Semiconductor quantum dots in cavities are promising single-photon sources. Here, we present a path to deterministic operation, by harnessing the intrinsic linear dipole in a neutral quantum dot via phonon-assisted excitation. This enables emission of fully polarized single photons, with a measured degree of linear polarization up to 0.994 $\pm$ 0.007, and high population inversion -- 85\% as high as resonant excitation. We demonstrate a single-photon source with a polarized first lens brightness of 0.50 $\pm $ 0.01, a single-photon purity of 0.954 $\pm$ 0.001 and single-photon indistinguishability of 0.909 $\pm$ 0.004.
The effect of the dipole polarization on the quantum dipole dipole interaction near an Ag nanosphere (ANS) is investigated. A theoretical formalism in terms of classical Green function is developed for the transfer rate and the potential energy of the dipole dipole interaction (DDI) between two polarized dipoles. It is found that a linear transition dipole can couple to a left circularly polarized transition dipole much stronger than to a right circularly polarized transition dipole. This polarization selectivity exists over a wide frequency range and is robust against the variation of the dip…
We investigate spontaneous emission of a two-level atom with an arbitrarily polarized electric dipole in front of a flat dielectric surface. We treat the general case where the atomic dipole matrix element is a complex vector, that is, the atomic dipole can rotate with time in space. We calculate the rates of spontaneous emission into evanescent and radiation modes and study the angular densities of the rates in the space of wave vectors for the field modes. We show that, when the ellipticity of the atomic dipole is not zero, the angular density of the spontaneous emission rate of the atom may…
We consider an ultra-small system of polarized bosons on an optical lattice with a ring topology interacting via long range dipole-dipole interactions. Dipoles polarized perpendicular to the plane of the ring reveal sharp transitions between different density wave phases. As the strength of the dipolar interactions is varied the behavior of the transitions is first-order like. For dipoles polarized in the plane of the ring the transitions between possible phases show pronounced sensitivity to the lattice depth. The abundance of possible configurations may be useful for quantum information appl…
We demonstrate a bright and polarized fiber in-line single photon source based on plasmon-enhanced emission of colloidal single quantum dots into an optical nanofiber. We show that emission properties of single quantum dots can be strongly enhanced in the presence of single gold nanorods leading to a bright and strongly polarized single photon emission. The single photons are efficiently coupled to guided modes of the nanofiber and eventually to a single mode optical fiber. The brightness (fiber-coupled photon count rate) of the single photon source is estimated to be 12.2(0.6) MHz, with high …
Tightly focused optical dipole traps induce vector light shifts ("fictitious magnetic fields") which complicate their use for single-atom trapping and manipulation. The problem can be mitigated by adding a larger, real magnetic field, but this solution is not always applicable; in particular, it precludes fast switching to a field-free configuration. Here we show that this issue can be addressed elegantly by deliberately adding a small elliptical polarization component to the dipole beam. In our experiments with single $^{87}$Rb atoms in a chopped trap, we observe improvements up to a factor 1…
We study electronic excitations of a degenerate gas of atoms trapped in pairs in an optical lattice. Local dipole-dipole interactions produce a long lived antisymmetric and a short lived symmetric superposition of individual atomic excitations as the lowest internal on-site excitations. Due to the much larger dipole moment the symmetric states couple efficiently to neighbouring lattice sites and can be well represented by Frenkel excitons, while the antisymmetric dark states stay localized. Within a cavity only symmetric states couple to cavity photons inducing long range interactions to form …
We suggest the construction of a set of the quantum hydrodynamics equations for the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), where atoms have the electric dipole moment. The contribution of the dipole-dipole interactions (DDI) to the Euler equation is obtained. Quantum equations for the evolution of medium polarization are derived. Developing mathematical method allows to study effect of interactions on the evolution of polarization. The developing method can be applied to various physical systems in which dynamics is affected by the DDI. Derivation of Gross-Pitaevskii equation for polarized particles …
We calculate pair potential curves for interacting Rydberg atoms in a constant electric field and use them to determine the effective $C_3$ dipole-dipole and $C_6$ van der Waals coefficients. We compare the $C_3$ and $C_6$ with experiments where the angle of a polarizing electric field is varied with respect to the axis of a quasi-1-dimensional trap at ultracold temperatures. The dipoles produced via polarization of the atoms have an angular dependent dipole-dipole interaction. We focus on the interaction potential of two rubidium Rydberg atoms in $50S_{1/2}$ states in the blockade regime. For…
We propose the construction of a set of quantum hydrodynamics equations for the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) where atoms have electric dipole moment (EDM). The contribution of the dipole-dipole interactions (DDI) to the Euler equation is estimated. Quantum equations for the evolution of medium polarization are constructed for the first time. The mathematical method we developed allows studying the effects of interactions on the evolution of polarization. The developed method may be applied to various physical systems in which dynamics is affected by DDI. A problem of elementary excitations i…
We experimentally investigate $σ^+$-$σ^-$ polarization gradient cooling~(PGC) of a single $^{87}$Rb atom in a tightly focused dipole trap and show that the cooling limit strongly depends on the polarization of the trapping field. For optimized cooling light power, the temperature of the atom reaches~$10.4(6)\,μ$K in a linearly polarized trap, approximately five times lower than in a circularly polarized trap. The inhibition of PGC is qualitatively explained by the fictitious magnetic fields induced by the trapping field. We further demonstrate that switching the trap polarization from linear t…
An analytical approach to quantum mechanical wave packet dynamics of laser-driven particles is presented. The time-dependent Schroedinger equation is solved for an electron exposed to a linearly polarized plane wave of arbitrary shape. The calculation goes beyond the dipole approximation, such that magnetic field effects like wave packet shearing are included. Analytical expressions for the time-dependent widths of the wave packet and its orientation are established. These allow for a simple understanding of the wave packet dynamics.
