We present the C++ code BSMPT v2 which is an extension of the previous code BSMPT for the calculation of the strength of the electroweak phase transition in extended Higgs sectors. The new version BSMPT v2 includes the features of BSMPT and extends the already implemented models (the 2-Higgs-Doublet model (2HDM) in its CP-conserving and CP-violating versions and the Next-to-2HDM) by the Complex Singlet Extension of the Standard Model (CxSM). The major upgrade is the implementation of the computation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (at present for the C2HDM) in two different approximation, called the FH and the VIA approach. Furthermore, the possibility of varying the renormalisation scale in the loop-corrected effective potential has been added. These changes and further smaller modifications are described in this manual. Additionally, a detailed explanation of the procedure for the implementation of new models is given, which has also changed with respect to the previous version.
We provide the C++ tool BSMPT for calculating the strength of the electroweak phase transition in extended Higgs sectors. This relies on the loop-corrected effective potential at finite temperature including daisy resummation of the bosonic masses. The program allows to compute the vacuum expectation value (VEV) $v$ of the potential as a function of the temperature, and in particular the critical VEV $v_c$ at the temperature $T_c$ where the phase transition takes place. In addition, the loop-corrected trilinear Higgs self-couplings are provided. We apply an 'on-shell' renormalization scheme in…
Recently we presented the upgrade of our code BSMPT for the calculation of the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) to BSMPT v2 which now includes the computation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe (BAU) in the CP-violating 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (C2HDM). In this paper we use {\tt BSMPT v2} to investigate the size of the BAU that is obtained in the C2HDM with the two implemented approaches FH and VIA to derive the transport equations, by taking into account all relevant theoretical and experimental constraints. We identify similarities and differences in the results computed with the two me…
The entropy production scenarios due to electroweak phase transition (EWPT) in the framework of the minimal extension of standard model namely two Higgs doublet model(2HDM) is revisited. The possibility of first order phase transition is discussed. Intense parameter scanning is done with the help of BSMPT, a C++ package. Numerical calculations are performed in order to calculate the entropy production with numerous benchmark points.
Electroweak phase transition in the simplest extension of the standard model namely two Higgs doublet model and entropy production within this framework is studied. We have considered several benchmark points which were called using BSMPT, a C++ package, within the limit of $vev/T_C>0.2$ are studied, and corresponding entropy productions are shown in this paper.
We investigate the potential of the model `CP in the Dark' for providing a strong first-order electroweak phase transition (SFOEWPT) by taking into account all relevant theoretical and experimental constraints. For the derivation of the strength of the phase transition we use the one-loop corrected, daisy-resummed effective potential at finite temperature, implemented in the C++ code BSMPT, to determine the global minimum at the critical temperature. The model `CP in the Dark' provides a dark matter (DM) candidate as well as explicit CP violation in the dark sector. We find a broad range of vi…
We perform a comprehensive study of the allowed parameter space of the Two Higgs Doublet Model of Type II (2HDM-II). Using the theoretical framework flavio we combine the most recent flavour, collider and electroweak precision observables with theoretical constraints to obtain bounds on the mass spectrum of the theory. In particular we find that the 2HDM-II fits the data slightly better than the Standard Model (SM) with best fit values of the heavy Higgs masses around 2 TeV and a value of $\tan β\approx 4$. Moreover, we conclude that the wrong-sign limit is disfavoured by Higgs signal strength…
We analyse diffractive weak boson production in $pp$ collisions. We show that the measurement of $W$ boson production asymmetry in the diffractive $pp$ collisions is a valuable method to test the concept of the flavour symmetric pomeron parton distributions.
We investigate an extension of the standard model with a second Higgs doublet, showing a two stage phase transition. Wash-out of a baryon asymmetry after the phase transition can be easily avoided in this class of models. B+L transitions are more strongly suppressed in the intermediate phase than in the high temperature symmetric phase, however. Therefore, it becomes more difficult if not impossible to generate a sufficient baryon asymmetry during the phase transition.
