We compare predictions for galaxy-galaxy lensing profiles and clustering from the Henriques et al. (2015) public version of the Munich semi-analytical model of galaxy formation (SAM) and the IllustrisTNG suite, primarily TNG300, with observations from KiDS+GAMA and SDSS-DR7 using four different selection functions for the lenses (stellar mass, stellar mass and group membership, stellar mass and isolation criteria, stellar mass and colour). We find that this version of the SAM does not agree well with the current data for stellar mass-only lenses with $M_\ast > 10^{11}\,M_\odot$. By decreasing the merger time for satellite galaxies as well as reducing the radio-mode AGN accretion efficiency in the SAM, we obtain better agreement, both for the lensing and the clustering, at the high mass end. We show that the new model is consistent with the signals for central galaxies presented in Velliscig et al. (2017). Turning to the hydrodynamical simulation, TNG300 produces good lensing predictions, both for stellar mass-only ($χ^2 = 1.81$ compared to $χ^2 = 7.79$ for the SAM), and locally brightest galaxies samples ($χ^2 = 3.80$ compared to $χ^2 = 5.01$). With added dust corrections to the colours it matches the SDSS clustering signal well for red low mass galaxies. We find that both the SAMs and TNG300 predict $\sim 50\,\%$ excessive lensing signals for intermediate mass red galaxies with $10.2 < \log_{10} M_\ast [ M_\odot ] < 11.2$ at $r \approx 0.6\,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$, which require further theoretical development.
Cosmic shear can only be measured where there are galaxies. This source-lens clustering (SLC) effect has two sources, intrinsic source clustering and cosmic magnification (magnification/size bias). Lensing tomography can suppress the former. However, this reduction is limited by the existence of photo-z error and nonzero redshift bin width. Furthermore, SLC induced by cosmic magnification cannot be reduced by lensing tomography. Through N-body simulations, we quantify the impact of SLC on the lensing power spectrum in the context of lensing tomography. We consider both the standard estimator a…
We explore the potential of using intensity mapping surveys (MeerKAT, SKA) and optical galaxy surveys (DES, LSST) to detect HI clustering and weak gravitational lensing of 21cm emission in auto- and cross-correlation. Our forecasts show that high precision measurements of the clustering and lensing signals can be made in the near future using the intensity mapping technique. Such studies can be used to test the intensity mapping method, and constrain parameters such as the HI density $Ω_{\rm HI}$, the HI bias $b_{\rm HI}$ and the galaxy-HI correlation coefficient $r_{\rm HI-g}$.

A promising route for revealing the existence of dark matter structures on mass scales smaller than the faintest galaxies is through their effect on strong gravitational lenses. We examine the role of local, lens-proximate clustering in boosting the lensing probability relative to contributions from substructure and unclustered line-of-sight (LOS) halos. Using two cosmological simulations that can resolve halo masses of $M_{\rm halo} \simeq 10^{9}\ M_{\odot}$ (in a simulation box of length $L_{\rm box}{\sim}100\,{\rm Mpc}$) and $10^{7}\ M_{\odot}$ ($L_{\rm box}\sim20\,{\rm Mpc}$), we demonstra…
We study the impact of neglecting lensing magnification in galaxy clustering analyses for future galaxy surveys, considering the LambdaCDM model and two extensions: massive neutrinos and modifications of General Relativity. Our study focuses on the biases on the constraints and on the estimation of the cosmological parameters. We perform a comprehensive investigation of these two effects for the upcoming photometric and spectroscopic galaxy surveys Euclid and SKA for different redshift binning configurations. We also provide a fitting formula for the magnification bias of SKA. Our results show…
We investigate the inclusion of clustering maps in a weak lensing Minkowski functional (MF) analysis of DES-like and LSST-like simulations to constrain cosmological parameters. The standard 3x2pt approach to lensing and clustering data uses two-point correlations as its primary statistic; MFs, morphological statistics describing the shape of matter fields, provide additional information for non-Gaussian fields. Previous analyses have studied MFs of lensing convergence maps; in this project we explore their simultaneous application to clustering maps. We employ a simplified linear galaxy bias m…
Combining different observational probes, such as galaxy clustering and weak lensing, is a promising technique for unveiling the physics of the Universe with upcoming dark energy experiments. Whilst this strategy significantly improves parameter constraints, decreasing the degeneracies of individual analyses and controlling the systematics, processing data from tens of millions of galaxies is not a trivial task. In this work we derive and test a new estimator for joint clustering and lensing data analysis, maximising the scientific return and decreasing the computational cost. Our estimator co…
