We describe the boundary of linear subvarieties in the moduli space of multi-scale differentials. Linear subvarieties are algebraic subvarieties of strata of (possibly) meromorphic differentials that in local period coordinates are given by linear equations. The main example of such are affine invariant submanifolds, that is, closures of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbits. We prove that the boundary of any linear subvariety is again given by linear equations in generalized period coordinates of the boundary. Our main technical tool is an asymptotic analysis of periods near the boundary of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials which yields further techniques and results of independent interest.
We consider the problem to determine which blow-ups along subvarieties in products of two projective spaces are log Fano. By describing the nef cones of such blow-ups with special centers, we give a partial classification result. For each example, explicit boundary divisors are also given.
We give a complete description of the cohomology ring $A^*(\overline Z)$ of a compactification of a linear subvariety $Z$ of a torus in a smooth toric variety whose fan $Σ$ is supported on the tropicalization of $Z$. It turns out that cocycles on $\overline Z$ canonically correspond to Minkowski weights on $Σ$ and that the cup product is described by the intersection product on the tropical matroid variety $\operatorname{Trop}(Z)$.
For a linear subvariety $M$ of a stratum of meromorphic differentials, we investigate its closure in the multi-scale compactification constructed by Bainbridge-Chen-Gendron-Grushevsky-Möller. We prove various restrictions on the type of defining linear equations in period coordinates for $M$ near its boundary, and prove that the closure is locally a toric variety. As applications, we give a fundamentally new proof of a generalization of the cylinder deformation theorem of Wright to the case of meromorphic strata, and construct a smooth compactification of the Hurwitz space of covers of the Rie…
We give the full classification of smooth toric Legendrian subvarieties in projective space. We also prove that under some minor assumptions the group of linear automorphisms preserving given Legendrian subvariety preserves the contact structure of the ambient projective space.
We study the moduli space of $J$-holomorphic subvarieties in a $4$-dimensional symplectic manifold. For an arbitrary tamed almost complex structure, we show that the moduli space of a sphere class is formed by a family of linear system structures as in algebraic geometry. Among the applications, we show various uniqueness results of $J$-holomorphic subvarieties, e.g. for the fiber and exceptional classes in irrational ruled surfaces. On the other hand, non-uniqueness and other exotic phenomena of subvarieties in complex rational surfaces are explored. In particular, connected subvarieties in a…
Let Bun_G be the moduli space of G-bundles on a smooth complex projective curve. Motivated by a study of boundary conditions in mirror symmetry, D. Gaiotto associated to any symplectic representation of G a Lagrangian subvariety of the cotangent bundle of Bun_G. We give a simple interpretation of (a generalization of) Gaiotto's construction in terms of derived symplectic geometry. This allows to consider a more general setting where symplectic G-representations are replaced by arbitrary symplectic manifolds equipped with a Hamiltonian G-action and with an action of the multiplicative group tha…
We show that the complex Radon transform realizes an isomorphism between the space of residual $\bar\partial$-cohomologies of a locally complete intersection subvariety in a linearly concave domain of ${\C}P^n$ and the space of holomorphic solutions of the associated homogeneous system of differential equations withconstant coefficients in the dual domain in $({\C}P^n)^*$.
Double ramification loci, also known as strata of $0$-differentials, are algebraic subvarieties of the moduli space of smooth curves parametrizing Riemann surfaces such that there exists a rational function with prescribed ramification over $0$ and $\infty$. We describe the closure of double ramification loci inside the Deligne-Mumford compactification in geometric terms. To a rational function we associate its exact differential, which allows us to realize double ramification loci as linear subvarieties of strata of meromorphic differentials. We then obtain a geometric description of the clos…
When a reductive group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective scheme $X$ there is a stratification of $X$ into $G$-invariant locally closed subschemes, with an open stratum $X^{ss}$ formed by the semistable points in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory which has a categorical quotient $X^{ss} \to X//G$. In this article we describe a method for constructing quotients of the unstable strata. As an application, we construct moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type with some extra data (an '$n$-rigidification') on a projective base.
We study Toeplitz operators on Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions on symmetric domains, and more generally on certain algebraic subvarieties, determined by integration over boundary orbits of the underlying domain. The main result classifies the irreducible representations of the Toeplitz $C^*$-algebra generated by Toeplitz operators with continuous symbol. This relies on the limit behavior of "hypergeometric" measures under certain peaking functions.
