We investigate through numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations the influence of the surface roughness on the fluid flow through fracture joints. Using the Hurst exponent $H$ to characterize the roughness of the self-affine surfaces that constitute the fracture, our analysis reveal the important interplay between geometry and inertia on the flow. Precisely, for low values of Reynolds numbers Re, we use Darcy's law to quantify the hydraulic resistance $G$ of the fracture and show that its dependence on $H$ can be explained in terms of a simple geometrical model for the tortuosity $τ$ of the channel. At sufficiently high values of Re, when inertial effects become relevant, our results reveal that nonlinear corrections up to third-order to Darcy's law are aproximately proportional to $H$. These results imply that the resistance $G$ to the flow follows a universal behavior by simply rescaling it in terms of the fracture resistivity and using an effective Reynolds number, namely, Re/$H$. Our results also reveal the presence of quasi-one-dimensional channeling, even considering the absence of shear displacement between upper and lower surfaces of the self-affine fracture.
Transport properties of three-dimensional self-affine rough fractures are studied by means of an effective-medium analysis and numerical simulations using the Lattice-Boltzmann method. The numerical results show that the effective-medium approximation predicts the right scaling behavior of the permeability and of the velocity fluctuations, in terms of the aperture of the fracture, the roughness exponent and the characteristic length of the fracture surfaces, in the limit of small separation between surfaces. The permeability of the fractures is also investigated as a function of the normal and…
The permeability of two-dimensional fractures with self-affine fractal roughness is studied via analytic arguments and numerical simulations. The limit where the roughness amplitude is small compared with average fracture aperture is analyzed by a perturbation method, while in the opposite case of narrow aperture, we use heuristic arguments based on lubrication theory. Numerical simulations, using the lattice Boltzmann method, are used to examine the complete range of aperture sizes, and confirm the analytic arguments.
We propose a method for calculating the effective permeability of two-dimensional self-affine permeability fields based on generalizing the one-dimensional concept of a bottleneck. We test the method on fracture faults where the local permeability field is given by the cube of the aperture field. The method remains accurate even when there is substantial mechanical overlap between the two fracture surfaces. The computational efficiency of the method is comparable to calculating a simple average and is more than two orders of magnitude faster than solving the Reynolds equations using a finite-d…
We demonstrate that the first arrival time in dispersive processes in self-affine fractures are governed by the same length scale characterizing the fractures as that which controls their permeability. In one-dimensional channel flow this length scale is the aperture of the bottle neck, i.e., the region having the smallest aperture. In two dimensions, the concept of a bottle neck is generalized to that of a minimal path normal to the flow. The length scale is then the average aperture along this path. There is a linear relationship between the first arrival time and this length scale, even whe…
This research has found a novel computational efficient method of modelling flow at low Reynolds number through fracture networks. The numerical analysis was performed by connecting Hele-Shaw cells to investigate the effect of the intersection to the pressure field and hydraulic resistance for given inlet and outlet pressure values. In this analysis, the impact of intersecting length, intersecting angle and fracture aperture on the fluid flow was studied. For this purpose, two models with different topologies were established. The Hele-Shaw simulation results for hydraulic resistance, pressure…
The effect on the transport properties of fractures of a relative shear displacement $\vec u$ of rough walls with complementary self-affine surfaces has been studied experimentally and numerically. The shear displacement $\vec u$ induces an anisotropy of the aperture field with a correlation length scaling as $u$ and significantly larger in the direction perpendicular to $\vec u$. This reflects the appearance of long range channels perpendicular to $\vec u$ resulting in a higher effective permeability for flow in the direction perpendicular to the shear. Miscible displacements fronts in such f…
We introduce a partitioned coupling approach for iterative coupling of flow processes in deformable fractures embedded in a poro-elastic medium that is enhanced by interface quasi-Newton (IQN) methods. In this scope, a unique computational decomposition into a fracture flow and a poro-elastic domain is developed, where communication and numerical coupling of the individual solvers are realized by consulting the open-source library preCICE. The underlying physical problem is introduced by a brief derivation of the governing equations and interface conditions of fracture flow and poro-elastic do…
A mathematical model for computation of the fluid pressure in a reservoir drained by a horizontal multiple fractured well is proposed. The model is applicable for an arbitrary network of fractures with different finite conductivities of each segment, for variable in space and time physical parameters of the reservoir and for different field development plans. The variational formulation of the model allows effective numerical simulation using the finite element method. Case studies demonstrate how the main flow characteristics (well productivity, pressure distribution) depend on the geometrica…
