Dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters have long played a role in galaxy cluster studies because it is thought their properties can be reconstructed more precisely and with less systematics. As relaxed clusters are desirable, there exist a plethora of criteria for classifying a galaxy cluster as relaxed. In this work, we examine $9$ commonly used observational and theoretical morphological metrics extracted from $54,000$ Mock-X synthetic X-ray images of galaxy clusters taken from the IllustrisTNG, BAHAMAS and MACSIS simulation suites. We find that the simulated criteria distributions are in reasonable agreement with the observed distributions. Many criteria distributions evolve as a function of redshift, cluster mass, numerical resolution and subgrid physics, limiting the effectiveness of a single relaxation threshold value. All criteria are positively correlated with each other, however, the strength of the correlation is sensitive to redshift, mass and numerical choices. Driven by the intrinsic scatter inherent to all morphological metrics and the arbitrary nature of relaxation threshold values, we find the consistency of relaxed subsets defined by the different metrics to be relatively poor. Therefore, the use of relaxed cluster subsets introduces significant selection effects that are non-trivial to resolve.
We present a machine learning approach for estimating galaxy cluster masses, trained using both Chandra and eROSITA mock X-ray observations of 2,041 clusters from the Magneticum simulations. We train a random forest regressor, an ensemble learning method based on decision tree regression, to predict cluster masses using an input feature set. The feature set uses core-excised X-ray luminosity and a variety of morphological parameters, including surface brightness concentration, smoothness, asymmetry, power ratios, and ellipticity. The regressor is cross-validated and calibrated on a training sa…
Several methods are used to evaluate, from observational data, the dynamical state of galaxy clusters. Among them, the morphological analysis of cluster images is well suited for this purpose. We report a new approach to the morphology, which consists in analytically modelling the images with a set of orthogonal functions, the Zernike polynomials (ZPs). We validated the method on mock high-resolution Compton parameter maps of synthetic galaxy clusters from THE THREE HUNDRED project. To classify the maps for their morphology we defined a single parameter, $\mathcal{C}$, by combining the contrib…
The galaxy luminosity function and galaxy stellar mass function are fundamental statistics in the testing of galaxy formation models. Theoretical predictions based on cosmological simulations can deviate from observations, especially at the bright and faint ends. In this case, the mismatch may come from missing physics, oversimplified or inaccurate model recipes, or inappropriate methods of extracting basic astrophysical quantities from simulations. The latter is a crucial aspect to consider to avoid misleading conclusions when comparing simulations with observations. In this paper, we have ap…

The study of the evolution of the morphological distribution of galaxies in different environments can provide important information about the effects of the environment and the physical mechanisms responsible for the morphological transformations. As part of a complete analysis of the young cluster RXJ1257+4738 at z$\sim$0.9, we studied in this work the morphological properties of its galaxies. We used non-parametric methods of morphological classification, as implemented in the galSVM code. The classification with the applied method was possible even using ground-based observations: r'-band …
We study projected underdensities in the cosmic galaxy density field known as 'troughs', and their overdense counterparts, which we call 'ridges'. We identify these regions using a bright sample of foreground galaxies from the photometric Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), specifically selected to mimic the spectroscopic Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA). Using background galaxies from KiDS, we measure the weak gravitational lensing profiles of the troughs/ridges. We quantify the amplitude of their lensing strength $A$ as a function of galaxy density percentile rank $P$ and galaxy overdensity $δ$…
We calculated morphological parameters for 70821 galaxies from VIPERS (spectroscopic galaxy survey performed on VIMOS spectroscope at VLT). These parameters includes Gini, M20, Concentration, Asymmetry and Smoothness. Results correlate with the distribution of these parameters for other simulated and observed samples. We also studied dependence of these parameters with Sersic power index of radial distribution of surface brightness of galaxy image. Our aim was to find a clear separation of VIPERS galaxies on elliptical and spiral. This is necessary for testing the method of Sersic index (ns) c…
We study the connection between morphology and dynamical state of the simulated galaxy clusters in $z\in[0,1.031]$ from THE THREE HUNDRED Project. We quantify cluster dynamical state using a combination of dynamical indicators from theoretical measures and compare this combined parameter, $χ$, with the results from morphological classifications. The dynamical state of the cluster sample shows a continuous distribution from dynamically relaxed, more abundant at lower redshift, to hybrid and disturbed. The dynamical state presents a clear dependence on the radius, with internal regions more rela…
It is known that the large-scale structure (LSS) mapped by a galaxy redshift survey is subject to distortions by galaxies' peculiar velocities. Besides the signatures generated in common N-point statistics, such as the anisotropy in the galaxy 2-point correlation function, the peculiar velocities also induce distinct features in LSS's morphological properties, which are fully described by four Minkowski functionals (MFs), i.e., the volume, surface area, integrated mean curvature and Euler characteristic (or genus). In this work, by using large suite of N-body simulations, we present and analyz…
Understanding the cluster population of clusters of galaxies is of the utmost importance for using cluster samples in both astrophysical and cosmological studies. We present an in-depth analysis of the X-ray morphological parameters of the galaxy clusters and groups detected in the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS). We study the eROSITA X-ray imaging data for a sample of 325 clusters and groups that are significantly detected in the eFEDS field. We characterize their dynamical properties by measuring a number of dynamical estimators: concentration, central density, cuspiness, ellip…
We use an information theoretic framework to analyze data from the Galaxy Zoo 2 project and study if there are any statistically significant correlations between the presence of bars in spiral galaxies and their environment. We measure the mutual information between the barredness of galaxies and their environments in a volume limited sample ($M_r \leq -21$) and compare it with the same in datasets where (i) the bar/unbar classifications are randomized and (ii) the spatial distribution of galaxies are shuffled on different length scales. We assess the statistical significance of the difference…
It is proposed to use exact, cosmologically relevant solutions to Einstein's equations to accurately quantify the precision of ray tracing techniques through Newtonian N-body simulations. As an initial example of such a study, the recipe in (Green & Wald, 2012) for going between N-body results and a perturbed FLRW metric in the Newtonian gauge is used to study light propagation through quasi-spherical Szekeres models. The study is conducted by deriving a set of ODEs giving an expression for the angular diameter distance in the Newtonian gauge metric. The accuracy of the results obtained from t…
This is the first in a series of papers studying the astrophysics and cosmology of massive, dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters. Here we present a new, automated method for identifying relaxed clusters based on their morphologies in X-ray imaging data. While broadly similar to others in the literature, the morphological quantities that we measure are specifically designed to provide a fair basis for comparison across a range of data quality and cluster redshifts, to be robust against missing data due to point-source masks and gaps between detectors, and to avoid strong assumptions about the co…
Studying the properties of galaxy cluster morphology estimators
We study the effect of two Modified Gravity (MG) theories, $f(R)$ and nDGP, on three probes of large-scale structure, the real space power spectrum estimator $Q_0$, bispectrum and voids, and validate fast approximate COLA simulations against full $N$-body simulations for the prediction of these probes. We find that using the first three even multipoles of the redshift space power spectrum to estimate $Q_0$ is enough to reproduce the MG boost factors of the real space power spectrum for both halo and galaxy catalogues. By analysing the bispectrum and reduced bispectrum of Dark Matter (DM), we s…
