We develop the coherent state representation of lattice vibrations to describe their interactions with charge carriers. In direct analogy to quantum optics, the coherent state representation leads from quantized lattice vibrations (phonons) naturally to a quasiclassical field limit, i.e., the deformation potential. To an electron, the deformation field is a sea of hills and valleys, as ``real'' as any external field, morphing and propagating at the sound speed, and growing in magnitude with temperature. In this disordered potential landscape, the charge carrier dynamics is treated nonperturbatively, preserving their coherence beyond single collision events. We show the coherent state picture agrees exactly with the conventional Fock state picture in perturbation theory. Furthermore, it goes beyond by revealing aspects that the conventional theory could not explain: transient localization even at high temperatures by charge carrier coherence effects, and band tails in the density of states due to the self-generated disorder (deformation) potential in a pure crystal. The coherent state paradigm of lattice vibrations supplies tools for probing important questions in condensed matter physics as in quantum optics.
In nanoscale junctions the interaction between charge carriers and the local vibrations results in renormalization, damping and heating of the vibrational modes. We here formulate a nonequilibrium Green's functions based theory to describe such effects. Studying a generic junction model with an off-resonant electronic level, we find a strong bias dependence of the frequency renormalization and vibrational damping accompanied by pronounced nonlinear vibrational heating in junctions with intermediate values of the coupling to the leads. Combining our theory with ab-initio calculations we further…
We have generated and detected the radial-breathing mode of coherent lattice vibrations in single-walled carbon nanotubes using ultrashort laser pulses. Because the band gap is a function of diameter, these diameter oscillations cause ultrafast band gap oscillations, modulating interband excitonic resonances at the phonon frequencies (3-9 THz). Excitation spectra show a large number of pronounced peaks, mapping out chirality distributions in great detail.
Using time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy we have performed the first investigation of the vibrational modes of gold nanoshells. The fundamental isotropic mode launched by a femtosecond pump pulse manifests itself in a pronounced time-domain modulation of the differential transmission probed at the frequency of nanoshell surface plasmon resonance. The modulation amplitude is significantly stronger and the period is longer than in a gold nanoparticle of the same overall size, in agreement with theoretical calculations. This distinct acoustical signature of nanoshells provides a new and effici…
We modulate the atomic structure of bilayer graphene by driving its lattice at resonance with the in-plane E1u lattice vibration at 6.3um. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) with extreme ultra-violet (XUV) pulses, we measure the response of the Dirac electrons near the K-point. We observe that lattice modulation causes anomalous carrier dynamics, with the Dirac electrons reaching lower peak temperatures and relaxing at faster rate compared to when the excitation is applied away from the phonon resonance or in monolayer samples. Frozen phonon calculations predi…
We show room temperature valley coherence with in MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2 monolayers using linear polarization resolved hot photoluminescence (PL), at energies close to the excitation - demonstrating preservation of valley coherence before sufficient scattering events. The features of the co-polarized hot luminescence allow us to extract the lower bound of the binding energy of the A exciton in monolayer MoS2 as 0.42 (+/- 0.02) eV. The broadening of the PL peak is found to be dominated by Boltzmann-type hot luminescence tail, and using the slope of the exponential decay, the carrier temperat…
We investigate the coherent dynamics of carriers in semiconductor superlattices driven by ac-dc electric fields. We solve numerically the time-dependent effective-mass equation for the envelope function. We find that carriers undergo Rabi oscillations when the driving frequency is close to the separation between minibands.
new defect-assisted mechanism of multiphonon intraband carrier relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots, where the carrier is found in a coherent superposition of the initial, final, and defect states, is proposed. It is shown that this mechanism is capable of explaining the observed trends in temperature dependences of the intraband relaxation rates for PbSe and CdSe colloidal nanocrystal quantum dots.
