A diamond anvil cell (DAC) which can generate extremely high pressure of multi-megabar is promising tool to develop a further physics such a high-transition temperature superconductivity. However, electrical transport measurements, which is one of the most important properties of such functional materials, using the DAC is quite difficult because the sample space is very small and a deformation of electrodes under extreme condition. In this study, we fabricated a boron-doped diamond micro-electrode and an undoped diamond insulation on a beveled culet surface of the diamond anvil. By using the developed DAC, we demonstrated the electrical transport measurements for sulfur hydride H$_2$S which known as a pressure-induced high-transition temperature superconducting H$_3$S at high pressure. The measurements were successfully conducted under high pressure up to 192 GPa, and then a multi-step superconducting transition composed from pure sulfur and some kinds of surfer hydrides, which is possible HS$_2$, was observed with zero resistance.
We describe an experimental platform that generates infrared images of micrometer-sized samples in the high pressure region of a diamond anvil cell. Using a 2.3 micron laser as a source of radiation, the system will be particularly useful in identifying hydride superconductors which exhibit an anomalous temperature dependence of reflectivity in the 2.3 micron region. Our system shows an intensity stability within one percent when the sample temperature is swept from 100 K to 300 K. The spatial stability is of the order of a few micrometers in the same temperature range.
Binary hydrides formed by the pnictogens of phosphorus, arsenic and antimony are studied at high pressures using first principles methods. Stable structures are predicted and their electronic, vibrational and superconducting properties are investigated. We predict that SbH$_{4}$ and AsH$_{8}$ will be high-temperature superconductors at megabar pressures, with critical temperatures in excess of 100 K. The highly symmetric hexagonal SbH$_{4}$ phase is predicted to be stabilized above about 150 GPa, which is readily achievable in diamond anvil cell experiments. We find that all phosphorus hydride…
We report the ac magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistance, and X-ray diffraction measurements of platinum hydride (PtHx) in diamond anvil cells, which reveal its superconducting transition. At 32 GPa, when PtHx is in a P63/mmc structure, PtHx exhibits superconducting transition at 6.7 K and superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases with pressure to 4.8 K at 36 GPa. The observed T c is higher than that of powdered Pt by more than three orders of magnitude. It is suggested that hydrides of noble metals have higher Tc than the elements.
The computational and experimental exploration of the phase diagrams of binary hydrides under high pressure has uncovered phases with novel stoichiometries and structures, some which are superconducting at quite high temperatures. Herein we review the plethora of studies that have been undertaken in the last decade on the main group and transition metal hydrides, as well as a few of the rare earth hydrides at pressures attainable in diamond anvil cells. The aggregate of data shows that the propensity for superconductivity is dependent upon the species used to "dope" hydrogen, with some of the …
Motivated by the recent claim of hot superconductivity with critical temperatures up to 550 K in La + x hydrides (arXiv:2006.03004), we investigate the high-pressure phase diagram of possible compounds that may have formed in the experiment, using first-principles calculations for evolutionary crystal structure prediction and superconductivity. Starting from the hypothesis that the observed T$_c$ may be realized by successive heating upon a pre-formed LaH$_{10}$ phase, we examine plausible ternaries of lanthanum, hydrogen and other elements present in the diamond anvil cell: boron, nitrogen, c…
The phenomenon of high temperature superconductivity, approaching room temperature, has been realized in a number of hydrogen-dominant alloy systems under high pressure conditions1-12. A significant discovery in reaching room temperature superconductivity is the photo-induced reaction of sulfur, hydrogen, and carbon that initially forms of van der Waals solids at sub-megabar pressures. Carbonaceous sulfur hydride has been demonstrated to be tunable with respect to carbon content, leading to different superconducting final states with different structural symmetries. A modulated AC susceptibili…
Searching for superconductivity with Tc near room temperature is of great interest both for fundamental science & many potential applications. Here we report the experimental discovery of superconductivity with maximum critical temperature (Tc) above 210 K in calcium superhydrides, the new alkali earth hydrides experimentally showing superconductivity above 200 K in addition to sulfur hydride & rare-earth hydride system. The materials are synthesized at the synergetic conditions of 160~190 GPa and ~2000 K using diamond anvil cell combined with in-situ laser heating technique. The superconducti…
The theoretical exploration of the phase diagrams of binary hydrides under pressure using \emph{ab initio} crystal structure prediction techniques coupled with first-principles calculations has led to the \emph{in silico} discovery of numerous novel superconducting materials. This Perspective article focuses on the alkaline earth and rare earth polyhydrides whose superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$, was predicted to be above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. After providing a brief overview of the computational protocol used to predict the structures of stable and metastable hydrid…
We investigate the superconducting ternary lithium borohydride phase diagram at pressures of 0 and 200$\,$GPa using methods for evolutionary crystal structure prediction and linear-response calculations for the electron-phonon coupling. Our calculations show that the ground state phase at ambient pressure, LiBH$_4$, stays in the $Pnma$ space group and remains a wide band-gap insulator at all pressures investigated. Other phases along the 1:1:$x$ Li:B:H line are also insulating. However, a full search of the ternary phase diagram at 200$\,$GPa revealed a metallic Li$_2$BH$_6$ phase, which is th…
Evolutionary algorithms (EA) coupled with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have been used to predict the most stable hydrides of phosphorous (PHn, n = 1-6) at 100, 150 and 200 GPa. At these pressures phosphine is unstable with respect to decomposition into the elemental phases, as well as PH2 and H2. Three metallic PH2 phases were found to be dynamically stable and superconducting between 100-200 GPa. One of these contains five formula units in the primitive cell and has C2/m symmetry (5FU-C2/m). It is comprised of 1D periodic PH3-PH-PH2-PH-PH3 oligomers. Two structurally related p…
