In this work, we analyze the corrections obtained on a homogeneous one-dimensional Bose gas within the high densities limit by means of the polymer quantization scheme. Thus, starting from the Bogoliubov formalism, we analyze the ground expectation value of the polymer momentum operator in terms of semiclassical states, in order to obtain an analytic expression for the ground state energy of the N-body system, which allows us to solve the pathological behavior commonly associated with the one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation through the introduction of finite size effects characterized by the contribution of the polymer corrections. We also discuss the speed of sound in our polymer version of the Bose gas and the corresponding relative shift induced by the introduction of a minimum length parameter. Finally, by considering the idea that the Bose-Einstein condensation phenomenon is closely related to that of superfluidity, we investigate the emergent superfluid behavior in our polymer model by implementing an appropriate Landau's criterion. In this case, we are able to consequently analyze the changes in the critical velocity which defines the limit between the superfluid-condensate regions, thus deducing that the polymer length acts as a kind of pseudo-potential which induces a dissipationless flow associated with the superfluid phase even in the absence of self-interactions.
A rather non-standard quantum representation of the canonical commutation relations of quantum mechanics systems, known as the polymer representation has gained some attention in recent years, due to its possible relation with Planck scale physics. In particular, this approach has been followed in a symmetric sector of loop quantum gravity known as loop quantum cosmology. Here we explore different aspects of the relation between the ordinary Schroedinger theory and the polymer description. The paper has two parts. In the first one, we derive the polymer quantum mechanics starting from the ordi…
The existence of a minimal measurable length as a characteristic length in the Planck scale is one of the main features of quantum gravity and has been widely explored in the context. Various different deformations of spacetime have been employed successfully for the purpose. However, polymer quantization approach is a relatively new and dynamic field towards the quantum gravity phenomenology, which emerges from the symmetric sector of the loop quantum gravity. In this article, we extend the standard ideas of polymer quantization to find a new and tighter bound on the polymer deformation param…
In this paper we provide the representation of the symplectic group $Sp(2n, \mathbb{R})$ in polymer quantum mechanics. We derive the propagator of the polymer free particle and the polymer harmonic oscillator without considering a polymer scale. The polymer scale is then introduced to reconcile our results with those expressions for the polymer free particle. The propagator for the polymer harmonic oscillator implies non-unitary evolution.
In Polymer Quantum Mechanics, a quantization scheme that naturally emerges from Loop Quantum Gravity, position and momentum operators cannot be both well-defined on the Hilbert space ( H_Poly ). It is henceforth deemed impossible to define standard creation and annihilation operators. In this letter we show that a q-oscillator structure, and hence q-deformed creation/annihilation operators, can be naturally defined on H_Poly , which is then mapped into the sum of many copies of the q-oscillator Hilbert space. This shows that the q-calculus is a natural calculus for Polymer Quantum Mechanics. M…
Polymer quantization was discovered during the construction of Loop Quantum Cosmology. For the simplest quantum theory of one degree of freedom, the implications for dynamics were studied for the harmonic oscillator as well as some other potentials. For more degrees of freedom, the possibility of continuous, kinematic symmetries arises. While these are realised on the Hilbert space of polymer quantum mechanics, their infinitesimal versions are not supported. For an invariant Hamiltonian, these symmetry realizations imply infinite degeneracy suggesting that the symmetry should be spontaneously …
The Strong equivalence Principle (SEP) states that the description of a physical system in a gravitational field is indistinguishable from the description of the same system at rest in an accelerating frame. While this statement holds true in both General Relativity and ordinary Quantum Mechanics, one expects it to fail when quantum gravity corrections are taken into account. In this paper we investigate the possible failure of the SEP in two Quantum Gravity inspired modifications of Quantum Mechanics - Polymer Quantum Mechanics and deformed Heisenberg Algebra. We find that the SEP fails to ho…
It is shown how states of a quantum mechanical particle in the Schroedinger representation can be approximated by states in the so-called polymer representation. The result may shed some light on the semiclassical limit of loop quantum gravity.
At densities below the neutron drip threshold, a purely elastic solid model (including, if necessary, a frozen-in magnetic field) can provide an adequate description of a neutron star crust, but at higher densities it will be necessary to allow for the penetration of the solid lattice by an independently moving current of superfluid neutrons. In order to do this, the previously available category of relativistic elasticity models is combined here with a separately developed category of relativistic superfluidity models in a unified treatment based on the use of an appropriate Lagrangian master…
Flow past a line vortex in a simple perfect fluid or superfluid gives rise to a transverse Magnus force that is given by the well known Joukowski lift formula. The problem of generalising this to multiconstituent superfluid models has been controversial since it was originally posed by the work of Iordanski in the context of the Landau 2-constituent model for He-4 at finite temperature. The present work deals not just with this particular case but with the generic category of perfect multiconstituent models including the kind proposed for a mixture of He-4 and He-3 by Andreev and Bashkin. It i…
In this paper, we show the relation between $sp(4,\mathbb{R})$, the Lie algebra of the symplectic group, and the elements of $Sp(4,\mathbb{R})$. We use this result to obtain some special cases of symplectic matrices relevant to the study of squeezed states. In this regard, we provide some applications in quantum mechanics and analyze the squeezed polymer states obtained from the polymer representation of the symplectic group. Remarkably, the polymer's dispersions are the same as those obtained for the squeezed states in the usual representation.
