This paper has two messages. First, we demonstrate that neural networks that process noisy data can learn to exploit, when available, access to auxiliary noise that is correlated with the noise on the data. In effect, the network learns to use the correlated auxiliary noise as an approximate key to decipher its noisy input data. Second, we show that, for this task, the scaling behavior with increasing noise is such that future quantum machines could possess an advantage. In particular, decoherence generates correlated auxiliary noise in the environment. The new approach could, therefore, help enable future quantum machines by providing machine-learned quantum error correction.
In realistic metrology, entangled probes are more sensitive to noise, especially for a correlated environment. The precision of parameter estimation with entangled probes is even lower than that of the unentangled ones in a correlated environment. In this paper, we propose a measurement scheme with only one auxiliary qubit, which can selectively offset the impact of environmental noise under this situation. We analyse the estimation precision of our scheme and find out that it approaches the Heisenberg limit when prepared in a proper auxiliary state. We further discuss employing auxiliary stat…
We present a numerical method for the study of correlated quantum impurity problems out of equilibrium, which is particularly suited to address steady state properties within Dynamical Mean Field Theory. The approach, recently introduced in [Arrigoni et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 086403 (2013)], is based upon a mapping of the original impurity problem onto an auxiliary open quantum system, consisting of the interacting impurity coupled to bath sites as well as to a Markovian environment. The dynamics of the auxiliary system is governed by a Lindblad master equation whose parameters are used to…
Presented in this thesis are a set of projects which lie at the intersection between strong correlations and topological phases of matter. The first of these projects is a treatment of an infinite dimensional generalization of the SSH model with local Coulomb interactions which is solved exactly using DMFT-NRG. Observed in the solution is power-law augmentation of the non-interacting density of states, as well as a Mott transition. This calculation represents an exact solution to an interacting topological insulator in the strongly correlated regime at zero temperature. The second set of proje…
We investigate the basic constraint on amplifying the asymmetry in quantum states with correlated catalysts. Here a correlated catalyst is a finite-dimensional auxiliary, which exactly preserves its reduced state while allowed to become correlated to the quantum system. Interestingly, we prove that under translationally invariant operations, catalysts in pure states are useless in any state transformation, while with a correlated catalyst in a mixed state, one can enlarge the set of accessible states from an initially asymmetric state. Moreover, we show that the power of a catalyst increases w…

To improve the performance of multi-qubit algorithms on quantum devices it is critical to have methods for characterizing non-local quantum errors such as crosstalk. To address this issue, we propose and test an extension to the analysis of simultaneous randomized benchmarking data -- correlated randomized benchmarking. We fit the decay of correlated polarizations to a composition of fixed-weight depolarizing maps to characterize the locality and weight of crosstalk errors. From these errors we introduce a crosstalk metric which indicates the distance to the closest map with only local errors.…
The auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method provides a computational framework for solving the time-independent Schroedinger equation in atoms, molecules, solids, and a variety of model systems. AFQMC has recently witnessed remarkable growth, especially as a tool for electronic structure computations in real materials. The method has demonstrated excellent accuracy across a variety of correlated electron systems. Taking the form of stochastic evolution in a manifold of non-orthogonal Slater determinants, the method resembles an ensemble of density-functional theory (DFT) calculation…

In order to exploit quantum advantages, quantum algorithms are indispensable for operating machine learning with quantum computers. We here propose an intriguing hybrid approach of quantum information processing for quantum linear regression, which utilizes both discrete and continuous quantum variables, in contrast to existing wisdoms based solely upon discrete qubits. In our framework, data information is encoded in a qubit system, while information processing is tackled using auxiliary continuous qumodes via qubit-qumode interactions. Moreover, it is also elaborated that finite squeezing is…
Quantum collision models are receiving increasing attention as they describe many nontrivial phenomena in dynamics of open quantum systems. In a general scenario of both fundamental and practical interest, a quantum system repeatedly interacts with individual particles or modes forming a correlated and structured reservoir; however, classical and quantum environment correlations greatly complicate the calculation and interpretation of the system dynamics. Here we propose an exact solution to this problem based on the tensor network formalism. We find a natural Markovian embedding for the syste…
The class of possible thermodynamic conversions can be extended by introducing an auxiliary system called catalyst, which assists state conversion while remaining its own state unchanged. We reveal a complete characterization of catalytic state conversion in quantum and single-shot thermodynamics by allowing an infinitesimal correlation between the system and the catalyst. Specifically, we prove that a single thermodynamic potential, which provides the necessary and sufficient condition for the correlated-catalytic state conversion, is given by the standard nonequilibrium free energy defined w…
By using a correlated projection operator, the time-convolutionless (TCL) method to derive a quantum master equation can be utilized to investigate the transport behavior of quantum systems as well. Here, we analyze a three-dimensional anisotropic quantum model system according to this technique. The system consists of Heisenberg coupled two-level systems in one direction and weak random interactions in all other ones. Depending on the partition chosen, we obtain ballistic behavior along the chains and normal transport in the perpendicular direction. These results are perfectly confirmed by th…
We propose and analyze a new method for quantum metrology based on stable non-equilibrium states of quantum matter. Our approach utilizes quantum correlations stabilized by strong interactions and periodic driving. As an example, we present an explicit protocol to perform Floquet enhanced measurements of an oscillating magnetic field in Ising-interacting spin systems. Our protocol allows one to circumvent the interaction-induced decoherence associated with high density spin ensembles and is robust to the presence of noise and imperfections. Applications to nanoscale magnetic sensing and precis…
