We tackle the problem of joint perception and motion forecasting in the context of self-driving vehicles. Towards this goal we propose PnPNet, an end-to-end model that takes as input sequential sensor data, and outputs at each time step object tracks and their future trajectories. The key component is a novel tracking module that generates object tracks online from detections and exploits trajectory level features for motion forecasting. Specifically, the object tracks get updated at each time step by solving both the data association problem and the trajectory estimation problem. Importantly, the whole model is end-to-end trainable and benefits from joint optimization of all tasks. We validate PnPNet on two large-scale driving datasets, and show significant improvements over the state-of-the-art with better occlusion recovery and more accurate future prediction.
This paper introduces a novel perception framework that has the ability to identify and track objects in autonomous vehicle's field of view. The proposed algorithms don't require any training for achieving this goal. The framework makes use of ego-vehicle's pose estimation and a KD-Tree-based segmentation algorithm to generate object clusters. In turn, using a VFH technique, the geometry of each identified object cluster is translated into a multi-modal PDF and a motion model is initiated with every new object cluster for the purpose of robust spatio-temporal tracking. The methodology further …

In this paper, a multi-modal 360$^{\circ}$ framework for 3D object detection and tracking for autonomous vehicles is presented. The process is divided into four main stages. First, images are fed into a CNN network to obtain instance segmentation of the surrounding road participants. Second, LiDAR-to-image association is performed for the estimated mask proposals. Then, the isolated points of every object are processed by a PointNet ensemble to compute their corresponding 3D bounding boxes and poses. Lastly, a tracking stage based on Unscented Kalman Filter is used to track the agents along ti…

In this paper, we address the vision-based detection and tracking problems of multiple aerial vehicles using a single camera and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) as well as the corresponding perception consensus problem (i.e., uniqueness and identical IDs across all observing agents). We design several vision-based decentralized Bayesian multi-tracking filtering strategies to resolve the association between the incoming unsorted measurements obtained by a visual detector algorithm and the tracked agents. We compare their accuracy in different operating conditions as well as their scalability ac…
Recent works have shown that neural networks are vulnerable to carefully crafted adversarial examples (AE). By adding small perturbations to input images, AEs are able to make the victim model predicts incorrect outputs. Several research work in adversarial machine learning started to focus on the detection of AEs in autonomous driving. However, the existing studies either use preliminary assumption on outputs of detections or ignore the tracking system in the perception pipeline. In this paper, we firstly propose a novel distance metric for practical autonomous driving object detection output…

In this paper, we present a new approach to establish an environment model containing a segmentation between static and dynamic background and parametric modeled objects with shape, position and orientation. Multiple laser scanners are fused into a dynamic occupancy grid map resulting in a 360° perception of the environment. A single-stage deep convolutional neural network is combined with a recurrent neural network, which takes a time series of…

We consider the object recognition problem in autonomous driving using automotive radar sensors. Comparing to Lidar sensors, radar is cost-effective and robust in all-weather conditions for perception in autonomous driving. However, radar signals suffer from low angular resolution and precision in recognizing surrounding objects. To enhance the capacity of automotive radar, in this work, we exploit the temporal information from successive ego-centric bird-eye-view radar image frames for radar object recognition. We leverage the consistency of an object's existence and attributes (size, orienta…

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication techniques enable the collaboration between vehicles and many other entities in the neighboring environment, which could fundamentally improve the perception system for autonomous driving. V2X-Sim provides: (1) \hl{multi-agent} sensor recordings from the road-side unit (RSU) and multiple vehicles that enable collab…
Many image-based perception tasks can be formulated as detecting, associating and tracking semantic keypoints, e.g., human body pose estimation and tracking. In this work, we present a general framework that jointly detects and forms spatio-temporal keypoint associations in a single stage, making this the first real-time pose detection and tracking algorithm. We present a generic neural network architecture that uses Composite Fields to detect and construct a spatio-temporal pose which is a single, connected graph whose nodes are the semantic keypoints (e.g., a person's body joints) in multipl…
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) rely on environment perception and behavior prediction to reason about agents in their surroundings. These perception systems must be robust to adverse weather such as rain, fog, and snow. However, validation of these systems is challenging due to their complexity and dependence on observation histories. This paper presents a method for characterizing failures of LiDAR-based perception systems for AVs in adverse weather conditions. We develop a methodology based in reinforcement learning to find likely failures in object tracking and trajectory prediction due to seque…

In this paper, we focus on enabling the autonomous perception and control of a small UAV for a façade inspection task. Specifically, we consider the perception as a planar object pose estimation problem by simplifying the building structure as concatenation of planes, and the control as an optimal reference tracking control problem. First, a vision based adaptive observer is proposed which can realize stable plane pose estimation under …

In this paper, we propose a Variational Neural Network-based version of a Voxel Pseudo Image Tracking (VPIT) method for 3D Single Object Tracking. The Variational Feature Generation Network of the proposed Variational VPIT computes features for target and search regions and the corresponding uncertainties, which are later c…
Current autonomous driving systems are composed of a perception system and a decision system. Both of them are divided into multiple subsystems built up with lots of human heuristics. An end-to-end approach might clean up the system and avoid huge efforts of human engineering, as well as obtain better performance with increasing data and computation resources. Compared to the decision system, the perception system is more suitable to be designed in an end-to-end framework, since it does not require online driving exploration. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end approach for autonomous…

Transformer-based visual object tracking has been utilized extensively. However, the Transformer structure is lack of enough inductive bias. In addition, only focusing on encoding the global feature does harm to modeling local details, which restricts the capability of tracking in aerial robots. Specifically, with local-modeling to global-search mechanism, the proposed tracker replaces the global encoder by a novel local-recognition encoder. In the employed encoder, a local-recognition attention and a local element correction network are carefully designed for reducing the global redundant inf…