We model generation and propagation of coherent acoustic phonons in piezoelectric InGaN/GaN multi-quantum wells embedded in a \textit{pin} diode structure and compute the time resolved reflectivity signal in simulated pump-probe experiments. Carriers are created in the InGaN wells by ultrafast pumping below the GaN band gap and the dynamics of the photoexcited carriers is treated in a Boltzmann equation framework. Coherent acoustic phonons are generated in the quantum well via both deformation potential electron-phonon and piezoelectric electron-phonon interaction with photogenerated carriers,…
Effects of a coupling between the mechanical vibrations of a quantum dot placed between the two leads of a single electron transistor and coherent tunneling of electrons through a single level in the dot has been studied. We have found that for bias voltages exceeding a certain critical value a dynamical instability occurs and mechanical vibrations of the dot develop into a stable limit cycle. The current-voltage characteristics for such a transistor were calculated and they seem to be in a reasonably good agreement with recent experimental results for the single $C_{60}$-molecule transistor b…
We report on the coherent dynamics of the spin of an individual magnetic atom coupled to carriers in a semiconductor quantum dot which has been investigated by resonant photoluminescence of the positively charged exciton (X+). We demonstrate that a positively charged CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot doped with a single Mn atom forms an ensemble of optical Lambda systems which can be addressed independently. We show that the spin dynamics of the X+Mn complex is dominated by the electron-Mn exchange interaction and report on the coherent dynamics of the electron-Mn spin system that is directly observed in …
Using the group theory and the method of invariants, it is shown how the vibronic potential can be written in a matrix form and the corresponding adiabatic potentials can be found. The molecule having $D_{3d}$ symmetry is considered herein as an example. The symmetries of normal vibrations active in Jahn-Teller's effect were defined. $E-E$ vibronic interaction was considered to obtain vibronic potential energy in a matrix form and thus the adiabatic potential. Significant differences are shown in the construction of a secular matrix $D(\vec{k})$ for defining a dispersion law for charge carrier…
Black phosphorus (BP) exhibits highly anisotropic properties and dynamical behavior that are unique even among two-dimensional and van der Waals (vdW) layered materials. Here, we show that an interlayer lattice contraction and concerted, symmetric intralayer vibrations take place concurrently within few picoseconds following the photoinjection and relaxation of carriers, using ultrafast electron diffraction in the reflection geometry to probe the out-of-plane motions. A strong coupling between the photocarriers and BP's puckered structure, with the alignment of the electronic band structure, i…
Ultrafast carrier relaxation in the 2D topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 [gapped Dirac surface states (SS)] and how it inherits ultrafast relaxation in the 3D TI Bi2Se3 (gapless Dirac SS) remains a challenge for developing new optoelectronic devices based on these materials. Here ultrashort (100 fs) pumping pulses of ~340 nm wavelength (~3.65 eV photon energy) were applied to study ultrafast electron relaxation in the 2D TI Bi2Se3 films with a thickness of 2 and 5 quintuple layers (~2 and ~5 nm, respectively) using transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy in the ultraviolet-visible spectral regi…
We use the scattering matrix approach to derive generalized Bardeen-like formulae for the conductances between the contacts of a phase-coherent multiprobe conductor and a tunneling tip which probes its surface. These conductances are proportional to local partial densities of states, called injectivities and emissivities. The current and the current fluctuations measured at the tip are related to an effective local non-equilibrium distribution function. This distribution function contains the quantum-mechanical phase-coherence of the charge carriers in the conductor and is given as products of…
Mechanical displacements of a nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) shift the electron trajectories and hence perturb phase coherent charge transport through the device. We show theoretically that in the presence of a magnetic feld such quantum-coherent displacements may give rise to an Aharonov-Bohm-type of effect. In particular, we demonstrate that quantum vibrations of a suspended carbon nanotube result in a positive nanotube magnetoresistance, which decreases slowly with the increase of temperature. This effect may enable one to detect quantum displacement fluctuations of a nanomechanical de…
Transient reflectivity spectroscopy is widely used to study ultrafast carrier- and phonon-dynamics in semiconductors. In their heterostructures, it is often not straightforward to distinguish contributions to the signal from the various layers. In this work, we perform transient reflectivity measurements on lattice-matched GaP/Si(001) using a near infrared pulse, to which GaP is transparent. The pump laser pulse can generate coherent longitudinal optical (LO) phonons both in the GaP overlayer as well as in the Si substrate which have distinct frequencies. This enables us to track the amplitude…
Nanophononics has the potential for information transfer, in an analogous manner to its photonic and electronic counterparts. The adoption of phononic systems has been limited, due to difficulties associated with the generation, manipulation, and detection of phonons, especially at GHz frequencies. Existing techniques often require piezoelectric materials with an external radiofrequency excitation that are not readily integrated into existing CMOS infrastructures, while non-piezoelectric demonstrations have been inefficient. In this work, we explore the optomechanical generation of coherent ph…
Transient four-wave mixing studies of bulk GaAs under conditions of broad bandwidth excitation of primarily interband transitions have enabled four-particle correlations tied to degenerate (exciton-exciton) and nondegenerate (exciton-carrier) interactions to be studied. Real two-dimensional Fourier-transform spectroscopy (2DFTS) spectra reveal a complex response at the heavy-hole exciton emission energy that varies with the absorption energy, ranging from dispersive on the diagonal, through absorptive for low-energy interband transitions to dispersive with the opposite sign for interband trans…
This Chapter contains a review of the recent results, both experimental and theoretical, related to optical control of carriers confined in semiconductor quantum dots. The physics of Rabi oscillations of exciton and biexciton occupations, as well as time-domain interference experiments are discussed. Next, the impact of carrier--phonon interaction in a semiconductor structure is described and modern methods of theoretical description of the carrier--phonon kinetics and of the resulting dephasing are presented.