This paper investigates proppant flow and transport in intersected fractures at angles typical for intersections of pre-existing and new hydraulic fractures. Proppant is small granular material, which is placed into hydraulic fractures during geothermal and hydrocarbon reservoir stimulation and props the fluid paths open during reservoir exploitation. This study uses plexiglas laboratory slot experiments enhanced with an advanced image analysis for identifying particle trajectories and quantifying slurry velocities. Although proppant flow and transport has been broadly studied, the effects of …
The characteristics of the hydro-thermal flow which occurs when a cold fluid is injected into a hot fractured bedrock depend on the morphology of the fracture. We consider a sharp triangular asperity, invariant in one direction, perturbing an otherwise flat fracture. We investigate its influence on the macroscopic hydraulic transmissivity and heat transfer efficiency, at fixed low Reynolds number. In this study, numerical simulations are done with a coupled lattice Boltzmann method that solves both the complete Navier-Stokes and advection-diffusion equations in three dimensions. The results ar…
In this study, we analyze the flow filtration process of slightly compressible fluids in fractured porous media. We model the coupled fractured porous media system, where the linear Darcy flow is considered in porous media and the nonlinear Forchheimer equation is used inside the fracture. Flow in the fracture is modeled as a reduced low dimensional BVP which is coupled with an equation in the reservoir. We prove that the solution of the reduced model can serve very accurately to approximate the solution of the actual high-dimensional flow in reservoir fracture system, because the thickness of…
The main purpose of this work is to simulate two-phase flow in the form of immiscible displacement through anisotropic, three-dimensional (3D) discrete fracture networks (DFN). The considered DFNs are artificially generated, based on a general distribution function or are conditioned on measured data from deep geological investigations. We introduce several modifications to the invasion percolation (MIP) to incorporate fracture inclinations, intersection lines, as well as the hydraulic path length inside the fractures. Additionally a trapping algorithm is implemented that forbids any advance o…
A model function relating effective stress to fracture permeability is developed from Hooke's law, implemented in the tensorial form of Darcy's law, and used to evaluate discharge rates and pressure distributions at regional scales. The model takes into account elastic and statistical fracture parameters, and is able to simulate real stress-dependent permeabilities from laboratory to field studies. This modeling approach gains in phenomenology in comparison to the classical ones because the permeability tensors may vary in both strength and principal directions according to effective stresses.…
We study modeling of two-phase flow in highly heterogeneous fractured and porous media. The flow behaviour is strongly influenced by mass transfer between a highly permeable (mobile) fracture domain and less permeable (immobile) matrix blocks. We quantify the effective two-phase flow behaviour using a multirate rate mass transfer (MRMT) approach. We discuss the range of applicability of the MRMT approach in terms of the pertinent viscous and capillary diffusion time scales. We scrutinize the linearization of capillary diffusion in the immobile regions, which allows for the formulation of MRMT …
Symmetric drainage flow of a compressible fluid from a fracture modeled as a long narrow channel is studied on the basis of linearized compressible Navier-Stokes equations with no-slip condition. The Helmholtz decomposition theorem is used to decompose the velocity field into an irrotational part and a solenoidal part. The irrotational velocity is driven by the fluid's volumetric expansion whilst the role of the solenoidal velocity is to enforce the no-slip condition for the overall velocity and it does not contribute to the mass flow rate. It is found that at large times this no-slip flow exh…
Flow and transport are studied in transparent model fractures with rough complementary self-affine walls with a relative shear displacement $\vec{u}$. The aperture field is shown to display long range correlations perpendicular to $\vec{u}$: for flow in that direction, the width and geometry of the front of a dyed shear-thinning polymer solution displacing a transparent one have been studied as a function of the fluid rheology and flow rate. The front width increases linearly with distance indicating a convection of the fluids with a low transverse mixing between the flow paths. The width also…
Tracer diffusion and hydrodynamic dispersion in two-dimensional fractures with self-affine roughness is studied by analytic and numerical methods. Numerical simulations were performed via the lattice-Boltzmann approach, using a new boundary condition for tracer particles that improves the accuracy of the method. The reduction in the diffusive transport, due to the fractal geometry of the fracture surfaces, is analyzed for different fracture apertures. In the limit of small aperture fluctuations we derive the correction to the diffusive coefficient in terms of the tortuosity, which accounts for…