We calculate the baryon asymmetry generated at the electroweak phase transition in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, using a new method to compute the CP-violating asymmetry in the Higgsino flux reflected into the unbroken phase. The method is based on a Higgs insertion expansion. We find that the CP asymmetry at leading order is proportional to the change in $\tan β$ in the bubble wall, which is at most of order $10^{-2}$, while at next-to-leading order this suppression factor disappears. This result may enhance the final baryon asymmetry generated during the electroweak phase transi…
We compute the net electric current generated during a first order electroweak phase transition when fermions transit from the false to the true vacuum. This current is generated by the CP-violating fermion interaction with the Higgs during the phase transition and is quantified in terms of a CP-violating phase in the bubble wall separating the symmetric from the symmetry-broken phases. We comment on the seed magnetic field that this current is able to generate and it is possible implications for magnetogenesis in the early universe during the electroweak phase transition.
We correct a numerical error which led to an overestimate of the baryon asymmetry from supersymmetric electroweak baryogenesis in our paper JHEP07(2000)018. Updated dependences of the baryon asymmetry on chargino mass parameters and the bubble wall velocity are shown. We also include LEP-II-constraints on the chargino mass parameters. Combined with our corrected results for the baryon asymmetry these constraints imply that the phase in the chargino mass matrix must violate CP nearly maximally in order to generate a large enough baryon asymmetry. A number of other typographical errors are also …
We propose a new mechanism for late cosmological baryon asymmetry in models with first order electroweak phase transition. Lepton asymmetry arises through the decay of particles produced out of equilbrium in bubble collisions and is converted into baryon asymmetry by sphalerons. Supersymmetric models with explicitly broken R-parity may provide a suiatble framework for the implementation of this mechanism.
We consider a dark electroweak phase transition, during which a baryon asymmetry in the dark neutrons and an equal lepton asymmetry in the dark Dirac neutrinos can be simultaneously induced by the CP-violating reflection of the dark fermions off the expanding dark Higgs bubbles. The Yukawa couplings for generating the ordinary Majorana neutrino masses can partially convert the dark lepton asymmetry to an ordinary baryon asymmetry in association with the ordinary sphaleron processes. The dark neutron can have a determined mass to serve as a dark matter particle. By further imposing a proper mir…
We analyze the spontaneous baryogenesis and charge transport mechanisms suggested by Cohen, Kaplan and Nelson for baryon asymmetry generation in extended versions of electroweak theory. We find that accounting for non-perturbative chirality-breaking transitions due to strong sphalerons reduces the baryonic asymmetry by the factor $(m_t/πT)^2$ or $α_W$, provided those processes are in thermal equilibrium.
We calculate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe in the Z3-invariant Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model where the interactions of the singlino provide the necessary source of charge and parity violation. Using the closed time path formalism, we derive and solve transport equations for the cases where the singlet acquires a vacuum expectation value (VEV) before and during the electroweak phase transition. We perform a detailed scan to show how the baryon asymmetry varies throughout the relevant parameter space. Our results show that the case where the singlet acquires a VEV during t…
We present arguments that the CKM CP-violation in the standard model may be sufficient for the generation of the baryon asymmetry, if the electroweak transition in the early universe was of the cold, tachyonic, type after electroweak-scale inflation. A model implementing this is described which complies with the CMB constraints and which is falsifiable with the LHC. Numerical simulations of the tachyonic transition with an effective CP-bias indicate that the observed baryon asymmetry can be generated this way.
During a large period of time, the anomalous baryon number violating interactions are in equilibrium, when the $(B+L)$ asymmetry is washed out. If there is any lepton number violation during this period, that will also erase the $(B-L)$ asymmetry. As a result, survival of the baryon asymmetry of the universe pose strong constraints on lepton number violating interactions. We review here the constraints on the left-handed Majorana neutrino masses arising from this survival requirement of the baryon asymmetry of the universe. We then briefly review models of leptogenesis, where lepton number vio…
The generation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe is considered in the standard model of the electroweak theory with simple extensions of the Higgs sector. The propagation of quarks of masses up to about 5 GeV are considered, taking into account their markedly different dispersion relations due to propagation through the hot electroweak plasma. It is shown that the contribution of these lighter quarks to the baryon asymmetry can be comparable to that for the t quark considered earlier.