We present a formalism for jointly fitting pre- and post-reconstruction redshift-space clustering (RSD) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) plus gravitational lensing (of the CMB) that works directly with the observed 2-point statistics. The formalism is based upon (effective) Lagrangian perturbation theory and a Lagrangian bias expansion, which models RSD, BAO and galaxy-lensing cross correlations within a consistent dynamical framework. As an example we present an analysis of clustering measured by the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey in combination with CMB lensing measured by Pla…
We investigate the expected cosmological constraints from a combination of weak lensing and large-scale galaxy clustering using realistic redshift distributions. Introducing a systematic bias in the weak lensing redshift distributions (of 0.05 in redshift) produces a $>2σ$ bias in the recovered matter power spectrum amplitude and dark energy equation of state, for preliminary Stage III surveys. We demonstrate that these cosmological errors can be largely removed by marginalising over unknown biases in the assumed weak lensing redshift distributions, if we assume high quality redshift informati…
We present high signal-to-noise galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements of the BOSS CMASS sample using 250 square degrees of weak lensing data from CFHTLenS and CS82. We compare this signal with predictions from mock catalogs trained to match observables including the stellar mass function and the projected and two dimensional clustering of CMASS. We show that the clustering of CMASS, together with standard models of the galaxy-halo connection, robustly predicts a lensing signal that is 20-40% larger than observed. Detailed tests show that our results are robust to a variety of systematic effects. …
Recent analyses show that $Λ$CDM-based models optimised to reproduce the clustering of massive galaxies overestimate their gravitational lensing by about 30\%, the so-called lensing is low problem. Using a state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulation, we show that this discrepancy reflects shortcomings in standard galaxy-halo connection models rather than tensions within the $Λ$CDM paradigm itself. Specifically, this problem results from ignoring a variety of galaxy formation effects, including assembly bias, segregation of satellite galaxies relative to dark matter, and baryonic effects on the …
Recently, Leauthaud et al discovered that the small-scale lensing signal of Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) galaxies is up to 40% lower than predicted by the standard models of the galaxy-halo connections that reproduced the observed galaxy stellar mass function (SMF) and clustering. We revisit such "lensing is low" discrepancy by performing a comprehensive Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) modelling of the SMF, clustering, and lensing of BOSS LOWZ and CMASS samples at Planck cosmology. We allow the selection function of satellite galaxies to vary as a function of stellar mass …
The spatial distribution of galaxies and their gravitational lensing signal offer complementary tests of galaxy formation physics and cosmology. However, their synergy can only be fully exploited if both probes are modelled accurately and consistently. In this paper, we demonstrate that this can be achieved using an extension of Subhalo Abundance Matching, dubbed SHAMe. Specifically, we use mock catalogues built from the TNG300 hydrodynamical simulation to show that SHAMe can simultaneously model the multipoles of the redshift-space galaxy correlation function and galaxy-galaxy lensing, withou…
Observables such as the luminosity function of galaxies, Φ(M), the projected clustering of galaxies, w_p(r_p), and the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal, ΔΣ, are often measured from galaxy redshift surveys assuming a fiducial cosmological model for calculating distances to and between galaxies. There is a growing number of studies that perform joint analyses of these measurements and constrain cosmological parameters. We quantify the amount by which such measurements systematically vary as the fiducial cosmology used for the measurements is changed, and show that these effects can be significant at…
A systematic study of projection biases in the Weak Lensing analysis of cosmic shear and the combination of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing
