Nodal chain is a typical topological phase in nodal line semimetals. Here, we propose a new topological phase -- interlocking nodal chains, in which two sets of nodal chains are interlocked each other. It includes one- (1D), two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) versions, which can be produced by a three-band model. The 2D and 3D interlocking nodal chains will evolve into some other phases, such as double concentric isolated (or intersecting) nodal rings, coexisting nodal chain and isolated (or intersecting) nodal rings. These phases exhibit diverse surface states and Landau levels, which implies that there are rich electronic and magnetic properties associating with them. Moreover, the 2D interlocking nodal chains and related phase transitions can be realized in a series of carbon networks under strain. Without strain, topological phase in the carbon structures is double concentric isolated nodal rings. A larger tensile strain leads to the phase transiting to an interlocking nodal chain, while the middle phase is a coexisting phase of a nodal chain and isolated nodal rings. In addition, stability and synthesis of the carbon networks are discussed.
While molecular machines play an increasingly significant role in nanoscience research and applications, there remains a shortage of investigations and understanding of the molecular gear (cogwheel), which is an indispensable and fundamental component to drive a larger correlated molecular machine system. Employing ab initio calculations, we investigate model systems consisting of molecules adsorbed on metal or graphene surfaces, ranging from very simple triple-arm gears such as PF3 and NH3 to larger multi-arm gears based on carbon rings. We explore in detail the transmission of slow rotationa…
A structurally stable carbon allotrope with plentiful topological properties is predicted by means of first-principles calculations. This novel carbon allotrope possesses the simple space group C2/m, and contains simultaneously sp, sp2 and sp3 hybridized bonds in one structure, which is thus coined as carboneyane. The calculations on geometrical, vibrational, and electronic properties reveal that carboneyane, with good ductility and a much lower density 1.43 g/cm3, is a topological metal with a pair of nodal lines traversing the whole Brillouin zone, such that they can only be annihilated in a…
Topological nodal rings can be classified into three types according to the slopes in their energy dispersion. The first two are made of type-I and II nodal points, respectively, while the third is made of both. In carbon networks, all three types can exist. Under strain, phase transitions from a topological metal to a semiconductor, take place, and at the transition points, these nodal rings shrink into type-I, II, and III semi-Dirac points. These topological features exhibit diverse electron-hole pocket patterns and Landau levels, which give rise to exotic transport properties.
Carbon nitride compounds have emerged recently as a prominent member of 2D materials beyond graphene. The experimental realizations of 2D graphitic carbon nitride g-C$_3$N$_4$, nitrogenated holey grahpene C$_2$N, polyaniline C$_3$N have shown their promising potential in energy and environmental applications. In this work, we predict a new type of carbon nitride network with a C$_9$N$_4$ stoichiometry from first principle calculations. Unlike common C-N compounds and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are typically insulating, surprisingly C$_9$N$_4$ is found to be a 2D nodal-line semim…
Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials play an important role in nanomaterials. We propose a new carbon monolayer, named hexagonal-4,4,4-graphyne (H4,4,4-graphyne), which is a nanoporous structure composed of rectangular carbon rings and triple bonds of carbon. Using first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the structure, stability, and band structure of this new material. We found that its energy is much lower than that of some experimental carbon materials and it is stable at least up to 1500 K. In contrast to the single Dirac point band structure of other 2D carbon monolayers…
Carbon, a basic versatile element in our universe, exhibits rich varieties of allotropic phases, most of which possess promising nontrivial topological fermions. In this work, we identify a distinct topological phonon phase in a realistic carbon allotrope with a body-centered cubic structure, termed bcc-C$_{8}$. We show by symmetry arguments and effective model analysis that there are three intersecting phonon nodal rings perpendicular to each other in different planes. The intersecting phonon nodal rings are protected by time-reversal and inversion symmetries, which quantize the corresponding…
Nexus metals represent a new type of topological material in which nodal lines merge at nexus points. Here, we propose novel networks in nexus systems through intertwining between nexus fermions and additional nodal lines. These nexus networks can be realized in several recently synthesized carbon honeycomb materials. In these carbon honeycombs, we demonstrate a phase transition between a nexus network and a system with triply-degenerate points and additional nodal lines. The Landau level spectra show unusual magnetic transport properties in the nexus networks. Our results pave the way toward …