We present real-time lattice simulations of Cold Electroweak Baryogenesis, in which the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is generated during tachyonic electroweak symmetry breaking at the end of inflation. In the minimal realisation of the model, only three parameters remain undetermined: the strength of CP-violation, the Higgs mass and the speed of the symmetry breaking quench. The dependence of the asymmetry on these parameters is studied.
Electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) remains a theoretically attractive and experimentally testable scenario for explaining the cosmic baryon asymmetry. We review recent progress in computations of the baryon asymmetry within this framework and discuss their phenomenological consequences. We pay particular attention to methods for analyzing the electroweak phase transition and calculating CP-violating asymmetries, the development of Standard Model extensions that may provide the necessary ingredients for EWBG, and searches for corresponding signatures at the high energy, intensity, and cosmological…
The realisation that the electroweak anomaly can induce significant baryon number violation at high temperature and that the standard models of particle physics and cosmology contain all the ingredients needed for baryogenesis has led to vigourous search for viable models. The conclusions so far are that the Standard Model of particle physics cannot produce baryon asymmetry of required magnitude. It has too little $CP$ violation and sphaleronic transitions wipe out any asymmetry produced if the Higgs is heavier than about 50 GeV, a range already excluded by accelerator experiments. We review t…
It now seems plausible that the observed baryon asymmetry may have been produced at the electroweak phase transition. We review the considerations which lead to this conclusion, focusing on the obstacles to making reliable estimates. These arise from incomplete knowledge of baryon-violating rates near the phase transition, our limited understanding of the phase transition itself, and incomplete understanding of the mechanisms which actually lead to an asymmetry.
The electroweak symmetry breaking transition may supply the appropriate out-of-equilibrium conditions for baryogenesis if it is triggered sufficiently fast. This can happen at the end of low-scale inflation, prompting baryogenesis to occur during tachyonic preheating of the Universe, when the potential energy of the inflaton is transfered into Standard Model particles. With the proper amount of CP-violation present, the observed baryon number asymmetry can be reproduced. Within this framework of Cold Electroweak Baryogenesis, we study the dependence of the generated baryon asymmetry on the spe…
We investigate the impact of the tau and bottom Yukawa couplings on the transport dynamics for electroweak baryogenesis in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. Although it has generally been assumed in the literature that all Yukawa interactions except those involving the top quark are negligible, we find that the tau and bottom Yukawa interaction rates are too fast to be neglected. We identify an illustrative "lepton-mediated electroweak baryogenesis" scenario in which the baryon asymmetry is induced mainly through the presence of a left-handed leptonic charge. We derive analytic …
We describe a new effect which produces baryons at a first order electroweak phase transition. It operates when there is a CP-violating field present on propagating bubble walls. The novel aspect is that it involves a purely classical force, which alters the motion of particles across the wall and through diffusion creates a chiral asymmetry in front of the wall. We develop a technique for computing the baryon asymmetry using the Boltzmann equation, and a fluid approximation which allows us to model strong scattering effects. The final formula for the baryon asymmetry has a remarkably simple f…
We revisit the results of recent electroweak baryogenesis calculations and include all allowed large CP-violating supersymmetric phases. If the phases are large, the resulting baryon asymmetry can be considerably larger than the observed value $n_B/s \sim 4 \times 10^{-11}$. Much of the asymmetry must therefore be washed out, and we argue that the upper bound on the light Higgs mass is larger than the value reported in previous work.
We explore lepton-flavored electroweak baryogenesis, driven by CP-violation in leptonic Yukawa sector, using the $τ-μ$ system in the two Higgs doublet model as an example. This setup generically yields, together with the flavor-changing decay $h\to τμ$, a tree-level Jarlskog-invariant that can drive dynamical generation of baryon asymmetry during a first-order electroweak phase transition and results in CP-violating effect in the decay $h\to ττ$. We find that the observed baryon asymmetry can be generated in parameter space compatible with current experimental results for the decays $h\to τμ$,…
I summarize recent results (work done in collaboration with Kimmo Kainulainen and Axel Vischer) in which we make quantitative predictions for the baryon asymmetry of the universe in the charge transport mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis. Making favorable assumptions about the unknown quantities relevant to the problem, we find that the mechanism is marginally capable of creating a baryon asymmetry as large as that observed. (Talk presented at Great Lakes Cosmology Workshop, Case Western Reserve University, and at MRST `95, University of Rochester, May 6-8, 1995.)