A joint analysis of the clustering of galaxies and their weak gravitational lensing signal is well-suited to simultaneously constrain the galaxy-halo connection as well as the cosmological parameters by breaking the degeneracy between galaxy bias and the amplitude of clustering signal. In a series of two papers, we perform such an analysis at the highest redshift ($z\sim0.53$) in the literature using CMASS galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Eleventh Data Release (SDSS-III/BOSS DR11) catalog spanning 8300~deg$^2$. In this paper, we present detai…
The combination of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering data has the potential to simultaneously constrain both the cosmological and galaxy formation models. In this paper we perform a comprehensive exploration of these signals and their covariances through a combination of analytic and numerical approaches. First, we derive analytic expressions for the projected galaxy correlation function and stacked tangential shear profile and their respective covariances, which include Gaussian and discreteness noise terms. Secondly, we measure these quantities from mock galaxy catalogues obtained …
The clustering of matter on cosmological scales is an essential probe for studying the physical origin and composition of our Universe. To date, most of the direct studies have focused on shear-shear weak lensing correlations, but it is also possible to extract the dark matter clustering by combining galaxy-clustering and galaxy-galaxy-lensing measurements. In this study we develop a method that can constrain the dark matter correlation function from galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy-lensing measurements, by focusing on the correlation coefficient between the galaxy and matter overdensity fi…
We estimate the amplitude of the source-lens clustering bias and of the intrinsic-alignment bias of weak lensing estimators of the two-point and three-point convergence and cosmic-shear correlation functions. We use a linear galaxy bias model for the galaxy-density correlations, as well as a linear intrinsic-alignment model. For the three-point and four-point density correlations, we use analytical or semi-analytical models, based on a hierarchical ansatz or a combination of one-loop perturbation theory with a halo model. For two-point statistics, we find that the source-lens clustering bias i…
Galaxy cluster centring is a key issue for precision cosmology studies using galaxy surveys. Mis-identification of central galaxies causes systematics in various studies such as cluster lensing, satellite kinematics, and galaxy clustering. The red-sequence Matched-filter Probabilistic Percolation (redMaPPer) estimates the probability that each member galaxy is central from photometric information rather than specifying one central galaxy. The redMaPPer estimates can be used for calibrating the off-centring effect, however, the centring algorithm has not previously been well-tested. We test the…
We explore three different methods based on weak lensing to extract cosmological constraints from the large-scale structure. In the first approach (method I), small-scale galaxy lensing measurements of their halo mass provide a constraint on the halo bias, which can be combined with the large-scale galaxy clustering to measure the dark matter clustering. In the second approach (method II), large-scale galaxy clustering and large-scale galaxy-galaxy lensing can be combined into a direct measurement of the dark matter clustering. These two methods can be combined into one method I+II to make use…
Maximising the information that can be extracted from weak lensing measurements is a key goal for upcoming surveys such as LSST and Euclid. This is typically achieved through statistics that are complementary to the cosmic shear two-point correlation function, the most well established of which is the weak lensing peak abundance. In this work, we study the clustering of weak lensing peaks, and present parameter constraint forecasts for an LSST-like survey. We use the cosmoslics $w$CDM simulations to measure the peak two-point correlation function for a range of cosmological parameters, and use…
The joint analysis of clustering and stacked gravitational lensing of galaxy clusters in large surveys can constrain the formation and evolution of structures and the cosmological parameters. On scales outside a few virial radii, the halo bias, $b$, is linear and the lensing signal is dominated by the correlated distribution of matter around galaxy clusters. We discuss a method to measure the power spectrum amplitude $σ_8$ and $b$ based on a minimal modelling. We considered a sample of $\sim 120000$ clusters photometrically selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in the redshift range $0.1<…
