Image harmonization is an important step in photo editing to achieve visual consistency in composite images by adjusting the appearances of foreground to make it compatible with background. Previous approaches to harmonize composites are based on training of encoder-decoder networks from scratch, which makes it challenging for a neural network to learn a high-level representation of objects. We propose a novel architecture to utilize the space of high-level features learned by a pre-trained classification network. We create our models as a combination of existing encoder-decoder architectures and a pre-trained foreground-aware deep high-resolution network. We extensively evaluate the proposed method on existing image harmonization benchmark and set up a new state-of-the-art in terms of MSE and PSNR metrics. The code and trained models are available at \url{https://github.com/saic-vul/image_harmonization}.
Video composition aims to generate a composite video by combining the foreground of one video with the background of another video, but the inserted foreground may be incompatible with the background in terms of color and illumination. Video harmonization aims to adjust the foreground of a composite video to make it compatible with the background. So far, video harmonization has only received limited attention and there is no public dataset for video harmonization. In this work, we construct a new video harmonization dataset HYouTube by adjusting the foreground of real videos to create synthet…
Image harmonization task aims at harmonizing different composite foreground regions according to specific background image. Previous methods would rather focus on improving the reconstruction ability of the generator by some internal enhancements such as attention, adaptive normalization and light adjustment, $etc.$. However, they pay less attention to discriminating the foreground and background appearance features within a restricted generator, which becomes a new challenge in image harmonization task. In this paper, we propose a novel image harmonization framework with external style fusion…
Image composition is a fundamental operation in image editing field. However, unharmonious foreground and background downgrade the quality of composite image. Image harmonization, which adjusts the foreground to improve the consistency, is an essential yet challenging task. Previous deep learning based methods mainly focus on directly learning the mapping from composite image to real image, while ignoring the crucial guidance role that background plays. In this work, with the assumption that the foreground needs to be translated to the same domain as background, we formulate image harmonizatio…
Integrating a foreground object into a background scene with illumination harmonization is an important but challenging task in computer vision and augmented reality community. Existing methods mainly focus on foreground and background appearance consistency or the foreground object shadow generation, which rarely consider global appearance and illumination harmonization. In this paper, we formulate seamless illumination harmonization as an illumination exchange and aggregation problem. Specifically, we firstly apply a physically-based rendering method to construct a large-scale, high-quality …
Image harmonization targets at adjusting the foreground in a composite image to make it compatible with the background, producing a more realistic and harmonious image. Training deep image harmonization network requires abundant training data, but it is extremely difficult to acquire training pairs of composite images and ground-truth harmonious images. Therefore, existing works turn to adjust the foreground appearance in a real image to create a synthetic composite image. However, such adjustment may not faithfully reflect the natural illumination change of foreground. In this work, we explor…
Image harmonization aims to generate a more realistic appearance of foreground and background for a composite image. Existing methods perform the same harmonization process for the whole foreground. However, the implanted foreground always contains different appearance patterns. All the existing solutions ignore the difference of each color block and losing some specific details. Therefore, we propose a novel global-local two stages framework for Fine-grained Region-aware Image Harmonization (FRIH), which is trained end-to-end. In the first stage, the whole input foreground mask is used to mak…
To achieve visual consistency in composite images, recent image harmonization methods typically summarize the appearance pattern of global background and apply it to the global foreground without location discrepancy. However, for a real image, the appearances (illumination, color temperature, saturation, hue, texture, etc) of different regions can vary significantly. So previous methods, which transfer the appearance globally, are not optimal. Trying to solve this issue, we firstly match the contents between the foreground and background and then adaptively adjust every foreground location ac…

Image composition is an important operation in image processing, but the inconsistency between foreground and background significantly degrades the quality of composite image. Image harmonization, aiming to make the foreground compatible with the background, is a promising yet challenging task. Image composition plays a common but important role in photo editing. To acquire photo-realistic composite images, one must adjust the appearance and visual style of the foreground to be compatible with the background. Existing deep learning methods for harmonizing composite images directly learn an image mapping network from the composite to the real one, without explicit exploration on visual style consistency between the background and the foreground images. To ensure the visual style consistency between the foreground and the background, in this paper, we treat image harmonization as a sty…

Learning-based image harmonization techniques are usually trained to undo synthetic random global transformations applied to a masked foreground in a single ground truth photo. This simulated data does not model many of the important appearance mismatches (illumination, object boundaries, etc.) between foreground and background in real composites, leading to models that do not generalize well and cannot model complex local changes. We propose a new semi-supervised training strategy that addresses this problem and lets us learn complex local appearance harmonization from unpaired real composite…

Image harmonization aims to improve the quality of image compositing by matching the "appearance" (\eg, color tone, brightness and contrast) between foreground and background images. However, collecting large-scale annotated datasets for this task requires complex professional retouching. Instead, we propose a novel Self-Supervised Harmonization framework (SSH) that can be trained using just "free" natural images without being edited. We reformulate the image harmonization problem from a representation fusion perspective, which separately processes the foreground and background examples, to ad…