We present modeling of an incompressible viscous flow through a fracture adjacent to a porous medium. We consider a fast stationary flow, predominantly tangential to the porous medium. Slow flow in such setting can be described by the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman slip. For fast flows, a nonlinear filtration law in the porous medium and a non- linear interface law are expected. In this paper we rigorously derive a quadratic effective slip interface law which holds for a range of Reynolds numbers and fracture widths. The porous medium flow is described by the Darcys law. The result shows that the inte…
Natural open joints in rocks commonly present multi-scale self-affine apertures. This geometrical complexity affects fluid transport and heat exchange between the flow- ing fluid and the surrounding rock. In particular, long range correlations of self-affine apertures induce strong channeling of the flow which influences both mass and heat advection. A key question is to find a geometrical model of the complex aperture that describes at best the macroscopic properties (hydraulic conductivity, heat exchange) with the smallest number of parameters. Solving numerically the Stokes and heat equa- t…
We study the dynamics of proppants carried by fluid driven into an evolving penny-shaped fracture. The behaviour of the slurry flow is investigated in two phases: pressurised injection and elastic closure. During injection the slurry is modelled using a frictional rheology that takes into account the shear-induced migration and jamming of the proppants. Making pragmatic assumptions of negligible toughness and cross-fracture fluid slip, we find self-similar solutions supporting a range of proppant concentration profiles. In particular, we define an effective viscosity, which equates the fractur…
In low-permeability rock, fluid and mineral transport occur in pores and fracture apertures at the scale of micrometers and below. At this scale, the presence of surface charge, and a resultant electrical double layer, may considerably alter transport properties. However, due to the inherent non-linearity of the governing equations, numerical and theoretical studies of the coupling between electric double layers and flow have mostly been limited to two-dimensional or axisymmetric geometries. Here, we present comprehensive three-dimensional simulations of electrohydrodynamic flow in an idealize…
The miscible displacement of a shear-thinning fluid by another of same rheological properties is studied experimentally in a transparent fracture by an optical technique imaging relative concentration distributions. The fracture walls have complementary self-affine geometries and are shifted laterally in the direction perpendicular to the mean flow velocity {\bf U} : the flow field is strongly channelized and macro dispersion controls the front structure for Péclet numbers above a few units. The global front width increases then linearly with time and reflects the velocity distribution between…
Complexity of fluid flow in a rough fracture is induced by the complex configurations of opening areas between the fracture planes. In this study, we model fluid flow in an evolvable real rock joint structure, which under certain normal load is sheared. In an experimental study, information regarding about apertures of the rock joint during consecutive 20 mm displacements and fluid flow (permeability) in different pressure heads have been recorded by a scanner laser. Our aim in this study is to simulate the fluid flow in the mentioned complex geometries using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM)…
Accurately resolving the coupled momentum transfer between the liquid and solid phases of complex fluids is a fundamental problem in multiphase transport processes, such as hydraulic fracture operations. Specifically we need to characterize the dependence of the normalized average fluid-particle force $\langle F \rangle$ on the volume fraction of the dispersed solid phase and on the rheology of the complex fluid matrix. Here we use direct numerical simulations (DNS) to study the creeping flow ($Re\ll 1$) of viscoelastic fluids through static random arrays of monodisperse spherical particles us…
We performed a set of numerical simulations to characterize the interplay of fracture network topology, upscaling, and mesh refinement on flow and transport properties in fractured porous media. We generated a set of generic three-dimensional discrete fracture networks at various densities, where the radii of the fractures were sampled from a truncated power-law distribution, and whose parameters were loosely based on field site characterizations. We also considered five network densities, which were defined using a dimensionless version of density based on percolation theory. Once the network…
It is stated in the main in essence new approach to mechanics of the stressed state of the solid body from statistically isotropic material and the homogeneous liquid dynamics. The approach essence is in the detected property of the core-shell spontaneous structurization of internal energy of the solid and liquid bodies in its natural state and under action of external forces. The method elements of construction of physically adequate model of the stressed state of the solid and liquid bodies, reproduced exactly its behavior on the stages of elastic and plastic deformation, flow and fracture, …
This study presents a phase field model for brittle fracture in fluid-infiltrating vuggy porous media. While the state-of-the-art in hydraulic phase field fracture considers Darcian fracture flow with enhanced permeability along the crack, in this study, the phase field not only acts as a damage variable that provides diffuse representation of cracks or cavities, but also acts as an indicator function that separates the domain into two regions where fluid flows are governed by Stokes and Darcy equations, respectively. Since the phase field and its gradient can be respectively regarded as smoot…