Angular two-point statistics of large-scale structure observables are important cosmological probes. To reach the high accuracy required by the statistical precision of future surveys, some of these statistics may need to be computed without the commonly employed Limber approximation; the exact computation however requires integration over Bessel functions, and a brute-force evaluation is slow to converge. We present a new method based on our generalized FFTLog algorithm for the efficient computation of angular power spectra beyond the Limber approximation. The new method significantly simplif…
Massive neutrinos, due to their free streaming, produce a suppression in the matter power spectrum at intermediate and small scales which could be probed by galaxy clustering and/or weak lensing observables. This effect happens at scales that are also influenced by baryon feedback, i.e. galactic winds or Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback, which in realistic hydrodynamic simulations has also been shown to produce a suppression of power. Leaving aside, for the moment, the complex issue of galaxy bias, we focus here on matter clustering and tomographic weak lensing, we investigate the possibl…
We present a novel simulation-based cosmological analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy redshift-space clustering. Compared to analysis methods based on perturbation theory, our simulation-based approach allows us to probe a much wider range of scales, $0.4 \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$ to $63 \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$, including highly non-linear scales, and marginalises over astrophysical effects such as assembly bias. We apply this framework to data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey LOWZ sample cross-correlated with state-of-the-art gravitational lensing catalogues from t…

We measure a combination of gravitational lensing, galaxy clustering, and redshift-space distortions called $E_G$. The quantity $E_G$ probes both parts of metric potential and is insensitive to galaxy bias and $σ_8$. These properties make it an attractive statistic to test $Λ$CDM, General Relativity and its alternate theories. We have combined CMASS DR11 with CFHTLenS and recent measurements of $β$ from RSD analysis, and find $E_G(z = 0.57) = 0.42 \pm 0.056$, an 13\% measurement in agreement with the prediction of general relativity $E_G(z = 0.57) = 0.396 \pm 0.011$ using the Planck 2015 cosmo…
We propose a novel method to measure the $E_G$ statistic from clustering alone. The $E_G$ statistic provides an elegant way of testing the consistency of General Relativity by comparing the geometry of the Universe, probed through gravitational lensing, with the motion of galaxies in that geometry. Current $E_G$ estimators combine galaxy clustering with gravitational lensing, measured either from cosmic shear or from CMB lensing. In this paper, we construct a novel estimator for $E_G$, using only clustering information obtained from two tracers of the large-scale structure: intensity mapping a…
Weak gravitational lensing alters the apparent separations between observed sources, potentially affecting clustering statistics. We derive a general expression for the lensing deflection which is valid for any three-point statistic, and investigate its effect on the three-point clustering correlation function. We find that deflection of the clustering correlation function is greatest at around $z=2$. It is most prominent in regions where the correlation function varies rapidly, in particular at the baryon acoustic oscillation scale where it smooths out the peaks and troughs, reducing the peak…
We determine the error introduced in a joint halo model analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering observables when adopting the standard approximation of linear halo bias. Considering the Kilo-Degree Survey, we forecast that ignoring the non-linear halo bias would result in up to 5$σ$ offsets in the recovered cosmological parameters describing structure growth, $S_8$, and the matter density parameter, $Ω_{\mathrm{m}}$. We include the scales $10^{-1.3}<r_{\rm{p}} \ / h^{-1}\, \mathrm{Mpc}<10$ in the data vector, and the direction of these offsets are shown to depend on the freedom…
We examine the influence of percent-level dark energy corrections to the nonlinear matter power spectrum on constraints of the dark energy equation of state from future weak lensing probes. We explicitly show that a poor approximation (off by > 10%) to the nonlinear corrections causes a > 1 sigma bias on the determination of the dark energy equation of state. Future weak lensing surveys must therefore incorporate dark energy modifications to the nonlinear matter power spectrum accurate to the percent-level, to avoid introducing significant bias in their measurements. For the WMAP5 cosmology, t…
