We study high-harmonic generation in two-dimensional electron systems with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling and derive harmonic generation selection rules with the help of group theory. Based on the bandstructures of these minimal models and explicit simulations we reveal how the spin-orbit parameters control the cutoff energy in the high-harmonic spectrum. We also show that the magnetic field and polarization dependence of this spectrum provides information on the magnitude of the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling parameters. The shape of the Fermi surface can be deduced at least qualitatively and if only one type of spin-orbit coupling is present, the coupling strength can be determined.
We demonstrate the generation of high order harmonics in carrier pumping from precessing ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic orders, excited via magnetic resonance, in the presence of topological antiferromagnetic textures. This results in an enhancement of the carrier dynamics by orders of magnitude. Interestingly, the generation process occurs in an intrinsic manner, and is solely governed by the interplay between the s-d exchange coupling underlying the noncollinear antiferromagnetic order and the dynamical s-d exchange parameter of the magnetic drive. Therefore, the relativistic spin-orbit …
The energy and wave function of a harmonically confined two-electron system coupled to light is calculated by separating the wave functions of the relative and center of mass (CM) motions. The relative motion wave function has a known quasi-analytical solution. The light only couples to the CM variable and the coupled equation can be solved with diagonalization without approximations. The approach works for any coupling strength. Examples of wave functions of light-matter hybrid states are presented.
Rigorous electrodynamical simulations based on the nonlinear Drude model are performed to investigate the influence of strong coupling on high harmonic generation by periodic metal gratings. It is shown that a thin dispersive material with a third order nonlinearity strongly coupled to surface plasmon-polaritons significantly affects even harmonics generated solely by the metal. The physical nature of this effect is explained using a simple analytical model and further supported by numerical simulations. Furthermore, the behavior of the second and third harmonics is investigated as a function …
We experimentally investigate second harmonic generation from strongly coupled localized and propagative phonon polariton modes in arrays of silicon carbide nanopillars. Our results clearly demonstrate the hybrid nature of the system's eigenmodes and distinct manifestation of strong coupling in the linear and nonlinear response. While in linear reflectivity the intensity of the two strongly-coupled branches is essentially symmetric and well explained by their respective localized or propagative components, the second harmonic signal presents a strong asymmetry. Analyzing it in detail, we revea…
We theoretically investigate the nonlinear response of bent graphene, in the presence of artificially-enhanced spin-orbit coupling, which can occur either via adatom deposition, or by placing the sheet of bent graphene in contact with a spin-orbit active substrate. We discuss the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and the artificial magnetic field generated by the bending, for both the cases of Rashba and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. For the latter, we introduce a spin-field interaction Hamiltonian addressing directly the electron spin as a degree of freedom. Our findings reveal that …
Optical properties of periodic arrays of nanoholes of a triangular shape with experimentally realizable parameters are examined in both linear and nonlinear regimes. Utilizing fully vectorial three-dimensional approach based on the nonlinear hydrodynamic Drude model describing metal coupled to Maxwells equations and Bloch equations for molecular emitters we analyze linear transmission, reflection, and nonlinear power spectra. Rigorous numerical calculations demonstrating second and third harmonic generation by the triangular hole arrays are performed. It is shown that both the Coulomb interact…
We investigate second harmonic generation (SHG) from hexagonal periodic arrays of triangular nano-holes of aluminum using a self-consistent methodology based on the hydrodynamics-Maxwell-Bloch approach. It is shown that angular polarization patterns of the far-field second harmonic response abide to three-fold symmetry constraints on tensors. When a molecular layer is added to the system and its parameters are adjusted to achieve the strong coupling regime between a localized plasmon mode and molecular excitons, Rabi splitting is observed from occurrence of both single- and two-photon transiti…
A single superconducting artificial atom provides a unique basis for coupling electromagnetic fields and photons hardly achieved with a natural atom. Bringing a pair of harmonic oscillators into resonance with transitions of the three-level atom converts atomic spontaneous processes into correlated emission dynamics. We demonstrate two-mode correlated emission lasing on harmonic oscillators coupled via the fully controllable three-level artificial atom. Correlation of two different color emissions reveals itself as equally narrowed linewiths and quench of their mutual phase-diffusion. The mutu…
In this paper it is studied the influence of a minimal thermal environment on the dynamics of a quantum harmonic oscillator (labelled A), prepared in a coherent state. The environment itself consists of a second oscillator (labelled B), initially in a thermal state. Two types of interaction Hamiltonians are considered, and the time-evolution of the reduced density operator of oscillator A is compared to the one obtained from the usual master equation approach, i.e., assuming that oscillator A is coupled to a large reservoir. An analysis of the linear entropy evolution of oscillator A shows tha…
