We consider a homogeneous mixture of bosons and polarized fermions. We find that long-range and attractive fermion-mediated interactions between bosons have dramatic effects on the properties of the bosons. We construct the phase diagram spanned by boson-fermion mass ratio and boson-fermion scattering parameter. It consists of stable region of mixing and unstable region toward phase separation. In stable mixing phase, the collective long-wavelength excitations can either be well-behaved with infinite lifetime or be finite in lifetime suffered from the Landau damping. We examine the effects of the induced interaction on the properties of weakly interacting bosons. It turns out that the induced interaction not only enhances the repulsion between the bosons against collapse but also enhances the stability of the superfluid state by suppressing quantum depletion.
Interactions in an ultracold boson-fermion mixture are often manifested by elastic collisions. In a mixture of a condensed Bose gas (BEC) and spin polarized degenerate Fermi gas (DFG), fermions can mediate spin-spin interactions between bosons, leading to an effective long-range magnetic interaction analogous to Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in solids. We used Ramsey spectroscopy of the hyperfine clock transition in a $^{87}$Rb BEC to measure the interaction mediated by a $^{40}$K DFG. By controlling the bosons density we isolated the effect of mediated interactions from mea…
The coupling of spins to long-wavelength bosonic modes is a prominent means to engineer long-range spin-spin interactions, and has been realized in a variety of platforms, such as atoms in optical cavities and trapped ions. To date, much of the experimental focus has been on the realization of long-range Ising models, but generalizations to other spin models are highly desirable. In this work, we explore a previously unappreciated connection between the realization of an XY model by off-resonant driving of single sideband of boson excitation (i.e.~a single-beam Mølmer-Sørensen scheme) and a bo…
In high energy and condensed matter physics, particle exchange plays an essential role in the understanding of long-range interactions. For example, the exchange of massive bosons leads to the Yukawa potential. Phonon exchange between electrons gives rise to Cooper pairing in superconductors. When a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of Cs is embedded in a degenerate Fermi gas of Li, we show that interspecies interactions can give rise to an effective trapping potential, damping, and attractive boson-boson interactions mediated by fermions. The latter, related to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida …
Collective excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate of hard-core bosons and their mediated interactions: from two-body bound states to mediated superfluidity
We analyze the ground-state entanglement entropy of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with infinite-range interactions. This model describes the low-energy dynamics of ultracold bosons tightly bound to an optical lattice and dispersively coupled to a cavity mode. The competition between onsite repulsion and global cavity-induced interactions leads to a rich phase diagram, which exhibits superfluid, supersolid, and insulating (Mott and checkerboard) phases. We use a slave-boson treatment of harmonic quantum fluctuations around the mean-field solution and calculate the entanglement entropy across …
In the case of structureless bosons, cooled down to low temperatures, the absorption of electromagnetic waves by their Bose-Einstein condensate is usually forbidden due to the momentum and energy conservation laws: the phase velocity of the collective modes of the condensate called bogolons is sufficiently lower than the speed of light. Thus, only the light scattering processes persist. However, the situation might be different in the case of composite bosons or the bosons with an internal structure. Here, we develop a microscopic theory of electromagnetic power absorption by a Bose-Einstein c…
Ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices self-organize into a variety of structural and quantum phases when placed into a single-mode cavity and pumped by a laser. Cavity optomechanical effects induce an atom density modulation at the cavity-mode wave length that competes with the optical lattice arrangement. Simultaneously short-range interactions via particle hopping promote superfluid order, such that a variety of structural and quantum coherent phases can occur. We analyze the emerging phase diagram in two dimensions by means of an extended Bose-Hubbard model using a local mean field ap…
We study a one-dimensional array of bosons with infinite-range interactions mediated by a laser-driven dissipative optical cavity. The cavity-mediated infinite-range interactions open up a new pathway to fermionization, hitherto only known for dipolar bosons due to their long-range interactions. In parameter ranges attainable in state-of-the-art experiments, we systematically compare observables for bosons and fermions with infinite-range interactions. At large enough laser pump power, many observables, including density distributions in real and momentum space, correlation functions, eigenval…
High-finesse optical cavity allows the establishment of long-range interactions between bosons in an optical lattice when most cold atoms experiments are restricted to short-range interactions. Supersolid phases have recently been experimentally observed in such systems. Using both exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Gutzwiller approximation, we study the ground state phase diagrams of a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with infinite-range interactions which describes such experiments. In addition to superfluid and insulating Mott phases, the infinite-range checkerboard interactions in…
