The celebrated exchange fluctuation theorem -- proposed by Jarzynski and Wózcik, (Phys Rev. Lett. 92, 230602 (2004)) for heat exchange between two systems in thermal equilibrium at different temperatures -- is explored here for quantum Gaussian states in thermal equilibrium. We employ Wigner distribution function formalism for quantum states, which exhibits close resemblance with the classcial phase-space trajectory description, to arrive at this theorem. For two Gaussian states in thermal equilibrium at two different temperatures kept in contact with each other for a fixed duration of time we show that the quantum Jarzyinski-Wózcik theorem agrees with the corresponding classical result in the limit \hbar->0.
We study the statistics of heat exchange of a quantum system that collides sequentially with an arbitrary number of ancillas. This can describe, for instance, an accelerated particle going through a bubble chamber. Unlike other approaches in the literature, our focus is on the \emph{joint} probability distribution that heat $Q_1$ is exchanged with ancilla 1, heat $Q_2$ is exchanged with ancilla 2, and so on. This allows one to address questions concerning the correlations between the collisional events. The joint distribution is found to satisfy a Fluctuation theorem of the Jarzynski-Wójcik ty…
In this work, we investigate the heat exchange between two quantum systems whose initial equilibrium states are described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble. First, we generalize the fluctuation relations for heat exchange discovered by Jarzynski and Wójcik to quantum systems prepared in the equilibrium states described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble at different generalized temperatures. Second, we extend the connections between heat exchange and Rényi divergences to quantum systems with very general initial conditions. These relations are applicable for quantum systems with conserved quanti…
In this work, we establish an exact relation which connects the heat exchange between two systems initialized in their thermodynamic equilibrium states at different temperatures and the Rényi divergences between the initial thermodynamic equilibrium state and the final non-equilibrium state of the total system. The relation tells us that the various moments of the heat statistics are determined by the Renyi divergences between the initial equilibrium state and the final non-equilibrium state of the global system. In particular the average heat exchange is quantified by the relative entropy bet…
In this paper, we design a quantum heat exchanger which converts heat into light on relatively short quantum optical time scales. Our scheme takes advantage of heat transfer as well as collective cavity-mediated laser cooling of an atomic gas inside a cavitating bubble. Laser cooling routinely transfers individually trapped ions to nano-Kelvin temperatures for applications in quantum technology. The quantum heat exchanger which we propose here might be able to provide cooling rates of the order of Kelvin temperatures per millisecond and is expected to find applications in micro and nanotechnol…
A fluctuation relation for the heat exchange of an open quantum system under a thermalizing Markovian dynamics is derived. We show that the probability of that the system absorbs an amount of heat from its bath, at a given time interval, divided by the probability of the reverse process (releasing the same amount of heat to the bath) is given by an exponential factor which depends on the amount of heat and the difference between the temperatures of the system and the bath. We also argue that the probability of the violation of the second law of thermodynamics (here in the form of net heat tran…
Various engine types are thermodynamically equivalent in the quantum limit of small 'engine action'. Our previous derivation of the equivalence is restricted to Markovian heat baths and to implicit classical work repository (e.g., laser light in the semi-classical approximation). In this paper all the components, baths, batteries, and engine, are explicitly taken into account. To neatly treat non-Markovian dynamics we use mediating particles that function as a heat exchanger. We find that on top of the previously observed equivalence there is a higher degree of equivalence that cannot be achie…
Thermodynamics has recently been extended to small scales with resource theories that model heat exchanges. Real physical systems exchange diverse quantities: heat, particles, angular momentum, etc. We generalize thermodynamic resource theories to exchanges of observables other than heat, to baths other than heat baths, and to free energies other than the Helmholtz free energy. These generalizations are illustrated with "grand-potential" theories that model movements of heat and particles. Free operations include unitaries that conserve energy and particle number. From this conservation law an…
Very recently, interferometric methods have been proposed to measure the full statistics of work performed on a driven quantum system [Dorner et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 230601 (2013)] and [Mazzola et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 230602 (2013)]. The advantage of such schemes is that they replace the necessity to make projective measurements by performing phase estimation on an appropriately coupled ancilla qubit. These proposals are one possible route to the tangible experimental exploration of quantum thermodynamics, a subject which is the centre of much current attention due to the current contr…
