Vacuum Technology for Ion Sources

The basic notions of vacuum technology for ion sources are presented, with emphasis on pressure profile calculation and choice of pumping technique. A Monte Carlo code (Molflow+) for the evaluation of conductances and the vacuum-electrical analogy for the calculation of time-dependent pressure variations are introduced. The specific case of the Linac4 H- source is reviewed.

Towards a novel laser-driven method of exotic nuclei extraction-acceleration for fundamental physics and technology

The measurement of properties of exotic nuclei, essential for fundamental nuclear physics, now confronts a formidable challenge for contemporary radiofrequency accelerator technology. Design and technology of high-power couplers, with a special view on superconducting RF

The high-power RF coupler is the connecting part between the RF transmission line and the RF cavity and provides the electromagnetic power to the cavity and the particle beam. In addition to this RF function it also has to provide the vacuum barrier for the beam vacuum. High-power couplers are one of the most critical parts of the RF cavity system in an accelerator. A good RF and mechanical design as well as a high quality fabrication are essential for efficient and reliable operation of an accelerator.

Outgassing properties of vacuum materials for particle accelerators

Gas load and pumping determine the quality of vacuum systems. In particle accelerators, once leaks are excluded, outgassing of materials is an important source of gas together with degassing induced by particle beams. Understanding, predicting, and measuring gas release from materials in vacuum are among the fundamental tasks of ultrahigh-vacuum experts. Fundamental of cryogenics (for superconducting RF technology)

This review briefly illustrates a few fundamental concepts of cryogenic engineering, the technological practice that allows reaching and maintaining the low-temperature operating conditions of the superconducting devices needed in particle accelerators. To limit the scope of the task, and not to duplicate coverage of cryogenic engineering concepts particularly relevant to superconducting magnets that can be found in previous CAS editions, the overview presented in this course focuses on superconducting radio-frequency cavities.

Accelerator Vacuum

This lecture introduces major physics and technology aspects of accelerator vacuum systems. Following an introduction, in the second section generic vacuum quantities such as pressure, gas density, the gas equation, pumping speed, conductance are introduced. Since accelerators typically have lengthy vacuum tubes, one-dimensional calculation is in many cases sufficient to compute a pressure profile for an accelerator, and methods for doing so are developed in the next section. Analytical methods for vacuum simulations in high energy accelerators for future machines based on the LHC performance
