On an example of solution of the face recognition problem the approach for estimation of the most representative descriptor among a set of feature vectors for the same face is considered in present study. The estimation is based on robust calculation of the mode-median mixture vector for the set as the descriptor by means of Welsch/Leclerc loss function application in case of very sparse filling of the feature space with feature vectors
The recent advances brought by deep learning allowed to improve the performance in image retrieval tasks. Through the many convolutional layers, available in a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), it is possible to obtain a hierarchy of features from the evaluated image. At every step, the patches extracted are smaller than the previous levels and more representative. Following this idea, this paper introduces a new detector applied on the feature maps extracted from pre-trained CNN. Specifically, this approach lets to increase the number of features in order to increase the performance of the …

A distinctive representation of image patches in form of features is a key component of many computer vision and robotics tasks, such as image matching, image retrieval, and visual localization. State-of-the-art descriptors, from hand-crafted descriptors such as SIFT to learned ones such as HardNet, are usually high dimensional; 128 dimensions or even more. The higher the dimensionality, the larger the memory consumption and computational time for approaches using such descriptors. In this paper, we investigate multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) to extract low-dimensional but high-quality descript…
The detection of objects that are multi-oriented is a difficult pattern recognition problem. In this paper, we propose to evaluate the performance of different families of descriptors for the classification of galaxy morphologies. We investigate the performance of the Hu moments, Flusser moments, Zernike moments, Fourier-Mellin moments, and ring projection techniques based on 1D moment and the Fourier transform. We consider two main datasets for the performance evaluation. The first dataset is an artificial dataset based on representative templates from 11 types of galaxies, which are evaluate…

Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a very powerful approach to extract discriminative local descriptors for effective image search. Recent work adopts fine-tuned strategies to further improve the discriminative power of the descriptors. Taking a different approach, in this paper, we propose a novel framework to achieve competitive retrieval performance. Firstly, we propose various masking schemes, namely SIFT-mask, SUM-mask, and MAX-mask, to select a representative subset of local convolutional features and remove a large number of redundant features. We demonstrate that this can effectivel…

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is one of the most active research areas in multimedia information retrieval. Given a query image, the task is to search relevant images in a repository. Low level features like color, texture, and shape feature vectors of an image are always considered to be an important attribute in CBIR system. Thus the performance of the CBIR system can be enhanced by combining these feature vectors. In this paper, we propose a novel CBIR framework by applying to index using multiclass SVM and finding the appropriate weights of the individual features automatically usin…
Given a set of hand-crafted local features, acquiring a global representation via aggregation is a promising technique to boost computational efficiency and improve task performance. Existing feature aggregation (FA) approaches, including Bag of Words and Fisher Vectors, usually fail to capture the desired information due to their pipeline mode. In this paper, we propose a generic formulation to provide a systematical solution (named ProLFA) to aggregate local descriptors. It is capable of producing compact yet interpretable representations by selecting representative prototypes from numerous …
The landmark recognition problem is far from being solved, but with the use of features extracted from intermediate layers of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), excellent results have been obtained. In this work, we propose some improvements on the creation of R-MAC descriptors in order to make the newly-proposed R-MAC+ descriptors more representative than the previous ones. However, the main contribution of this paper is a novel retrieval technique, that exploits the fine representativeness of the MAC descriptors of the database images. Using this descriptors called "db regions" during the…
In this paper we evaluate performance of data-dependent hashing methods on binary data. The goal is to find a hashing method that can effectively produce lower dimensional binary representation of 512-bit FREAK descriptors. A representative sample of recent unsupervised, semi-supervised and supervised hashing methods was experimentally evaluated on large datasets of labelled binary FREAK feature descriptors.