A new ultra bright pulsed source of polarization entangled photons has been realized using type-II phase matching in spontaneous parametric down conversion process in two cascaded crystals. The optical axes of the crystals are aligned in such a way that the extraordinarily (ordinarily) polarized cone from one crystal overlaps with the ordinarily (extraordinarily) polarized cone from the second crystal. This spatial overlapping removes the association between the polarization and the output angle of the photons that exist in a single type-II down conversion process. Hence, entanglement of photo…
A bright source of fiber-coupled, polarized single photons is an essential component of any realistic quantum network based on today's existing fiber infrastructure. Here, we develop a Purcell enhanced, polarized source of single photons at room temperature by coupling single colloidal quantum dots to the localized surface plasmon-polariton modes of single gold nanorods, combined on the surface of an optical nanofiber. A maximum enhancement of photon emission of 62 times was measured corresponding to a degree of polarization of 86 $\%$, and a brightness enhancement of four times in the fiber m…
Based on the multi-level model, we have calculated light shifts for Zeeman states of hyperfine levels of cesium (Cs) 6S1/2 ground state and 6P3/2 excited state. The magic-wavelength linearly-polarized optical dipole trap (ODT) for Cs 6S1/2 F=4, mF=+4 - 6P3/2 F'=5, mF=+5 transition is experimentally constructed and characterized by using the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of trapped single Cs atoms. The magic wavelength is 937.7 nm which produces almost the same light shift for 6S1/2 F=4, mF=+4 ground state and 6P3/2 F'=5, mF=+5 excited state with linearly-polarized ODT laser beam. Compared …
The time dependent Schrodinger equation inclusive of curvature effects is developed for a spinless electron constrained to motion on a toroidal surface and subjected to circularly polarized and linearly polarized waves in the microwave regime. A basis set expansion is used to determine the character of the surface currents as the system is driven at a particular resonance frequency. Surface current densities and magnetic moments corresponding to those currents are calculated. It is shown that the currents can yield magnetic moments large not only along the toroidal symmetry axis, but along dir…
We use the polarized Fock states to describe the coupled molecule-cavity hybrid system in quantum electrodynamics. The molecular permanent dipoles polarize the photon field by displacing its vector potential, leading to non-orthogonality between the Fock states of two different polarized photon fields. These polarized Fock states allow an intuitive understanding of several new phenomena that go beyond the prediction of the quantum Rabi model, and at the same time, offer numerical convenience to converge the results. We further exploit this non-orthogonality to generate multiple photons from a …
We report on the local control of the transition frequency of a spin-$1/2$ encoded in two Rydberg levels of an individual atom by applying a state-selective light shift using an addressing beam. With this tool, we first study the spectrum of an elementary system of two spins, tuning it from a non-resonant to a resonant regime, where "bright" (superradiant) and "dark" (subradiant) states emerge. We observe the collective enhancement of the microwave coupling to the bright state. We then show that after preparing an initial single spin excitation and letting it hop due to the spin-exchange inter…
We determine exactly the non-retarded Casimir-Polder interaction between a neutral but polarizable particle and a perfectly reflecting sheet containing a circular hole. The calculation reveals a strong dependence of the interaction on the orientation of the particle's electric dipole moment with respect to the surface. For a dipole moment that is polarized perpendicularly to the surface the interaction potential has two saddle points lying above and below the plane of the surface, on a line through the centre of the aperture. For a dipole moment that is polarized parallel to the surface there …
We study the quantum scattering in two spatial dimensions (2D). Our computational scheme allows to quantitatively analyze the scattering parameters for the strong anisotropy of the interaction potential. High efficiency of the method is demonstrated for the 2D scattering on the cylindrical potential with the elliptical base and dipole-dipole collisions in the plane. We reproduce the result for the 2D scattering of polarized dipoles in binary collisions obtained recently by Ticknor [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 84}, 032702 (2011)] and the 2D collisions of unpolarized dipoles.
We investigate the radiative coupling between two two-level atoms with arbitrarily polarized dipoles in the vicinity of a nanofiber. We present a systematic derivation for the master equation, the single- and cross-atom decay coefficients, and the dipole-dipole interaction coefficients for the atoms interacting with the vacuum of the field in the guided and radiation modes of the nanofiber. We study numerically the case where the atomic dipoles are circularly polarized. In this case, the rate of emission depends on the propagation direction, that is, the radiative interaction between the atoms…