We analyze the polymer representation of quantum mechanics within the deformation quantization formalism. In particular, we construct the Wigner function and the star-product for the polymer representation as a distributional limit of the Schrödinger representation for the Weyl algebra in a Gaussian weighted measure, and we observe that the quasi-probability distribution limit of this Schrödinger representation agrees with the Wigner function for Loop Quantum Cosmology. Further, the introduced polymer star-product fulfills Bohr's correspondence principle even though not all the operators are w…
In this paper, a version of polymer quantum mechanics, which is inspired by loop quantum gravity, is considered and shown to be equivalent, in a precise sense, to the standard, experimentally tested, Schroedinger quantum mechanics. The kinematical cornerstone of our framework is the so called polymer representation of the Heisenberg-Weyl (H-W) algebra, which is the starting point of the construction. The dynamics is constructed as a continuum limit of effective theories characterized by a scale, and requires a renormalization of the inner product. The result is a physical Hilbert space in whic…
Polymer Quantum Mechanics is based on some of the techniques used in the loop quantization of gravity that are adapted to describe systems possessing a finite number of degrees of freedom. It has been used in two ways: on one hand it has been used to represent some aspects of the loop quantization in a simpler context, and, on the other, it has been applied to each of the infinite mechanical modes of other systems. Indeed, this polymer approach was recently implemented for the free scalar field propagator. In this work we compute the polymer propagators of the free particle and a particle in a…
We analize the Berry-Keating model and the Sierra and Rodríguez-Laguna Hamiltonian within the polymeric quantization formalism. By using the polymer representation, we obtain for both models, the associated polymeric quantum Hamiltonians and the corresponding stationary wave functions. The self-adjointness condition provide a proper domain for the Hamiltonian operator and the energy spectrum, which turned out to be dependent on an introduced scale parameter. By performing a counting of semiclassical states, we prove that the polymer representation reproduces the smooth part of the Riemann-von …
Quantum aspects of black holes represent an important testing ground for a theory of quantum gravity. The recent success of string theory in reproducing the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy formula provides a link between general relativity and quantum mechanics via thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Here we speculate on the existence of new and unexpected links between black holes and polymers and other soft-matter systems.
We derive a quantum master equation in the context of a polymerized open quantum mechanical system for the scattering of a Brownian particle in an ideal gas environment. The model is formulated in a top-down approach by choosing a Hamiltonian with a coupling between the system and environment that is generally associated with spatial decoherence. We extend the existing work on such models by using a non-standard representation of the canonical commutation relations, inspired by the quantization procedure applied in loop quantum gravity, which yields a model in which position operators are repl…
In this work we study a completely degenerated fermion gas at zero temperature within a semiclassical approximation for the Hamiltonian arising in polymer quantum mechanics. Polymer quantum systems are quantum mechanical models quantized in a similar way as in loop quantum gravity that allow the study of the discreteness of space and other features of the loop quantization in a simplified way. We obtain the polymer modified thermodynamical properties noticing that the corresponding Fermi energy is exactly the same as if one directly polymerizes the momentum $p_F$. We also obtain the correspond…
Polymer quantization is a non-standard representation of the quantum mechanics that inspired by loop quantum gravity. To study the associated statistical mechanics, one needs to find microstates' energies which are eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian operator in the polymer framework. But, this is not an easy task at all since the Hamiltonian takes a nonlinear form in polymer picture. In this paper, we introduce a semiclassical method in which it is not necessary to solve the eigenvalue problem. Instead, we work with the classical Hamiltonian function and the deformed density of states in the polym…
In this Letter we study the effects of the Modified Uncertainty Principle as proposed in Ali et al. (2009) [5] in simple quantum mechanical systems and study its thermodynamic properties. We have assumed that the quantum particles follow Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics with no spin. We compare our results with the results found in the GUP and polymer quantum mechanical frameworks. Interestingly we find that the corrected thermodynamic entities are exactly same compared to the polymer results but the length scale considered has a theoretically different origin. Hence we express the need of further…
We provide a re-analysis of the $5D$ Kaluza-Klein theory by implementing the polymer representation of the dynamics, both on a classical and a quantum level, in order to introduce in the model information about the existence of a cut-off scale. We start by showing that, in the framework of semi-classical quantum mechanics, the $5D$ Bianchi I model admits a solution in which three space directions expand isotropically, while the remaining one is static, offering in this way a very valuable scenario to implement a Kaluza-Klein paradigm, identifying in such a static dimension the compactified one…