In many physical systems, there are specific electronic states called dark state that are protected from the rapid radiative decay imposed by the system symmetry. Although their long-lived nature indicates their potential for quantum information and spintronic applications, their high stability comes at the expense of optical accessibility. Breaking the symmetry by using magnetic and electric fields has been employed to hybridize dark and bright states thus making them optically active, but high-frequency and on-chip operation remains to be developed. Here we demonstrate the strain-induced coh…
We present a magneto-optical study of the carrier dynamics in compressively strained Ge(1-x)Sn(x) films having Sn compositions up to 10% epitaxially grown on blanket Ge on Si (001) virtual substrates. We leverage the Hanle effect under steady-state excitation to study the spin-dependent optical transitions in presence of an external magnetic field. This allowed us to obtain direct access to the dynamics of the optically-induced carrier population. Our approach singled out that at cryogenic temperatures the effective lifetime of the photogenerated carriers in coherent Ge(1-x)Sn(x) occurs in the…
The interplay between an open quantum system and its environment can lead to both coherent and incoherent behaviour. We explore the extent to which strong coupling to a single bosonic mode can alter the coherence properties of a two-level system in a structured environment. This mode is treated exactly, with the rest of the environment comprising a Markovian bath of bosonic modes. The strength of the coupling between the two-level system and the single mode is varied for a variety of different forms for the bath spectral density in order to assess whether the coherent dynamics of the two-level…
We present transport measurements on high-mobility bilayer graphene fully encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride. We show two terminal quantum Hall effect measurements which exhibit full symmetry broken Landau levels at low magnetic fields. From weak localization measurements, we extract gate-tunable phase coherence times $τ_ϕ$ as well as the inter- and intra-valley scattering times $τ_i$ and $τ_*$. While $τ_ϕ$ is in qualitative agreement with an electron-electron interaction mediated dephasing mechanism, electron spin-flip scattering processes are limiting $τ_ϕ$ at low temperatures. The anal…
The coherent spin dynamics of resident carriers, electrons and holes, in semiconductor quantum structures is studied by periodical optical excitation using short laser pulses and in an external magnetic field. The generation and dephasing of spin polarization in an ensemble of carrier spins, for which the relaxation time of individual spins exceeds the repetition period of the laser pulses, are analyzed theoretically. Spin polarization accumulation is manifested either as resonant spin amplification or as mode-locking of carrier spin coherences. It is shown that both regimes have the same orig…
We theoretically investigate optical injection processes, including one- and two-photon carrier injection and two-color coherent current injection, in twisted bilayer graphene with moderate angles. The electronic states are described by a continuum model, and the spectra of injection coefficients are numerically calculated for different chemical potentials and twist angles, where the transitions between different bands are understood by the electron energy resolved injection coefficients. The comparison with the injection in monolayer graphene shows the significance of the interlayer coupling …
We propose a solid-state implementation of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in two coupled semiconductor quantum dots. Proper combination of two pulsed laser fields allows the coherent carrier transfer between the two nanostructures without suffering significant losses due to environment coupling. By use of a general solution scheme for the carrier states in the double-dot structure, we identify the pertinent dot and laser parameters.