In the large-scale image retrieval task, the two most important requirements are the discriminability of image representations and the efficiency in computation and storage of representations. Regarding the former requirement, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is proven to be a very powerful tool to extract highly discriminative local descriptors for effective image search. Additionally, in order to further improve the discriminative power of the descriptors, recent works adopt fine-tuned strategies. In this paper, taking a different approach, we propose a novel, computationally efficient, an…

Extracting robust and general 3D local features is key to downstream tasks such as point cloud registration and reconstruction. Existing learning-based local descriptors are either sensitive to rotation transformations, or rely on classical handcrafted features which are neither general nor representative. In this paper, we introduce a new, yet conceptually simple, neural architecture, termed SpinNet, to extract local features which are rotationally invariant whilst sufficiently informative to enable accurate registration. A Spatial Point Transformer is first introduced to map the input local …

The content based image retrieval aims to find the similar images from a large scale dataset against a query image. Generally, the similarity between the representative features of the query image and dataset images is used to rank the images for retrieval. In early days, various hand designed feature descriptors have been investigated based on the visual cues such as color, texture, shape, etc. that represent the images. However, the deep learning has emerged as a dominating alternative of hand-designed feature engineering from a decade. It learns the features automatically from the data. Thi…
This work presents an approach to category-based action recognition in video using sparse coding techniques. The proposed approach includes two main contributions: i) A new method to handle intra-class variations by decomposing each video into a reduced set of representative atomic action acts or key-sequences, and ii) A new video descriptor, ITRA: Inter-Temporal Relational Act Descriptor, that exploits the power of comparative reasoning to capture relative similarity relations among key-sequences. In terms of the method to obtain key-sequences, we introduce a loss function that, for each vide…
We propose a method for representing motion information for video classification and retrieval. We improve upon local descriptor based methods that have been among the most popular and successful models for representing videos. The desired local descriptors need to satisfy two requirements: 1) to be representative, 2) to be discriminative. Therefore, they need to occur frequently enough in the videos and to be be able to tell the difference among different types of motions. To generate such local descriptors, the video blocks they are based on must contain just the right amount of motion infor…
Global Average Pooling (GAP) is used by default on the channel-wise attention mechanism to extract channel descriptors. However, the simple global aggregation method of GAP is easy to make the channel descriptors have homogeneity, which weakens the detail distinction between feature maps, thus affecting the performance of the attention mechanism. In this work, we propose a novel method for channel-wise attention network, called Stochastic Region Pooling (SRP), which makes the channel descriptors more representative and diversity by encouraging the feature map to have more or wider important fe…

We study an indexing architecture to store and search in a database of high-dimensional vectors from the perspective of statistical signal processing and decision theory. This architecture is composed of several memory units, each of which summarizes a fraction of the database by a single representative vector. The potential similarity of the query to one of the vectors stored in the memory unit is gauged by a simple correlation with the memory unit's representative vector. This representative optimizes the test of the following hypothesis: the query is independent from any vector in the memor…
Many deep learning-based models have been introduced in finger vein recognition in recent years. These solutions, however, suffer from data dependency and are difficult to achieve model generalization. To address this problem, we are inspired by the idea of domain adaptation and propose a universal learning-based framework, which achieves generalization while training with limited data. To reduce differences between data distributions, a compressed U-Net is introduced as a domain mapper to map the raw region of interest image onto a target domain. The concentrated target domain is a unified fe…

Infrared human action recognition has many advantages, i.e., it is insensitive to illumination change, appearance variability, and shadows. Existing methods for infrared action recognition are either based on spatial or local temporal information, however, the global temporal information, which can better describe the movements of body parts across the whole video, is not considered. In this letter, we propose a novel global temporal representation named optical-flow stacked difference image (OFSDI) and extract robust and discriminative feature from the infrared action data by considering the …
Recognizing material from color images is still a challenging problem today. While deep neural networks provide very good results on object recognition and has been the topic of a huge amount of papers in the last decade, their adaptation to material images still requires some works to reach equivalent accuracies. Nevertheless, recent studies achieve very good results in material recognition with deep learning and we propose, in this paper, to review most of them by focusing on three aspects: material image datasets, influence of the context and ad hoc descriptors for material appearance. Ever…