Image harmonization aims to achieve visual consistency in composite images by adapting a foreground to make it compatible with a background. However, existing methods always only use the real image as the positive sample to guide the training, and at most introduce the corresponding composite image as a single negative sample for an auxiliary constraint, which leads to limited distortion knowledge, and further causes a too large solution space, making the generated harmonized image distorted. Besides, none of them jointly constrain from the foreground self-style and foreground-background style…

Image matting and image harmonization are two important tasks in image composition. Image matting, aiming to achieve foreground boundary details, and image harmonization, aiming to make the background compatible with the foreground, are both promising yet challenging tasks. Previous works consider optimizing these two tasks separately, which may lead to a sub-optimal solution. We propose to optimize matting and harmonization simultaneously to get better performance on both the two tasks and achieve more natural results. We propose a new Generative Adversarial (GAN) framework which optimizing t…

Compositing is one of the most common operations in photo editing. To generate realistic composites, the appearances of foreground and background need to be adjusted to make them compatible. Previous approaches to harmonize composites have focused on learning statistical relationships between hand-crafted appearance features of the foreground and background, which is unreliable especially when the contents in the two layers are vastly different. In this work, we propose an end-to-end deep convolutional neural network for image harmonization, which can capture both the context and semantic info…
Compositing is one of the most important editing operations for images and videos. The process of improving the realism of composite results is often called harmonization. Previous approaches for harmonization mainly focus on images. In this work, we take one step further to attack the problem of video harmonization. Specifically, we train a convolutional neural network in an adversarial way, exploiting a pixel-wise disharmony discriminator to achieve more realistic harmonized results and introducing a temporal loss to increase temporal consistency between consecutive harmonized frames. Thanks…

Current image harmonization methods consider the entire background as the guidance for harmonization. However, this may limit the capability for user to choose any specific object/person in the background to guide the harmonization. To enable flexible interaction between user and harmonization, we introduce interactive harmonization, a new setting where the harmonization is performed with respect to a selected \emph{region} in the reference image instead of the entire background. A new flexible framework that allows users to pick certain regions of the background image and use it to guide the …

Image harmonization aims to modify the color of the composited region with respect to the specific background. Previous works model this task as a pixel-wise image-to-image translation using UNet family structures. However, the model size and computational cost limit the ability of their models on edge devices and higher-resolution images. To this end, we propose a novel spatial-separated curve rendering network(S$^2$CRNet) for efficient and high-resolution image harmonization for the first time. In S$^2$CRNet, we firstly extract the spatial-separated embeddings from the thumbnails of the mask…
Dealing with the inconsistency between a foreground object and a background image is a challenging task in high-fidelity image composition. State-of-the-art methods strive to harmonize the composed image by adapting the style of foreground objects to be compatible with the background image, whereas the potential shadow of foreground objects within the composed image which is critical to the composition realism is largely neglected. In this paper, we propose an Adversarial Image Composition Net (AIC-Net) that achieves realistic image composition by considering potential shadows that the foregro…

Given a composite image, image harmonization aims to adjust the foreground to make it compatible with the background. High-resolution image harmonization is in high demand, but still remains unexplored. Conventional image harmonization methods learn global RGB-to-RGB transformation which could effortlessly scale to high resolution, but ignore diverse local context. Recent deep learning methods learn the dense pixel-to-pixel transformation which could generate harmonious outputs, but are highly constrained in low resolution. In this work, we propose a high-resolution image harmonization network…

Image color harmonization algorithm aims to automatically match the color distribution of foreground and background images captured in different conditions. Previous deep learning based models neglect two issues that are critical for practical applications, namely high resolution (HR) image processing and model comprehensibility. In this paper, we propose a novel Deep Comprehensible Color Filter (DCCF) learning framework for high-resolution image harmonization. Specifically, DCCF first downsamples the original input image to its low-resolution (LR) counter-part, then learns four human comprehe…

Previous harmonization methods focus on adjusting one inharmonious region in an image based on an input mask. They may face problems when dealing with different perturbations on different semantic regions without available input masks. To deal with the problem that one image has been pasted with several foregrounds coming from different images and needs to harmonize them towards different domain directions without any mask as input, we propose a new semantic-guided multi-mask image harmonization task. Different from the previous single-mask image harmonization task, each inharmonious image is …

Foreground-aware image synthesis aims to generate images as well as their foreground masks. A common approach is to formulate an image as an masked blending of a foreground image and a background image. It is a challenging problem because it is prone to reach the trivial solution where either image overwhelms the other, i.e., the masks become completely full or empty, and the foreground and background are not meaningfully separated. We present FurryGAN with three key components: 1) imposing both the foreground image and the composite image to be realistic, 2) designing a mask as a combination …