Let W be a projective variety of dimension n+1, L a free line bundle on W, X in $H^0(L^d)$ a hypersurface of degree d which is generic among those given by sums of monomials from $L$, and let $f : Y \to X$ be a generically finite map from a smooth m-fold Y. We suppose that f is r-filling, i.e. upon deforming X in $H^0(L^d)$, f deforms in a family such that the corresponding deformations of $Y^r$ dominate $W^r$. Under these hypotheses we give a lower bound for the dimension of a certain linear system on the Cartesian product $Y^r$ having certain vanishing order on a diagonal locus as well as on…
We study subvarieties of the flag variety called Hessenberg varieties, defined by certain linear conditions. These subvarieties arise naturally in applications including geometric representation theory, number theory, and numerical analysis. We describe completely the homology of Hessenberg varieties over GL_n(C) and show that they have no odd-dimensional homology. We provide an explicit geometric construction which partitions each Hessenberg variety into pieces homeomorphic to affine space. We characterize these affine pieces by fillings of Young tableaux and show that the dimension of the af…
Given a homogeneous component of an exterior algebra, we characterize those subspaces in which every nonzero element is decomposable. In geometric terms, this corresponds to characterizing the projective linear subvarieties of the Grassmann variety with its Plucker embedding. When the base field is finite, we consider the more general question of determining the maximum number of points on sections of Grassmannians by linear subvarieties of a fixed (co)dimension. This corresponds to a known open problem of determining the complete weight hierarchy of linear error correcting codes associated to…
To each subvariety $X$ in projective $n$-space of codimension $m$ we associate an integer sequence of length $m + 1$ from $1$ to the degree of $X$ recording the maximal cardinalities of finite, reduced intersections of $X$ with linear subvarieties. We call this the sequence of secant indices of $X$. Similar numbers have been studied independently with the aim of classifying subvarieties with extremal secant spaces. Our focus in this note is the study of the combinatorial properties that the secant indices satisfy collectively. We show these sequences are strictly increasing for nondegenerate s…
For $k \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, let $\mathcal{H}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ denote the vector bundle over $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ whose every fiber consists of meromorphic $k$-differentials with poles of order at most $k-1$ on a fixed Riemman surface of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points (all the poles must be located at the marked points). The bundle $\mathcal{H}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ and its associated projective bundle $\mathbb{P}\mathcal{H}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ admit natural extensions, denoted by $\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ and $\mathbb{P}\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ respectively, to the Deligne-Mumford compact…
We construct a family of examples of Legendrian subvarieties in some projective spaces. Although most of them are singular, a new example of smooth Legendrian variety in dimension 8 is in this family. The 8-fold has interesting properties: it is a compactification of the special linear group, a Fano manifold of index 5 and Picard number 1.
Fano varieties are subvarieties of the Grassmannian whose points parametrize linear subspaces contained in a given projective variety. These expository notes give an account of results on Fano varieties of complete intersections, with a view toward an application in machine learning. The prerequisites have been kept to a minimum in order to make these results accessible to a broad audience.
In this article we develop a new way of systematically constructing infinitely many families of smooth subvarieties $X$ of any given dimension $m$, $m \geq 3$, and any given codimension in $\mathbb P^N$, embedded by complete subcanonical linear series, and, in particular, in the range of Hartshorne's conjecture. We accomplish this by showing the existence of everywhere non--reduced schemes called ropes, embedded in $\mathbb P^N$, and by smoothing them. In the range $3 \leq m < N/2$, we construct smooth subvarieties, embedded by complete subcanonical linear series, that are not complete interse…
Let SU_C(2) be the moduli space of rank 2 semistable vector bundles with trivial de terminant on a smooth complex algebraic curve C of genus g > 1, we assume C non-hyperellptic if g > 2. In this paper we construct large families of pointed rational normal curves over certain linear sections of SU_C(2). This allows us to give an interpretation of these subvarieties of SUC(2) in terms of the moduli space of curves M_{0,2g}. In fact, there exists a natural linear map SU_C(2) -> P^g with modular meaning, whose fibers are birational to M_{0,2g}, the moduli space of 2g-pointed genus zero curves. If …
In this paper we prove that certain linear systems (and all their multiples) of plane curves with general base points and zero--self intersection are empty, thus exhibiting further examples of rays at the boundary of the Mori cone of a general blow--up of the plane.