We discuss the generation of the baryon asymmetry by a strong first order electroweak phase transition in the early universe, particularly in the context of the MSSM. This requires a thorough numerical treatment of the bubble wall profile in the case of two Higgs fields. CP violating complex particle masses varying with the Higgs field in the wall are essential. Since in the MSSM there is no indication of spontaneous CP violation around the critical temperature (contrary to the NMSSM) we have to rely on standard explicit CP violation. Using the WKB approximation for particles in the plasma we …
One of the most experimentally testable explanations for the origin of the baryon asymmetry of the universe is that it was created during the electroweak phase transition, in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Previous efforts have focused on the current for the difference of the two Higgsino fields, $H_1-H_2$, as the source of biasing sphalerons to create the baryon asymmetry. We point out that the current for the orthogonal linear combination, $H_1+H_2$, is larger by several orders of magnitude. Although this increases the efficiency of electroweak baryogenesis, we nevertheless find …
Majorana masses of the neutrino implies lepton number violation and is intimately related to the lepton asymmetry of the universe, which gets related to the baryon asymmetry of the universe in the presence of the sphalerons during the electroweak phase transition. Assuming that the baryon asymmetry of the universe is generated before the electroweak phase transition, it is possible to dicriminate different classes of models of neutrino masses. While see-saw mechanism and the triplet higgs mechanism are preferred, the Zee-type radiative models and the R-parity breaking models requires additiona…
Electroweak baryogenesis can occur in the ``adiabatic limit,'' in which expanding bubbles of true vacuum are assumed to have rather thick walls and be slowly moving. Here the problem of calculating the baryon asymmetry in this limit is reconsidered. A simple prescription for obtaining the relevant kinetic equations is given. An additional suppression beyond that usually assumed is found. This arises because the generation of an asymmetry requires violation of approximately conserved currents by Higgs expectation values, which are small near the front of the walls. As applications, the asymmetr…
We argue that the creation of a baryon asymmetry in the early universe is an intriguing case where several aspects of ``Beyond'' physics are needed. We then concentrate on baryogenesis in a strong first-order phase transition and discuss that supersymmetric variants of the electroweak theory (MSSM and some version of NMSSM) rather naturally provide the necessary ingredients. The charginos and the stops play a prominent role. We present CP-violating dispersion relations in the chargino sector and show results of a concrete model calculation for the asymmetry production based on quasi-classical …
The paper discusses the two-loop (NNLO) electroweak radiative corrections to the parity-violating Moller scattering asymmetry induced by insertions to boxes of electron and neutrino mass operators (fermion self-energies), vertex functions and boson self-energies. The results will be relevant to the ultra-precise 11 GeV MOLLER experiment planned at the Jefferson Laboratory, which will measure the weak charge of the electron and search for new physics. The numerical estimations for the NNLO contribution to the cross section asymmetry are presented.
