A stochastic model predictive control framework over unreliable Bernoulli communication channels, in the presence of unbounded process noise and under bounded control inputs, is presented for tracking a reference signal. The data losses in the control channel are compensated by a carefully designed transmission protocol, and that of the sensor channel by a dropout compensator. A class of saturated, disturbance feedback policies is proposed for control in the presence of noisy dropout compensation. A reference governor is employed to generate trackable reference trajectories and stability constraints are employed to ensure mean-square boundedness of the reference tracking error. The overall approach yields a computationally tractable quadratic program, which can be iteratively solved online.
We propose a provably stabilizing and tractable approach for control of constrained linear systems under intermittent observations and unreliable transmissions of control commands. A smart sensor equipped with a Kalman filter is employed for the estimation of the states from incomplete and corrupt measurements, and an estimator at the controller side optimally feeds the intermittently received sensor data to the controller. The remote controller iteratively solves constrained stochastic optimal control problems and transmits the control commands according to a carefully designed transmission p…
The paper discusses multistep nonlinear model-predictive control (NMPC) schemes for the tracking of a car model along a given reference track. In particular we will compare the numerical performance and robustness of classic single step NMPC, multistep NMPC without re-optimization, multistep NMPC with re-optimization, and multistep NMPC with sensitivity updates instead of a full re-optimization.
Many control tasks can be formulated as a tracking problem of a known or unknown reference signal. Examples are movement compensation in collaborative robotics, the synchronisation of oscillations for power systems or reference tracking of recipes in chemical process operation. Tracking performance as well as guaranteeing stability of the closed loop strongly depends on two factors: Firstly, it depends on whether the future desired tracking reference signal is known and, secondly, whether the system can track the reference at all. This paper shows how to use machine learning, i.e. Gaussian pro…
The paper develops a Model Predictive Controller for constrained control of spacecraft attitude with reaction wheel actuators. The controller exploits a special formulation of the cost with the reference governor like term, a low complexity addition of integral action to guarantee offset-free tracking of attitude set points, and an online optimization algorithm for the solution of the Quadratic Programming problem which is tailored to run in fixed-point arithmetic. Simulations on a nonlinear spacecraft model demonstrate that the MPC controller achieves good tracking performance while satisfyin…
For controller design for systems on manifolds embedded in Euclidean space, it is convenient to utilize a theory that requires a single global coordinate system on the ambient Euclidean space rather than multiple local charts on the manifold or coordinate-free tools from differential geometry. In this article, we apply such a theory to design model predictive tracking controllers for systems whose dynamics evolve on manifolds and illustrate its efficacy with the fully actuated rigid body attitude control system.
In this paper an offset-free model predictive control scheme is presented for fractional-order systems using the Grünwald-Letnikov derivative. The infinite-history fractional-order system is approximated by a finite-dimensional state-space system and the modeling error is cast as a bounded disturbance term. Using a state observer, it is shown that the unknown disturbance at steady state can be reconstructed and modeling errors and other persistent disturbances can be attenuated. The effectiveness of the proposed controller-observer ensemble is demonstrated in the optimal administration of an a…
Motion planning for autonomous vehicles requires spatio-temporal motion plans (i.e. state trajectories) to account for dynamic obstacles. This requires a trajectory tracking control process which faithfully tracks planned trajectories. In this paper, a control scheme is presented which first optimizes a planned trajectory and then tracks the optimized trajectory using a feedback-feedforward controller. The feedforward element is calculated in a model predictive manner with a cost function focusing on driving performance. Stability of the error dynamic is then guaranteed by the design of the fe…
In this paper, we propose a chance constrained stochastic model predictive control scheme for reference tracking of distributed linear time-invariant systems with additive stochastic uncertainty. The chance constraints are reformulated analytically based on mean-variance information, where we design suitable Probabilistic Reachable Sets for constraint tightening. Furthermore, the chance constraints are proven to be satisfied in closed-loop operation. The design of an invariant set for tracking complements the controller and ensures convergence to arbitrary admissible reference points, while a …
This paper presents a robust economic model predictive control (EMPC) formulation with zone tracking for discrete-time uncertain nonlinear systems. The proposed design ensures that the zone tracking objective is achieved in finite steps and at the same time optimizes the economic performance. In the proposed design, instead of tracking the original target zone, a robust control invariant set within the target zone is determined and is used as the actual zone tracked in the proposed EMPC. This approach ensures that the zone tracking objective is achieved within finite steps and once the zone tr…
In this paper we present a model-based control approach for autonomous flight of kites for wind power generation. Predictive models are considered to compensate for delay in the kite dynamics. We apply Model Predictive Control (MPC), with the objective of guiding the kite to follow a figure-of-eight trajectory, in the outer loop of a two level control cascade. The tracking capabilities of the inner-loop controller depend on the operating conditions and are assessed via a frequency domain robustness analysis. We take the limitations of the inner tracking controller into account by encoding them…
Transformerless grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have given rise to more research and commercial interests due to their multiple merits, e.g., low leakage current and small size. In this paper, a model-predictive-control (MPC)-based strategy for controlling transformerless H5 inverter for single-phase PV distributed generation system is proposed. The method further reduces the PV leakage current in a cost-effective and safe manner and it shows a satisfactory fault-ride-through capability. Moreover, for the first of its kind, PV maximum power point tracking is implemented in the s…
This article presents a sparse, low-memory footprint optimization algorithm for the implementation of the model predictive control (MPC) for tracking formulation in embedded systems. This MPC formulation has several advantages over standard MPC formulations, such as an increased domain of attraction and guaranteed recursive feasibility even in the event of a sudden reference change. However, this comes at the expense of the addition of a small amount of decision variables to the MPC's optimization problem that complicates the structure of its matrices. We propose a sparse optimization algorith…

In this paper we propose a novel decision making architecture for Robust Model Predictive Path Integral control (RMPPI) and investigate its performance guarantees and applicability to off-road navigation. Key building blocks of the proposed architecture are an augmented state space representation of the system consisting of nominal and actual dynamics, a placeholder for different types of tracking controllers, a safety logic for nominal state propagation, and an importance sampling scheme that takes into account the capabilities of the underlying tracking control. Using these ingredients, we d…
In this paper, we present a quasi infinite horizon nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) scheme for tracking of generic reference trajectories. This scheme is applicable to nonlinear systems, which are locally incrementally stabilizable. For such systems, we provide a reference generic offline procedure to compute an incrementally stabilizing feedback with a continuously parameterized quadratic quasi infinite horizon terminal cost. As a result we get a nonlinear reference tracking MPC scheme with a valid terminal cost for general reachable reference trajectories without increasing the onlin…
Economic model predictive control and tracking model predictive control are two popular advanced process control strategies used in various of fields. Nevertheless, which one should be chosen to achieve better performance in the presence of noise is uncertain when designing a control system. To this end, a sensitivity-based performance assessment approach is proposed to pre-evaluate the dynamic economic and tracking performance of them in this work. First, their controller gains around the optimal steady state are evaluated by calculating the sensitivities of corresponding constrained dynamic …