In this paper, unambiguous redefinitions of heat and work are presented for quantum thermodynamic systems. We will use genuine reasoning based on which Clausius originally defined work and heat in establishing thermodynamics. The change in the energy which is accompanied by a change in the entropy is identified as heat, while any change in the energy which does not lead to a change in the entropy is known as work. It will be seen that quantum coherence does not allow all the energy exchanged between two quantum systems to be only of the heat form. Several examples will also be discussed. Final…
As the dimensions of physical systems approach the nanoscale, the laws of thermodynamics must be reconsidered due to the increased importance of fluctuations and quantum effects. While the statistical mechanics of small classical systems is relatively well understood, the quantum case still poses challenges. Here we set up a formalism that allows to calculate the full probability distribution of energy exchanges between a periodically driven quantum system and a thermalized heat reservoir. The formalism combines Floquet theory with a generalized master equation approach. For a driven two-level…
We establish the path integral approach for the time-dependent heat exchange of an externally driven quantum system coupled to a thermal reservoir. We derive the relevant influence functional and present an exact formal expression for the moment generating functional which carries all statistical properties of the heat exchange process for general linear dissipation. The general method is applied to the time-dependent average heat transfer in the dissipative two-state system. We show that the heat can be written as a convolution integral which involves the population and coherence correlation …
Quantum heat engines are subjected to quantum fluctuations related to their discrete energy spectra. Such fluctuations question the reliable operation of quantum engines in the microscopic realm. We here realize an endoreversible quantum Otto cycle in the large quasi-spin states of Cesium impurities immersed in an ultracold Rubidium bath. Endoreversible machines are internally reversible and irreversible losses only occur via thermal contact. We employ quantum control over both machine and bath to suppress internal dissipation and regulate the direction of heat transfer that occurs via inelast…

We study the stochastic energetic exchanges in quantum heat engines. Due to microreversibility, these obey a fluctuation relation, called the heat engine fluctuation relation, which implies the Carnot bound: no machine can have an efficiency larger than Carnot's efficiency. The stochastic thermodynamics of a quantum heat engine (including the joint statistics of heat and work and the statistics of efficiency) is illustrated by means of an optimal two-qubit heat engine, where each qubit is coupled to a thermal bath and a two-qubit gate determines energy exchanges between the two qubits. We disc…
Energy exchanges under form of heat is neither the most natural or efficient way to operate an engine in the quantum realm. Recently there have been in the literature several proposals for "quantum measurement engines" where energy is fed into the machine by operations which otherwise would be conducive to quantum measurements on the working substance (henceforth "the system"). In the analysis of the working of these devices, oftentimes it is assumed that the only effect of measurement is to turn the state of the system from whatever prior state to an eigenstate of the measured property, and e…
We consider finite sized atomic systems with varying number of particles which have dipolar interactions among them and also under the collective driving and dissipative effect of thermal photon environment. Focusing on the simple case of two atoms, we investigate the impact of different parameters of the model on the coherence contained in the system. We observe that even though the system is initialized in a completely incoherent state, it evolves to a state with a finite amount of coherence and preserve that coherence in the long-time limit in the presence of thermal photons. We propose a n…
An oscillatory term is found in both the energy expectation and dynamics of a wave-packet in a time-varying harmonic trap and infinite potential well. They are proved to oscillate in coherence with the time lapse within each period depending on both the cutoff in transition energies and the specific route via which the potential is being varied. This oscillatory term is general to arbitrary potential forms since it derives from the interference between crossed transition trajectories. Close analogy is made to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction for giant-magnetoresistance trilayers, …
The theory of quantum thermodynamics investigates how the concepts of heat, work, and temperature can be carried over to the quantum realm, where fluctuations and randomness are fundamentally unavoidable. Of particular practical relevance is the investigation of quantum thermal machines: Machines that use the flow of heat in order to perform some useful task. In this lectures series, we give a brief introduction into how the laws of thermodynamics arise from quantum theory and how thermal machines can be described with Markovian quantum master equations. Recent results are illustrated with exa…