We propose an alternative mechanism for leptogenesis at the electroweak scale, through the decays of a left-handed sneutrino. This scenario may be realized in supersymmetric models with non-zero Majorana masses for the neutrino superfield that lead to mixing and mass splitting between the left-handed sneutrino and the corresponding antisneutrino. Soft supersymmetry breaking provides new sources of CP violation in sneutrino-antisneutrino mixing that can generate a lepton asymmetry in decays of the left-handed sneutrino. We show how the three Sakharov conditions for generating the observed baryo…
Mixed NNLO QCD $\times$ electroweak corrections to single-Z production in pole approximation: differential distributions and forward-backward asymmetry
The possibility of baryogenesis at the electroweak phase transition is considered within the context of a minimal supersymmetric standard model with spontaneous R-parity violation. Provided that at least one of the sneutrino fields acquires a large enough vacuum expectation value, a sufficient baryon asymmetry can be created. Compared to R-parity conserving models the choice of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters is less restricted. The observed baryon asymmetry, n_B/s ~ 10^(-10), can be explained by this scenario and the produced baryon-to-entropy ratio may easily be as high as n_B/s ~ 10^…
We investigate if the CP violation necessary for successful electroweak baryogenesis may be sourced by the neutrino Yukawa couplings. In particular, we consider an electroweak scale Seesaw realization with sizable Yukawas where the new neutrino singlets form (pseudo)-Dirac pairs, as in the linear or inverse Seesaw variants. We find that the baryon asymmetry obtained strongly depends on how the neutrino masses vary within the bubble walls. Moreover, we also find that flavour effects critically impact the final asymmetry obtained and that, taking them into account, the observed value may be obta…
We consider the possibility of observing a parity violating but $CP$ conserving interaction in the symmetry breaking sector of the electroweak theory. We find that the best probe for such an interaction is a forward-backward asymmetry in $W^+W^-$ production from polarized $e^-_R e^+_L$ collisions. An observable asymmetry would be strong evidence against a custodial $SU(2)$ symmetry. We also discuss the effects of such an interaction in future $e^- γ$ colliders as well as in rare decays of $K$ and $B$ mesons.
Electroweak baryogenesis fails in the SM because of too small CP violation and the lack of a strong first-order phase transition. It has been shown that supersymmetric models allow for successful baryogenesis, where the Higgsinos play an important role in the transport processes that generate the asymmetry. I will demonstrate that also non-supersymmetric models can provide the observed baryon asymmetry. The top quark takes the role of the Higgsinos. Focusing on the two-Higgs doublet model, I will discuss details of the phase transition and consequences for Higgs physics and EDM searches.
We present the minimal model of electroweak baryogenesis induced by fermions. The model consists of an extension of the Standard Model with one electroweak singlet fermion and one pair of vector like doublet fermions with renormalizable couplings to the Higgs. A strong first order phase transition is radiatively induced by the singlet-doublet fermions, while the origin of the baryon asymmetry is due to asymmetric reflection of the same set of fermions on the expanding electroweak bubble wall. The singlet-doublet fermions are stabilized at the electroweak scale by chiral symmetries and the Higg…
One mechanism for generating a baryon asymmetry at the electroweak phase transition involves propagation of particle asymmetries generated by reflection from the bubble walls into the unbroken phase. Hitherto attention has focussed on top quarks because of their large mass and thus effective scattering from bubble walls. In this paper we point out that leptons may be more efficient mediators of this type of electroweak baryogenesis, particularly for thicker bubble walls favored by perturbative calculations. We carry out an analytic calculation of each stage of the mechanism and conclude it pro…

We investigate the viability of electroweak baryogenesis in a model with a first order electroweak phase transition induced by the addition of two gauge singlet scalars. A vector-like lepton doublet is introduced in order to provide CP violating interactions with the singlets and Standard Model leptons, and the asymmetry generation dynamics are examined using the vacuum expectation value insertion approximation. We find that such a model is readily capable of generating sufficient baryon asymmetry while satisfying electron electric dipole moment and collider phenomenology constraints.