The lensing convergence measurable with future CMB surveys like CMB-S4 will be highly correlated with the clustering observed by deep photometric large scale structure (LSS) surveys such as the LSST, with cross-correlation coefficient as high as 95\%. This will enable use of sample variance cancellation techniques to determine cosmological parameters, and use of cross-correlation measurements to break parameter degeneracies. Assuming large sky overlap between CMB-S4 and LSST, we show that a joint analysis of CMB-S4 lensing and LSST clustering can yield very tight constraints on the matter ampl…
An optical cluster finder inevitably suffers from projection effects, where it misidentifies a superposition of galaxies in multiple halos along the line-of-sight as a single cluster. Using mock cluster catalogs built from cosmological N-body simulations, we quantify the impact of these projection effects with a particular focus on the observables of interest for cluster cosmology, namely the cluster lensing and the cluster clustering signals. We find that "observed" clusters, i.e. clusters identified by our cluster finder algorithm, exhibit lensing and clustering signals that deviate from exp…
Cosmology and Source Redshift Constraints from Galaxy Clustering and Tomographic Weak Lensing with HSC Y3 and SDSS using the Point-Mass Correction Model
The existence of galaxy intrinsic clustering severely hampers the weak lensing reconstruction from cosmic magnification. In paper I \citep{Yang2011}, we proposed a minimal variance estimator to overcome this problem. By utilizing the different dependences of cosmic magnification and galaxy intrinsic clustering on galaxy flux, we demonstrated that the otherwise overwhelming galaxy intrinsic clustering can be significantly suppressed such that lensing maps can be reconstructed with promising accuracy. This procedure relies heavily on the accuracy of determining the galaxy bias from the same data…
The combination of galaxy-galaxy lensing (GGL) with galaxy clustering is one of the most promising routes to determining the amplitude of matter clustering at low redshifts. We show that extending clustering+GGL analyses from the linear regime down to $\sim 0.5 \, h^{-1}$ Mpc scales increases their constraining power considerably, even after marginalizing over a flexible model of non-linear galaxy bias. Using a grid of cosmological N-body simulations, we construct a Taylor-expansion emulator that predicts the galaxy autocorrelation $ξ_{\text{gg}}(r)$ and galaxy-matter cross-correlation $ξ_{\te…
In the near future, the overlap of the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the Simons Observatory (SO) will present an ideal opportunity for joint cosmological dataset analyses. In this paper we simulate the joint likelihood analysis of these two experiments using six two-point functions derived from galaxy position, galaxy shear, and CMB lensing convergence fields. Our analysis focuses on realistic noise and systematics models and we find that the dark energy Figure-of-Merit (FoM) increases by 53% (92%) from LSST-only to LSST+SO in Year 1 (Year 6). We also investigate…
Cross-correlating cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing and galaxy clustering has been shown to greatly improve the constraints on the local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) parameter $f_{\rm NL}$ by reducing sample variance and also parameter degeneracies. To model the full use of the 3D information of galaxy clustering, we forecast $f_{\rm NL}$ measurements using the decomposition in the spherical Fourier-Bessel (SFB) basis, which can be naturally cross-correlated with 2D CMB lensing in spherical harmonics. In the meantime, such a decomposition would also enable us to constrain the growt…
The weak gravitational lensing distortion of distant galaxy images (defined as sources) probes the projected large-scale matter distribution in the Universe. To improve quality in the 3D mass mapping using 3D-lensing, we combine the lensing information with the spatial clustering of a population of galaxies that trace the matter density with a known galaxy bias (defined as tracers). For our minimum variance estimator, merely all the second-order bias of the tracers has to be known, which can in principle be self-consistently constrained in the data by lensing techniques. This synergy introduce…

ZwCl 2341.1+0000, a merging galaxy cluster with disturbed X-ray morphology and widely separated ($\sim$3 Mpc) double radio relics, was thought to be an extremely massive ($10-30 \times 10^{14} M_\odot$) and complex system with little known about its merger history. We present JVLA 2-4 GHz observations of the cluster, along with new spectroscopy from our Keck/DEIMOS survey, and apply Gaussian Mixture Modeling to the three-dimensional distribution of 227 confirmed cluster galaxies. After adopting the Bayesian Information Criterion to avoid overfitting, which we discover can bias total dynamical …