The topological metal states in electronic systems have been extensively studied, but topological phonons were explored only in few examples so far. Here, we expose for the first time that the topological nodal gimbal phonons, type-I and type-II Weyl phonons are simultaneously present in T-carbon, a recently realized new allotrope of carbon. At about 15.2 THz, we find that there exist three mutually intersecting nodal loops (named as nodal gimbal phonons) around Γ point, and two pairs of type-I Weyl phonons on the boundary of Brillouin zone around each X point. In addition, there exist three p…
The interplay between light and matter attracts tremendous interest for exploring novel topological quantum states and their phase transitions. Here we show by first-principles calculations and the Floquet theorem that a carbon allotrope bct-C$_{16}$, a typical nodal-line semimetal, exhibits exotic photoinduced Floquet mixed-Weyl semimetallic features. Under the irradiation of a linearly polarized light, bct-C$_{16}$ undergos a topological phase transition from a Driac nodal-line semimetal to a Weyl semimetal with two pairs of tunable Weyl points. With increasing the light intensity, left-hand…
Topological metal/semimetals (TMs) have emerged as a new frontier in the field of quantum materials. A few two-dimensional (2D) boron sheets have been suggested as Dirac materials, however, to date TMs made of three-dimensional (3D) boron structures have not been found. Herein, by means of systematic first principles computations, we discovered that a rather stable 3D boron allotrope, namely 3D-alpha' boron, is a nodal-chain semimetal. In the momentum space, six nodal lines and rings contact each other and form a novel spindle nodal chain. This 3D-alpha' boron can be formed by stacking 2D wigg…
The transition between gapped (semiconducting) and gapless (metallic) phases and tunability of bandgap in materials is a very lucrative yet considerably challenging goal for new-age device preparation. For bulk materials and for two-dimensional layered systems, this is a rapidly expanding field. We theoretically propose a one-dimensional pure carbon material with a tunable bandgap. We find that two parallel coupled polyyne chains show metallic behaviour with bands crossing on the Fermi level, unlike the single semiconducting chain. The number of nodal points (two) is robust under transverse an…
Searching for three-dimensional(3D) semiconducting carbon allotropes with proper bandgaps and excellent optoelectronic properties is always the chasing goal for the new emerging all-carbon optoelectronics. On the other side, 3D carbon materials have also been recognized as promising anode materials superior to commercialized graphite in Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, using first-principles calculations, we propose two novel 3D carbon allotropes through acetylenic linkages modification of two structurally intimately correlated 3D carbon structures - carbon kagome lattice(CKL)and interpenetrated…

A series of carbon allotropes with novel optoelectronic and rich topological properties is predicted by systematic first-principles calculations. These fascinating carbon allotropes can be derived by inserting acetylenic linkages (-C$\equiv$C-) into graphite, hence they are termed as grapheaynes. Grapheaynes possess two different space groups, $P$2/$m$ or $C$2/$m$, and contain simultaneously the $sp$, $sp^2$, and $sp^3$ chemical bonds. They have formation energies lower than the already experimentally synthesized graphdiyne and other theoretically predicted carbon allotropes with acetylenic li…
We predict a new three-dimensional (3D) boron allotrope based on systematic first-principles electronic structure calculations. This allotrope can be derived by substituting each carbon atom in a hexagonal diamond lattice with a B$_{4}$ tetrahedron and possesses the same space group $P6_{3}/mmc$ as hexagonal diamond, hence it is termed as H-boron. We show that H-boron has good stability and excellent mechanical property. Remarkably, we find that H-boron is a topological metal with rich types of spin-orbit-free emergent fermions, including semi-Dirac fermion, quadratic and linear triple-point f…
Using evolutionary algorithm for crystal structure prediction, we present a new stable two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope composed of polymerized as-indacenes (PAI) in a zigzag pattern, namely PAI-graphene whose energy is lower than most of the reported 2D allotropes of graphene. Crucially, the crystal structure realizes a nonsymmorphic layer group that enforces a nontrivial global topology of the band structure with two Dirac cones lying perfectly at the Fermi level. The absence of electron/hole pockets makes PAI-graphene a pristine crystalline topological semimetal having anisotropic Ferm…
To efficiently integrate cutting-edge terahertz technology into compact devices, the highly confined terahertz plasmons are attracting intensive attentions. Compared to plasmons at visible frequencies in metals, terahertz plasmons, typically in lightly doped semiconductors or graphene, are sensitive to carrier density (n) and thus have an easy tunability, which, however, leads to unstable or imprecise terahertz spectra. By deriving a simplified but universal form of plasmon frequencies, here we reveal a unified mechanism for generating unusual n-independent plasmons (DIPs) in all topological s…
