Analytic Gradients and Derivative Couplings for Configuration Interaction with All Single Excitations and One Double Excitation -- En Route to Nonadiabatic Dynamics
We present analytic gradients and derivative couplings for the simplest possible multireference configuration interaction method, CIS-1D, an electronic structure ansatz that includes all single excitations and one lone double excitation on top of a Hartree-Fock reference state. We show that the resulting equations are numerically stable and require the evaluation of a similar number of integrals as compared to standard CIS theory; one can easily differentiate the required frontier orbitals ($\mathtt{h}$ and $\mathtt{l}$) with minimal cost. The resulting algorithm has been implemented within the Q-Chem electronic structure package and should be immediately useful for understanding photochemistry with $S_{0}$-$S_{1}$ crossings.
We have developed a numerical differentiation scheme which eliminates evaluation of overlap determinants in calculating the time-derivative non-adiabatic couplings (TDNACs). Evaluation of these determinants was the bottleneck in previous implementations of mixed quantum-classical methods using numerical differentiation of electronic wave functions in the Slater-determinant representation. The central idea of our approach is, first, to reduce the analytic time derivatives of Slater determinants to time derivatives of molecular orbitals, and then to apply a finite-difference formula. Benchmark c…
We propose a systematic approach to the basis set extension for nonadiabatic dynamics of entangled combination of nuclear coherent states (CSs) evolving according to the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP). TDVP provides a rigorous framework for fully quantum nonadiabatic dynamics of closed systems, however, quality of results strongly depends on available basis functions. Starting with a single nuclear CS replicated vertically on all electronic states, our approach clones this function when replicas of the CS on different electronic states experience increasingly different forces. In order to study electron-transfer mediated chemical processes on a metal surface, one requires not one but two potential energy surfaces (one ground state and one excited state) as in Marcus theory. In this letter, we report that a novel, dynamically-weighted, state-averaged constrained CASSCF(2,2) (DW-SA-cCASSCF(2,2)) can produce such surfaces for the Anderson Impurity model. Both ground and excited state potentials are smooth, they incorporate states with a charge transfer character, and the accuracy of the ground state surface can be verified for some model problems by renormalization gro…

Nonadiabatic effects in chemical reaction at metal surfaces, due to excitation of electron-hole pairs, stand at the frontier of the studies of gas-surface reaction dynamics. However, the first principles description of electronic excitation remains challenging. In an efficient molecular dynamics with electronic friction (MDEF) method, the nonadiabatic couplings are effectively included in a so-called electronic friction tensor (EFT), which can be computed from first-order time-dependent perturbation theory (TDPT) in terms of density functional theory (DFT) orbitals. This second-rank tensor dep…

In recent years, deep learning has become a part of our everyday life and is revolutionizing quantum chemistry as well. In this work, we show how deep learning can be used to advance the research field of photochemistry by learning all important properties for photodynamics simulations. The properties are multiple energies, forces, nonadiabatic couplings and spin-orbit couplings. The nonadiabatic couplings are learned in a phase-free manner as derivatives of a virtually constructed property by the deep learning model, which guarantees rotational covariance. Additionally, an approximation for n…

We carried out extensive studies to examine the performance of the fewest-switches surface hopping method in the description of the ultrafast intersystem crossing dynamic of various singlet-triplet (S-T) models by comparison with the results of the exact full quantum dynamics. Different implementation details and some derivative approaches were examined. As expected, it is better to perform the trajectory surface hopping calculations in the spin-adiabatic representation or by the local diabatization approach, instead of in the spin-diabatic representation. The surface hopping method provides r…