In a tomographic approach, we measure the cross-correlation between the CMB lensing reconstructed from the Planck satellite and the galaxies of the photometric redshift catalogue based on the combination of the South Galactic Cap u-band Sky Survey (SCUSS), Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data. We perform the analyses considering six redshift bins spanning the range of $0.1 <z<0.7$. From the estimates of the galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-CMB lensing power spectrum, we derive the galaxy bias and the amplitude of the cross-correlation for each redshift b…
The characterization of dark energy is a central task of cosmology. To go beyond a cosmological constant, we need to introduce at least an equation of state and a sound speed and consider observational tests that involve perturbations. If dark energy is not completely homogeneous on observable scales then the Poisson equation is modified and dark matter clustering is directly affected. One can then search for observational effects of dark energy clustering using dark matter as a probe. In this paper we exploit an analytical approximate solution of the perturbation equations in a general dark e…
We present the first detailed analysis of the connection between galaxies and their dark matter halos for the unWISE galaxy catalog -- a full-sky, infrared-selected sample built from WISE data, containing over 500 million galaxies. Using unWISE galaxy-galaxy auto-correlation and Planck CMB lensing-galaxy cross-correlation measurements down to 10 arcmin angular scales, we constrain the halo occupation distribution (HOD), a model describing how central and satellite galaxies are distributed within dark matter halos, for three unWISE} galaxy samples at mean redshifts $\bar{z} \approx 0.6$, $1.1$,…
The capacity of Stage IV lensing surveys to measure the neutrino mass sum and differentiate between the normal and inverted mass hierarchies depends on the impact of nuisance parameters describing small-scale baryonic astrophysics and intrinsic alignments. For a Euclid-like survey, we perform the first combined weak lensing and galaxy clustering Fisher analysis with baryons, intrinsic alignments, and massive neutrinos for both hierarchies. We use a matter power spectrum generated from a halo model that captures the impact of baryonic feedback and adiabatic contraction. For weak lensing, we fin…
We implement a model for the two-point statistics of biased tracers that combines dark matter dynamics from $N$-body simulations with an analytic Lagrangian bias expansion. Using Aemulus, a suite of $N$-body simulations built for emulation of cosmological observables, we emulate the cosmology dependence of these nonlinear spectra from redshifts $z = 0$ to $z=2$. We quantify the accuracy of our emulation procedure, which is sub-per cent at $k=1\, h {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ for the redshifts probed by upcoming surveys and improves at higher redshifts. We demonstrate its ability to describe the statistics…
Accurate covariance matrices for two-point functions are critical for inferring cosmological parameters in likelihood analyses of large-scale structure surveys. Among various approaches to obtaining the covariance, analytic computation is much faster and less noisy than estimation from data or simulations. However, the transform of covariances from Fourier space to real space involves integrals with two Bessel integrals, which are numerically slow and easily affected by numerical uncertainties. Inaccurate covariances may lead to significant errors in the inference of the cosmological parameter…

We present the 2-degree Field Lensing Survey (2dFLenS), a new galaxy redshift survey performed at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. 2dFLenS is the first wide-area spectroscopic survey specifically targeting the area mapped by deep-imaging gravitational lensing fields, in this case the Kilo-Degree Survey. 2dFLenS obtained 70,079 redshifts in the range z < 0.9 over an area of 731 sq deg, and is designed to extend the datasets available for testing gravitational physics and promote the development of relevant algorithms for joint imaging and spectroscopic analysis. The redshift sample consists firs…
We study the importance of gravitational lensing in the modelling of the number counts of galaxies. We confirm previous results for photometric surveys, showing that lensing cannot be neglected in a survey like LSST since it would infer a significant shift of cosmological parameters. For a spectroscopic survey like SKA2, we find that neglecting lensing in the monopole, quadrupole and hexadecapole of the correlation function also induces an important shift of parameters. For $Λ$CDM parameters, the shift is moderate, of the order of 0.6$σ$ or less. However, for a model-independent analysis, that…