I describe work done in collaboration with M. Joyce and K. Kainulainen on (1) the strength of the electroweak phase transition in the MSSM and (2) the mechanism for producing the baryon asymmetry during the phase transition. In the former we compare the effective potential and dimensional reduction methods for describing the phase transition and search the parameter space of the MSSM for those values where it is strong enough. In the latter we give a systematic computation of the baryon asymmetry due the CP-violating force acting on charginos in the vicinity of the bubble wall. We find that a …
We show that the CKM matrix can be the source of CP violation for electroweak baryogenesis if Yukawa couplings vary at the same time as the Higgs acquires its vacuum expectation value. This offers new avenues for explaining the baryon asymmetry of the universe. These ideas apply if the mechanism explaining the flavour structure of the Standard Model is connected to electroweak symmetry breaking. We compute the resulting baryon asymmetry for various low-scale flavour models and different configurations of the Yukawa coupling variation across the bubble wall, and show that it can naturally be of…
The viable window to electroweak baryogenesis in a supersymmetric $U(1)'$ model is studied in light of the 126 GeV Higgs boson. To investigate the decoupling of the sphaleron process in the broken phase, we evaluate the sphaleron rate and order of the electroweak phase transition. In this model, the electroweak phase transition is strongly first order due to the doublet-singlet Higgs mixing. Consequently, for typical parameter sets the $Z'$ boson has to be lighter than (150-300) GeV and thus leptophobic to be consistent with the collider bounds. We also estimate the baryon asymmetry of the uni…
The electroweak contributions to the forward-backward asymmetry in the production of top-quark pairs at the Tevatron are evaluated at O(alpha^2) and O(alpha*alphas^2). We perform a detailed analysis of all partonic channels that produce an asymmetry and combine them with the QCD contributions. They provide a non-negligible fraction of the QCD-induced asymmetry with the same overall sign, thus enlarging the Standard Model prediction and diminishing the observed deviation. For the observed mass-dependent forward-backward asymmetry a 3-sigma deviation still remains at an invariant-mass cut of M_(…
We investigate if the CP violation necessary for successful electroweak baryogenesis may be sourced by the neutrino Yukawa couplings. In particular, we consider an electroweak scale Seesaw realisation with sizeable Yukawas where the new neutrino singlets form (pseudo)-Dirac pairs. We find that flavour effects critically impact the final asymmetry obtained and that, taking them into account, the observed value may be obtained in some regions of the parameter space. This source of CP violation naturally avoids the strong constraints from electric dipole moments and links the origin of the baryon…
We study the scale at which one can generate the lepton asymmetry of the universe which could then get converted to a baryon asymmetry during the electroweak phase transition. We consider the possibility that the Yukawa couplings are small but sufficiently large to generate enough lepton asymmetry. This forbids the possibility of the $(B-L)$ breaking scale being the electroweak scale.
We study the viability of electroweak baryogenesis in a two Higgs doublet model scenario augmented by vector-like, electroweakly interacting fermions. Considering a limited, but illustrative region of the model parameter space, we obtain the observed cosmic baryon asymmetry while satisfying present constraints from the non-observation of the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron and the combined ATLAS and CMS result for the Higgs boson diphoton decay rate. The observation of a non-zero electron EDM in a next generation experiment and/or the observation of an excess (over the S…
Presented at the 1992 Meeting of the DPF, Fermilab. The electroweak phase transition is reviewed in light of some recent developments. Emphasis is on the issue whether the transition is first or second order and its possible role in the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe.
We analyze the quantum transport equations for supersymmetric electroweak baryogenesis including previously neglected bottom and tau Yukawa interactions and show that they imply the presence of a previously unrecognized dependence of the cosmic baryon asymmetry on the spectrum of third generation quark and lepton superpartners. For fixed values of the CP-violating phases in the supersymmetric theory, the baryon asymmetry can vary in both magnitude and sign as a result of the squark and slepton mass dependence. For light, right-handed top and bottom quark superpartners, the baryon number creati…
Baryogenesis at the electroweak phase transition is discussed within the framework of the supersymmetric standard model. Implications of baryon asymmetry for the electric dipole moment of the neutron are also studied.
Electroweak baryogenesis is an interesting theoretical scenario, which demands physics beyond the Standard Model at energy scales of the order of the weak boson masses. It has been recently emphasized that, in the presence of light stops, the electroweak phase transition can be strongly first order, opening the window for electroweak baryogenesis in the MSSM. For the realization of this scenario, the Higgs boson must be light, at the reach of the LEP2 collider. In this article, we compute the baryon asymmetry assuming the presence of non-trivial CP violating phases in the parameters associated…
We analyze the nMSSM with CP violation in the singlet sector. We study the static and dynamical properties of the electroweak phase transition. We conclude that electroweak baryogenesis in this model is generic in the sense that if the present limits on the mass spectrum are applied, no severe additional tuning is required to obtain a strong first-order phase transition and to generate a sufficient baryon asymmetry. For this we determine the shape of the nucleating bubbles, including the profiles of CP-violating phases. The baryon asymmetry is calculated using the advanced transport theory to …