We study a mobile quantum impurity, possessing internal rotational degrees of freedom, confined to a ring in the presence of a many-particle bosonic bath. By considering the recently introduced rotating polaron problem, we define the Hamiltonian and examine the energy spectrum. The weak-coupling regime is studied by means of a variational ansatz in the truncated Fock space. The corresponding spectrum indicates that there emerges a coupling between the internal and orbital angular momenta of the impurity as a consequence of the phonon exchange. We interpret the coupling as a phonon-mediated spi…
The well-known Yukawa and Efimov potentials are two different mediated interaction potentials. The first one arises in quantum field theory from the exchange of virtual particles. The second one is mediated by a real particle resonantly interacting with two other particles. This Letter shows how two impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate can exhibit both phenomena. For a weak impurity-boson attractive interactionattraction with the condensate, the two impurities form two polarons that interact through a weak Yukawa attraction mediated by virtual excitations. For a resonant attractio…
We develop a functional integral formulation for binary Bose-Einstein condensates coupled to polarized fermions. We find that spin-dependent fermion-mediated interactions have dramatic effects on the properties of the binary condensates. The quasiparticle spectrum features two branches. The upper branch, which is of density nature, gets modified by the induced interactions, while the lower branch, which is of spin nature, is left intact. The ground-state phase diagram consists of stable region of miscible phases and unstable region toward phase separation. In the stable region, it is further c…

Impurities immersed into a surrounding ultra-cold Bose gas experience interactions mediated by the surrounding many-body environment. If one focuses on two impurities that are sufficiently close to each other, they can form a bipolaron pair. Here, we discuss how the standard methods based on linearizing the condensate field lead to results only valid in the weak coupling regime and for sufficiently large impurity separations. We show how those shortcomings can be remedied within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation by accounting for boson-boson interactions already on the mean-field level.
Motivated by a recent experiment, we study the dynamics of bosons in a disordered optical lattice, interacting with a variably sized bath of disorder free atoms. As the number of particles in the bath is increased, there is a transition between "localized" and "ergodic" behavior, which are characterized by the long-time behavior of an initial density wave. We model the dynamics with a stochastic mean field theory, reproducing the central observations of the experiment. A key conclusion from our study is that particle loss plays an important role.
Multimode optical cavities can be used to implement interatomic interactions which are highly tunable in strength and range. For bosonic atoms trapped in an optical lattice, cavity-mediated interactions compete with the short-range interatomic repulsion, which we study using an extended Bose-Hubbard model. Already in a single-mode cavity, where the corresponding interaction has an infinite range, a rich phase diagram has been experimentally observed, featuring density-wave and supersolid self-organized phases in addition to the usual superfluid and Mott insulator. Here we show that, for any fi…
We consider a model of a light-matter system, in which a system of fermions (or bosons) is coupled to a photonic mode that drives a phase transitions in the matter degrees of freedom. Starting from a simplified analytical model, we show that the entanglement between light and matter vanishes at small and large coupling strength, and shows a peak in the proximity of the transition. We perform numerical simulations for a specific model (relevant to both solid state and cold atom platforms), and show that the entanglement displays critical behavior at the transition, and features maximum suscepti…
We study two identical fermions, or two hard-core bosons, in an infinite chain and coupled to phonons by interactions that modulate their hopping as described by the Peierls/Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We show that exchange of phonons generates effective nearest-neighbor repulsion between particles and also gives rise to interactions that move the pair as a whole. The two-polaron phase diagram exhibits two sharp transitions, leading to light dimers at strong coupling and the flattening of the dimer dispersion at some critical values of the parameters. This dimer (quasi)self-trapping occu…
We investigate the mechanical instability toward density collapse and the transition temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation in the weakly coupled boson-fermion many-body mixture of single-component boson and fermion gases, in the case of the repulsive boson-boson and attractive boson-fermion interactions; no fermion-fermion interaction is assumed due to the Pauli exclusion because of the diluteness of the mixture. The mechanical instability occurs in the part of bosonic gas in the case where the induced boson-boson attraction mediated by the fermion polarization overcomes the boson-boson re…
