this paper, we describe such a protocol, showing that an observer may reconstruct the phase space of the black hole interior by measuring the Uhlmann phase of the Hawking radiation. The process of black hole formation and evaporation provides an invertible map between this phase space and the spac…
Hawking radiation of astrophysical black holes is minute and thought to be unobservable. However, different mechanisms could contribute to an anomalously high emission rate: extra dimensions, new "dark" families of bosons or fermions, or a lower fundamental Planck scale. Do black holes flood the Universe with gravitational waves via mass loss? Here, we show that the formation of black hole binaries and the absence of a stochastic background of gravitational waves can limit the emission rate to $|\dot{M}|\lesssim 10^{-15}M_{\odot}/{\rm yr}$, seven orders of magnitude more stringent than bounds …
Primordial black holes (PBHs) from the early Universe constitute a viable dark matter (DM) candidate and can span many orders of magnitude in mass. Light PBHs with masses around $10^{15}$ g contribute to DM and will efficiently evaporate through Hawking radiation at present time, leading to a slew of observable signatures. The emission will deposit energy and heat in the surrounding interstellar medium. We revisit the constraints from dwarf galaxy heating by evaporating non-spinning PBHs and find that conservative constraints from Leo T dwarf galaxy are significantly weaker than previously sug…
Black hole (BH) evaporation is caused by creation of entangled particle-antiparticle pairs near the event horizon, with one carrying positive energy to infinity and the other carrying negative energy into the BH. Since under the event horizon, particles always move toward the BH center, they can only be absorbed but not emitted at the center. This breaks absorption-emission symmetry and, as a result, annihilation of the particle at the BH center is described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We show that due to entanglement between photons moving inside and outside the event horizon, nonunitary …
In this paper, we discuss the Higgs vacuum stability around evaporating black holes. We provide a new approach to investigate the false vacuum decay around the black hole and clearly show how vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs induce a gravitational collapse of the vacuum. Furthermore, we point out that the backreaction of the Hawking radiation can not be ignored and the gravitational vacuum decay is exponentially suppressed. However, a large number of the evaporating (or evaporated) primordial black holes threaten the existence of the Universe and we obtain a new upper bound on the evaporating …
Hiscock and Weems showed that there is an attractor behavior in the evolution of asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordström black hole under Hawking evaporation. If the initial charge-to-mass ratio $Q/M$ of the black hole is relatively small, then the ratio first increases until the black hole hits the attractor, and then starts to discharge towards the Schwarzschild limit. Sufficiently charged black holes, on the other hand, simply discharge steadily towards the Schwarzschild limit. In this work we further investigate the nature of the attractor, and found that it is characterized by the mass los…
We show that the canonical purification of an evaporating black hole after the Page time consists of a short, connected, Lorentzian wormhole between two asymptotic boundaries, one of which is unitarily related to the radiation. This provides a quantitative and general realization of the predictions of ER=EPR in an evaporating black hole after the Page time; this further gives a standard AdS/CFT calculation of the entropy of the radiation (without modifications of the homology constraint). Before the Page time, the canonical purification consists of two disconnected, semiclassical black holes. …
Locality plays a key role in the derivation of Hawking radiation. Could relaxing the locality criterion modify Hawking radiation? We consider Hawking radiation in a general class of non local quantum field theories. We prove that Hawking radiation is unmodified for these theories. Our result establishes the universality of Hawking radiation in a larger class of theories.
